Problem with the badminton umpires is they can make awful wrong judgments and take 0, absolutely 0 responsibility of it. It is unimaginable in all other sports

Everyone no matter how good they are at their job can make mistakes. Especially in high pressure environments. What you want to do? Fire them? Yeah I can already guess what the BWF will say. “Yeah I know you have been working for us for 25 years but we are going to have to let you go because some angry netizens don’t like the way you umpire and upset their players and made some wrong calls even though it’s really tough multi tasking on the game and making sure the players are safe and not taking advantage of the rules. We are going to spend another 3 years on a trainee to be hopefully better and more experienced than you”. Yeah and we know he will be just another human like you anyway. Yeah that makes sense.
Just like the current Denmark CEO said he brought many semi professional umpires into badminton . Badminton is so poor and badminton is gonna die .

VAR which is widely hated in football is needed desparately in badminton!
Referees should be appointed from among those who also know how to play badminton, at least they know how to judge especially cases near the net.
Most of the umpires are frustrated players. Their eyesight is completely not at the same level as the players. Moreso, the videos cannot lie. They tend to justify their ego than to correct their mistakes. Not just in badminton actually.
Don't know about referees but as an umpire I can say that every other umpire I've met plays or used to play themselves. The pay is terrible so everyone who becomes umpire did it from passion or to help out their club in order to be allowed to organise a tournament. You may think it's easier to make calls since you're standing or sitting at the net. But from experience I can tell you that staying focussed 100% of the time for a long period during a match is very hard when you're just standing or sitting there so sometimes even when you get distracted or zoned out for even a split second, you can miss an important call
@@Blitzhax I agree with your opinion..but..how long we need to see this cases..That's why I think bwf need to do something about this..which is VAR in net situations..because..it will effect player's mental and gameplay ofcourse.
@@dinihadi6279 In an ideal world that would work, but keep in mind that VAR and even hawkeye have made mistakes and will continue to make mistakes. They're not perfect either. The judgement of an experienced umpire from seeing the situation happen in 3D can still outdo that of a 2D video or program. As an AI & Data Engineer myself I can tell you that digital systems are far from perfect because they're also made by humans. It's never a computer's mistake, it only does what it's told. Basically I still trust my own judgement over a digital system because I know how they work and how they were made
Bwf is more interested in keeping their own pockets lined rather than promoting the sport or increasing the money for umpires and better technology.
To be fair, sometimes it is very hard to judge and an Umpire has only a split of a second. Sometimes mistakes happen like 2:45 min, where an umpire can say "sorry, my mistake" and correct his/her error, but i wonder, why BWF cannot introduce a "camera challenge", where an umpire can rewatch in slow motion, if a player touched the net or the shuttle

according to what bwf says, the video frame rate is still low and not HD enough to tell (even though for the audience is clear enough to see the result). BWF should reduce the rights of umpire as it seems they don't even know what is badminton (maybe BWF don't even know what is badminton as well). In long term, people would only think badminton is just a toxic sport and indirectly reduce the image of badminton.

it's funny that many times line judges make no signal or late decision, but when players challenge Umpires say "too late". Seriously, what was that? How could players challenge when the Line judges haven't made their call?
First of all, the players should have someone that can converse in English well to communicate with the referee. Second, BWF needs to introduce something like VAR to this sports. Third, players should be able to complain about the umpires and the umpires will be punished should they made a mistake and refused to change. It's frustrating to see nothing can be done even when the players talk to the umpire of the competition. That sounds ridiculous.
I think all players should speak English. Nobody wants to watch an argument between players & umpires with a translator in between.

There should be reviews or challenges available in badminton for calls other than in/out. In this modern, high-tech world, players are facing these wrong calls in top-class tournaments. It's a shame for players who put in so much effort, only to be affected by INCORRECT UMPIRE CALLS.

They could just introduce a VCR challenge on Faults, it's so ez... To be honest, I don't blame some of the umpires, it's freaking impossible to see when the shuttle being so fast. I acted as umpire for some small tournaments, man, it's not possible to see.
bwf empire has too much power and lee cheuk yiu is always involved in those cases. most recent case is Singapore open couple weeks back

naraoka fault has it justification. It is called invade. Referee made the proper call to not be bias to either side. Player cannot influence the shuttle while it is still in play. Whether it’s by blowing, swing of racquet to create tiny influence to the shuttlecock. At the split second when the shuttle just hit the net tape, and has not head downwards Naraoka did the swing. Although some may dispute the momentum of the shuttle is not going to go through anyway. But the rule is it is still in play.

Thank you for the video. My take on most of the situation. Very simply, if the player/s knows that his/her opponent have been wrongly faulted, simply tell them you will serve into net to return the point and service to them. However, if it is BIG money at stake that can be a challenge.
You seem to be very optimistic in the honesty or sincerity of people. I truly commend you for that. However, it's probably a bit misplaced.
Players may not openly cheat, but none of them will volunteer to declare an error that favours them.

@@adrenaline2002 Not true. There have been numerous occasions. Back in 1982 Thomas Cup, China Han Jian acknowledge to Umpire that the shuttle did touch him. Fast forward Axelsen purposely serve into net when Umpire wrongly faulted opponent and award him a point. In our club weekly games, if you are caught been dishonest, you are put to shame there and then and if you repeat again, the majority will isolate you.

