  • A performance steeped in history: Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73, as played by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under the baton of Kurt Masur, in the St. Nicholas Church, Leipzig, October 9, 2009.
This concert, bearing the theme of '20 Years Since the Peaceful Revolution', commemorates October 9, 1989 - the date when over 70,000 people gathered in Leipzig, the GDR’s second-largest city, to protest for democracy and increased freedom. Kurt Masur was among those calling for non-violence. On that tense evening, the Gewandhaus Orchestra also played Johannes Brahms’ (1833 - 1897) second symphony, under Masur's direction.
On account of its cheerful and lyrical mood, Brahms' second symphony is also known as the 'Pastorale'. Just as Beethoven evoked idyllic, rural scenes in his 'Pastorale', Brahms wrote his Symphony No. 2 with a view of the budding landscapes of Carinthia, where he was staying in 1877. The premiere of the symphony was held in Vienna, in December of that same year, and was a resounding success.
    (00:00) I. Allegro non troppo
    (16:07) II. Adagio non troppo
    (25:24) III. Allegretto grazioso
    (31:19) IV. Allegro con spirito

Oh, I love this man and his performance here! This is certainly among the best versions of Brahms' #2 that I've ever heard. Above all, the phrasing is impeccable. The pace is grand. A total delight! Praise to the performers, too. Thank you all!

An absolutely superb performance! We in the USA were privileged to have Maestro Masur in charge of the New York Philharmonic (1991-2002). He raised the performance standards of that orchestra considerably. But beyond that, he was a truly fine man, one for the ages!

I was lucky enough to have attended the Brahms Cycle including all the Symphonies at Barbican Centre in London while I was residing in London UK in 1990 or 1991 of the concerts by Leipzig Gewanthause mit Dirigent Maestro Kurt Masur UND they were “ Sehr Shöne ! “ Absolute Best of the Brahms even though I have been to almost all the well known concert halls as well as attended those concerts by the world notable orchestras so many times in my life !
I still recall the one of those many concerts that I attended - their ( Leipzig Gewandhaus mit K. Mazur ) as my most favourite performances in my life as classical music freak !
Especially Leipzig is the very special place for Clara Schumann and thus for Johannes Brahms !

PS On the same day back in 1862 dated as 18th of November 1862 written by Johannes Brahms to Clara Schumann “
Where do we - kind of those of us so few in number of existing people who can not find our each ideal location ?”

I'm a little biased here, because Brahms has been my favorite composer for decades. But I think that the slow movement of Symphony #2 is among the most beautiful ever written, and the entire work is a masterpiece. Effortlessly and beautifully played here. Just wonderful to witness music-making at this level.

Thanks for posting this audio-visual record of the late, great Kurt Masur leading the famous Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. It was my privilege some years ago to attend live performances of the four Brahms symphonies with this ensemble and Maestro Masur during one of their North American tours. And I have long owned the Philips recordings of Masur and the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Beethoven, Brahms, and Bruckner. I hope DW has more of their concerts recorded for release on your YT channel. These archived performances are not "old." They are very much alive. Thanks so much!

Einfach wundervoll!

What I really enjoy a lot with Brahms is his use of the wind section. He did the same later in his Symphony No.4. I'm a little biased towards wind instruments as it was the first thing I tried learning as a 9 year old. Sorry to admit I still suck at playing. LOL!

What a wonderful performance of this wonderful symphony! And Brahms never seizes to surprise you with his amazing technique...For example, I have never understood why he gives the upper part to the celli in the second theme of the first movement(mes. 82), with the violas playing a third below. Maybe a professional musician reading this could explain it to the simple amateur that I am!

Great performance by the orchestra, but less so by the camera team. Audiences want to see the MUSICIANS, not the conductor.

Perhaps the film crew was realizing this may be an Immortal tribute to a senior conductor who may have less time to spend with us than the musicians who are united under his baton? Kudos to all who partook in performing, and preserving this Beautiful Treasure for Eternity🙏

A bit too pastoral for my taste. There has to be more than technical brilliance, coordination with precision; it evokes little in me, if I played this from my open window very few outside would stop and listen. But you're programmed to approve and will totally disagree with me, as always...

    • @lsmart
      @lsmart 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree 100%. The Second may be a pastoral symphony, but not in the sense of Beethoven's Sixth, which truly evokes someone walking in the quiet countryside and adoring the gorgeous trees and flowers and the sounds of chirping birds. This one by contrast, is filled with passages that alternately present a melancholic undertone, a sense of yearning and thoughtful pondering, and moments of revelation that cause great drama and exhilarating energy. In summary, it is not a leisurely relaxing pastoral scene, but rather one that transfixes the viewer, puts him in a thoughtful and exploratory mood, and ultimately elevates him into a rapturous and thrilling fantasy. By the time the last note is sounded, one should feel like jumping out of his seat in roaring approval. This performance doesn't nearly do the trick. Listen to the Abbado and Bernstein versions available on TH-cam instead.
