    Girl, Mai broke up with Zuko in The Promise lol. There was a whole scene 😅
    Basically, Zuko went off to the colonies and didn’t say anything to her. He kept keeping secrets from her and she was hurt that he didn’t trust her. Suki is the one who told her that he left, and she apologized to Zuko because she didn’t expect the breakup.

      @janeb3483 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Thank for this comment! At the end of the Promise (spoilers for that!) Aang says that they are not a fan club anymore, but air acolytes. And I agree, they are important in the comics and for Aang's journey and for Korra. Think of Tenzin's wife, she is not an airbender but an acolyte.

  • @hardstylepikachu
    @hardstylepikachu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +86

    The fan club is really important to Aang; I wish you felt differently. They’re the beginning of the Air Acolytes and without them it would’ve been nearly impossible to retain Air Nomad culture and help restore all of the Air Temples. Plus they’re pretty integral to Tenzin meeting Pema and season 3 of Korra.
    Mai and Zuko broke up in The Promise, there was a whole scene with them in the throne room and also later when Suki tells Zuko she’s sorry to hear they broke up.

    I love that you appreciate Mai so much! She is such an underrated character, and I can relate so much to her struggle. She’s had her heart broken twice by a boy she probably once trusted with her deepest insecurities and darkest secrets...only to find out that he’s been keeping secrets from her, of all people.
    Not only that, Mai’s own damn father is essentially planning to use her as bait to draw said boy out into the open so he can attack him, and then witnesses strange figures kidnap her little brother in the dead of night...again finding out that her ex best friend is the one who captured him, and her father was working with them in the first place.
    Mai is justified in her attempts to move on, because who would want to go crawling back to someone who didn’t trust you enough to tell you their secrets. I certainly wouldn’t.
    Even when she had every right to be furious at her father for putting her up to this, she still chooses to forgive him and aims to do right by her little brother and those around her.
    Anyone else who thinks otherwise, fight me.

    I really love this video and your analyses of the comics. I agree that Zuko is an amazing character (one of the top 100 in fiction, probably). Iroh, too.
    I feel like The Search is the best comic by a pretty big margin. I think it’s because that was the one they really wanted to make. From what I’ve found from research, the creators went to Nickelodeon wanting to make a 90-minute special where Team Avatar finds Zuko’s mom. Nickelodeon, presumably out of a desire to make money, told them to make Korra instead. Then Nickelodeon kept changing the episode count and details, basically ensuring there was no way Korra would end up being a show comparable (in quality) to The Last Airbender. I might have some of the details wrong, but that seems to be the consensus of what happened.

    "IS EVERYBODY DEAD?! No, because TOPH IS AMAZING!" I laughed out loud.
    Also, you have Aaron Ehasz to thank for the lack of love triangles in the original series. When Toph was a boy he and Katara were supposed to have a flirty-flirt thing going on that made Aang jealous and it sounds like it was supposed to be really stupid. But Aaron was like, "Hey, Toph's more interesting if they have the same personality but that she's a tiny girl rather than a buff dude." I think they still considered an Aang-Katara-Toph triangle but dropped it, thank god.

    Another Avatar video, my day just go better! And if someone's curious or uncomfortable about Toph and Satoru: Toph is 14-15 in The Rift and Satoru is definitely a teenager - we don't get a specific age, but he is dependant on his uncle, he is not on his own, definitely not a grown-up, I would say 16-17. If you look at the design of him and Zuko in the animated series - I think they look pretty much the same age.

    Yo it's pretty cool to see that other people read these. These really help scratch that extra avatar itch. The only thing I can't get into was the bending art seems really cheap compared to other action graphic novels and I personally don't like that they made zuko go through being irrational because of fear. It didn't connect with me that this is the same zuko that matured through the series; uncle iroh would be very sad to see zuko lost his way.... again. It was cool to see izula to play mind games on our scarred boy to try to give him more character development, but it felt like it just made zuko look the weakest of the avatar gang.

    As far as Zuko and Mai breaking up I think it has to do with the tension we saw between them in The Promise. She even comments to him about how he loves his secrets more than her

    About Toph's age, she's around 15 at this time. Around the end of Avatar, she was 13, the Promise takes place an year after that, and the Search and the Rift one year after that, so 13 + 1 + 1 = 15 years. I guess that makes Toph and Saturo less comfortable...but still meh..

