From what I heard, you can upgrade the T480 up to 64 GB of RAM, 32 was listed at the time of release of the laptop because 32 GB modules weren't available yet
@@AsphaltracergamerI'm not sure, I haven't tried. The product specifications don't list there being a difference in capacity psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_T480/ThinkPad_T480_Spec.PDF
My brother in Christ, what would you possibly do with 64 GB ram on this laptop? The CPU will be the main bottleneck, so you would never be able to take advantage of all that RAM. you might as well throw your money into the sea.
When I got my T480, it was pretty high end, with the only expectation being the lack of Nvidia graphics. It has an i7-8650U, 32GB RAM, and 512GB NVME SSD out of the box. It also had a IPS touch screen but I upgraded to a very bright and higher quality non-touch display. The T480's design and internal construction is nice. I replaced my T480 with a brand new palmrest which required taking the entire laptop apart. It was very easy to get down to the motherboard and chassis compared to the older "classic" ThinkPads. I also replaced my display panel and I rebuilt the entire display assembly (which includes the WiFi antennas, the webcam, and the LED light for the "i" in ThinkPad. However, the plastic clips that are used on the base cover (rear cover) also tend to break off, even when using plastic tools and brand new parts. For example I also did replace the base cover, but as soon as I removed it again it instantly broke a clip. So I think the build quality on these newer ThinkPads is not as good as it used to be. I guess that's just because it's designed to be very thin, and it is nice and small for the features it packs.
I agree about the clips. The T480s build quality is improved and the clips are much stronger, making it easy to access internals without worry. I am daily driving a T480s with NVIDIA MX150, i7-8350U, 40GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD. It's solid for what I use it for. 40GB RAM is novelty, I definitely don't use that much. If the dedicated graphics were strong I would go further and modify more, but I am thinking about switching over to a P51 ThinkPad that I also have in stock.
I never broke the clips off weird enough coming from a newbie. I was trying to open my laptop to check the ram and the process was way too easy. I just unscrew and unclip the battery area and after that it immediately opens up.
i was about to buying i5 model ,but some people pointed me to end letter of the CPU generation, told me it wasn't worth buying intel U series cpu laptop. so i give up buying one.
This also comes with a Gen8 Intel so it have official support for Windows 11, the oldest T series that does. we have around 300 of them at work and they are doing a fine job.
this laptop comes with nvidia graphic card variant, but it's a rare one i think i suggest you use some fps games for testing, since some competitive title like valorant, csgo, war thunder, etc still able to run on integrated graphic with lowest-low setting on 720-768p resolution but you still could add gta v and minecraft as a niche game to test still, a good and informative video on an old but gold thinkpad t480 Nice 👍
Thanks! I agree with you, but there is only so much time in the day. I will be making a T480s video soon, so I can test out GTA V on integrated graphics. I actually have my own personal T480s with NVIDIA MX150 (2GB GDDR5) dedicated GPU that I will be making a video on as well. I have an external SSD with Steam, so that is my go to. As for Valorant, FortNite, etc - those are titles I have to download each time I want to test on a new system. Along with their launch software (Epic Games, Riot). So, it becomes a bit of a process as they do not seem to take well to being loaded on to an external SSD and moved from system to system. This is where Steam gains some heavy favor from me.
I have the T480s which I bought new and will keep using it until it dies since I think it's one of the last Lenovos with a truly great keyboard. I've purchased, and returned, more recent Thinkpads, including the Carbon and Nano, as well as the T14s series, which replaced the T4xxs series, and none of them had a keyboard that was nearly as good. Mine has the dedicated nvedia graphics, 24gb RAM, intel i5 8350u cpu and 1tb SSD, so it should last me for some time still for what I use it for. Great video, thanks.
Is it possible to switch off Nvidia Graphics in "On Battery" mode? How many hours on battery can it last while doing word/excel workload + browsing the internet?
