Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i (2024) - a really good notebook!

- When it comes to premium performance notebooks that have you covered for many different use cases, the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i was already one of the best options when it was first introduced in 2023.
The updated Meteor Lake model for this year takes the same overall formula but improves quite a few areas that have been problematic before.

I bought one with RTX 4060 and 32GB, teal green and matte mini-LED. Added a 4TB Samsung 990pro to the second ssd slot, and it's my dream travel content creation companion.
Yes it creaks now and again, but that is literally the only thing I could complain about. I have battery saver active 100% of the time except for when editing/gaming and the time away from wall is more than enough for me. It's a great laptop!
Oh sweet, so double sided ssds can fit in the second slot?

How much battery life do you get?
@@edeka3 8+ hours of office apps. 1-2 hours if gaming or heavy AI processing.
I’m looking for architectural related working laptop. This Yoga might be a good one! Thank you for your review!
Just a suggestion, I think you should add an "i" next to the 9. I think alot of Lenovo buyers can appreciate it, since the i stands for intel, without it it usually means an AMD laptop.
What Lenovo buyers would actually like is if the brand kept their sku’s consistent across different regions and markets. Reviewers are always getting the best config that are nowhere to be found on the Lenovo website. So misleading and frustrating #rant
Apparently Lenovo dropped the "i" on the name of this model. This seems to be the first review about this laptop, and this sku is not available yet, at least not in North America.

Glad you enjoyed it!
Could you please review the Yoga Pro 7 (14imh9)? The high spec version (ultra 9, 32gb ram, rtx 4060) looks like a 14 inch version of the yoga pro 9i and for some reason there are NO REVIEWS for it!
there is an indonesia review of it, but on rtx 4050
Don't suppose you found any good reviews, or bought the Pro 7? I have the Pro 9i and it's a bit large for my preference, so would love if there's an equally capable smaller option.
Is that a matte miniLED panel? I wish they offered this version in the US!
Yep!
The best 2024 X86 prosumer laptop on the market for those that are engineers, video editors, and part-time gamers. Also, no "Recall" software.
Thanks for the thorough presentation. I am also looking for something very portable. For 4K-5K video editing in davinci and large video exports, would you rather go with this one or with HP spectre x360 32GB RAM ? (If macbook is not an option)
For Resolve, a fast dedicated GPU is almost mandatory, so the Yoga Pro 9 might be the better pick here.
I’m thinking of getting either yoga pro 9i, yoga slim 7i 14 or yoga pro 7 14. Is it really worth to pay more for 9i? It’s mostly for everyday use and a little bit of photoshop work that’s it

