The Jersey Shore was my family's traditional vacation spot for many years, and we spent a week in Wildwood for 18 of them, in the very motel shown in this video. We LOVED The Ivanhoe, and it breaks my heart to even THINK that it's going to be demolished. For me, it was like a home away from home for a week every Summer, and I made so many memories while staying there with my mom and dad, who both passed away in 2021. The owners were always kind, friendly people who truly looked forward to seeing us every Summer, and the feeling was mutual. I'll always have fond memories of The Ivanhoe. I don't see why they want to demolish all of these great, unique motels just to put up a bunch of condo that basically all look the same. They were one of the things that made Wildwood stand out. Condos, you can rent anywhere, but those old hotels were a slice of Americana, which, sadly, is now nearly non - existent. What's next - tearing down the Victorian hotels in Cape May? I'll take nostalgia over "progress" every time. Thanks for the memories, Ivanhoe.
The condo developers don’t care about history and nostalgia. Neither do the motel owners selling out. It’s all about the bucks and tax revenue for the city governments. Homes and condos offer a bigger return on investment and more tax revenues due to the high cost of ownership. There is no going back once these motels are gone. Nobody is going to want to take a risk by building new doo wop motels. And today’s vacationers want modern accommodations, not dated moldy 50’s to 70’s motel rooms.
@@robkrasinski6217 Well, you have your opinion, and I have mine. Neither of us can speak for everyone, but as far as I''M concerned, a society that cares about nothing but money is a pretty soulless one. Money can't buy memories, and I never had a bad stay at the Ivanhoe. It was always well - maintained, very clean. "New" doesn't necessarily mean much - it's how well - maintained a building is, and if it's still structurally - sound that matters, not it's age. Society is obsessed with the idea that everything has to be new to be good, but that doesn't happen to be my opinion. And, there's something to be said for the unique nature of those mid - century hotels, as opposed to condos which, to me, all look pretty much the same. No character, no charm. You can't buy those qualities, either.
Unfortunately in our capitalist society it’s survival of the fittest and whoever makes the most money wins. It’s greed. There is nothing structurally wrong with most of the motels, but some developers want to build new construction and that requires razing the motels. There were some motel condo conversions, but it seems the Ivanhoe might be going the other route where the building is razed and the rubble trucked to the landfill, and new homes or condos built on the land, erasing any evidence that a motel once stood there. It’s pretty sad. Hopefully the sign and a few other things are saved. You can expect the yellow CAT bulldozers and excavators to arrive at the Ivanhoe soon. There is no protection of anything in the Wildwoods, no historic landmark status on anything. Developers can swoop in and buy up anything and demolish it for new construction. The Wildwood of my childhood is mostly gone. And all these family run businesses, if owners decide to retire then it’s possible that the business could be sold to people who won’t continue it, but will change the zoning from commercial to residential.
As a visitor I'm concerned that the middle class and working poor will be squeezed out of a Jersey Shore vacation. I fully understand that it's not up to property owners to subsidize my vacation. I don't have a solution, just an observation.
Joey - I’m a fan of the work you do to keep all the Wildwoods in people’s minds whether as memories or a place to play. For the first time I heard sadness in your voice and it really made me feel melancholy. I’ve long left the east coast but North Wildwood was my childhood summer escape thanks to my parents. We rented from homeowners but also booked into the Jade East, Chateau Bleu and Aloha. All are still standing and seem to be well but it’s sad that middle-class escape to the shore is closing up. I guess times change and when you don’t have direct control on property you are at the mercy of the market - doesn’t make it easier. I live in a resort town on the west coast now and have been learning about the economies of it. Your tone really made it clear to me that this change for North Wildwood will really mark the end of an era. I love my memories and am very grateful to have them. Keep pushing the good stuff - we appreciate it!
It’s not just greed, there are enormous overhead costs for the short season at the Jersey shore. I’d be so sad to see it go, but I understand the costs with operating this type of business too.
I miss the motels! It was a way for a family to afford to spend a vacation in Wildwood. I remember my parents, my sister and myself eating breakfast in the motel, making lunches for the beach, then going out for dinner. But there were times we would eat takeout in the motel (Mack’s pizza) then go early to the boardwalk. We would have the pool to swim in waiting for the shower to be free. We were within walking distance to the beach! Where can a family of 4 afford to go today?? 😢
I wholeheartedly agree with you.. I miss all the old motels especially Breakers... dad would take us to Wildwood every summer for a week, and when I finally returned in 2019, I saw that a lot that i remembered, and so much that was new... thank God for memories...