@@HaisteComputerRepair I believe mine is the i5 variation, only 256 gb and 8gb RAM, but I'll be getting at least 1TB for the NVME and 32gb RAM when I can find them a bit cheaper. Possibly even upgrading the screen, though mine is the 1920 x 1080, so it's good enough. I plan on also "modding" it with a dual heatsink since it seems to get decently hot (70° - 95°) with just light gaming. I did replace thermal paste but it's still pretty warm. I've seen mini heatsink mods on the pipes as well, but it might only drop a few degrees so it's not really worth it. Dual pipes on the fan should cool it down quite a bit.
It depends. If it comes to you used, it might be a good idea to clean it up and repaste. If you bought it new and there are no signs of overheating, then you might be fine.
Hello, thank you for your nice video. Do you think this laptop is good enough for software development? I will have several Docker containers running (maybe 9 containers) and also be running an Android emulator for mobile development. Do you think the i7 Intel variant will be enough?

But it may help to reach out to the developer community as I am a hardware/light IT guy. Maybe get that RAM upgraded as well. If you can score an i7 version for a fair price with a 1080p panel, that's great.

I own this laptop and I'd like to buy the eGPU TB3 1050 from Lenovo. What do you think about the combo T480 + TB3 1050 4GB GDDR5 for light games (Outlast, Fallout New Vegas, Max Payne 3), Photoshop and Autodesk Inventor?
I actually had no idea that existed until now. That's awesome. You could play those games with that GPU, for sure. I'm going to look for a review of this unit.
@@fernando29579Did you find one for a decent price? It would be entirely novelty for me. The GTX 1050 is not great in 2023 to begin with, but again for the games you listed it would be nice. Despite it's limitations it's probably much cheaper than using something like the Razer egpu: www.razer.com/ca-en/gaming-egpus/razer-core-x
Well, that's only one piece of the puzzle that is CPU generations. A Pentium 4 had 3.8GHz clock speeds, but that of course would not at all compare to an i5-10400 with a base speed of 2.9GHz. The T480 will have the benefit of 4 cores 8 threads, while the 6th gen i3 will be 2 core 4 thread. Also, sometimes business class laptops are about efficiency, low or no fan noise, and long battery life. The intent is not always to have the beefiest hardware, just functional for it's purpose.
Just curious but in the t480s what processor would you recommend getting it in? I’ve heard that there’s not much performance gain going from the i5-8350u to the i7-8650u unless you undervolt? Would you be better off just getting the i5 instead of the i7?
It really depends on what you plan to use it for. There is an increase in clock speed and cache, but that could be negligible compared to the price difference (theoretically). Perhaps there is slightly more battery life to be had with the i5, but this is not confirmed with me. I daily drive a T480s with an i7-8650U with the dedicated MX150 NVIDIA GPU and it performs well. For what I generally use it for, I would also be fine with an i5 and integrated CPU graphics.
@@HaisteComputerRepair I’m looking at getting it for college, I’m still unsure of what exactly I’m wanting to study but I’m thinking electrical engineering so I wasn’t for sure if the i7 or i5 would be better. I’ve had a hard time finding one with the MX150 so i would probably be using the integrated graphics if that would run programs like autocad and matlab
T480 will have the benefit of a 4 core, 8 thread i5 and i7 CPU option. T470 will have 2 core 4 thread i5 and i7 CPU option. Otherwise they are very similar with display panel, RAM, integrated graphics.
I would not expect to play those games at all. Those games could run on a laptop with dedicated NVIDIA Quadro mobile GPU with at least 4GB VRAM or a laptop more geared towards gaming.
@@HaisteComputerRepair No, the internet is completely fine; I use an Ethernet cable. Also, my former laptop, which has an i3 10th generation and 4GB of RAM, performs far better.
@@casieclicks2773 I am not sure, perhaps there is something to do with your Windows install or web browser. Is Roblox the only thing you are having problems with? I don't play Roblox, but I work in education and kids are able to play it with relative ease on older hardware.
