Interesting to see that Halon fire extinguisher. Halon has been banned for quite some time now , it depletes the ozone layer and contributes to global warming. I also remember it being banned as an automatic system in engine rooms as there was an incident of a crew member being suffocated when the Halon system was activated. Enjoying your project , I really look forward to seeing the the progress you make.
Sorry S is feeling poorly! Hope he’s feeling better, and so glad you were able to get a little “me time” at the beach. It’s important! A little primer on those patches makes a huge difference. Lovely job. 😎💕😎💕😎

That waters cooling off a lot by now... 😎 all work and no play makes life boring and does your health in ... Your life your calls guys thats why your doing it this way 😎🧙♂️ 🇬🇧💟
Hi Stuart. That Halon fire extinguisher is dangerous. The gas halon is inert and heavier than air. It fills the engine space with heavy inert gas and put out the fire but you cannot breathe in it so you have to get out fast. It looks old and if it went off inside the boat you could be asphyxiated. So leave it outside until you can safely dispose of it.
Hello Marina and Stewart. Really good repairs. Marina, you have a very lovely feeling invoice and Stewart sure knows what he's doing. Okay, I'm out of here and thanks much and look forward to some more, bye now.
Greetings from the Netherlands. We enjoy and live with you. Enjoy this adventure and live your life. We think you are a brave couple and many can take an example from that. Kind regards from us.
Halon 1301 was popular in North America during the 90's but fell into disfavour due to having an adverse effect on the environment. It's still being used in other parts of the world and has been used as a flood system for computer rooms. It's not harmful to humans and a lot of places still recharge the small extinguishers.
Just started to watch your channel.. multiple projects is difficult to juggle at times.. I’d give you advice but organization skills and time management is not my strong suit. You two are doing a bang up job & love your channel. Thanks

Bravo and well done you!
I disagree. Get her started sanding! I love the way she says “we” when he’s doing all of the work! What have they shown her doing? She painted a lamp. Next scene, he’s painting the chrome for her! Not sailing with me , girl!

Just caught up with all your posts. Fantastic job. Much respect. Ditch the halon extinguisher carefully. Halon gas will kill you if you get in a confined space with it. Halon has now been discontinued as a fire extinguisher gas. The delamination in the keel: if moisture has got into the ballast and the water smells as you describe the only way forward is to be utterly ruthless. Keep up the good work and the nightmare will be transformed into your dream boat. David
I’m not the one to talk , but it is important to take a break for yourself/yourselves every now and again , the “mountain you have to climb” will still be there when you come back , and you will eventually get to the top 😃 And it feels good to “open the window” and throw the rubbish out, it’s much quicker then carrying it down the steps , done it many times myself when working on the house. 😃🍻
Nice video, particularly countryside and beach. I would be careful to save stainless tanks. Not sure what you will need for water and fuel. Yes, do not hesitate to relax and visit the beach. I appreciate the careful explanation of the continuity testing and wiring.
Good on you guys for keeping going with your dream, I'm sure it will all be worth it, and you are right about taking a break every now and then, helping you reflect and keep motivated to continue on, All the best, Al
I found your channel after your last video and have watched everything you've uploaded related to Seabird over the past few days. It's a very ambitious and brave project but based on what I've seen of your abilities and the chemistry between the two of you, I have faith that you'll be able to get Seabird to a state where you're happy with her, and even if you don't, you will have learned so much in the process. Don't think too harshly of the people posting negative comments, I expect they are trying to be helpful, and don't realise that unwelcome and unasked-for advice is the opposite of helpful. I've been looking into buying a small yacht as a liveaboard next year and the number of people who have never set foot on a boat telling me I'm crazy and that I will fail... not helpful! It's been really informative and inspiring watching your videos and getting a glimpse of what is involved, what the guts of a yacht actually look like, and what can be done with a ton of hard work and effort. I'm looking forward to following you on this journey!
Already waiting for the next episode! You guys are such great team and fun to watch, as you tackle this awesome project. its inspiring us to take the family out for a few years and tackle the French and European canal ways. Kia Ora from NZ
My calm sailing channel. Recycling a sailboat would likely need periodic recharging of the batteries of the recycling couple! Good health to you both! Thank you for your videos!
Hi guys, your Fireboy is an old Halon extinguisher. Super-efficient at putting out fires without damaging equipment in the engine room but they found out that Halon was an ozone-depleting gas and banned its use. A bit of an historic artefact now. Love your work and video journal, following your adventures from Australia. Best, (another) Stuart
I was going to mention to them , not to set that off accidentally because it's halon. Meant for confined space electrical fires. Deadly to life in confinement.
