    Got to love a good PC builder. He asked me if I wanted Windows 10 "cleaned up". I asked how much, and he said "oh, it's free", so I said fine! Followed this video and every setting was already disabled!

    I just built a new PC and it's my first Windows PC since like 2001. I've seen a few of these videos and they all go over similar settings but i think no matter what your uncheck, disable or delete, Microsoft will always have something in the system to track you.
    Thanks for the video. I'll definitely be doing this once home on Monday.

    I usually uninstall programs like OneDrive, Cortana and Edge Browser using an uninstaller like Revo because it also checks and removes leftover folders and registry files. It will create a restore point for you too.I had done many of the steps mentioned here, but others like task scheduler and the regedit settings I did not. I am creating a restore point after your suggested settings as well. Thanks for this informative tutorial and explaining things clearly instead of just linking to a script that doesn't tell you exactly what is being done. Much appreciated.

    Good to explain this and show people where those settings are, but as you said, on the next Windows update they could all turn back on again. As an IT Pro, I haven't got time to do all this continually, so highly recommend O&O Shutup 10. Each setting (and there are hundreds) can be individually unchecked, or you can chose different levels of removal (recommended is usually enough). Then, one click and a reboot later and it's all done (you can also take recovery point backups before applying). Much easier for the average user, and it's free. Also, I'd recommend disabling the 'Connected User Experience and Telemetry' service (DiagTrack), which is one service that will stop tons of telemetry collection.

Thankfully they pulled a stunt that really urinified me, so over the course of a week I cleaned out all my personal tools and whatnot and retired (after 62 years in the business) at 1430 hours one fine Friday, the last day of the pay period.
      As I was already on full SS and on Railroad Retirement as well, it was satisfying to send a Company Wide Email telling everyone my retirement party would commence at the local watering hole at 1500, nuked my hard drive, then called the GM from the street, informing him my keys, security badges and nuked laptop was at the Security desk downstairs.
      HR went into hysterics by my not doing an "exit interview", for which they demanded I come in. I sent them an invoice for a day's consulting service, payable in advance. Never happened. Great video, very well explained, thanks. But it would have been so much better if you had explained the exact purpose of each step - i.e. how it helps privacy, so I can decide whether to do that step or not, as you said at the beginning. You only give this info once or twice, and it's not obvious in quite a few cases. Thanks again.

    • @Seriouskai
      @Seriouskai 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, it's really simple. Turning the options of stops Windows from sending data to Microsoft and it's partners without your consent. It helps privacy by giving you privacy, can't really explain it easier honestly. Leave the options on, and you're not completely private and someone somewhere is gathering data from you.

    Thanks for sharing a step-by-step process without using scripts or programs. If you are running Win 10/11 Pro, can you specify a policy instead of using regedit? Is a policy permanent (not affected by Microsoft updates)? BTW, can you make these changes by defining a policy?

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yes you can change this setting in group policy editor. However, I don't like going to group policy editor because a lot of people have the home version and editing the registry works in all the versions of windows.
      I've tested this with many different systems in this setting does not revert with Windows update. I've even made the setting in 2004 and upgraded to 21H2 and the setting stay the same. So editing the registry is permanent.

    The reason people use the scripts or programs to do it, is because it changes settings system wide. In Win 10, if you uninstall things like One Drive or other MS apps, when the next build is installed they come back. You need to deprovision the package to prevent it from re-installing.

    I work with IT security everyday, and the only thing I don't agree with in this video, is your recommendation of Windows Defender. We can agree it's better than nothing, but sadly Windows Defender is not good enough. I have seen that to many times, using Windows Defender would for me be the same as driving with your seatbelt behind your bag, but plug into safety, as long nothing happens everything is great. With that said great video, keep up the good work :)

    • @CyberCPU

      As a full-time computer technician I can tell you that I see just as many computers in my shop infected with all the major antiviruses installed as I do Windows Defender.
      I haven't seen any statistical difference in detection rate with Windows defender and other antiviruses. With that said, the reason I recommend Windows Defender is because out of all the different retail antiviruses it takes the least amount of system resources.

Now i did have a problem at first with "allow telemetry" and i wondered about 32 or 64 which mine is a 64 bit. But once i put the two words together at 32 it shut it down as they cannot get their "required diagnostic". Again, Thank you for being very cool and making it easy to follow for us not so good at knowing much about computers.

    Hi man. Allow Telemetry value 0 is not stopping windows to send required data. In your video it is showing off, but on my PC, this registry mod is not working. I believe Microsoft is also doing their best to turn this harder to do on your own. I am currently researching for for another solution. Beside this, great video, it is nice to see someone taking time for this kind of stuff and helping others who have no clue about what is happening behind the scenes.

    If you go to the Microsoft website it will tell you that clicking these things off turns it from checking it every time to some of the time. Like the first time you use that application is always sent to Microsoft, but not every time after that, just sometimes. Read carefully the description you are checking, because not giving you a benefit isn't a promise to not track. They even admit they can "accidentally" read your Office documents, when they check each one of them that you use macros in. That's pretty invasive.

    A good thing for people to know is how to make an ISO install file that will reinstall their computer as it is when they make the file so they can bring back their system easily whenever they have to reinstall it, which still seems to be something that still needs to be done every year or so. The cruft just builds and builds and fragments get left behind as you change your computer with time and it seems to cause it to slow down. It's good to just blow everything away and start over from time to time too. Of course ALWAYS back up stuff to an external drive as well as any other data that one might want to save.