@@denisejackson8485 And, our "big meal of the week", as my dad used to say, at the Hot Spot! Beautiful ocean view! Also, pizza and meatball subs from Three Brothers From Italy!
Could see the hand writing on the wall with Wildwood condo crase starting in the 1980's. We used stay at the Beach Court Motel on 20th St. Owner told me that he put it up for sale for way overprice of over a millon dollars and told me some fool will buy it. A year later somebody purchased it. Even though it was in great shape, well maintained and first motel off the boardwalk new owner tore it down and built condo's. Same thing occured at the great Hitching Post restaurant a few blocks from there. Wildwood politicians should keep the Doo Wop theme and place a ten year moritorium on any condos. Just drive to Cale May and observe how they maintened well over a hundred old great looking Victorian style houses.
Appreciate all your hard work that goes into your videos. Thanks for updating us about the motels. So sad. During my childhood in the fifties and sixties, my parents, sister and I would stay in a duplex apartment for $80 a week every August. Not many hotels/motels were built back then. It was nicer Too congested today. Now, I accompany my adult daughter and grandchildren. We were only able to afford 5 days to stay at a hotel. I hope they don't tear down more. Unbelievable how prices have increased over the last 74 years of my life. No end in sight Blessings to you and your lovely wife. ❤❤❤❤
The constant price increases is one of the reasons people have started going to other places to vacation. Some resorts in other states can provide rooms and other services lower than places at the Jersey shore. People today also prefer going to a variety of different places to vacation while our parents almost always chose the Jersey shore,in our case Wildwood because their friends and coworkers also vacationed there.
Yes, maybe Rehoboth Beach, DE or even Ocean City, MD could be cheaper than NJ. And even Walt Disney World but their admission prices are always going up. It’s everywhere with amusement park price increases. They have to do it to stay in business, make a profit and build new rides and coasters. Morey’s Piers are so expensive now. Morey’s has the only wood track coaster on the eastern shore now besides the Swamp Fox in Myrtle Beach and the Cyclone in Coney Island, NY. Great White is getting new trains next year. We might be returning to Wildwood next year for the first time since early July 2011 and June 1998 before that, and June 1996, Aug 1995 and Aug 1982 and Aug 1983. We lost our mom June 14, 2022 in the hospital because of respiratory failure, and our father March 8, 1986 to a car hitting him while walking at night 2 miles from our house in eastern PA. A man lived with us since early 1994 and since our mom’s passing, he drives us everywhere because my brother and I don’t drive. We started going to an orthodox Presbyterian church near us that meets in a brick building with another business in it since around 2000, and they are affiliated with the Boardwalk Chapel and a pastor from there Chris Byrd came to our church a few times. The man who lives with us might want to go down to the chapel next year and even volunteer.
I MISS ALL THE MOTELS IN NORTH WILDWOOD! I MISS THE OLD WILDWOOD! THE THUNDERBIRD restaurant and motel IS WHERE I GREW UP AT SINCE I WAS A BABY,. The best breakfast, and they had the bar at the pool where our parents would be at while we were in the beautiful big pool. I miss those days. NOW IM A LOCAL IN CAPE MAY.
We always stayed at the panoramic til it sold. We stayed at the ivanhoe this year. I'm so disappointed. We have been staying on that street for over 30 years since I was little
Wildwood, NJ. Was my family vacation destination in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s,. My grandparents on my father's side owned the Spicer house on Spicer Avenue, in north Wildwood. My Grandparents owned it till 1981 or 82. I can't remember what year. My grandfather passed away in 1985. The hotel was sold and operated for a few more years. It was torn down to build a condominium. It was heart breaking. I missed going to Wildwood after that. I only have the memories. Wildwood will never be the same as it once was. It makes me sad to see it now. God bless.
Here's the thing, condominium development results in full-time residents, and full-time residents don't spend the same amount on tourist attractions as a weekender. The Boardwalk is going to suffer if the only customers are residents, and we have just watched this with the fall of Gillian's Wonderland in OCNJ. Also, New Jersey apparently has tough laws for hotels/motels and they type of insurance that the owners need to carry, making the motels/hotels that we know and love more difficult to operate.
