    I love my T480, easily the best laptop I've ever owned, would highly recommend it for the "broke college student" crowd or anyone on a tighter budget. My second hand model came with a dodgy trackpad, and it was as simple as taking off the back cover, taking out the internal battery, and undoing 4 screws to get the old trackpad out!

      @@ghostbrandishjm5853 I have an i5 model without dedicated graphics, so I can only speak for that but I think this would mostly apply to those models too. Minecraft with a few optimization mods ran well, along with games like Rainworld and Terraria. But games such as Fortnite, R6 and CS2 wouldn't run on this laptop.
      Though, it has a thunderbolt port with support for an external GPU I believe, but I don't have the hardware to be able to test that out unfortunately.

      It's still good for those that don't need more than 4 cores. You have your RAM upgrades, you have your fantastic relaibility, and I have upgraded my T480 to an IGZO low-power screen (it's great), 32GB RAM, and 48Wh and 72Wh batteries. Not to mention that mine also has an i7-8550U and an MX150, and that makes the laptop usable even in the most demanding tasks like competitive-level Zoom calls as a programmer. There's a limit to the CPU power, sure, but what are you going to do on such a laptop? Play games? They're a giant waste of time and money. And it will handle video editing fine because it has Intel QSV.

    I've bought one back in december 2022, it's been 10 months now and I still think I made a great buy. It's not as upgradable as the often called "true ThinkPads", but it's enough for me. I've put 32GB of memory to it, replaced the WWAN card with another M.2 SSD (making it 512GB + 256GB), changed the keyboard for a backlit one, and it's perfect for me as is. I use it mainly for study and work (managing a store). It's got Windows 11 compatibility (although I use Solus) and no problem in running my day-to-day apps.

    i bought a thinkpad t480 back in 2020 for online school since my hp laptop stopped working and i needed a laptop RIGHT THEN. the parts of the thinkpad t480 that intrigued me were the external and internal battery combo, the replaceable keyboard (and the fact that thinkpad keyboards are amazing), the 2 sticks of user replacable ram, all the i/o, and the fact that thinkpads had a huge reputation for being durable (they were the only laptops allowed on the international space station for a long time), i was just set on the laptop. in the ~4 years that i've had this laptop i have abused it so much, i have done many things to this laptop that should have killed it but its still here and even though because of my own negligence it's held together with duct tape i think it's going to last at least another 5 years

    I've just reached the point of "too many things going wrong with it" on my 2011 Macbook Pro, and I kind of want a bigger screen. Thought about going to a similar-vintage 15" MBP, but just didn't find anything at a price competitive to comparably equipped Thinkpads. I've always loved Thinkpads for their durability and their matchless keyboards. So it's back to the black slab for me. :) Just plunked down the cash for a T590, which should show up Monday. Spent a hair over $500US and got an I7, 16GB RAM, 15" display, gobs of USB ports, an ethernet jack, and a 2TB SSD to swap in for the 512 that came with it. The 512 can go into my chromebook. :D

    • @mrz80
      @mrz80 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rpalacios4215 It's an i7-8665U. 1.9-4.8GHz, 4 cores, hyperthreaded. 's plenty fast enough for my music production purposes. As for the 2TB, I mirror my home workstation, with my massive accumulations of every photo I've ever taken since 2004 (or earlier, counting all the ones I've scanned :) ) , all the music I own, and a lot of accumulated videos. I can burn thru disk space in a ferocious hurry if I don't keep cleaning up after myself. For the traditional Thinkpad virtues (durability, great keyboard, gorgeous display) with a larger display, longer battery life, and lighter weight than the Macbook Pro it replaced, I think $500's reasonable. That was 4-1/4 for the machine, and about another 80 for the 2TB drive. And recall, it's a T590, which is newer and has a larger screen than the T480 in the vid.

And the best thing about upgrading the display panel isnt because of better colours and viewing angles. But because the replacement part is damn cheap at £30-40.

    I considered the T480 too.. Went with a Latitude 7490/7400 instead. The Lenovo is build sturdier for sure and has more "upgrades" available too. But as a overal home laptop (paperwork, youtube, mailing, simple games) it's perfect to me. The spec is similar to a 480 (when you leave out the 1440P upgrade route) apart from the external battery.
    Overal I think it is a great alternative, easy acces to parts. DC-Jack is a plug-and-play replacement and it has TB3 with charging too. The 480 only has the latter, so if that breaks you are screwed... The battery is larger on the 480 but I rather have a lightweight machine and a 20k mAh batterypack in with me for times I need to.

The Battery kina sucks thought, but I got it in mint condition so I can't complain alot.
      Either way, from what I can tell the latitud is pretty much a downgrade vs the t480 by looking at its processor, dunno why you would go for it when I happened to rum the same horsepower before and it couldnt even movies at 4k/2k.