He is EXTREMELY handsome!!! I bought this laptop a few weeks ago and am very happy. 32gb memory.
Very nice review. Like that you put the pros and cons and you detailed as much as possible.
I like the display, but it is bummer that if you want battery you need to reduce brightness very much and refresh rate.
Also worried a little about the fan noise and performance on battery.
In my area this is kinda expensive: €2,572.
Do you think this is worth it? I bought and MacBook Pro M3 Max 32GB, 14CPU, 30GPU at €3,656.
What would you recommend? Return the macbook and buy this one and have 1k for monitor, accessories, etc?
I intend to keep the laptop for a longer time, 5 years at least.
Get the yoga and spend the rest on accessories. Great laptop!
Go for the Asus zephyrus G14
@@RSainman I wanted an 16" laptop that I could also use for work.
I liked the G16, but with a good spec it was priced the same as the MacBook. In the end I've went with MacBook Pro M3 Max.
What do you prefer and recommend, Yoga Pro 9i or Zephyrus G16?
Both around the same price in Germany with 4060,32gb (2300e)
I don't game. I am a mix/master engineer/producer.
I also couldn't choose between these two. 😢
From reliability/warranty point asus lost some... points :) If it is for work with constant visible interface would also avoid oled (burn in)
id go with yoga
The only reason I'd go for the G16 now is build quality/appearance.
Although OLED might be a problem for me since the programs I use have a lot of static parts for hours...
I'm not sure how that would affect the OLED if used on full brightness where there's a lot of light.
I thought the Yoga's touch screen was a gimmick, but I think its nice to have.
It's a tough choice. I am daily driving the Blade 16 right now to get a real-world impression of the potential burn-in problem.
But I would go as far as to say that I do not think it will be an issue. But it will be some time before we have reliable information about it.
I would personally probably go for the G16 because of the precalibrated display profiles for sRGB (I need that for video grading).
If it weren't for that, it would be the Yoga.
Liked. I wonder how the IPS screen compares to an OLED screen. Thanks!
Having tested both the latest MiniLED and OLED screens, I would say it really comes down to personal preferences.
The MiniLEDs get (a lot) brighter and usually come with matt options and higher PWM frequencies.
OLEDs still look much more "natural", especially on the desktop, where you can get a blooming and "washed out" appearance with a MiniLED.
@@NotebookcheckReviews Thank you.
It's great. I'd like to see an all metal frame though for this fall or early next year, as well as the Ryzen AI 300 series with an RTX 5070 or 5080.
It is a full metal chassis in this one already!
Is going to be some laptops powered by snapdragon x elite with number pad?
This is more powerfull than the snapdragon 😂 the snapdragon is just for media consumption that will offer you long battery life , is pretty much a competitor of the MacBook Air
Please do not forget in the future to mention the weight and dimensions in the specs. Important for laptops
Sure, but we also have that information on our website!
@@NotebookcheckReviews Thanks, but it was not so easy to find it, had to scroll down the reviews, or just use the search function. Watching videos is different from doing an active research on the site
For gaming, which is better, the G16 or the Yoga Pro 9i? Isn't the ROG G16 a "gaming" brand?
The yoga is really good, but keep in mind the psu is too low wattage for full usage. It will slowly drain the battery. If you message Lenovo about this they might send you a bigger one
I've heard that none of the ports, including the HDMI port, actually connect directly to the dGPU. Is that true? Also, can you confirm the spec of the HDMI port? They say 2.1, but also list a max of 4k/60, which isn't in line with 2.1.
Yes, no ports connect to the dGPU directly. It will pass thru the iGPU. This helps save battery when using an external monitor. You are correct about the hdmi port, there's sub categories of 2.1.
@@iz723 Do you have this laptop? If so, do images smear on the screen with Mini-LED screen? Specifically when scrolling on a white webpage with dark images or black text on a white screen? Seems to be very common on Reddit.
@@Reaper31292 Yes I do in 60hz. But it's not very bothersome. And in 165hz it's not noticeable at all. I wouldn't be concerned about it too much.
@@iz723 Thank you for answering these questions. It's really helpful. I've got a couple more if you don't mind answering.
Regarding the smearing: This is only in rare situations where the screen is white and there's dark content right? For example, if I wanted to set the refresh rate to 60 and play a game (I cap at 60 and use VSYNC), would I notice any smearing since most games are really colorful?
Any estimates on battery life for light work like office, chrome, mail clients, messaging apps? Some people say they're getting 2 hours some around 6. I'm assuming this is in large part due to screen brightness.
Finally, any eyestrain from the display at all? There's apparently a flicker, but it seems to be at such a high frequency it shouldn't bother people. I have seen some complaints though.
@@Reaper31292 Sure I don't mind.
The smearing is only related to the backlight zones not the lcd layer , and it only effects when the zones (even in sdr mode) have to quickly switch from very dark to very bright. In normal scenes in games at 60 hz you won't see anything. Only if there's a bright white sky and a dark object crosses it fast, then you might see something for example. But tbh, I just keep it at 165hz unless I need the battery life.
Battery life is not great. In office apps you can get around 5hrs if you set the display to 60hz, enable battery saver, and lower screen brightness, and make sure you're in Optimus and not in DGPU only mode. Yes the brightness has a big effect.
The screen is really nice to look at for long periods. No eyestrain or flickering that I can tell. The PWM is at a super high frequency, not really an issue. I think some people have faulty panels that flicker.
I hope this helps. I really think this is one of the best laptops you can buy. The speakers are insane (set Dolby atmos to Music setting always), you can feel really immersed, I even prefer them to headphones sometimes.
Did your configuration come with the glossy panel?
No, just the matt version.
I did experience the glossy SKU tho in 2023.
@@NotebookcheckReviews Do you prefer the matte one?
Does it support 140w usb charging?