Thank you Joe. I really appreciate your videos. It's so sad all these places are being torn down. I know all about progress but enough is enough. I live in North Jersey. I am now retired and wanted to move to the Wildwoods. I've been looking for 4 yrs.now and like you said the prices are ridiculous. Also I'd like to mention I Belong to American legion, Elks, etc. They have their conventions and parades. Our places we've stayed in for over 30 yrs.are gone. Our legion has had to change 3 times due to teardowns & the Elks 2 times. Doesn't the Wildwoods want to keep with traditions? The conventions bring in alot of money. If it keeps going this way, there will be no places to stay. So sad, just saying. Blessings 🙏 🇺🇸
My favorite motel is the Matador it's family oriented. It has a beautiful pool it overlooks The ocean has a playground and the people that own it are fantastic.
Started going to Wildwood in the 60's when I was a kid. The Dorsey on Montgomery ave, The 70's-2000's were at the Lampost, Buccaneer, and of course the Ivanhoe. Sad to see all these great hotels disappear. Best family vacation ever, still have all the memories. Great job Joey as always!
I wish they would or could do something to keep cost down and make it "working man" friendly! I have spent my life growing up in the Wildwoods going there for my family's vacations as a kid and now an adult. Im a career Firefighter and love to spend summer in the Wildwoods but I'm just a normal working man, not a rich person. I WANT MY WILDWOODS BACK !!!! PLEASE !!!!
Same here with Stone Harbor. From 1964-2001 ,I grew spending a month to 6 weeks there. Now, it's becoming challenging to afford to rent for a week. Our week rental is more expensive than we paid for 6 weeks in 2001.
It's the start of being more upscale, like Ocean City is starting to become. Motels are the history of Wildwood. Hopefully people will realize this and Not let this trend to continue, if it takes effect in The city of Wildwood, the END Is NEAR FOR ALL HOTEL/ MOTELS IN WILDWOOD ⛱️. KEEP THE HISTORY ALIVE...M
I cant tell you how heartbroken i am to hear this. My son and i came and stayed here every summer. I have so many memories of him growing up and enjoying swimming in the pool and going to the beach and boardwalk. Wow i am really depressed over this.
Love your Channel Joey !! It's very sad we have been taking our family vacations for years down in Wild Wood and we love being there but we just can't afford it anymore . Thanks for memories Wild Wood ...
Are you sure this is accurate? To me, this actually sounds like an effort by the city in some way to instead PRESERVE hotel/motels since, with the shift from motel rooms to condos, transient use is diminishing. In other words, what they DON'T want, is people living in their "newly-converted condos" year round. Thereby preserving available hotel space. (@Joey, see typo @ 5:54 - 'permanent', not 'permitted').
Wow. My wife and I stayed at the Ivanhoe in the late 70's and most of the 80's. Tony and Margeurite, the owners at the time, became friends. Sorry to hear that it may be torn down.
I love 21st St. I love Horizon Motor Inn and have been a patron there for many many years. The last to times I was in Wildwood I stayed at Ivanhoe and that was because of availability. It was a nice place and I'm sad to see another has come and gone. My family loves Wildwood but it is getting cheaper to stay in the Philippines for a month and see family rather than go to Wildwood for a week. Morey's is a great place but I think the condo condotels are going to price everyone the loves Wildwood for the real reasons out. Please continue to support the family friendly motels so they stay around
Spent many summers as a kid going to the Carousel hotel .. have great memories with my family and friends going to the haunted castle, playing Photon, and eating roast beef sandwiches from Snow Whites .. we also went to the Bal Harbor and absolutely loved the pool and arcade .. miss those days ! About 5 years ago , took a ride down and couldn’t believe how much change there was .. at the end of the day it’s always about money and politics but it was still sad to see .. Thanks for the great memories Wildwood !
I remember staying at the Buccaneer in the 80s every summer as a kid in the 80s. Even for senior week. Those were the days. Class of 86. Many of our friends stayed at other motels too.
Greed has always been a part of the US economy but I feel it has gotten alot worse in recent years. Wildwood Crest holds a sentimental place in my heart.. but its not what I remember... And for a middle class family, the cost to go on a vacation at the jersey shore has gotten out of hand.... too much of a squeeze
For years I stayed at many motels, Ivanhoe was one of them and for many years across the street was San Souci which is gone condo now. Always had many motels to stay and no parking issues. Can’t afford condo. For a few years ago I have been staying at The Florentine Family Motel, family own, I pray if I get to come down again they will be there! I cherish my memories of the past 60 years of going on family vacations to north wildwood. So many changes!😢
I did their Hvac service for a decade that place is tired the original owners didnt take care of it like they used to age catches up to everyone and the buildings sad i enjoyed going there in the summer fix the Hvac
Back in 1967 while in high school we would take a bus from center city Phila to Wildwood ( $5 round trip ) then would rent a room on Glenwood Avenue for $10 for the weekend. So for only $25 we had great weekends that summer. Mack's pizza was only 25¢ a slice.
