My Ocean City NJ Memories of the Boardwalk 1970's and Before

- On the 14th photo, I have penciled in the section of the original boardwalk north of 4th street which was destroyed in the March storm of 1962. This section is visible most clearly in the 9th photo. It ran in front of the old Delaware and Breakers Hotels. The section of boardwalk just to the south of this remained until it was moved inland in 1980. The boardwalk south of 12th street was also either severely damaged or destroyed, and had to be rebuilt.
The Surf Theater opened just north of 12th & the Boardwalk in 1929 after the great fire, and was originally called the Showboat and presented vaudeville acts. By the early 40's it was taken over by the Strand Theater Company. It was converted to an shopping mall in the early 80's.
Copper Kettle Fudge was located at 11th & the Boardwalk, on the corner just south of the Flanders Hotel. It was established in 1947 and was still there 40 years later. Today this is the site of Fralinger's Salt Water Taffy.
Morrow's Nut House was located between 9th & 10th and the Boardwalk. It was opened in the mid-1930's and closed after the 2004 season. The location is now a Curly Fries.
The entrance to the old Seaside Baths just south of Mac & Mancos's 920 Boardwalk location is now the Islander Shop. The huge bath structure in the rear was torn down and is now a parking lot.
Shriver's at 9th & the Boardwalk is the oldest business on the boardwalk, being established in 1898. I worked for Hank Glaser and his father at Shriver's for a number of years during the mid-80's cooking, pulling and wrapping the salt water taffy. The best part was all the cute girls that sat at tables and boxed the taffy in back of you. Hank was a really cool guy and a pleasure to work for. I remember his dad was pretty old at that time and wasn't supposed to drive after dark. I also worked at Irene's Gift Shop and the Smuggler's Shop in the early 80's.
Simms Restaurant and Take Out located between 8th & 9th Street and the Boardwalk was just south of the Mooryln Theater. It was said to have had the best cinnamon buns in South Jersey. It was established in 1912 and closed in 1980. A video arcade occupied the corner until 1996. when a fast food establishment took over. The space is now occupied by Curly Fries second location; with Haunted Golf next door.
The Village Theater was located at 8th & the Boardwalk and burned down June 12, 1990 after being newly renovated and split into two screens. Gremlins 2 and Disney's Dick Tracy were to be the first features presented. The Frank Theater Company had purchased the Village, Moorlyn and Strand Theaters in early 1989. The Village Theater was originally on the ocean side of the boardwalk, but after the great fire of 1927 the boardwalk was moved 200 feet closer to the ocean, leaving the theater behind. The billboard for the old Village Theater is still in use above the "South Seas Shop".
I took a date to see "Back to the Future" at the Strand Theater in July 1985. I remember it still had just the one huge screen at that time; and was not yet a multiplex.
The last picture is of Zaberer's Restaurant in Wildwood. It was a family tradition to eat there once every year. I always got the Prime Rib and loved the arcade room they had at the back. I would go there and play while the adults talked away, waiting for the food to arrive. Zaberer's was sold in 1988 and was foreclosed on two years later; 35 years after being opened. My other video entitled "Wilkin Homes in Ocean City, NJ (1973 to 1993) includes a trip to Zaberer's.

My Dad just passed away. He made sure we spent 2 weeks in Ocean City every year in August in the 60s. We lived outside Philly (Dad from Pittsburgh).My Mom lived in Ocean City after graduation from Upper Darby H.S. Pa. in 1948. Thanks Pop for the wonderful memories...48th and Asbury Ave,Campbells,Tuckahoe Inn,Chris's Dock and the Flying Pony,biking on the boardwalk and the orange juice place,and so much more....
Lynne Braun -how about the beach when the Copertone and heavy baby oil wafted all around you and the small planes with their engine sounds flew above the beach trailing ads? Ooooo.

@@georgehenderson7783 Watson's was on the S,E. corner of 9th & Ocean Ave. Torn down and replaced with Watson's Regency Conds. (Other corners included the Post Office, Shifting Sands Motel, and Esso station (with indoor parking) since torn down and replaced with a Sunoco station, also torn down, now "apartment style" condos.

I moved away from Jersey and am on the downhill side of life so will probably never visit Ocean City again, but thanks for so many memories, both happy and sad.