I currently have legion 7 Gen 7 22 model full amd And I love it well I don't love is If I need to take your traveling with me I have a bunch of other stuff I have to usually sacrifice something just to not go over the weight limit so I'm hoping to get something that's a little more sleeker and slim but still provide enough power I don't game as much as I used too mainly is doing photo and video edits now
The Yoga might be worth looking into then.
@@NotebookcheckReviews yeah, but also as other comments I've pointed out if they do upgrade it for next year with these newer CPUs What is the likely potential that they might perform even better and will they come with dedicated GPUs or be a whole all-in-one set up like how they have it for the macs

Yes it does, but only for internal display.
Great video and review thanks. I got the glossy, touch 3.2K Mini LED with RTX 4060 in the UK. Very impressed with it. I'm finding display calibration and profiling difficult to match my calibrated Eizo desktop monitor. By default, it seems a bit oversaturated. I tried your ICC profile for the matte screen, but your profile from your 2023 review of the glossy screen seems better. I presume the 2024 glossy display is the same model, so should be OK? I also tried profiling in SDR using my old i1 Display Pro with Calibrite Profiler using White LED setting, but it looked oversaturated. That colorimeter is only rated to 1000 nits though. I'd have to get a new HL model to access the Mini LED setting. I trust your ICC profiles more as they are done with a spectrophotometer which works will all display tech.

4:10 So, you really can't use the miniLED local dimming in SDR?
I don't know why Windows laptop manufacturers can't get this right. It is SO important! Vast majority of content out there is still in SDR!
SDR content on my iPad 12.9 with miniLED or LG OLED TV looks miles better than low-contrast displays for very obvious reasons. And they both do it "right" easily. It can't possibly be that complicated!
You can it just won't be ideal
It is hard to tell, but it looks like they drastically reduced the "effect" of the separate lighting zones to reduce blooming on the desktop.
Compared to traditional IPS panels, contrast and brightness is still above and beyond!
I'm in a dilemma to either get this yoga pro 9i or the legion 9i 🤦🏽♂️

I think a better comparison would maybe be the Legion 7?
10:32 I hate how manufacturers always skimp on the power bricks, just let us use a bigger one if we want and get full performance/not have to deal with battery drain.
Is it really such a widespread problem? Again, it will most likely not be a massive problem during "normal", even heavy use cases.
@@NotebookcheckReviews I mean gaming is a pretty heavy use case that stresses both the CPU and GPU. I've had four gaming laptops in the past and every single one has had an issue with battery discharge while plugged in gaming.
I do respect Lenovo's approach, as they let you keep full performance while Asus heavily throttles the CPU to keep the battery from draining when not at 100%. But either way, this is hurting your battery health by putting it through charge cycles when you shouldn't even be using it and in some cases can lead to the battery discharging to 0% and shutting off (while plugged in).

It’s excellent but the next version, either with Strix (or less likely, Lunar Lake) should be even better. Slightly more power but a lot more efficient. So it’ll run quieter & cooler and have much better battery life. That’s the hope anyway.
I think strixpoint would be more realistic. Intel had an unreased yoga in their demo area during their Lunar Lake showcase, but I would assume that one will come without a dedicated GPU.

