This is amazing. I homeschool my son and our first thing every day is to discuss personal growth, Self-esteem and media literacy. My son is ten and already has had negative feelings about himself because of the fake crap pics on IG. I homeschool so I can teach him the stuff Public school will never teach him.

I was listening to all of you discuss your ''first time'' feeling self-conscious about your looks and I was thinking ''wow I don't know that I have a moment like that to pinpoint when that feeling started''. And then it hit me and I started tearing up because it came back to me super clearly. I was in first grade, maybe 5 or 6 years old, and we had gotten our yearly picture taken at school. My mom came to school to pick up my photo and order prints for family and friends (obviously that was before you could just send a digital photo). I had been so excited to get my picture taken that I had been smiling this silly toothy over the top smile, the kind that only kids will make, and when my mom saw the pictures she said they were terrible. She said I looked ridiculous and couldn't give these to people.
We left without ordering a single photo. I was crushed. Every single school photo after that, all the way up to graduating from college, I never smiled again for a picture. I'm 30 and I still struggle with showing teeth on a photo, because I have this deep rooted belief that I look bad when I smile for pictures.
It is horrifying the lasting effect that words can have...Parents and teachers will sometimes say the most horrible things to kids out of love, thinking they're protecting them from something, but often it comes from their own insecurities that they're projecting, and they end up passing them on to these children. People usually mean well, but I think we all have to be a bit more conscious of the remarks we make, and the effect they might have on people. Deep down we're all still that little kid inside that's being told they're not enough and I think we spend a lot of our lives peeling away those layers and trying to figure out who we are without all these assumptions put upon us.

I love the conversation and the thought that went into choosing these beautiful women to speak on body image. After hearing about how photographic images are altered, I realized these beauties have these thoughts in these beautiful bodies. I know they work to achieve their look for work and maybe other things. But I wish there was someone on the panel who looked like me. I deal with body image issues too. I may not have been in beauty magazines but I have a voice. And I should be heard. Love your Impact! Love Lisa and Tom...thank you for inspiring me to stand up for what I believe!

It's easy for beautiful people to feel ugly and then when they overcome those false narratives, they realize they're actually beautiful. But um there are actually some people who are not born "beautiful" and that's a different kind of pain. I'd like to see more of that being addressed.

One powerful practical tool that has helped me : daily meditation . It provides a space where I make it safe to observe myself. I acknowledge that those negative voices/thoughts are not ME. I have a panic attack almost every time I get ready to meditate. Daily practice over time takes the empowerment out of the hands of negative thoughts and back into my will.

I'm only 23 minutes in and am applauding the heck out of this so far! Thank you ladies for discussing this and wanting to make changes. As a parent of a daughter I take it on as my responsibility to teach my daughter about self love and self acceptance. To tell her that beauty really is from the inside. She's funny and loving and kind and giving.. My girl's heart is huge and she is meant for such great compassion. Those are the things we talk about. She also struggles with body image and her friends always talk about being fat or hating aspects of their bodies. I've shown her how the magazine and aren't a true picture of reality. We've found shows that show how lighting or hair extensions, makeup, etc can totally change an image. I care about her character. I'm also working on self acceptance and love for me as I've been told the negative since I was little.. That I'm husky or pudgy or stocky etc. Rewiring my thinking though. It's a process. Love to you all

This video gave me mixed emotions. I’m so glad women today are speaking out on this subject and glad we have social media to spread the news. However it saddens me because this issue has been around for decades and decades and still not as much improvement for the better that I hoped for. I’m 50 years and grew up in the 80’s. So many of us women had to live with comparing ourselves to the women on MTV as well as Playboy magazine. I developed my eating disorder in junior high as well as my distorted self image and still struggle with them both today. I hate to hear how this issue just keeps living on and on, decade after decade. I applaud you ladies and hope that your message helps so many decade after decade. Keep up the awesome work!!!!

Hey Angie! Your message is so powerful. Thank you for opening up. 🧡
Although I agree with your perspective and hold the same to a certain degree, I also believe that the world we see are simply reflections of what we see inside of us. Maybe the reason you don't see much improvement in the world is because you yourself still haven't resolved this issue with yourself completely. So, this still has your attention and what we give attention to, grows. What you're searching for, you will find.
An example: when I was pregnant, I would always see so many pregnant women on the streets and never before nor after my pregnancy was the world filled with pregnant women as it was during those 9 months. 😄
It's hard to abandon habitual thought processes and I know this all too well and am working on it too. With time I'm getting better at thinking more loving thoughts but still slip up with limiting beliefs.
I guess accepting that is key.
      Much love to you!

As a teacher I can say we do talk about the real world versus social media. Students' mental health is diverse and complex. It sounds naïve to suggest that adding a class requirement could simply solve teenage problems. It also sounds like it is up to the teachers to battle Hollywood, media, and culture. I believe it is most important to teach critical and independent thinking skills so that students can apply strong minds to any situation. In this rapidly changing world we cannot be narrowly focused on social media but need to look at what skills students need to be strong leaders. Schools today provide plenty of opportunities for students to compete and gain confidence such as Debate, UIL, Academic Decathlon, etc... Research shows that home life is the biggest factor in a child's development from reading skills to self esteem.