    • @gordthor5351
      @gordthor5351 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      chris clark He said Windows security works well enough on it's own. I am done with McAfee. Every year I get bombarded one month earlier with a plethora of fearmongering warnings to get me to buy a new subscription. The only two options are to buy a subscription or "ACCEPT THE RISK!". What f#@king risk when I have 4 months left on my subscription? It's pathetic and annoying fearmongering. I'm just going to use Widows security now.

    @13:50 - Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
    I have done a 'Start menu' quick search for 'Diagnostics & feedback', however re-direct back to the same place. Yet again MS have moved, renamed, or hidden/buried useful things some-where¿.
    So more clicking, RegEdit, shell::{shortcuts} to get to basic settings (:Shacks-Head: at MS).
    Apart from the 'Bubble/Plastic UI' they have been trying to push since WinXP, has been none to very little performance improvements.
    The Win10 Live title and non-grouped taskbar application helpful for day to day workflow.
    Win11 Dark UI Color (notepad, explore windows) great, however the workflow/outlay usable.
    MS features for a long-time in the OS and apps have been add and removed due to performance issues (Office Word Paper-clip helper) or very a small amount of people using then, however what do you think bloat-ware dose and is!.
    MS need to under-standard they will get not get real user data using telemetry, if they plan to drive the company design/workflow for their OS from telemetry.
    as those whom turn it off are more adapted to using a computer for there personal workflow (if/when allowed).
    If MS plan to drive the company design/workflow for their OS from telemetry, they need to under-standard those whom turn it off/change setting are more adapted to using a computer for there personal workflow (if/when allowed).
    With this much tweaking and third-party software its time to move to Linux full-time.
    Where an update will not revert my settings, place more ads, install unwanted apps, pay for free apps on the MS store, and so on...
    Window 11 is like "Lipstick on a pig".

    Thank you for making this movie, it's lucky that beginners can see it because of the leading teaching and analysis of various considerations. The shapes that appear may be very special and novel to Asians; fortunately, the integration of browser extensions was successful this week, and TH-cam automatically generates subtitles for localization, so that I can understand half of it (there may be a problem of mistranslation), I am thankful for that! 謝謝你製作了這個影片,帶領式的教學與各種考量的分析說明,初學者能看到感到很幸運。出現的造形,令亞洲人感到很特別,尤其是在影片中,感覺很新奇;幸好這星期整合瀏覽器擴展成功,TH-cam 自動產生字幕本地化,才能理解一半(可能有翻譯錯誤的問題),謝謝你。( DeepL 翻譯 )

    Rich, I have tried to implement these ideas on windows 10 pro (fresh install on an old Dell G3). I actually bought a pro key off of VIPscd-key.. had to do a work around to get the key to work... Didn't use a Microsoft account however windows 10 has not auto offered to update to windows 11, maybe because of the Microsoft account? So, while attempting to do the edits in reg edit I came across that the system states incorrect parameters when trying to click ok or apply. Perhaps I need to get windows 11 before these settings can be changed? Seriously your videos are the only reason I am considering running windows 11 over Linux PopOS.

    Call me crazy but I do not believe a single bit that sliding a slider from "on" to "off" will do ANYTHING. Its proprietary closed source. They can do under the hood whateeeeeever they want. No matter if you slide some fancy sliders left or right.

    The only two things you suggested that I did not do was to uninstall One Drive and Teams, because I use both of those extensively for work. Just curious if keeping them sort of defeats the purpose of the other settings, giving MS a way in despite the other changes? Or am I still good while keeping them if I do everything else?

    • @userunknown1030
      @userunknown1030 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      nah it doesn't defeat the purpose because they can only monitor when you access teams or cloud with the other settings off there isn't much they can collect from that.

    I once ran one of those scripts without really knowing what it really did, and I got my browser under an "organisation", and some features were force disabled/enabled and my clipboard was gone. I tried to "Revert Changes", and even load the restore point I created beforehand, but none of them fixed the problem. It is only after a lot of research that I found out how to fix that. It's pretty annoying that sometimes it's everything or nothing

    I believe that all of those settings will need to be done for each user (or each account) that uses the physical computer?
    If so, it will have to be repeated for each user.
    I agree with our host stating that, although there are scripts that will do all or most of this, most folks will not understand what was changed, and will not be able to "un-change" the settings if they run into a problem -- because they will not know which setting caused the problem.
    I would like to know where each of those settings are stored. In other words, when you use the GUI and click this and that and change things, those changes are being stored somewhere in some file(s) -- perhaps the registry?
    There is likely a way to run a command for each of those changes that will update that same file, which could be run from the command prompt or the power shell.
    This would be helpful to understand, because then we could write our own .bat files to change what we want, and we would know exactly what we changed and where the change is stored. This will also make it somewhat automated to make the same changes for each user.
    Windows has gotten way more complicated, since the days of win.ini
    But that complication does not change the underlying principle that everything is stored in a file. Knowing which files, and which data within the files, would go a long way in understanding and maintaining our settings.
    Great video!

    I was using MS local account till I started watching your videos. I went in and applied most of your suggestions. And then I screwed up when I created my own local account. I did it and it was successful but I forgot to do it as an administrator. Now, I'm trying to figure out if I can recover the MS local account so that I can correct my mistake. Is there any way to do this or am I screwed for good? I had important work related folders that I need and I can't seem to access them under my new local account. Any help would be greatly appreciated...🙏🙏
