The craziest thing is, everyone in the cast was supposed to read giant book on nihilism and philosophy - Lawrence Fishburne was the only one who didn't read it. There might be more to it, but this was what I remember. His acting is just slightly different than others because he didn't read this massive philosophical thing, and yet he nonetheless made this entire movie next level, and it may have unintentionally worked to this trilogy's advantage.

For an exposition dump, it has a talented enough actor and good enough effects to be engaging, but it isn't good exposition, it's a dump of exposition.
Metropolis (the movie that both The Matrix and Dark City ape in terms of themes and style) by Fritz Lang has a masterclass in exposition using visuals and music cues to create and exposit a world unlike anything else ever seen before on film. Hell, even Dark City does a far superior job at expositing about its world without dumps (until the mini-dump by Kiefer Sutherland at the end).

In Greek mythology Morpheus is the god of sleep and dreams and he would appear to mortals in their dreams and be a messenger of the gods and communicate divine messages to sleeping mortals. So in a way Morpheus is telling Neo he's been living in a "dream" world and is in fact asleep in the real world and everything in this "dream" is not real.

i figured "Matrix Ressurections" was a diversion tactic to distract us from all the talk and discussion people were having surrounding the aggressive emergence of "AI" this decade. You confirmed it, and I am glad I have yet to allow the 4th installment to ruin the nostalgia I get from watching the original every time. Thanks.

What a brilliant and mind boggling question, It’s Morpheus’ monologue that makes this scene so good and especially emphasis the horror of what the world has become and Neo’s reaction sells it.

Having an actor who has a voice that is so beautiful, well spoken and deep as Lawrence's, really helps sell the whole scene. Lawrence has the kind of voice suitable to narrate anything, even a nature documentary, and make it sound beautiful and interesting. His cool appearance, his cold factual delivery of such well written lines is a powerful combo.
Because the lines it gets to deliver are incredible:
"What is real? How do you define real? If you are talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, taste and see then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain."
That was the kind of thing that blew audience minds back in 1999.
The kind of thing that makes you raise a hand and go: "Now wait hang on a sec..... [thinks about this]..... Oh shit >_> ... O_O whoaa.. "
To top that off, the excellent mixed emotions acting of Neo as he listens to everything explained to him, and the incredible visuals of the scene as everything is explained. Like the absolute stark white room they start off in, moving through the TV, the visions of the real world, a human as a battery, etc.
This scene is cinema history. One of the finest moments of movie making.

Fun fact: the original explanation for why the machines grow humans is that the human brain was used essentially like a processor instead, since it could process more information that even the most advanced tech at the time of similar size.
Thats why the matrix existed: if the humans were part of the machine's networks, they needed to keep us from realizing that, so they gave us the illusion that we were living a normal life.
However that was changed because producers and executives thought the average viewer would be either too stupid or too undereducated in basic computer tech to understand the idea.
So the battery explanation was devised instead.
