For many years, local shop owners tried to petition for the repeal of the blue laws as pressures for retail sales however, there was a department store in Ocean City called Staton’s department store, and it was run by a man named Mr. Staton, and when the repeal of the laws was gaining speed in the mid 1970s Mr. Staton ran a two page ad in the Ocean City sentinel ledger sent the ad read Mr. Staton says no Sunday sales and that was that .
Four months a year it was a very busy place, but I have strong memories of the other months of the year when you could walk on the boardwalk and see nobody ride your bike everywhere. All the stores and houses were boarded up. It was a ghost town in the winter months.
The official song of Ocean City went like this and as we would drive back from Road football games, we would sing it on the bus Ocean City. We are proud of you. We love every inch of your shore in the summertime in the winter time. Who could ask for more Ocean City by the ocean and down by the beautiful down by the beautiful Bay.
My father had two restaurants in Ocean City. I lived there until 1976 when our family moved to Florida. It was a great place to grow up. Ocean City high school was a fine high school played football. had my prom at the music.Pier When it was your home and you lived there year-round, it was such a difference between summer and winter because in the summer everybody was busy trying to make enough money to survive the winter.
Interesting history. Fascinating that the blue laws lasted until the 80's. Further north along the coast in Ocean Grove, another Methodist camp meeting town, Sunday bathing is still prohibited before noon when church services end. The few times my family ventured to Ocean City when I was a child, we always drove down the street where Grace Kelly's father had a summer home.
Yep, they really wanted to keep Ocean City a family-friendly place. That's so cool that your family would drive past Grace Kelly's home. I never thought about that. I interviewed the folks from The Ocean Grove Historical Society. Great people! I want to get down to to see the new pier they built.
I have many great memories of family vacations during my life, This year, 2021, my wife and I will vacation in OC for the first time in about six or seven years. Sadly, for me, the Christmas Store that was near the very end of this video is gone, moved downtown. It was one of my favorite stops on the boardwalk.
Interesting and enjoyable video. Thank you. As an aside, part of the Sindia's rudder mechanism (visible at 19:12 looking like a pump on the left side of the photo) was salvaged and is now on display outside of the recently restored life saving station at 4th and Atlantic. They have some other artifacts at the historical museum too.
Thanks Nate and thanks for that info! I'll definitely have to check out the restored life saving station next time I'm in Ocean City. I didn't even know it was there.
Most of those Blue Laws should have been repealed decades earlier. Some examples were: You could buy a egg sandwich...but you couldn't buy a dozen eggs. You could buy a Playboy Magazine...but you couldn't buy a Bible (because it was hardback.) You could buy a ham sandwich...but you couldn't buy a 1/2 lb. of sliced ham. You could buy a hamburger...but you couldn't buy a pound of ground beef. You couldn't buy toys (including buckets and shovels for the beach), batteries, clothing, canned goods or just about anything else. I remember in the late 70's until the Blue Laws were repealed, many Boardwalk stores would open at 12:01AM Monday for an hour or two so visitors could make purchases before "heading home" after the weekend. P.S. Swimming and going to the beach on Sunday's was either overturned or not enforced many decades before Blue Laws were repealed.
They should’ve been, but there was a man named Mr. Staton. He was a short little guy that walked very fast everywhere he went in his department store. He said no Sunday sales, and there were no Sunday sales.
And now it is a relative of Avalon, ridiculously expensive real estate, and no community. I was a resident for nearly 40 years and left, families can no longer live year 'round, they all go offshore to afford an actual home. You can romanticize all you want, the entire island has changed, hey, Jay sold Wonderland because he declared BK a few years go, and now it will become a big condo complex.
Sadly the python roller coaster got torn down for gale force but to its credit gale force is a better ride Sad to see my first looping roller coaster be non existent now But great vid I loved it!
Thanks! I didn't realize they replaced the Python with Galeforce until I was there last year and by that time I had completed the Ocean City chapter. It looks awesome but I didn't get a chance to ride it.
I met my wife in Ocean City back in 1991 and we are still together to this day! I love you, Gloria!!!
Beautiful! 🙂

Sure seems like us common folk are getting squeezed out.
Does anyone remember the Lennox (summer apts.)?