It's all about revenue, a motel will pay an amount for the whole building whereas individual condos or houses will each pay, so a100 unit condo building each unit will pay property tax, plus the buildings owner will pay property tax on the building.
Hey Joey I was down there on labor day week and was shocked to see a lot was closed down!!! Guess it really is a different world only during summer. Do agree that everything is getting expensive but at the same time wildwood is losing its magic to greed.
@@OdetteOliveira-cb8fq you hit the nail on the head …. In the long run Wildwood will lose all that tourist revenue and the cost will be placed on the homeowners with higher taxes ! I’m sure it will happen in time but I refuse to pay for a stay in wildwood
As the times change so does the market for hotel and motel services. Unfortunately due to the relatively short summer season for Wildwood tourist accommodations it makes it too hard to make a reasonable profit. So especially when you are talking About buildings over 50 yeas old or more it makes more sense to sell out and build something more profitable. Hopefully a few of the older properties will survive but most people today want something more modern and larger than the old style motels.
Well, with all of the history being torn down or converted into condos, I guess this is where us older folks get shoved under the rug and the younger ones get catered to. I walked the boardwalk for the first time in years and was absolutely appalled. There were signs and announcements all over about no smoking, yet I saw head shops all over and constantly smelled marijuana smoke. It is no longer family friendly and will probably wind up being like Seaside Heights. What a shame and what a disgrace. The Wildwood I knew and loved is just a distant memory.
Stopping halfway through to say thank God for the Ivanhoe.. we were at the Ivanhoe when the Thunderbird burnt down. You have to have hotels and motels not just condos.....ugggggh freaking Wildwood!
SAD TO HEAR SUCH BAD NEWS. WE STAYED AT THE IVANHOE THREE YEARS IN A ROW. MISS MARGARITTE WAS THE BEST OWNER. ALWAYS FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. IF YOU HAD A PROBLEM, SHE WAS RIGHT THERE TO HELP YOU. A NICE COMFORTABLE PLACE AND RIGHT BY THE BOARDWALK. I ALSO MUST MENTION THE CLEANING STAFF. I CAN'T RECALL THEIR NAMES, BUT THEY WERE TWO OF THE NICEST LADIES. WE WOULD GO TO BREAKFAST AND WHEN WE CAME BACK THE ROOM WAS ALWAYS CLEAN. THERE WAS ALSO A MAINTENANCE MAN AND THE OWNERS' SON, WHO ALSO WORKED THERE IN THE SUMMER. THEY WERE ALSO VERY NICE AND HELPFUL. WE'LL ALWAYS HAVE OUR GREAT MEMORIES AND PHOTOS TO LOOK BACK ON. THANK YOU IVANHOE!
I’m so saddened by all the changes to wildwood 😢 It was always the vacation my family looked forward to at the end of summer (for over 20 years) I wish I could have my grandchildren experience it the same way their parents did !
What I am misunderstanding about the Ivanhoe not being able to be used for condotel use? If its because of not having enough parking to provide for two spaces per unit, they could always combine units, resulting in larger but less overall units, and therefore having enough parking leftover for more than one vehicle per unit. Plus, that would allow for the units to be viewed as more desirable to some that want something larger, both to live in whenever they wish, and units put in the rental pool when someone books a room at the motel.
@@WildwoodVideoArchive That sounds like something that needs to be changed in their laws...the units should be able to be used by the individual owners whenever they want to, whenever that unit is not in the rental pool. They shouldn't have to abide by a restriction for not being able to use the unit for more than a month if they are that unit's owner. Without doing that, more of this problem will occur, and its not good for motels/preservation and/or new development in the style.
@@WildwoodVideoArchive See, I disagree: I think this video imparts that the city is somehow 'against' motels. I don't think that's the case in the sense of wanting them gone but rather the intent is to take steps to ensure these establishments serve their original purpose-transient accommodations-rather than morphing into permanent or "quasi-residential" condos. I think what's going on here is that the city wants new developments to operate as cohesive, business-run entities. This requirement safeguards the availability of transient lodging for tourists, which is a critical component of the city's economy. Wildwood doesn't seek to be "A City for All Seasons" (Sea Isle motto). And although the wisdom of that might be debatable (especially for a city the size of Wildwood), this approach reflects an effort to maintain the character of North Wildwood as a seasonal tourist destination, ensuring sufficient accommodations for visitors rather than allowing the area to shift toward more permanent residency. The restriction on permanent use of these properties as residences underlines the intent to prioritize transient, visitor-focused infrastructure over residential developments. The phrasing of the ordinance, which prohibits motels as permitted uses, sounds "anti-motel". However, the true focus seems to be on preventing their misuse rather than eradicating them entirely.
