  • This review is how I field strip MREs from waaaaay back in the day when I served on Fort Bragg. The main goal was to save space and weight not to mention ditch or trade stuff you didn't like with the other guys/gals doing the same around you. So join Ol' Gundog for a trip down memory lane and the Fayettenam Strippers!

    My only "field" service was in 1971, so it was loooong before MREs. And didn't have to carry stuff, either. So the only items I'd strip out of an MCI or a LRRP were the items I didn't want to eat at all. The "better than gold" trade items were canned peaches and pound cake - and if you had both, you could get ANYthing for them.

      One of our most prized pieces of gear that was part of our Track ancillary gear was a M-1950 multifuel stove. we burned Mo-Gas in it and used it to make coffee and hot coa coa and heat up our C-Rats in the field. ( Really MCI meals )

    We had huge boxes of things either didn't want or couldn't figure out what to do with it. I used to drink alot of coffee so I scrounged creamer and sugar. At least they had bottled water most of the time . You learned how to talk while drinking it in several of the really hot places. In Somalia we had boxed water from Mt. Kilimanjaro streams. It was good tasting water but sometimes it was crunchy or wiggled when you drank it. We always raided the Army for TP. They had the good stuff. I don't know where we got it but ours had splinters in it you could see.

    As we gather and store MREs for the upcoming "Big Pop" ,we also made strong decisions regarding recycle of useful items,and storage of unused piece parts.My service never had MREs,so they are new to us both.A few shared single meals,proved me correct. Each MRE is capable of supporting two adults in survival mode easily,and with much less water needed than freeze dried survival foods.And,a more varied diet as well.

    The old LBE made carrying coffee and drink mixes easier just by having an extra compression bandage pouch added on to your web belt or your ALICE pack. Cold coffee is better than no coffee, I think we'd all agree. Even putting your coffee into an old MRE bag and putting that into a cargo pocket would work.

    I always get rid of the cappuccino/hot chocolate mixes. Too much sugar and junk. Candy goes too. Never liked sweets. Pound cake for sure breakfast! Coffee is a must! FRH for coffee and meal since you have choice between one or the other. Raisins and craisins I save up and eat about 2-3 packages at one time so that I can finally go number 2 after a few days. Learned that in pre-mob training for deployment May 2017. Still in Iraq. I then kept the wheat snack bread and PB&J to make sandwiches. I basically was making meals. PB&J is good for all meals of the day and as a snack. I traded candy for better stuff since kids these days only seem to like candy.

    I'd love to see your take on stripping rations in different packaging, like C-rats, those russian rations in the green bags, or multi-man rations.

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      C-Rats are easy, just take them out of the box and put them in the radio pouch of your pack. Those foil tins are a whole nother animal in safely storing them so they won't bust open. Which is why I suspect its in a box. Now the Russian Mountain ration with the retort pouches that thing could be cut to half the size with a little tape to hold meals together.

    Great video, field stripping is so important for the infantry who have lug all that stuff using their Leather Personnel Carriers. I'm ex Armoured Corps so we would sometimes turn our vehicles into mobile Wal-Marts, further enhanced by the fact the Aussie Army specifically has a 3-4 man 24Hr ration for crews which is near gourmet.

  • @collinsfriend1
    @collinsfriend1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm This is a great idea. Sometimes we have "leftovers" that we want to keep. We have packaged them into ziplocks but I like this idea better. Something we don't use either like the drinks (but until recently we had those awful 1980's rations too.... blech. Also took us a long time to give them another go.) I like the compactness and organization of it. We're not military ourselves, but have used MREs for ages for our woodsy outings, hikes etc. Easy way to carry a lunch and snacks- so many calories you don't need to drag along a bunch of other snacks. The '80's one grew too yuck over time though so we gave them up until recently. SOME other countries seem to provide a nicer food selection and I wish ours would too. I'd vote for better food for our military if it was ever our choice, even if it meant more tax....though I'm sure there's waste at the top that could be better diverted lol.

    • @collinsfriend1
      @collinsfriend1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Question- did it seem to you that for a while..like later 80's they even got worse? We weren't savvy to production and inspection info so we may have bought older ones not realizing..(we used to think they were forever no matter how stored etc) but was there a down period where they got worse before they got better?

It's different if you have to carry it. I know I was an artillery guy too but when we ran out of bullets we suddenly became light infantry and to stress that point we did A LOT of road marches. In fact every Tuesday in lieu of PT we humped for 3-4 hours. Then the quarterly 20k's and annual 30-32 miler. In fact I remember the Sheridan Tank Battalion were always walking everywhere as it seemed their Tanks were broke down most of the time.

      @@gundog4314 Yeah Gundog i was in A Btry 3rd Bn 79th FA which was part of 42nd Brigade. Originally part of V Corps. Wow..... we never had to walk anywhere in the field haha. If our track broke down or threw a track, which it would now and then, we would " Convert ". That means removing the Launch Truss from the bed in the tracked vehicle and using the mobility kit and attach 2 wheels, towbar and 4 jack down pads and then drop a missile on it and tow it with one of our extended bed 5 ton trucks.
      We had normal PT every morning with a 2 mile run. Once a month the entire Battalion would run 5 miles through local forest. haha we never trained to be infantry. You make me feel like such a woosie.

      I have done a few cooking vids and have made Ranger Pudding before. I think it's in my Field Chow vid. MREs were issued differently depending what base and mission you had. For example, at Bragg we were issued 6 MREs for our A bags which were always packed since we were a rapid deployment force. Just grab A bag and ruck and run out the door to Pope. The A Bag held field gear, uniforms, food, water purification, sleeping bag and a bunch of other stuff I don't recall (been 28 years or so) but enough to have us land on the ground in a foreign country without resupply for 3 days.

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of it is time management. I know it sounds weird but I never liked to stop on a road march, forced march, timed march till it was over. It took a couple miles for your feet, shoulders and lower back to go numb from the weight that stopping for a break any longer than 5 to 10 minutes was painful to get moving again. We would stop just long enough for "Feet and Fuel" boots off, socks off and clipped to the back of your pack to air dry (usually by a buddy as you never took your ruck off) inspect, powder, new socks, boots and in the remaining minutes (usually standing) eat everything and start walking again. Water from a canteen is just fine under those conditions.
      For a side note: You never poured MRE drinks into a canteen (we didn't have camel backs) the dyes in the drinks would stain the inside of the canteens to the point you had to buy new ones of fail every inspection afterwards. Makes you wonder if the drinks will permanently stain plastic what does it do to your insides????

    What's wrong with bringing the cocoa with you into the field? That's my favorite part of the MRE!

      Like I said, 1,000 ways to do it and take what you want. The point is reducing the size and weight so you have more room in your ruck.

    The only thing i really don't get is that you'd rather wipe your hands with the fancy towlette than wipe your ass with the tp :P

      You can never clean yourself up with that TP. I used baby wipes so you could clean your body and the brown round.

    You are expected to consume a certain number of calories per day.sounds like you are one of those soldiers that need to be stood at attention and supervised as he drinks his water. I'd guess it's glued inside the box for airdrops it would have to hit hard enough for the cardboard to crush before the bag was affected.either that or they glued the bag to the box before sending it thru the cardboard folding/glue shut machine.