I miss going there so much,on my summer vacation I would go visit my MOM MOM AND POP POP,my grandparents and we would always go there,boardwalk,playing in the sand and swimming. I was around 7 and remember swimming out so far that I couldn't see the beach hardly,got stung by jellyfish and felt myself being pulled out to sea.I saw the movie Jaws and never went out that far again,I considered myself lucky going out that far and not gotten eaten up😖
We used to dress up to go to the Boardwalk on a Saturday evening. We'd eat dinner at Simms, ride the Ferris wheel and always take in a game of miniature golf. It was one of the highlights of our vacation at the shore. We'd always watch them make salt water taffy and fudge, and take a box of each home with us. It was the 1950s. By the mid sixties, when I was in high school, many things had changed, but so much I remember is gone, either by fire or simply the changing times. But the memories remain pristine in my mind, even after almost a half century living in the Midwest.
Funky_banana we went every summer, too. It's in my memory forever. I remember Jimmy's Peanuts and watching an animated character stirring fudge. Took home the fudge and salt water taffy. Loved the place and not sure if I should revisit now. It was in the late 50's, maybe early 60's. We always stopped at Atlantic City but it is definitely not the same.
TheQueenSabrin It’s probably best to skip Atlantic City but Ocean City is still very nice. It won’t be the same of course but I just returned from there and the nostalgia level was high.
Simply.Shooketh Go! Visit Ocean City one more time! We went last year and the year before. We loved it again. Its different and the same. I feel as if Ocean City itself has some kind of summer angel that sees all Ocean City’s faults and pains, but sees to it that the little beating heart of that town isn’t sold or minimized, but keeps beating to bless the summers of the world.
Well many things haven’t changed. I’m from the area and grew up in the early 2000s getting dinner , riding the Ferris wheel, watching them make taffy and fudge and enjoying the salt water air. It’s still a lot of fun and there’s still a lot of the same businesses from the 70s
I had been going there since I was born, in 1952. I am convince I was conceived there! I now live out west but dream of good old OC often. Thanks for the memories!

I've been coming to OC, NJ since 1968. No beach tags were required then. There are more restaurants now, less beach erosion. It still retains its small town, family ambiance. Changes, unlike other places (Atlantic City among them) have been minimal. It's essentially the same resort I saw for the first time, age 19.
It is very hard to find older pictures of Ocean City, NJ. That was my world from 1969 thru 1994. It seems so far from me now. I was there 5 days ago and it was a different world. So over-built and soooo many people. I saw 'The Deep' in '77 at that movie theatre on the boardwalk. We were docked at (the original) Blue Water Marina at 34th street. I had a boyhood friend, Greg Ricci and his sister, Alyssa. His mom, Elaine, and pop, Greg Sr, were cool people. I have so many memories from there and my wife tells me I'm obsessed a bit. lol I wish I could find them.
Summer nights in a marina after lots of people were out fishing that day meant hibachis burning on each finger pier and everyone had plenty to eat. It was the best time to be a kid during that time. Swimming in the marina during the sunset was awesome. (obviously,no boats were running at that time).
It's a time lost to me, except for in my head. I wish I could bring visitors with me to see that area during those times.

I saw some photos of Ocean City from the 1900’s I think, on the Bernard Nagy channel. I think he no longer has a channel on yt but can be found on some other platform. Lovely video.
It was packed back then too , no? Look at the pictures. It’s still a lot of fun at ocean city. That’s why families have never left and people keep coming back.
My dad loved this beach. His grandma was a tiny Armenian lady who worked on Asbury Ave at Staintons. She and my dad’s grandpa (his last name was Bates)had a home on 5th street. It’s one of the oldest homes in OC. My dad worked on the boardwalk a few summers in the 60’s. He loved it there so much until the day he passed away 2006. I have many wonderful memories there as a kid. I don’t really visit much anymore because it’s not the same without my dad! Just feels different to me now. But I hold all of the memories in my heart. Such special times... 💙
The title “My Ocean City” started me thinking that I could possibly end up in tears if I watched your video... But I had to watch. Then the music you chose and loved scenes of exactly what I remember had me crying like a lost toddler way before I got to Zaberers! I’m still sniffling! So-in a few minutes my husband will be coming home to no dinner. My plan-no matter how hungry he is, I’ll show him your video, and-I know him-we will both be sobbing together here where we are-40 years away from Ocean City summers. Even our old house on 13th and Central is bulldozed now. In 1968 and 1969, I worked (as a 13 yr old, illegally) at Shrivers for Frank and Hank Glazier packing SWT and wrapping pound boxes. Hank used to sing to us girls on the assembly belt “if I only had a brain” when someone missed a salt water taffy flavor. He looked mostly at me the while he sang this! Thank you Jonathan for your love of that certain place in the world.
Oh the memories I had. Been going to Ocean City for decades. I remember vividly walking that boardwalk from Gillians wonderland pier to the Flanders Hotel. I would just stand on the boardwalk and stare at the Flanders. Every summer my parents would rent a house on Brighton Place. I've been vacationing every year for the last four years at the Flanders because I just love it. Beauty, vintage and convenience, all wrapped up in one.

