One disappointment, no mention of Lu Ten's mom? Did Iroh just have him out of thin air? Another nip pick, his letter to Zuko from the spirit world, could have mentioned Izumi. You would think they had a close relationship, Iroh probably wasn't alive when Zuko's grand children were born, so I give him a pass on not mentioning them.

The only problem I have with the Azulon and Sozin picture is that Sozin is way to young for Azulon to have been born yet because we know Azulon was indeed born 0 AG and the last image we see of Sozin he was 70 years old and had all white hair and Azulon wouldn't be born for another 12 years after that point

It's a bit weird the Fire Nation Capital never got a name, unlike Ba Sing Se.

This was definitely a very fun book and the artwork was just fantastic. (The letter from seven-year-old Zuko was just so cute, and even the short letter from Toph was awesome.) Great review, it's nice to hear some aspects of the book focused on I didn't pick up on and critiques were definitely fair. (I was also a bit disappointed by the letters from the gaang and the section that just seemed to be recapping the show rather than bringing us something new.) The picture of older Kiyi really stood out as something cool and interesting, it will be interesting to see who she becomes as she gets older, I hope her character gets more focus later.

I actually did place an order for this book after your non spoiler review, so I'm excited for it to arrive after watching this.
I pretty much agree with all of your critiques in that I'd like to someday get more of who Lu Ten was as a character and his personality, and, yeah, more on the Fire Nation family.
"Living through your relationship with Mai" is a super weird line. The phrasing of it makes it sound like, eventually, the relationship ended and didn't resume, so is it saying they don't get back together? Seems a bit too big of a reveal for this book. It's also interesting in that, in terms of what we've seen from the show and the comics, Iroh isn't really shown to offer any advice or input on Zuko and Mai's relationship. Obviously when they're first a couple, he's in prison so he doesn't have much involvement there. Then again in the comics we don't really hear much from Iroh on Zuko's romantic life during the breakup period. That basically leaves that year time skip period that we don't know much about, which I suppose is what the book might be referencing, but strange nonetheless. With a book like this it is pretty blatant how much weaving and dodging has to be done around Mai when it comes to Zuko because they can't spoil the comics. Given how long ago Smoke and Shadow ended it does start to feel like, is it really such a mindblowing spoiler if you just say Mai is Izumi's mother?
I any case, I like the writing overall, especially the humour. Why do I feel like Toph would have insisted that Iroh mention that Zuko never went on a field trip with her, haha. Still bitter.

I really don't think that the one mention of Mai really means anything. I don't see it as being anything for or against their relationship being endgame. I think it just highlights that they didn't know what to do with this book in terms of referencing her in that this book given the timing SHOULD absolutely include a mention to whoever Izumi's mother is, but since it for some reason remains a mystery they couldn't say anything.
I just hope that the next ATLA comic can finally return to those plot points and at last confirm Mai and Zuko's relationship again. Because if they do get back together I am taking it as that being sorted after what they did in Smoke and Shadow.

@@AirspeedPrime Yeah, I agree. Because it's been so long since Smoke and Shadow, I honestly would be fine with a "Oh yeah, we're back together" in passing at this point. Usually I'd prefer something more in depth, but the wait between fifth and sixth ATLA trilogies has made it feel more dragged out than it actually is in-universe (and even that timeline passage can be hard to pin down).

@@AirspeedPrime It is confusing because at the end of Smoke and Shadow, Mai is seen breaking up with Kei Lo (and her devotion to Zuko throughout the comic was very interesting, especially the part where Ty Lee says "there are other ways to protect your ex-boyfriend than selling your soul").
Additionally it is said that Gene Luen Yang implied Maiko gets back together after Smoke and Shadow.
Also, Izumi's chin--- Mai's chin... Michi...Maiko must be endgame

So I'm missing the middle Zuko letter (the glue sucks for the letters and all fall out now). I didn't realize the last letter was folded and I used a flashlight to read it through the paper like a fire code hidden and you need light/heat to reveal (I feel dumb now lol). Great book though. Really love this stuff. Great review.

Where did zuko get his dragon is it the dragons that gabe him his fire bending?

    • @AirspeedPrime
      @AirspeedPrime  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Right now we have no official answer, just speculation.
The common theory is that Druk hatched from the Sun Warrior artifact that Zuko and Aang came across in 313. Zuko touched it and said it felt alive so it likely is a dragon egg. Now we know he didn't take the egg with him so it is a story we have yet to see of him potentially going back to the Sun Warriors and seeing the egg hatch. The egg could be Ran and Shaw's egg, but again we don't know, we don't even know which dragon is which for sure.
There are other options, but this has the most set up from other stuff. Otherwise they would have to find a whole other way for Zuko to encounter a new dragon or get an egg from somewhere else.
