Your second guess is correct, its basically a computer programmed to do specific inputs at specific times(it plays the entire game without any human input once the TAS is written), allowing for 100% precision on risky jumps/techniques

This result into a program that will read all the registered imputs, so it can lead to a meticulous and perfect gameplay. Even more, TAS can do glitches and things that a human can't do due to the accuracy needed or the fact that it's requiere to press imputs at accurates frames Every single imput (X button pressed to jump, joystick in specific position to go forward, square button pressed to hit, etc.) is registered at accurate frame.
TAS = Tool assisted speedrun (I think) it uses save states so you can make perfect movements etc for best time. NG+ = New Game +, pretty much “challenge mode” where you have all weapons, bolts etc unlocked
