That incident can happen even if you don't slide/ tackle from behind. I know you said there's nothing you can do, but when Neymar or other players who are often fouled talk about diving or falling to protect themselves this is what they are looking to avoid. If Gomez's reaction to getting clipped had been to let himself fall instead of planting a foot and continuing to try to run from an unbalanced positition, I could see this injury not occurring at all.
He had another player in front of him and just collided with him so he didnt even have room to dive. I watched the game live and first thought he was injured from the impact with the player in front of him. Btw, the player's name is GomeS not Gomez.
He meant in the context of pre-match preparations I think, not in game decision making. There’s no kind of conditioning for that area that would’ve prevented that kind of movement from causing the fracture/ tear/ damages

I’d like to suggest Yasser Corona’s (soccer player for Xolos Tijuana) neck injury that lead to his retirement last year 2018. It was such a bad injury, it was noted that his teammates attempted to aid him and subsequently worsened his injury. Fair warning it was a tough injury to watch live on tv. Love your vids man.
It was not his teammates but his position on hitting the ground. The way his head hit the ground was terrifying. One hit from the attacker and the other was his landing. Players only did good by opening his mouth or he would've died out of breath.

I can say you're 100% right with the bone healing be the easy part. It was the recovery from muscle atrophe, and the ligament damage that took almost two years to get back to feeling somewhat normal. Even now, almost five years later, I'm still only at 80% of what I had. It's just a super-traumatic injury, with tons of moving parts.
Also worth considering in his recovery/comeback is the psychological impact... it can greatly impact his future career and playing style even if physically his body is fully recovered... some players are never quite the same after a major injury because mentally they have difficulty getting back “in the game.”

I suffered an almost identical diagnosis from a very different incident in late 2007, in my late 20s. I took a blunt force trauma to the mid-shin from a car/leg impact at 70mph (I was riding a motorcycle and collided with someone else's wreck). The tib and fib were fractured, the ankle dislocated, and the ankle broke. My foot stayed anchored to the motorcycle footpeg, as the impact occurred and pushed the leg back relative to the foot. It was my boot kept things kind of in place enough to keep the foot. The nerves got a bad hit, and the tendons and ligaments were pretty much all torn or displaced from toes to knee. (For reference, it's my leg on the wikipedia page for skin grafting, which shows the exterior skin injuries to the mid-shin). The ankle had to be pinned for 4 months, and I was in a cast and on crutches for almost 8 months. I took almost 6 years to walk unaided more than just a little around the home. I was begging for an amputation around the 3 to 5 year mark (denied). Now I struggle daily with pain and mobility. The movement of my ankle is severely limited, and it's only going to degenerate in future with arthritis as I now move into my 40s. However I was grossly unfit. In Gomes favour, he's an elite athlete. He has access to the best medical trauma care, follow-up care, after-care, and rehab care imaginable. I'd expect his prognosis to be infinitely better than my own was/is.

Made my recently healed Lisfranc fracture hurt seeing the picture! Right up there with the leg fracture of Joe Theismann's leg that ended his career. Hope he gets to return to the game he loves so much.
I fractured my navicular bone in my ankle which ended my freshmen soccer year. It was terrible but this is worse and I pray he’s able to return to the sport.

I think you are all missing the point here. Earlier in the game, Son was tackled hard and did not get a free kick. For some time he was running around like a headless chicken. Clearly the red mist was down. This went on for some time, and he simply couldn't shake it. He was an accident waiting to happen. When Andre had a heavy touch, the ball ran away from him. Son came charging in and Andre had nowhere to go. It was actually the collision with Serge Aurier that did the damage, but only because Andre was trying to avoid Son. Once he saw what had happened, Son's red mist cleared and he burst into tears. He KNEW what he had done. Aurier was making a legitimate tackle, but because of Son's lunge and Andre's avoidance attempt the injury was inevitable. I know Son didn't try to break Andre's leg and twist his foot around to face the wrong way, but that was what he caused. The red card was the right decision, and should not have been rescinded. Fortunately, Andre made a miraculous recovery and was playing in the first XI within three months. He is still at Everton, as an impact player coming off the bench to support our new midfield!
One of the worst leg breaks I ever saw in football was Coventry city player David Bussts against Manchester United in 1996 ...it was .truly horrific, there was even blood on the pitch , it was simply horrible.....
Ankle injuries soo painful....specially in sports...sometimes i get my ankle twisted when playing Badminton..also when you normal walking..still can get ankle injury sometimes ankles are so sensitive ..when you do any kind of activity...
I dont think it was sons intention to break his ankle. Definitely angry and unsportsmanlike but hs intention was to trip him. The resulting collision with aurier (which was a good tackle for a 50-50) and sudden decrease in acceleration combined with the rotated planted ankle and forward momentum is what done it. I fractured my navicular bone in my ankle which ended my freshmen soccer year. It was terrible but this is worse and I pray he’s able to return to the sport.
The S in Gomes is pronounced like "Shh" in Portuguese. Not Z like it's spelled Gomez in Spanish. Great video though!

I think you are all missing the point here. Earlier in the game, Son was tackled hard and did not get a free kick. For some time he was running around like a headless chicken. Clearly the red mist was down. This went on for some time, and he simply couldn't shake it. He was an accident waiting to happen. When Andre had a heavy touch, the ball ran away from him. Son came charging in and Andre had nowhere to go. It was actually the collision with Serge Aurier that did the damage, but only because Andre was trying to avoid Son. Once he saw what had happened, Son's red mist cleared and he burst into tears. He KNEW what he had done. Aurier was making a legitimate tackle, but because of Son's lunge and Andre's avoidance attempt the injury was inevitable. I know Son didn't try to break Andre's leg and twist his foot around to face the wrong way, but that was what he caused. The red card was the right decision, and should not have been rescinded.
Fortunately, Andre made a miraculous recovery and was playing in the first XI within three months. He is still at Everton, as an impact player coming off the bench to support our new midfield!

One of the worst leg breaks I ever saw in football was Coventry city player David Bussts against Manchester United in 1996 ...it was .truly horrific, there was even blood on the pitch , it was simply horrible.....

Ankle injuries soo painful....specially in sports...sometimes i get my ankle twisted when playing Badminton..also when you normal walking..still can get ankle injury sometimes ankles are so sensitive ..when you do any kind of activity...
I dont think it was sons intention to break his ankle.
Definitely angry and unsportsmanlike but hs intention was to trip him.
The resulting collision with aurier (which was a good tackle for a 50-50) and sudden decrease in acceleration combined with the rotated planted ankle and forward momentum is what done it.