Just came across this. Very nice. I grew up exactly where you show in your video and remember it well. I watched them build Wonderland. I was there - very young- in the aftermath of the '62 storm. The "old stores" that you show on your map were my family and extended family lived and worked. Great memories. We spent some summers in the wonderful apartments on top of the stores, worked at Larzelere's and also across from Music Pier in the 60's and early 70's. Those were some crazy summers. I vividly remember the Johnson Ice Cream fire and was there before the fire trucks arrived. We lived at the base of the boardwalk ramp at the time. Jimmy Johnson lost his life and the other young man jumped from the window onto the beach. Thank you for putting this all together.
Mike Nicholas Sr. I used to love the idea of living above the stores. As a teen, I had a friend, Susan, who took me up to her apartment above Copper Kettle! It was wondrous!

I don’t know whether to smile or cry. We spent my first 13 summers in OC, at Ocean Court. So many memories, so many things gone. That Gardens Plaza is a poor replacement for what used to be there. Thank you so much!

DOUG SCHAFFER did you find photos of Watson’s? I couldn’t find one photo postcard in 2018 on eBay but in case you haven’t checked this out lately, today I found almost a dozen good post cards (different periods) of Watson’s on eBay.

Thank you for sharing this. I stumbled over it looking for some old info about OCNJ. My grandparents bought a condo up there back when I was in the single digits, and my father used to drag the family up there every summer for 2 weeks. I have very foggy idealized memories of the old boardwalk, back before my folks split. So for me, it was the late 70s and early 80s when I walked the boardwalk. It's amazing to me how many memories this video brought up. I think the only thing I didn't see was the change when Simms stopped being a restaurant and became an arcade (I think in the early 80s? Around the time Pac-man fever hit... I think). Thank you for that trip down memory lane.
Thank you for the video. Liked the pic of Moorlyn theater with "The Omen" showtimes. Been going there since the 1970's as a kid and now I go there with my kids. Great music. Gives you that sadness of time gone by. Wish i could relive those years again.
Thank you so much for posting this....it brings back a lot of memories. My grandparents used to have a home on St Charles Place. I got to go down there a few times every summer from 1978 until they sold it in 1994. I still try to make a yearly trip to the area, but not as much as I used to. I, too, can remember the waves splashing up through the boardwalk and being able to set up your beach chairs underneath during the day when the tide was out so you could sit in the shade. I also noticed the beach area by the Longport Bridge in the gardens section looks totally different now. It's hard to think its the same place. I remember there used to be a little playground there next to the bridge I would ride my bike to. I'm glad the whole town is still family friendly. I hope it can stay that way.

Thanks for the wonderful video.........it brought back so many good memories for me of the summers I worked in OC in the early-60s. I was a lifeguard at one of the motel pools and lived at Mrs. Dunwoodies’ rooming house on the corner of 12th & Central for four years in a row........May thru September. I returned for a visit in 2009 and it seemed as I always remembered........even The Chatterbox restaurant. After all these years, it’s my favorite beach town in the U.S.

There is a very rare 8 track tape made by the Old Salt Gift Shop that captures the sounds of the beach in Ocean City in 1977. If anyone has a copy, please make the sound available on TH-cam so that it is not lost forever ❤️❤️❤️
I remember that tape playing and the big deep diving suit when I would go into that shop as a kid. Seems like there was a parrot and big whale bone. But not really positive.
Grew up in Lower Merion, PA ( Merion Station ) Drafted in 72 at 18 yrs. My summers in the 60's were spent mostly on the boardwalk in OC , NJ, sometimes at Cape May , then my parents enjoyed Avalon. Spent many a night sleeping under the boardwalk and hanging out around Shrivers. The best place to meet girls was on the boardwalk and I assure you what great memories. Never liked the beach much. I either went swimming or walked the boardwalk. So many nice people, so many pretty girls! Gosh, I miss those days .