Sad but true. The hotel/motel model is about to go by the wayside faster than we would all like. My wife and I love wildwood. Our thoughts and prayers go to those who are still hanging on to those old traditions and values.
It's sad. Housing for summer help is needed so badly. Why couldn't they do that with the property? 35 rooms even if they did half seasonal and half weekly / daily ?
That's really sad to hear about the ivanhoe, from what I remember the people that own Panaromic own the ivanhoe also cause if you want to book one spot at either motel you could cause it was the same price, hope they don't do that though
Yes it has gotten very expensive to stay down in Wildwood. In fact last summer we stayed at a Hampton inn outside of AC and drove the half hour to Wildwood. It was much cheaper than staying in town. $200 a night compared to $300-$500 a night. Plus free breakfast. When we do stay in Wildwood, we only do it on the off season.
I am part of the Special Olympic Basketball team that goes to Wildwood yearly for the tournament. I would like to know what motels/ hotels will open and what will close. Most of the team will be Staying close to the convention center.
Fully understand the dollars driving this but at some point, and it's already happening, the area will be for rich folk only. That's not the way the Wildwoods were built.
KEEP IT UP…KEEP DRIVING PEOPLE SOUTH/CAROLINAS ITS ALOT CHEAPER AND BIGGER HOTELS TO STAY DOWN THERE THAN WILDWOOD GREED NEVER WINS…WITH THAT BEING SAID SEE YOU GUYS IN JUNE-July-Aug Love WILDWOOD… conversely now in the other hand, your average person can’t afford it and that’s not right
Things change. It's sad to see the ol' school Wildwood going away but you can't stand in front of progress. We stopped coming to Wildwood because of the costs and having a dog drives up the stay cost, as so little places one can stay with a dog. We also donated to the musuem everything I could find in my childhood family home that had to do with Wildwood.
My parents liked to go to the Athens II in North Wildwood. It was at the north end, so it was close to the beach, and it was about six blocks from the start of the boardwalk.
You mentioned the golf carts. This is something that needs to be immediately made illegal statewide. You shouldn't be using these on roads or sidewalks.
OMG, that looks just like the one my family stayed at back in the 70s. 3-4 blocks from beach? Hobbled together mini golf tucked back in the back corner?
This is due to the decay of the nighttime boardwalk crowd. It is much more difficult for a hotel to refuse service than a private landlord. Less hotels mean less undesirables causing problems while most of us are trying to enjoy a family vacation.
I’m a single person and am a senior and have physical problems When I do come down to stay I try to stay in wildwood and not north or the crest I hope that with north wildwood doing away with motels it doesn’t start a trend for the other parts of the island if that happens it’s going to be the end to the wildwood we know and love
Aww too bad. 😢 21st right? Stayed at the Sans Souci for years, right across the street. Hi Glenn and Mary! The Panoramic and another motel right in a row, same family owned all 3 we were told circa 2004
Yup more of the same in wildwood been driving to Florida cocoa beach passed couple of years almost guaranteed nice weather plenty to do in Orlando without Disney universal oh well 🤷🏻♂️
What has caused the massive rush to build condos in the last 20 years in the Wildwoods? Was the upkeep of the 1950s/1960s motels too much too and they sold just at the time condo builders were looking? Were laws changed to entice all the condo building...more annual tax revenue, year round living ...? Yes, time marches on but the Wildwoods were always Middle Class friendly now the Wildwoods cost are approaching Stone Harbor or Avalon prices.
Your right it is getting expensive but the wildwoods lost the magic it had back in the old days it’s not the same it’s getting more like ocean city Maryland
Does anyone remember the Beach Rest Motel...400blk of E. 25th St? Also, i have pictures of N. Wildwood from about 1967-69 that I'm having trouble finding where these places are today. Can anyone help?