Since the impotent BWF won't do anything about it, only decent way this can be handled is, If the opponent player gives up a point in favour of the affected player (except maybe when umpire doesnt see when a player challenges, as that's a different issue). Most of the times opponents know what has really happened. And also, that's how Axelsen handled when CTC was unfairly deprived of a point. But ofourse not all have sportsmanship like Axelsen.
I think obstruction rule are absurd. As long the racquet didn't gone over the net, it should be allow.
And I think BWF should add another line below the net, to determine whether player cross their foot across opponent half or not.

Why are umpires such hard-asses?? Like I get it you've probably had to deal with unruly players before but like.. not even a shred of self-doubt to say "uuuu actually I might have been wrong" especially calls in such crucial moments as well like what??
The rule allows for the shuttle to be struck on your side and the follow through over the net as long as the net isn’t touched. The umpiring in Badminton has been getting worse and worse and i have been playing and watching this sport for 24 years. We need more training for umpires and they really need to know the rules better that is obvious.

I think better technology is needed now. From the replays that we can see most of the judgement were very biased/wrong. A player should be allowed to challenge in such cases where it is called fault by the umpire not only for in/out. The replays can be reviewed properly and whether the point has to be given or not must be decided base on that. Seriously the BWF system needs to be reviewed. Its high time to.

Bro the people or some authorities watching should also be given a right to make a decision on the umpires calls. And if it’s blatantly wrong, let the player that deserves the point actually get it. the most embarassing referee/umpire in sports is in badminton. too many mistakes and no one can overrule their call. their stubborness is second to none even if its horrible call. even official i rarely saw support the players, only service judge sometimes help, but its so seldom. sickening.

The Badminton World Federation's refereeing mechanism has a problem! Ridiculous decisions have occurred time and again, and there is no error correction mechanism ！
9.03 wonder what is on his mind now that replay has shown he was mistaken. Honest mistake I grant him though. Controversial points should be able to be challenged by video replay. Umpires are given allowances and have normal jobs plus often travel at their own cost. So to assist them in such a quick sport, video replay would assist them as well.
These umpires are absolute disgrace..... makes mistake in judgement and did not make amends immediately. Some more insisted that they are correct and did not apologize. Take the case of Nishimoto, how Nishimoto could have obstructed Ginting when his racket is arched backwards and no where near the net. Furthermore, it was Ginting's shot that hit Nishimoto's racket. You call that obstruction!!!! BWF should setup a review panel to review the performances of their umpires, service judges and line judges. There should also be stats on why certain service judges are more prone to call service faults than others and to which players and teams......

Bwf needs to put more money into the technology to challenge these calls, that way it cannot be argued. Unfortunately they only care about pocketing more of the profits and returning as little as possible back into the game. Greedy people.
The amount of clear and obvious errors being committed by the umpires are beyond shocking.
Why are the umpires not allowed to access instant replays to check the validity of their decision?
Is the pride or reputation of the umpire more important than getting decisions correct? Are they all omnipotent? If we acknowledge that they are human, and are not perfect, then we should be providing them with the tools to make the best possible decision.
Watching some of these videos would suggest that many umpires are arrogant and have no self-awareness or insight that maybe, just maybe, they could be wrong.
Frankly, it's ludicrous that BWF allows incidents like these to continue.
Everytime there is a mistake, BWF needs to come out and declare the error openly to all.
That's what professionalism is.
As long as BWF continues to allow such lunacy, the sport will not progress.
This video is gonna create more confusion on the rule. Because some decision was good.
For example the confusion of tapping at net, and blocking. Player can not block the opponent to make a complete swing. The rule didn’t say the opponent racquet must have hit the other player racquet to have a basis of blocking a swing. Hence while touching each other’s racquet is obviously blocking, but not touching does not mean there was no blocking.
As long as umpire would foresee the racket would get in the way of an otherwise complete swing, it is a fault. The player does not need to do a complete swing to demonstrate it.
There was one where the player was a good 10m away and it was still called as an obstruction, that in my opinion is incorrect
There's some absolutely atrocious decisions made this season. They should have a 'referee hawkeye' where they're allowed two challenges to rules of law.
Sorry to say but the lady at 1:40 is correct. Strict but following the rules, you are not allowed to bring the racket even slightly on to the opponent’s side of the net

Umpires never overrule when a clear mistake is made by the line judge. And in this case, the umpire overruled the correct call from the line judge. So Yamaguchi had to challenge to get her point back.

BWF umpire was infamous with wrong call & yet no improvement action from BWF. Shame on you BWF. Also if I'm the player, I will give back free point to my opponent if the umpire made wrong call. But badminton players are usually lack of sportsmanship.
One more reason for the players to learn English. The Koreans for example could have just explained the situation to the umpire that the line judge didn't make a call. Of course it was mistakes by the umpire in almost all the clips, just saying they could defend themselves better.

Yeah all these umpires are terrible but the players are also at fault for poor sportmanship in a lot these cases. Hitting the net and celebrating? lol 10:46, freaking horrible lol. And the the shuttle called out against Leverdez? Any player could tell that it was out. To just simply ignore it is poor sportmanship. Chou TC called fault for no reason? I really hope Antonsen gave him the point after.
Blaming the officials for their lack of experience and understanding of the physical mechanics of badminton is one thing, but why is sportsmanship and integrity completely dead among the players? It's a rhetorical question.