    i liked the rift more because of how expertly it explores the theme of tradition vs progress making aang and toph stand for each of these respectively which was in perfect alignment with their character arcs. because of course it makes so much sense that aang would be trying to honor tradition, otherwise his culture will die out. and of course it makes sense that toph would be against any kind of tradition because in the past she was hurt by people who blindly follow it. and their conflict is mirrored in the flashbacks of the spirit's story and it's interesting that the spirit who stands for tradition is framed as being wrong (although aang and toph reconcile). it probably isn't my favorite of the avatar graphic novels but i think it's the best structured one. also at some point the spirit says something along the lines of "whenever there's a rift between the human world and the spirit world, the avatar will always side with the humans" - which is 1) a very clever reflection on how the avatar allegedly is the bridge between those two worlds and is supposed to bring harmony whereas their version of harmony is always the one which benefits humans 2) the coolest title drop i've ever seen. also toph vs her dad hit me right in my own daddy issues.
    smoke and shadow however i liked the least (still haven't read imbalance though). maybe it's because i don't care for mai, her love triangle and her brother, but more likely it's bcs azula's grand plan to undermine zuko's rule is kinda ridiculous. and generally i don't understand where the writers are going with her character. is she also going to get a redemption arc? are they developing the plot about her madness? i don't know what's happening here
    btw i vaguely remember that there's a scene either in this one or in the promise where mai accuses zuko of not telling her what's troubling him and she thinks that he isn't taking her seriously as his partner so she breaks up with him

    I feel. like I'm the only one who absolutely hated Toph in The Rift. While I loved more acknowledgement of her childhood trauma, she doesn't get a pass for being an absolute dick to Aang when he wanted to revive some of his cultural traditions. I guess wanting to keep some core part of you alive despite the rest of your people falling to genocide is out of line? Toph doesn't get a pass for treating Aang like that (neither does Sokka either tbh). And it really bothered me that Toph wasn't ever properly called out on that.

    • @jordancampbell8597
      @jordancampbell8597 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is way late, but it's important to keep in mind that Aang doesn't actually know a thing about this holiday. He always neglected hearing the story of why they celebrated, so he could fly kites with Tenzin.
      In other words, very little of the culture would be passed on.
      For want of a better comparison, this is the equivalent of a kid demanding to celebrate an Easter Egg Hunt, without any knowledge of why Easter was being celebrated in the first place.

      @lauraburnham7461 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jordancampbell8597 sorry, but no. the only thing he doesn't know is the why. he knows all the traditions and customs around it, and he has fond memories of celebrating. why should he have to give it up simply because he doesn't know the origins? aang gives up a lot. he sacrifices a lot, and he wanted to share something from his past with the people he loved because it makes him feel closer to those who lost. toph needed to check her elf and just be supportive of her friend.

    I recently got part one and two of “The Promise” from my library but wanted to read more. I just did a google search and found that certain channels on TH-cam have the full stories. The only annoying thing is the voices are definitely not accurate to the characters but what can you expect I guess. 🤷‍♀️

    As a big fan of Azula's character, Smoke and Shadow was a MASSIVE disappointment. Her goals/motivations/conflicts established in the series are basically ignored, and Azula herself is little more than a Scooby Doo villain!
    *Fred pulls off the mask* "GASP! It was Azula all along!" Forget all her complexities, now she's just a plot device! It's absolutely sad how much the writers for these comics misunderstand Azula's character. 1/5 Would not recommend.

    Merphy, in the Promise, Mai broke up with Zuko because she learned from Suki that he was secretly meeting with Ozai. She hated that he kept secrets from her again, so she ended the relationship. Zuko even ordered her to come back, but she would not have it. The context was all there.

    I honestly hated Smoke and Shadow. Azula's motivations made very little sense to me and the entire plan seemed really contrived and over complicated. The whole plot was hard to believe.

    That factory guy Toph has a crush on is thought to be one of the fathers of one of her daughters.(Legend of Korra) Lin Beifong's father, is most likely. I did think he was strikingly similar to her. There is a theory too that Sokka might be the father of her younger daughter (SPOILER) since the creators confirmed that Suki died young. Idk for sure though.

Notice how in that panel Ozai is not drawn with prison bars in front of him but once she "sees" him we are at a panel with the whole cell is visible. • @naniyodesu

    Zuko and Mai breaking up was not ambiguous or behind the scenes at all, it happened very clearly in the first comic.
    She left him because he wouldn't confide in her at all even when she saw he was having a hard time, had already confronted him about it and he'd promised not to do it again. She felt that Zuko shut her out and hid things from her so she left him. The break up happens near the end of part 2 of The Promise.
    To me this actually also just highlights the gravity of Zuko immediately confiding in Aang in The Search about the letter. In The Promise he wouldn't open up to anyone, not even Mai or Iroh, but in The Search we see him doing just that with Aang, which really shows how much he clearly trusts and respects Aang, and how close they are.

    To everyone who can't afford the big collectors' edition (that's what I call them anyways 🤔) of the comics......most of them (if not all of them) come out in smaller forms....all of them are trilogy's (except for the 'Lost Adventures' as far as I know) and can be bought separated rather in the big compiled versions that Merphy has. They may still be a bit hard to find (not entirely sure) but if you do they would be cheaper. I hope this helps and I hope you all get to read them 😁