Concerned citizens and vacationers who love the pure uniqueness of the Wildwoods have been shouting from the roof tops for decades….. only to be accused of being “anti progress”….. which is 💯untrue! What made Wildwood as a whole special and unique…….doowop architecture, the incredible amount of NEON that lined the miles of quaint streets, and the organized chaos of mixing the old with doowop! The themed craziness, it all worked together ….Lollipop Motel, Safari Motel, Jolly Roger, Sea Gull Motel, Pan Am, The Caribbean, Innsbrook Motel, The Windward, Starfire, Starlux, etc…..fascinating by day & eye candy(neon) by night….. there is no place in this world that is or was as unique as the Wildwoods ….. I squarely put the blame on the Zoning Commissions and the State of NJ. Why wasn’t the essence of architecture preserved?! If an old motel must be demolished…..zoning could have required a similar motel must replace it, permit a motel to build higher an add additional rooms for expansion. Zoning could have required the ALL neon must remain in place and preserved. If new condo’s are going to be built….REQUIRE a strong Doowop architecture.designed theme to them….. as for the parking issues…a few well place parking garages could help elevate that issue….. It’s heartbreaking what has happened to Wildwood…..and it didn’t have to be this way!
Seems pretty stupid if you ask me. Am I right in thinking that all of the current hotels and motels in that area will still be able to operate, they just won’t be able to get any new ones in that area?
A case in point is Champagne Island, which was originally approved as a motel but later saw its units sold as condominiums. While the approval was strictly for transient use, many buyers assumed they could reside there permanently. Recently, the city received a long-term lease request from an individual claiming to live in one of these transient units. People think since they purchase these can live in them full time, when they can't
@@WildwoodVideoArchive Sorry if I'm misunderstanding a part of this. I understand that legally they can't live in the units they buy, but what is the reason behind it? What makes it a transient unit?
The Crest is changing the same way. Both NWW and WWC are residential beynd the motels, with the Crest having a lot more motels. They'd prefer to have condos because of the annual property tax. And the expenses, regulations, and taxes on a NJ motel are out of sight.
It sure sounds like NWW doesn't want condotels due to parking. They want only condos or houses. NWW is residential and they want more of that. Not transients. The mayor isn't making any sense because with condotels or hotels you can restrict parking to 1 per unit and everyone else street parks a couple of blocks away.
Been gong to wildwood for over 40 years never once found free parking even when I worked on the pier when I was a teenager I had to pay to park my car cause there was no staff parking lots
So sad. That has been there forever!!! 😮😮😮😢😢😢 We used to stay at the The Matador at 16th st and the beach. Then we figured why stay there when we can rent an entire home in Sea Isle for what it cost to stay in a motel. That was back in the 80's and 90's. So we switched over to the home and were paying less for 2 weeks. Now forget about it!! Havent been to the shore in over 12yrs because of the CrAzY pRiCeS!!! Insane😮😮😮...way too much money to be thrown on a rental when u need to pay bills and afford groceries. Very sad Used to love walking to Hungry Joes for groceries and take out. Its all gone now. Even 16th st liquor is gone. All condos replaced everything that USED to be.....😢😮😢😮😢😮RIP North Wildwood days❤
All this talk about how Wildwood is finished due to cost and motel conversions, I don't believe it. It's expensive everywhere. Money is being invested into Wildwood from everywhere and that doesn't happen to a town that's dying. There's boardwalk reconstruction. New restaurants everywhere such as the Seaport Pier, the Point Tiki bar, Starbucks, Steve’s Prince of Stakes, the Honky Tonky country Bar... can't name them all. It would be nice to retain Wildwood's nostalgia and it's 60's decor, but does that really matter to the next generation who will come to Wildwood and spend lots of money? Wildwood is great and always will be.
It stinks! All greed. Appreciate your caring & sharing wholeheartedly for Wildwood, you are our voice! Keep up trying to fight to save our motels.

I find it hard to believe that Motels are not a cash cow in the Wildwoods… Thankful for companies like Moreys that care about history
Long live North Wildwood motels
The Jersey Shore was my family's traditional vacation spot for many years, and we spent a week in Wildwood for 18 of them, in the very motel shown in this video. We LOVED The Ivanhoe, and it breaks my heart to even THINK that it's going to be demolished.
It’s the same way in OC Md.
It's the greedy developers from new York area that r making it difficult for the middle class workers who want take thre families on decent vacations
They already are. Prices are crazy.
It is crazy at this point I can take my whole family down to an all inclusive or a cruise in the Caribbean for cheaper.
Bidenomics at work.
You still have some in the Crest. My family still has The Red Horse Motel in the Crest. Just like it was since the 60's minus the golf course😢
Hence, why your channel is so important.