У меня Т480s, для игр он мало подходит. А вот для учебы - самое то, он легкий и довольно хорошо работает. Брал его подержанным за 32.000 российских рублей (280-290$)
Definitely an office laptop, I agree. The enthusiast in me will always try games out to see what the system can handle. Think of it as a form of "benchmarking" it to see what it's limitations are.
Not unless there are external factors such as smoking cigarettes around the laptop or being negligent with cleaning and maintenance. Or if you get angry when you lose a match and throw the laptop across the room.
I didn't really test thermals before applying new thermal paste. It's just common practice when I am servicing laptops that have the original paste. Thermals did not reach 90 Celsius at all for me, so perhaps you should look at cleaning out the fan and applying new thermal paste.
@@splashboi898Agreed, but people are limited to tight budgets and you can make do with a system like this if you have to. I can verify this as I have tested these titles on this laptop. Not the best, of course, but if someone needs to game on a ThinkPad without dedicated graphics that's their reality!
The i7 is only 6% on average better than the I-5 It's completely negligible so if you want to save money get the I-5 you won't notice the difference even if you had them side by side.
I have a T480 version i5-8350u, 620 UHD, 8/256, is it possible to play GTA 5 roleplay? Is it smooth, I don't really focus on the graphics as long as it runs smoothly
Well, I would compare the price as performance will be similar. Check what it comes with: SSD type and capacity, RAM capacity, and display panel. Or backlit keyboard etc. T480s is a little more slim and has different case material. I am typing this on a T480s. Feel free to share links with me or tell me what you are looking at if you want a second opinion.
@@alxcastro95 Haha gotcha. Well, the Transcend SSD is SATA III not NVMe. What brand did you use? Did you go into BIOS and make sure it's included in boot order? Also, check that the WWAN port is Enabled in BIOS under the Security tab and in the Input/output section.
@@alxcastro95 I/O Port Access under the Security tab in BIOS>Wireless WAN>Enabled. Then go check the boot order and make sure it's recognized. Maybe try a reset between the two and don't forget to save the changes. Let me know if it works out.
Well, if the battery is in good condition it will last a while. With used batteries, it's hard to say without testing it out. It shouldn't get hot though. The CPU will warm up, that's to the left of the CPU fan with the laptop facing up.
@@adyt2775Both of those questions can only really be answered by a seller and yourself. Used battery quality is dependent on past use and other factors out of your control. Perhaps it was luck, perhaps it was weather! Maybe check to see if your fan is too dusty or thermal paste dried up.

I still dont understand why the CPU clock speed is so low at 1.7ghz. My 4gb Ram, 6th Gen Core i3 Dell Laptop has higher clock speed.
Can you use it with an external graphics card?
Yes, there are ways to do that using the usb type c thunderbolt port.
@@HaisteComputerRepair thank you, can I pair am AMD card with the Intel? I'm really new to this
Just curious but in the t480s what processor would you recommend getting it in?
Can you run fifa smoothly on it?
Honestly surprised it even runs games on uhd graphics.
Low end gaming is a thing!
Ola, estou na dúvida para comprar entre t480 e t470, qual recomendaria relação velocidade??
T480 will have the benefit of a 4 core, 8 thread i5 and i7 CPU option. T470 will have 2 core 4 thread i5 and i7 CPU option. Otherwise they are very similar with display panel, RAM, integrated graphics.

Not unless there are external factors such as smoking cigarettes around the laptop or being negligent with cleaning and maintenance. Or if you get angry when you lose a match and throw the laptop across the room.
Did you see an improvement in temps by redoing thermal paste? Mine hits 90c if I do any sustained load
I didn't really test thermals before applying new thermal paste. It's just common practice when I am servicing laptops that have the original paste. Thermals did not reach 90 Celsius at all for me, so perhaps you should look at cleaning out the fan and applying new thermal paste.