Our boatyard suggested you could use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner on the keel to help speed up the drying process, its what they do when treating osmosis. Good luck.
It seems the boat was at one time very well kitted out. I'm guessing though, that it was well kitted out for being docked as I don't see a genny for running all the AC loads. Getting rid of all that is probably best as all those things are the first to go bad anyway.
Hopefully Stuart is on the mend, nice beach , it's good to have balance in your life. All work and no play is boring. Looks like you guys are gonna be the go to channel now. Sad about mark and nada but it's a tough life. I do hope yoshi has a good home somewhere I didn't see what they did with the little fella.
Halon fire extinguisher … 😂 that is old! Found your channel by zapping through. I greatly admire your dedication and your „oh that‘s quite all right“ sayings although it‘s falling apart. Chapeau😊 and all fingers crossed you can work out a repair for your keel. Barbara on Pink Penguin
@@SailingSeabird it’s great to have visions. I sit in front of the house that I’m building. I look at it and I imagine the finished project. It’s in my head, but one day it will be finished. I know where you’re coming from 👍👍👍
By the looks of it the water heater has an electric heater and a heat exchanger... u can extend the main motor cooling system into your water heater heat exchanger and heat your water ... get well and gl with your projekt
Cheers for the advice! We might leave the hot water for a bit later on... We have survived without it on the other boat for over three years (most of it living in England) hehe
Hello Seabirds, hope Stuart will get better soon. I am in the process of restoring a 38 footer in northern Italy. It was and is in a much better condition then your boat, but also not as cheap as yours so everything is a tradeoff I guess. I hope you don't give in to the negativity. Boatworks are gruesome at times, but the rewards are worth it (immediate and longterm). One of the first things I did on my boat was to have the underwater part of the hull sandblasted to get rid of the old antifouling and to be able to see what I am dealing with (just a bit of unsolicited advice...;-))
Another tip. I don’t know why it works but if your hands are itching from cutting fibreglass sheets wash them with soap and water as ice cold as you can get.
I found your comments about the comments about you and Stu being lazy. We were talking at work about making a list of things to do, but plans change and the original list doesn’t get done 😂😂 I also found it funny that people are calling you folks lazy while they’re most likely not accomplishing anything, but watching your video and calling you lazy.
Just sudded..looks like a boatload of fun guys..doing the same thing now..just bought a 37 foot..got my work cut out for me..keep the vids coming..there a great help..Phil..cheers from Toronto😁
Maybe already suggested, but to help dry out that keel: hopefully some holes are drilled at lowest point that water drains from. Then afix a plastic sheet like visqueen over all the holes to the hull using something like butyl tape or whatever sticks, and hook a wet/dry shop vacuum to the sheet, sealing the sheet around the vac hose. Then let the vacuum run several hours, sucking out the remaining water and then dry air to help dry out the surfaces. Maybe even a couple days.. turn if off when the noise bothers you and back on when you can stand it. If the vacuum motor starts getting hotter than you think is good, you can introduce some control leaks for more air. I did this by using some pvc pipe sealed to the bag and the hose sealed to the pipe. Then drill air holes in the pipe and cover them with tape. Untape the drilled holes one at a time until you think you have enough air flow for the vac motor. May not need to do that though. I built a whole 30' boat using a shop vac to vacuum bag all the parts and the vac still runs, but definitely shortened its life.
Just a heads up. Halon was banned in europe years ago and seriously nasty if it goes off anywhere near you. What you need is a replacement cylinder with NOVEC1230 in it. Fireboy have a good range of cylinders that will do for the m3 it has to protect. Best of luck. 👍
Im Interested in youre fibre glassing work, what do you fill the hole with before you apply the layers of patches.. Keep it up guys you're doing a really great job...
@@charonstyxferryman Hi Lars.. Thank you, must admit to want to go out and find me a boat to restore, but living in a chilly wet UK it's a daunting prospect. Looking forward to youre next vid guys, take it steady....
Hiya Oleg, The plan at the moment is: Grind out where I drilled, build back with fibreglass, check other areas then cover the whole keel in fibreglass.
@@SailingSeabird I'm "uncomfortable" with what's going on INSIDE - OUTSIDE everything will look great - I would blow it all out with a compressor and make sure that not a drop of water remains (the water was salty, and this ....)
Hi, I maybe missed the description of your chopped strand mat discs? (As generally CSM isn't used with epoxy - it needs the styrene in polyester resin to dissolve the binder so the glass wets out properly.) Are you using CSM made specifically for epoxy, or perhaps have a specific solvent in your epoxy system to help with this? If so, it'd be interesting to know the product details. Thanks...