It was nicer
Too congested today. Now, I accompany my adult daughter and grandchildren. We were only able to afford 5 days to stay at a hotel. I hope they don't tear down more. Unbelievable how prices have increased over the last 74 years of my life. No end in sight
Blessings to you and your lovely wife.
Toni Suppa.....miss them all!
God bless.
Corporate greed and greedy politicians
Here's the thing, condominium development results in full-time residents, and full-time residents don't spend the same amount on tourist attractions as a weekender. The Boardwalk is going to suffer if the only customers are residents, and we have just watched this with the fall of Gillian's Wonderland in OCNJ. Also, New Jersey apparently has tough laws for hotels/motels and they type of insurance that the owners need to carry, making the motels/hotels that we know and love more difficult to operate.
Correct… you start affecting local economy it will falter and be no more at some point
Finally 100k congratulations all the hard work has paid off…let’s go 200k.
As a doo wop fan it is very sad to see these motels demolished and all the history behind it
Agree 💯
My favorite is the Conder that I grew up with since I was born. They did update from owners to new technology.
Thanks for memories Wild Wood ...
you could've been going to way better places for the saem money dang
Are you sure this is accurate? To me, this actually sounds like an effort by the city in some way to instead PRESERVE hotel/motels since, with the shift from motel rooms to condos, transient use is diminishing. In other words, what they DON'T want, is people living in their "newly-converted condos" year round. Thereby preserving available hotel space. (@Joey, see typo @ 5:54 - 'permanent', not 'permitted').
Isn't there a historical society that could stop this insanity? These little hotels made vacation affordable for middle class families to stay a week.
Zaber's was a great restaurant long gone
Wow. My wife and I stayed at the Ivanhoe in the late 70's and most of the 80's. Tony and Margeurite, the owners at the time, became friends. Sorry to hear that it may be torn down.
This is so sad! This is where my family and friends stay each July. We used to stay at 1501 Oceanside but that got turned into conos. So sad!!
Congratulations on 100k subs you deserve it
I love 21st St.
We used to stay at the Cozy Inn during the 70's, home made Italian dinners, great memories. It's gone now, shoved some condos in there.
Wildwood of old is long gone.....Haven't been back in over 10 yrs after spending much of my life there....
I did their Hvac service for a decade
that place is tired
the original owners didnt take care of it like they used to
age catches up to everyone and the buildings
sad
i enjoyed going there in the summer fix the Hvac
Our family vacationed at the Ivanhoe for many years in the eighties and truly enjoyed it. Sorry to hear the future may see it demolished.
Makes me sad. The motel you were standing in front of makes me want to stay there so bad! It's like a little mid century diamond
Thanks for keeping it real. The shore is changing alright.
Sad times are changing faster and faster … memories are are fading really quick
Back in 1967 while in high school we would take a bus from center city Phila to Wildwood ( $5 round trip ) then would rent a room on Glenwood Avenue for $10 for the weekend. So for only $25 we had great weekends that summer. Mack's pizza was only 25¢ a slice.
It's all about revenue, a motel will pay an amount for the whole building whereas individual condos or houses will each pay, so a100 unit condo building each unit will pay property tax, plus the buildings owner will pay property tax on the building.
And that’s why rentals are so expensive!!! For the price they ask people can stay at an all inclusive resort- it’s very bad in the long run
I’m so saddened by all the changes to wildwood 😢 It was always the vacation my family looked forward to at the end of summer (for over 20 years) I wish I could have my grandchildren experience it the same way their parents did !
i always stay at the Ivanhoe been going there since 1982
It's really such a shame that more and more motels are going away. It's so hard to find a good motel in the summer with vacancy.
What I am misunderstanding about the Ivanhoe not being able to be used for condotel use?
If its because of not having enough parking to provide for two spaces per unit, they could always combine units, resulting in larger but less overall units, and therefore having enough parking leftover for more than one vehicle per unit. Plus, that would allow for the units to be viewed as more desirable to some that want something larger, both to live in whenever they wish, and units put in the rental pool when someone books a room at the motel.
no, it's the issue of people wanting to live there full time when they legally can't.
@@WildwoodVideoArchive so if I buy a condo/motel room I am not allowed to live there full time ?! lol what a waste of money
That is sad, I wonder if I will still go to Wildwood. I went to Ivanhoe at least 10 times in the past 15 years.
Motels gone the boardwalk and rides will soon follow
That's really sad to hear about the ivanhoe, from what I remember the people that own Panaromic own the ivanhoe also cause if you want to book one spot at either motel you could cause it was the same price, hope they don't do that though
Yes it has gotten very expensive to stay down in Wildwood. In fact last summer we stayed at a Hampton inn outside of AC and drove the half hour to Wildwood. It was much cheaper than staying in town. $200 a night compared to $300-$500 a night. Plus free breakfast. When we do stay in Wildwood, we only do it on the off season.
