Sad fact my nephew said his french class gets passing grades based of on how much duo lingo they complete. They do no actual speaking or writing.

Duolingos Asian languages are not as good as their European... but actual speaking and writing is necessary for learning a language

We use Duolingo for Japanese, but it’s only really to help, it’s got nothing to do with marks

So I've been using duolingo for a while and after watching this video I can see that duolingo seems to be misinterpreted. So they point out about the Kanji and there being no way to actually know what it means without actually getting it wrong and then being told the answer. Kanji in duoling is introduced in the lessons telling you how to pronounce and read them first and then tell you the meaning. The guys were taking a "test" so all the help that's normally there to help you with knowing what the sentence is, is gone. Not saying that duolingo is the best, I just feel like it was misunderstood by this video.

No; you only think it’s “trial and error” because you jumped to a check point without taking the prior lessons. Had you done any, you’d know they drill you in the hiragana, then the kanji, then mix them up. So by the time you’re seeing that kanji and don’t recognize it, a learner on duolingo would know it because they would have been taught it previously with graduated repetitions, which help you remember it. In this video you guys aren’t trying Duolingo at all, you’re talking solely about the proficiency tests you’ve jumped to. You should redo the video after taking a few actual lessons to understand the teaching method, imo.

Duolingo is also spaced repetition...you cannot see it as you were somehow flying through it, I am doing Duolingo, it "forces" you to review in a spaced fashion. It progresses slowly as it aims for people who only have 20 minutes a day. Immersion requires someone who is in a position to devote many hours a day...guys, your attitude and the lack of ability to make a distinction based on your experience and observation...it is difficult to take you seriously.

I strongly dislike duolingo. Giving people sentences to translate already is not really a great learning method if you want to learn to think in a another language. The sentences they give you have no context which can make translating very difficult for a heavily context dependent language like Japanese. This is especially bad because Duolingo is very picky about how you translate the sentence. You should not be marked wrong because you didn't put a "a bit" in your translation. A teacher should use your answer to judge whether or not you understand rather than looking to see if your answer perfectly matches one of the answers that the software has deemed acceptable.
If I wanted to be told by someone that my correctly translated Japanese sentences are actually wrong, because they're different than what they wanted, I would subtitle anime.

Duolingo is extremely formal, I used the finnish course, and some Japanese before I switched to Mango. Anyways, with Duolingo you aren’t taught how to hold proper conversations, nor, do you learn informal. What people speak more of today, so, for beginner beginners duo might be alright to grasp some conversations, but more weathered speakers should move on to different platforms.

Hey the app updated also duolingo should give a everyday vocab use other apps to expand but also when you do lesson it teaches you how to translate word by word and if you are fluent you just get a general idea not the way you would of been taught that's why it's hard because skipping make you take a L