    It's a shame company's don't make sturdier, harder laptops anymore and instead go for the slender feel. Hp used to have great lapyopsy before, nowadays it feels like it's one 1hp. I wish they would take a step back and make laptops like the used to, it might boost their sales a lot.

    This was an interesting video, to compare it to my E585 in upgradeability.
    It's build quality is worse and lacks the additional battery.
    Instead of a modem slot (it does have a replaceable WiFi + Bluetooth card) it has an NVMe M.2 SSD slot on the motherboard.
    The second drive being a SATA one, with the option for an M.2 sled that I don't have nor need.
    So it's good to know that I'm not missing out on much, as the processor in my machine is rather decent.
    I've upgraded it's RAM, added a second drive and did some minor repairs to the chassis, so I'm very familiar with it's insides.

    I got one for 180 EUR with like 80 cycles on batteries and i5 8250u, 8GB, 256 nvme (7 months ago). I sold some of the parts for like 40 EUR.
    Now I have it with Chicony Keyboard backlit, 1080p, 400nits display, 16GB RAM, and a new palmrest. I am Running solo Debian 12 Stable. Using it for research, taking care of my stuff, multimedia. The display is gorgeous and the small batteries hold like 5 Hours of usage.
    Windows 11 was working nice but I decided to not dual boot anymore. Is not that strong but on KDE Debian works very nice for normal stuff.
    I wanted it just for portably at a final price of 300 EUR after upgrades. For heavy stuff I use my desktop.

    Should I get a T480 used second-hand with 24GB ram and 1TB for 500$ or get a new IdeaPad for 700$ with i5-1135g7 16GB ram and 1TB SSD ?

    • @one_step_sideways
      @one_step_sideways 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's too expensive for a T480. Find one that costs $200-250 and has either 8GB RAM or no RAM at all. And buy two 16GB RAM sticks (you only need them to be 2400MHz, no need to overpay for 3200MHz) and a good SSD. Then you'll get your money's worth. You can also find 72Wh batteries for it for like $40.
      IdeaPads are cheap, less reliable and have worse build quality and keyboard. You also can't really use them in the cold, with gloves on (you can use your T480 literally anywhere, even in the cold in winter). The T480 is sturdy and will probably also survive being dropped, but I wouldn't recommend you try it at home.

      Yes, but it's not really recommended. You should get a laptop with a faster CPU and a Thunderbolt 4 (not Thunderbolt 3).

    I bought a couple for $225 each that have an i5 and 16gb of ram with a 1080p display (no touch) and a 250GB drive. Not sure if NVME of Sata3 yet.
    I'm aware of the thunderbolt firmware issue so I gotta check them as soon as i get it but i did get them from a newegg selling on ebay as "refurbished" so I"m hoping they patched the firmware before point of sale.

      @@Hardwaremoney They ended up being NVME but one of the laptops had a defective battery so I ended up replacing it with a 6 cell 72ma battery over the stock 24ma. The laptops I ended up giving to some people who wanted a cheap laptop that was reliable with good specs and they've been very happy with them no complaints.

    it's ok, sturdy, 2 x DDR4 ram slots, best of it's kind in 2018 and still holds up well 5 years later, but battery life is OVERrated even with the large removable battery, it lasts for about 4-5 hours ... not 24 hours like how some people claimed online

    What do you mean by LTE connectivity on this part th-cam.com/video/O0X3m0rs8EE/w-d-xo.html? Can you explain it further? Thanks

    • @Hardwaremoney
      @Hardwaremoney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      for LTE network, all you need are a data plan and a mobile device to connect to your service provider's network. unlike WiFi where a router is needed to access the internet through your laptop, smartphone or any other device. sorry for the late reply

    Would it be good for college ? Getting a i7-8650 16GB and 500GB SSD for €450 or would something be better for that price range ?

      T480s is a bad idea because of no external batteries. Buy only the T480, it's more upgradable and there are more mods for it. And you don't need to overspend on the i7-8650U because there's little performance improvement, since both i5-8350U and i7-8650U are 4-core CPUs. Get an Intel i5-8350U model for cheap with a 16GB RAM stick (there should be 1x16GB instead of 2x8GB sticks installed for easier upgradability later down the road) and improve the efficiency of the processor to be on par with the i7-8550U by undervolting the CPU using Throttlestop.

      @@one_step_sideways Thanks for leaving these tips here
      I don't know about undervolting a CPU. Are you sure that this won't cause any issues down the road?
      I may purchase this laptop soon and I want it to be as stable as possible because it is meant for university.

      @@mianashhad9802 I'm certain. It's only going to actually prolong its lifespan. The only issues you may have is if you undervolt it too hard. It's just a matter of raising the voltage up to the last successful step.
      For instance, I decreased voltage in -25mV ranges starting from -50mV. At -125mV it froze during the stress test to test the stability, so I increased it to -100mV and it was stable again.