What is the name of the place next to the Ivanhoe that is going condo?
the next block over is SurfAve
Which street is the demarcation between Wildwood and North Wildwood?
Selling our history for a quick buck......pathetic.
Thanks Joey. So sad , but I guess I understand. Any word on the Florentine Motel? We weren't down this summer, but stayed there for many years.
OMG, that looks just like the one my family stayed at back in the 70s. 3-4 blocks from beach? Hobbled together mini golf tucked back in the back corner?
Where was the Maryann hotel does anyone remember
This is due to the decay of the nighttime boardwalk crowd. It is much more difficult for a hotel to refuse service than a private landlord. Less hotels mean less undesirables causing problems while most of us are trying to enjoy a family vacation.
Damn, Joe, that’s a great sign. I’ll miss it! Ask for the signs!
Are the motels already in North Wildwood still allowed to be open as a motel? Our go to motel is the Cardinal.
motels that are motels will stay motels. It's only about future motels
I’m a single person and am a senior and have physical problems
When I do come down to stay I try to stay in wildwood and not north or the crest I hope that with north wildwood doing away with motels it doesn’t start a trend for the other parts of the island if that happens it’s going to be the end to the wildwood we know and love
The pool looks halfway drained which is also considered winterized you dont necissarily have to drain it
Love wildwood crest the old Regal plaza,Pier 6600,and The Grand,at the end of Wildwood crest.
Were laws changed to entice all the condo building...more annual tax revenue, year round living
...?
Yes, time marches on but the Wildwoods were always Middle Class friendly now the Wildwoods cost are approaching Stone Harbor or Avalon prices.
my favorite was the Packard 26th and surf
Your right it is getting expensive but the wildwoods lost the magic it had back in the old days it’s not the same it’s getting more like ocean city Maryland
Those motels were paradise for me!
Does anyone remember the Beach Rest Motel...400blk of E. 25th St? Also, i have pictures of N. Wildwood from about 1967-69 that I'm having trouble finding where these places are today. Can anyone help?
Hey Joey.. how do I buy Christmas ornaments I go to your store and it just shows me shirts ?
Hey. This is the link here thewildwoodboardwalk.etsy.com
Concerned citizens and vacationers who love the pure uniqueness of the Wildwoods have been shouting from the roof tops for decades….. only to be accused of being “anti progress”….. which is 💯untrue!
What made Wildwood as a whole special and unique…….doowop architecture, the incredible amount of NEON that lined the miles of quaint
streets, and the organized chaos of mixing the old with doowop!
I was bummed when they knocked down the Lurae on Surf between 6th & 7th, it was a well maintained property when they knocked it down.
Since the roar to the shore motorcycle rally was deemed to low class for Wildwood I haven't been in that dive town.
The Crest is changing the same way. Both NWW and WWC are residential beynd the motels, with the Crest having a lot more motels. They'd prefer to have condos because of the annual property tax. And the expenses, regulations, and taxes on a NJ motel are out of sight.
Is anything happening with the Astronaut Hotel?
No idea. I haven’t heard anything
stayed at the Ivanhoe several times, always enjoyed my stay sad to see things go:(
It sure sounds like NWW doesn't want condotels due to parking. They want only condos or houses. NWW is residential and they want more of that. Not transients. The mayor isn't making any sense because with condotels or hotels you can restrict parking to 1 per unit and everyone else street parks a couple of blocks away.
I’d be so sad to see the Ivanhoe disappear into history.
Been gong to wildwood for over 40 years never once found free parking even when I worked on the pier when I was a teenager I had to pay to park my car cause there was no staff parking lots
Hello those type of motels fit down to the shore I love staying in those vintage motels keep them don't demolish them
So sad. That has been there forever!!! 😮😮😮😢😢😢
We used to stay at the The Matador at 16th st and the beach. Very sad
Used to love walking to Hungry Joes for groceries and take out. Its all gone now. Even 16th st liquor is gone. All condos replaced everything that USED to be.....😢😮😢😮😢😮RIP North Wildwood days❤
Nothing stays the same
The 80s in 90s was the best times on the broadwalk. Move on
All this talk about how Wildwood is finished due to cost and motel conversions, I don't believe it.
I stayed there in the seventies
Well prices are going to come down
They can keep them.