+Jonathan Wilkin - I took the 2 pictures of Seaside Baths when I worked for Helen Schilling. And the color picture of the Village I took around 1982. I was a projectionist for the theaters in the 70's and 80's. I might have run the show when you went to see Back to the Future at the Strand. I left when the Frank's bought the theaters and was asked to testify at the Historical Commission meetings surrounding that straw man purchase.
The theaters had a long and interesting history, so I created the Moorlyn.com website with my picture collection. The site doesn't appear correctly now. I need to re-publish it with a modern publishing tool.

I live in a town right next to ocean city. I like tried finding historic pictures of OC, but couldn’t find that much. I just was there yesterday, and here is some info for tourists: The summer of 2019 will have a new Ben and Jerry’s, Mack and Manco is now manco and manco, and the strand theatre has closed. A Manco and manco sits there right now. Yes, the music pier is still there. If anyone remembers the sindia shipwreck, it is no longer there because they built dunes over it. I barely go there for some reason, but ocean city is very beautiful. THANK YOU, for putting up this video.
The tiller from the Sindia now sits outside the new library building. I heard the beach replenishment folks broke it off while working.

I went to Pleasantville HS......Ocean City HS our sports arch-rivals.Ocean City was and still is a nice town. !!!!!!
I've been vacationing in Ocean City every year since 1981 and this video brought back a lot of memories. I was on the beach at 34th Street the day of the Village Theater fire. It looked like someone had bombed the boardwalk.

Mack & Manco pizza was terrific. They used hoses to put on the tomato sauce base.
pmichael73 now it’s called manco manco. Definitely doesn’t taste the same to me (not because of name change) just every year it doesn’t feel as good. Still good though

Wow. I've been going to this boardwalk since I was very little, in the early 2000's. I think it's pretty neat to see what it looked like long ago!
Also, my Dad always talked about how the water went under the boardwalk. Wish I could have seen that for myself!
As a kid I had many, many nightmares of being trapped on the boardwalk, surrounded by water washing all around it. I guess as a kid seeing that water rush under the boardwalk and splash up through the boards got into my brain. You could walk down the stairs toward the beach and the bottoms would be hit with 2 or 3 foot high rushing waves. The water always used to wash under the boardwalk and up into that open sandy area where the volleyball nets are just north of Wonderland. Just north of that for a year or two there was a pirate miniature golf course that just stuck out on the Wonderland side of the boardwalk between Wonderland and the Gardens Plaza high-rise. It sat on the platform that was left after they cleared those 3 or 4 old stores away to make way for relocating the boardwalk farther away from the water.

I remember staying at the Breakers and eating at Simm's .Remember Chris' seafood restaurant and the Flying Saucer? Great video-brought back a lot of memories.

@@Frenite I’m going back to around the early 1980’s to late 80’s was my prime time 😎 I lived in Somers Point. I just wasn’t happy if I couldn’t be in OC all day surfing then all nite up at the boardwalk doing what boys do ‼️🤟🏼 so many great memories that are etched in forever

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I lived there in the 80’s. My girlfriend prob worked with u at shrivers. She was one of the cute girls packaging up the treats. Cutting school to go to Jillian’s. Goofy golf an of coarse playland (I worked there for a summer) getting pizza at mac n mancos. Yes they used a hose to sauce your pizza. Ha. Haven’t been back since 2000. Thanks again! Great video

My Uncle and Aunt had a house right next to the Port O Call hotel. 3 houses away from the boardwalk. Back in the 1970"s...I would walk up the ramp onto the boardwalk and look at the wreck of the Sindia...miss those days! Good times back in 70's and 80's...

Oh look, this godly divine place.
Love seeing this, including the old buildings no longer there. Our family stayed at The Miramar at 17th and Boardwalk, for about 14 years straight, usually one week, but then two, and finally one glorious summer for 3 weeks. :-) I'm trying to find out if anyone has any photos or movies including the food stand that stood between the Miramar and the boardwalk named 'Johnny Butler's'. They sold dogs, burgers, penny candy, etc. I don't remember seeing it in any of our old movies or pictures. Thanks again for your videos.