That is indeed a very weird limitation for you guys over there. Maybe it will come later?
Damn i just bought the lenovo legion 7i in white w/ 4070 240hz and drooling on this one
So did I. I was thankfully able to return the legion 7.
:D What is wrong with the Legion 7?
Or is it about the display?
Absolutely nothings wrong with it. I love my 7i ❤️
Poor QC. The webcam and several buttons were defect. The laptop got uncomfortably hot to the touch as mentioned by many reviewers.
I personally didn’t mind the display, it looked decent to me.
I wasn’t keen on the white finish either or the RGB, it felt and looked less premium than all metal chassis.
The touchpad felt cheap and the click was unsatisfying.
The fingerprint scanner got super toasty to the point I couldn’t use it.
The speakers are horrendous. I just turned off the speakers entirely because the sound was so bad.
What's stopping me from buying it is the miniLED display, I don't want anything other than an OLED display.
Fair point!
I was able to find one on display at best buy, and I personally really liked the screen!
I also think the keyboard feels really good to type on, but that might be personal preference
If you have time, I definitely recommend checking out your local store and seeing if you can get to play with it in person
@@LivingGuy484 yeah, you're right.
I bought this one and really enjoying it .
Couple of things
1) blooming is really bad despite thousands of dimming zones. I am not TOO bothered by it but while using normal desktop stuff with hdr on, things like browsing Reddit with dark mode on make it super obvious
In actual movies or games I have not seen it . Even horror games .
2) the fans are quite loud . I think by measurements they seem to be as loud as a g16 2024 so it may be just that I’m not used to gaming laptop
In balanced mode they are audible but not too annoying (60w) . I would say most games are playable in this mode but there is probably some bottleneck as in some games (like battlefield 2042 ) I go from 100+ fps to heavy stutter , not present in performance mode . It is really random and does not go away even with very low settings .
In performance mode this thing can chew through anything. I sent to it except for 3.2k resolution native gaming which I never expected it to handle lol
Overall very pleased . Mini led looks amazing but I don’t leave hdr always on due to blooming . It can do 100w gpu but I’m mostly gaming on 60w balanced . I say most games work well enough with tweaking on balance and fan noise is way better .
About the discharge rate … it’s weird . I have battery conservation off which supposedly charges the battery to 75-80% . When I check the battery I see it go up to 80 then down to 75 all the time . I am not sure if I’m having the power draw issue or just Lenovo being weird
Probably because Lenovo lets it draw more than the AC adapter can handle when gaming, leading to battery drain. The same thing happens with my Legion Pro 7i.
Weird in our testing we have only been able to reproduce the battery discharge in our stress tests and in performance mode.
There are other people who have asked lenovo for higher wattage charger and that fixes the issue. If i remember correctly 230 watts charger that fixes this issue. Lower wattage charger holds back its performance.
I really wish they kept the 14.5 inch display variant.
check the yoga pro 7 14imh9.....high end spec looks like the 14 inch version of the yoga pro 9i but for some reason there are no reviews for it
Money being not really the issues... But the ECOSYSTEM being one on the long run: I must confess that I'm torn between the Yoga and an Apple MacBook Air 15 with FULL SPECS - 24/1TB or even 2TB. My killer concern here are (already paid-for) licenses for Cubase 13 Pro, Ableton Live 12, Propellerhead Reason 13 and DaVinci Resolve 19 Pro (Beta 5.1). And a couple of other non-trivial apps. So, SERIOUSLY - what would be your preference if you were to spend something between 2500-3000 Euros? (And Fabbois, PLEASE JUST SHUT UP - I'm NOT ASKING YOU!)
And for some strange reason I cannot really put my finger on... I do NOT trust the noise tests. Is this beast REALLY quiet? REALLY? At the end of the day, that is the ONLY test I actually care for. I CANNOT stomach noisy notebooks - end of story. So how quiet is this thing, really?
lenovo laptop naming is such a mess
Especially in the Yoga line-up!
Numpads are a complete deal-breaker for me now. I tried the Galaxy Book3 Pro 16-inch, and it isn't very good. I am from an older generation, so teaching an old dog new tricks is probably the main reason. However, if you do not need a numpad, it is really a terrible choice. Apple got it right there with the spacious keyboard and centred trackpad.
Apart from that, I am not a fan of Lenovo QC based on my sad experience, but that was a while back; maybe they have improved. Also, I would be wary of buying any Core Ultra as it is a new design, and I suspect the next generation will be more refined and have much better battery life.
So easy pass...
Valid concerns! You are missing out on a really good notebooks tho ;)
This is a heavy laptop
First one here
Congrats, Mate!
Horrible timing for these Core Ultra laptops. With Lunar Lake and Snapdragon X chips being out now I wouldn't buy anything else.
I think the new chips target a very different segment of the market.
Both Lunar Lake and Snapdragon are much more aimed at thin and light machines, whereas both Meteor Lake and AMD Strixpoint will also be combined with dedicated GPUs.
@@NotebookcheckReviews in the Computex presentation I watched Intel kept comparing Lunar Lake to Meteor lake and saying how Lunar Lake outperformed it in every way, while using less power.
I feel like they’re going for the same market and trying to keep people from abandoning the x86 architecture for Snapdragon on ARM.
tired from this synthetic bench marks...need to show real world use, for creators not for gamers . 4070 laptop version is just OK for creators (like me) who using heavy SW as Nuke, Houdini, MAYA etc. on the go, the 4090 laptops are good for gaming because the screen is not for color accuracy at all...to bad...waiting M4 series to see what it can do...
Benchmarks give a way to accurately and precisely compare laptops unlike subjective random usage.
We do have Blender benchmarks on our website. For everything else, you still have to keep in mind that, while we would love to test everything (and we have to stick to standardized benchmarks to keep things comparable between all the notebooks we test), there is only so much we can do, so we have to keep it "mainstream" at some point.
lol I brought this one last year. headache. headache. screen flickering. Lenovo doesn't even acknowledge the problem.

I think it's in the correct spot for most people. The position should be relative to the chassis overall, in this case it's centered with regards to the letter keys, which is right where you want it to avoid unneccessary touches while typing, especially if palm rejection sucks.
