It is an absolutely wonderful piece. I love layering, whether it is paper or paint. As you said, it is important to be aware of what you're drawn to. Layering in a painting is crucial to gain the depth of what I'm after. It's like life and people. There is so much more to all of us than what we see. I just had an epiphany about my artwork. Wow!!! Thank you for sharing this video.
Love that and yes, it IS just like life and people!! It’s nice to make that correlation between what we love in life and what we love in our work. It makes it so much more meaningful.
I know, that’s one of the hardest things for me too. Covering over things and taking that risk is something that is good to practice-it’s like strengthening a muscle
I have discovered this way of layering translucent papers and paint recently; and your work looks very similar! Love the painterly effect that overlapping creates!
Absolutely stunning, Marabeth! You have made a seamless transition to the larger canvases. Congratulations! The production of your videos keep getting better as well.
A beautiful piece of work. I love glazing medium. It really does give a depth and jewel like finish. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes from Cornwall, UK.
Hi Marabeth!! So good to see you again!! What an unusual and beautiful piece! I am going to go back and watch again! Always learn so much from you! "Multidimensional." Perfect word for what is achieved by layering and not stopping before it's done! Thank You so much! Always mesmerized!! ~❤~
It is truly beautiful and such a delight to watch your process. And so many helpful tips and tricks, too. Grateful! I'm still developing my style. I love love, love collage, and mixed media using most mediums, too. Thanks for sharing ✨️
THANKS FOR SHARING. So enjoy watching your videos. I especially like the commission one you did for the mother who had passed with the poetry included. Hope I can accomplish that ethereal feel in my work. Any advice would be helpful.
Thank you for this video. This painting is just fabulous... i am curuous what tissue paper youve used?? Ive so enjoyed that youve continued with your layering until you came to where you found it was complete. Thank you for your reply.
I’m happy you enjoyed it! I have replaced my use of tissue paper with medical exam paper. It has a lot of the same qualities but comes on rolls and has a few qualities that I like a lot better. It’s listed here in my favorite art supplies: www.marabethquinart.com/favorite-art-products
Wonderful work. You talk about the paints and mark makers, but never about the "type" of paper you are using. Could you please tell us about the paper. Thank you in advance.
5:28 This could have gone in a beautiful fishy direction here. I can see multiple fish developing that would have created a gorgeous colourful water scene 🤔 A goldfish up the top right, a beautiful purple Betta fish on the LHS middle & a less obvious fish on the lower right, with even a turtle head poking in from the RHS there
Do you mean the ‘Why so Sensitive?” Webinar? I do think I will make it available again soon, but I’m backed up on projects and can’t get to it for a couple months probably…I’ll let you know!
Great work! 😍 Are all the collage papers made with watercolour? How does the watercolour stick on the glazing liquid when you paint over the collage pieces with watercolour?
The papers are tinted with acrylic, then botanical figures are painted with either acrylic or watercolor, depending. The glazing liquid doesn’t seem to deter the watercolor from adhering to the surface, so when I’m done, I spray varnish to lock it in place and then brush varnish it.
6:51 And now I can see intricate faces on either side - one on the RHS that’s lighter & more colourful, one on the left that’s darker & more shadowed. Interesting. I wonder if your stages where you felt you could have stopped coincided with those different directions your painting could have taken 🤔
Hi Kristina! I have a studio in my home, but if you’d like to see something in particular, just email me at marabeth@marabethquinart.com and we can arrange something 😊
It blows my mind how many artists on TH-cam are left handed :)
I know, I've noticed that a lot of people in creative fields are lefties.
I've noticed that too, because I'm also lefty. Left hand = right side of the brain...

I do love the way your colours glow in the end. Layering adds so much to creations.
Thank you, and I agree about layering!
Love that you took a reading of the dark and light areas. Another piece of gorgeous art!
Thank you Jill!! Xoxo
One of the obstacles I find with layering even more is the fear of ruining what I have created…..you are so brave…inspiring.
I know, that’s one of the hardest things for me too. Covering over things and taking that risk is something that is good to practice-it’s like strengthening a muscle
I love the colors of this painting. The texture you lay is just perfect for such delicate colors. I am going to try this one! Thank You. Maria
Have fun! I love this palette too-very autumn!
I have discovered this way of layering translucent papers and paint recently; and your work looks very similar! Love the painterly effect that overlapping creates!
I do too-I’m totally engrossed in the layering
Absolutely stunning, Marabeth! You have made a seamless transition to the larger canvases. Congratulations! The production of your videos keep getting better as well.
Thank you so much! 😘
love learning from your explanation of your process and how you troubleshoot - great video
Thanks for watching, Yesmean!

I am mesmerized by your process! I just signed up for your Layered Botanical class. Can't wait to start!
I saw that, Sheila-welcome to the class!

You are so welcome! I’m glad you find it helpful-and I feel like I’ll always be developing my style 😊
Appreciate the way you explained your process. And thank you for the iPad pic suggestion to experiment and assess your work at this stage.
My pleasure! Glad it was helpful!
I also fear of ruining what I have created. You have inspired me. Thank you for this video.
So happy it was helpful, Nancy!
What a beautiful piece ❤❤❤ thank you for sharing your process with us - I love your class and now I just want to jump in and do it again. ❤❤❤
So happy you’re enjoying it! And thanks for the kind words.
Riveting! I always enjoy watching the elements come together. 💜💜💜
I do too, and sometimes I wonder if they ever will come together 😆
THANKS FOR SHARING. So enjoy watching your videos. I especially like the commission one you did for the mother who had passed with the poetry included. Hope I can accomplish that ethereal feel in my work. Any advice would be helpful.
My only advice is just keep working with it, even when you don’t like where you’re at. Practice is almost always my first tactic…
Beautiful video, thank you for sharing your process
My pleasure! Thanks for watching 😊
Another beautiful work of art, Marabeth. Delightful colours and composition....
Thanks so much, Linda!
LOVE LOVE LOVE THE LAYERS❤❤❤
I love layers too!
Stunning! And I experience the same thing myself - it's done - but it's not. Pushing forward can really take us to new exciting places! ♥♥♥
it’s always good to hear other artists say that they experience it too-I keep waiting to grow out of it, but I don’t think that’s going to happen 😆
Exquisite. I so love the process!
I’m so glad to hear it, and thank you!
Beautiful.
Thank you! And thanks for watching 😊
Beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Your pieces are beautiful!
Thanks so much Diane! I appreciate you watching
Mara Beth what are you using to adhere the tissue paper to the canvas? Gel medium? Absolutely love this one 💚
Thank you Donna! I use Golden Satin Glazing Liquid but any acrylic medium will do
Love your work! ~Terri from Athens, Alabama 😊
Hi Terri! Good to see you here 🤗
What are you using as your glue medium? This is absolutely beautiful
Golden Satin Glazing Liquid-I use it as glue and also to make acrylic glazes. It’s fantastic.
Thank you for this video. This painting is just fabulous... i am curuous what tissue paper youve used?? Ive so enjoyed that youve continued with your layering until you came to where you found it was complete. Thank you for your reply.

That would be cool!
I just found this video in September. Was your Webinar taped? If yes, is it possible to watch the tape? If not, will you be doing another Webinar?
Do you mean the ‘Why so Sensitive?” Webinar? I do think I will make it available again soon, but I’m backed up on projects and can’t get to it for a couple months probably…I’ll let you know!
Fantastic video! May I ask how you seal this once you are finished? With a brush or spray?
I spray water-soluble marks to quickly set and when dry, I brush on Liquitex satin varnish
Wonderful!
Many thanks!

Awesome! Love that
