This released the week I got out of the Marines. I was back on the block looking for something to do with my new found freedom and watched this as an afternoon matinee. When it finished I immediately bought another ticket and watched it again. What a great movie.
The late 90's and early 2000's was an interesting time to see anything even remotely sexy on or near base. Fear, Scream, Wild Things, Cruel Intentions, Varsity Blues, The Matrix...mmm.
Carrie Anne Moss was so freaking awesome at this role. I don't think there is a better portrayal of a feminine action role that is both beautifully woman AND powerful. I love it.
Carrie Anne Moss became the hottest woman on Earth for at least a year after this movie came out, and Trinity shot straight up into the stratosphere of "best female characters in movie history", right up with Princess Leia and Ellen Ripley because of The Matrix. This was a fantastic super hero origin film that crossed over with cyberpunk, kung fu action films, and there was a decent sci-fi story in there too about what it means to be human! She crushed this role, and this opener is one of THE BEST I've ever seen in 40+ years of movie watching. It hooks you right in, it gets you asking all the right questions, and in under five minutes, we love Trinity and can't wait to see her next scene.
It is a masterclass of filmmaking. Even without the bullet time kick (a marvel at the time) - every shot is artwork. The economy of storytelling is top notch - you don't even realize how many truths of the 'Matrix' have been revealed in these first few minutes.

Trinity's pleather suit is right up there with Marilyn Monroe's 'Some Like It Hot' dress, Farah Fawcett's red swimsuit, and Carrie Fisher's 'Slave Leia' outfit. It immediately riveted itself into the brain of every male that saw it.
I think it is good to view this as though you have never seen it to realise what a great start this is. She defeats a room full of armed police using supernatural strength, agility, and their own weapons against them. And then runs scared from the Agents. Its a very clever way of showing h the Agents are increadibly dangerous without actualy showing you (other than the jump between buildings so you know they have powers like hers). She then disapears. Lots of exciting informatin but with no explanation/exposition

Yeah, whenever I, a straight cisgender person, watched this movie, and I felt like I could relate to it, I didn't know back then that the matrix they were trying to escape from was probably the matrix of conforming to gender social norms. In hindsight, it affects my perception of the movie somewhat.

Highly recommended movie. Trinity is my girl
When the Agents pulled up in the car from Men in black, I knew it was gonna be fire

Baddest opening scene EVER! And Trinity so was so HOT❤❤❤❤❤ And of course, the music score by Don Davis was off the hinges"