The Varsity Inn restaurant is still there at 8th Street, but I'm sorry, I don't recall if it was ever on the boardwalk. 😊
Yes, we ate breakfast at the Varsity on 8th Street many times. My mom’s tennis friend Dot Padecky’s son was the manager. It was never on the boardwalk.
Yes, I remember. You are referring to "Varsity Beach" hamburger stand on the boardwalk near 2nd St. The building (with the grill) was on the right and outdoor wooden booths were on the left, (Tables had a hole in the middle for beach umbrellas.) Building and booths were painted white with dark blue trim. Later, it was called "North End Grill" and it was torn down about 2000.

My parents came here before I was born and they brought me every summer afterwards. We stayed at the Ebbtide Apts. on Atlantic Ave. Ext. (now Little Atlantic Ave.) The Impala bought them eventually and now I guess they are the Ebbtide Suites. I remember so much detail of the old Ebbtide. It was owned by an older German couple, John and Hilda Taylor. Would love to see old pictures of that area (beach block of 10th St.) I remember walking to Watson's to pick up our dinners at the take-out. Ocean Colony wasn't there yet and I just cut through some sandy lots to get there. There was a used book store at the top of the north ramp to the boardwalk on 10th. Slanting wooden floors and the most amazing smell. Castaway Cove was simply Playland and the older gentleman who ran the merry-go-round would often refuse to take my ticket, giving me a free ride. That was a big deal because I was limited to 3 rides a night and that gave me an extra one. I could go on and on. Haven't been there since 2000. I miss the old OC. Thanks for this great video.

I remember years ago when they had DANCESAT 6TH BOARDWALK,,FLANDERS HOTEL WAS OPEN TO PUBLICWHICH WAS GREAT,,SURFING AT 14ST GREAT WAVES.

It was the tune played by Captain Picard in the episode of Star Trek the Next Generation entitled "The Inner Light". It was an excerpt from "Scottish Fantasy", originally composed by Max Bruch and re-composed by Jay Chattaway.
Sadly, we owned the Tiki at 4th and the Boardwalk before they tore down the boardwalk and moved it back. Afterwards they figures out how to rebuild the beaches back up.
I remember after they tore down the shops, one year before they moved the boardwalk back someone put up a miniature golf course on the platform. I think it was only there a year or two.
The Tiki was on the South corner of 4th & Bdwlk. and The Sun Spot was on the North corner.I remember when The Tiki was owned by Franny, his sister Lucy (who had "Lucy's Boutique" next door, later it was their antique shop) a second sister (I don't remember her name) and their Uncle Bud. Inside of The Tiki, painted on the wall behind the counter, was a sailing ship outlined with little twinkle lights. @@sunshineimperials1600 That wouldn't be any fun New Imperials. NYC is trash already. We got people fist fighting in broad daylight. One dude knocked another guy out. Maryland needs to up their image. I know there's alcohol sales on the boardwalk but that ain't half the problem. All them hooligan kids showing up looking for trouble is the problem. Even Ocean City NJ had the same problem recently. It's the city folk showing up looking to start trouble, especially from Philly and NYC.
A long time friend worked three summers at Bob's in the fifties. The last Summer, just after Labor Day, he was fired for putting too much turkey on a club sandwich. True story,

This is before they started to dredge out from shore with barges and pipe the sand onto the beaches to replenish them.
That's the way it was at High Tide before they started pumping sand to build up the beach.
Does anyone have any pictures or any memories of 34th street in Ocean City when the original Blue Water Marina was there before it got dismantled in/around 1983? If so, please contact me. I am desperate to find pictures of that area. I spend many years in that marina with a childhood friend, Greg and his family, Greg Sr, Elaine, Alyssa and it seems like a piece of history that I can't get any tangible images of.

Yes, in the 70's the waves used to splash up from under the boards, the waves were so strong underneath. As a kid, I used to have nightmares about being stranded on a stretch of boardwalk surrounded by water and no way to escape.The waves used to lap up around the bottom of the staircases going down the beach side. It was more fun as a kid because you could easily walk under the boardwalk or the Music Pier and explore, or just find shade from the sun. I remember the waves rolling up into the area of the volley ball nets just north of Wonderland. And also rolling up under the gift/snack shop that used to be at the very north end of the boardwalk, at North Street, where there is a condo now.

I used to stay in the Fox Goff Apts (gone now) right behind Wonderland in the 80s and I remember watching kids surf right under the boardwalk in front of those volley ball nets. It was so cool back then. There was something so neat about walking on the boards at night when it was high tide and hearing the waves crashing right under your feet. I still love going to Ocean City, but it's definitely not the same.