Hi to you both, I've binge watched all of your seabird episodes today, if you want some tips on fibreglassing can I suggest you watch Sailing Parley Revival, they rebuilt a 45ft cat with holes in and broken bulkheads, I think it would help you a lot. Best wishes and thanks for the episodes.
@@SailingSeabird Harness and secured point is one, but a real discomfort. How about some nets from the deck and 4’ high around the cockpit area where there is a lot of movement. At least ropes strung along stanchions higher up. Something…
My first thought would be putting the stanchions back, including some life lines, although that might be more appropriate for at sea. Your situation looks more like working on a construction site where scaffolding rails at hip level and knee level are a legal requirement because, even falling from 1m platform could already result in serious injury. Always better safe than sorry. Wish you the best.

Another tip. I don’t know why it works but if your hands are itching from cutting fibreglass sheets wash them with soap and water as ice cold as you can get.
I'm really enjoying your videos & progress. Cheers
Hiya Trevor,
Thanks for watching ☺️
Keep going it will be worth it
Keep on rocking! Supernice to follow you guys
As always, another great video and looking forward to more of the same.
Thanks again!
We'll be back very soon...
Cheers for watching, sorry foe the late reply.
I found your comments about the comments about you and Stu being lazy. We were talking at work about making a list of things to do, but plans change and the original list doesn’t get done 😂😂
I also found it funny that people are calling you folks lazy while they’re most likely not accomplishing anything, but watching your video and calling you lazy.
Just sudded..looks like a boatload of fun guys..doing the same thing now..just bought a 37 foot..got my work cut out for me..keep the vids coming..there a great help..Phil..cheers from Toronto😁
You can do it!
Thanks
Thank YOU Ian!!
We are very grateful for your support 🤗
Just a heads up. Halon was banned in europe years ago and seriously nasty if it goes off anywhere near you. What you need is a replacement cylinder with NOVEC1230 in it. Fireboy have a good range of cylinders that will do for the m3 it has to protect. Best of luck. 👍
We didn't know that... but many people has said. We disposed of it properly.
Thanks for the good wishes :)
Looking forward to youre next vid guys, take it steady....
what will you do with the keel or did you just cover up the holes ???
Hiya Oleg,
The plan at the moment is:
Grind out where I drilled, build back with fibreglass, check other areas then cover the whole keel in fibreglass.
@@SailingSeabird I'm "uncomfortable" with what's going on INSIDE - OUTSIDE everything will look great - I would blow it all out with a compressor and make sure that not a drop of water remains (the water was salty, and this ....)
lust ignore the people who say lazy. they have no idea
Nice Job you both are doing. Please get the Fire extinguisher properly disposed as it's content is an ozone depleter.
Mid week video please, excellent thanks
Hi, I maybe missed the description of your chopped strand mat discs? (As generally CSM isn't used with epoxy - it needs the styrene in polyester resin to dissolve the binder so the glass wets out properly.) Are you using CSM made specifically for epoxy, or perhaps have a specific solvent in your epoxy system to help with this? If so, it'd be interesting to know the product details. Thanks...
Mat and epoxy, not good.
Hi Michael!
We don't know them so we'll definitely have a look at them for inspiration. Thanks for suggesting :)
Dears, I like your videos, but, you need to install some preventive measures against falling off the boat. A slip can happen at any unexpected moment.
Hiya,
So true. Someone fell the other day and broke their wrist.
Any suggestions?
Cheers for watching 😃
@@SailingSeabird Harness and secured point is one, but a real discomfort. How about some nets from the deck and 4’ high around the cockpit area where there is a lot of movement. At least ropes strung along stanchions higher up. Something…
My first thought would be putting the stanchions back, including some life lines, although that might be more appropriate for at sea. Your situation looks more like working on a construction site where scaffolding rails at hip level and knee level are a legal requirement because, even falling from 1m platform could already result in serious injury. Always better safe than sorry. Wish you the best.
Marina; very clever of you to pass Covid to Stu so that you could steal a day at the beach! Stuart; careful sir, she is too artful for you - I hope you've recovered and are feeling much better.
I think Mark will carry. On with Wildlings solo especially if he can find a boat as he has salt legs like these two
Hi John!
We are sure he’s going to have a great time and a great adventure is ahead and he’ll be sharing it all 😊
17k ... niiice
do you live on the boat while you are working on it?
A frind who used to work in a fiberglass factory told me that hydrogen peroxide pulls the itchy bits out of you skin. Worth a try!
Hi Pete! Thanks for the advice.
We've never heard that before. We'll give it a go :)
everytime i see videos like this, i think to myself, i dont want a plastic boat. for me steel is much easier, plasma cutter, mig welder and grinder, so easy. but i like your videos.