This was a great video. I do agree with you that "Schools do need to change the curriculum so that it is in alignment with our society".
However, I also think parents need to step up their game a bit. They have missed the mark for years now. I see it all the time! Especially in single parenting homes. They do NOT engage with the kids. Parent's are not puting the phone down, long enough to notice the kids. The Parents have gotton so disconnected from their duties as the adult in the home and I do think they leave it up to the teachers to raise the kids. And for me, that is unacceptable.
I can't tell you how many times my daughters have had their friends over and when we sit to eat dinner (as we do every night at the dinner table) their friends always say the same thing "so you have dinner together like this as a family every night?" It breaks my heart. As parents we must be mindful of the values we are teaching our children. We have to be mindful of everything we do and say all day. What words we are feeding into our children?
And furthermore, we should be paying attention to what our children eat, how they sleep and how their physical wellbeing is on a daily basis. There is too much information out there telling us "food" is our main source of disease and illness. Like these ladies said "we should take care of our body's so that we have the energy to live the life we want". And we should be teaching this to our children and every generation.
Lisa congrats on another great video! Much love xo

    Hello ladies.
    There should be more
    conversations about
    accepting who we are.
You ladies are on point. The
    environment that a child is
    exposed to has an impact.
    On children according to
    the comments people
    say directly to a child.
    Can create insecure or
    positive emtions.
    The women in my life
    always said postive
    encouraging words to
and about me. This is why
negative people mouths never affected my emotions. No matter what was said to me.
I've always liked who and what I see in the mirror. I never wanted to look or be like anyone but myself.
Two of my ex boyfriends told me.
They was jealous of me. Which that
statement thrown me off a bit.
In my mind but why. I am a female
your a male. It took me some time to conclude. It was not my attract
    -iveness they were bothered by.
It was the people that had an interest in me and not my boyfriends. Because of my
    friendly positive personality,
    self-confidence and my
    kind nature. My disposition wasn't
exceptable to those guys. One of
the ex boyfriend resented me because of my popularity. That
created a silent hidden agenda to brake my self-esteem. Being so young as I was. I didn't see the red flags at the time. While he did
not succeed in making me feel
    uncomfortable or any less
    about myself.
My aptitude on life never balanced
    out with the boyfriend. Reason
being years later. I realize this
    guy had a narcissist personality
disorder. Which was why we clashed as a couple. When two people don't have the same interest.
    The relationship remains divided.
It doesn't work. God created man
and woman to be their authentic
    self. To accomplish their full
    potentials without limits.
    Let's celebrate life as an
    individual. By being our
    best selves.

My mother delliberately taught us to view the body in a beautifull artistic and unsexualized way. It makes me find great beauty in the impefect body many of us have. Actually making it more appreciated sometimes for its realness and its testimony of our authenticity and individuality,, a testimony of our lives.
She placed an white torso sculpture in our living room, when we later moved in came into our hallway. So we would se it everyday and in later years as one of the first things, when we stepped into the house. I only now think of how powerfull that daily reminder was, also of stepping into our home remembering the values that where laid down there as a first thing. She placed this sculpture when I was maybe 5 years old (I was the youngest of 5. Age might have an influence, but I think it also left an impact on my older siblings, but it may have been greatest on me). She loved to draw and would draw the human body and we would watch and we would draw other things next to her. We all protested a little at first. But we got used to seeing it and how she was teaching us to see it. When we had to draw one in class years later when I was in about 4th grade, it became apparent that my view of it was very different, than that of my classmates, who almost had a fit, where nervously giggling and just had a hard time focusing and completing the task as with their age also in consideration, they could not abstract from the apparent sexuality at all and find peace to appreciate its beauty.
So I recommend giving the pespective of art a try and let it takes time and repetition. I fully intend to follow my moms example.
Now I am 25 and seeing the first signs of a maturing body and aging. I have moments where there is parts of my body that can frustrate me, when they are not exactly how I would like them to be. (I can no longer fit medium sized jeans, and it rather goes up as I excersize more, I'm rather short and now can easily appear a little more stout. So yes it bothers me, but I value health and I think of the beauty of an italian mamma when I look at my body (that is not how I look, but it makes whatever is going to happen ok, as beauty has variety and it reminds me what is more beautifull that just the body) I then dress for my changed body. What I think is beautifull as you age, is particularly in your contenance and your energy, so that is were my focus to improve goes. I have adapted new styles for changing times of my lige with more ease and grace and value each period I feel a woman naturally goes through. I feel as though my feminine strength is growing rather that decreasing. I feel the dicotomy of at times feeling down about certain things of aging, but my overall experience is the possibility and power of growing more attractive as I grow wiser about how to style and dress and express myself, that for me, and I see it for my sisters too, seems to solidify more with age and coming into yourself.
Wrinkles and aging to me from a young age have become a testimony of life lived, of having gone past hard times and having fewer left. They hint of a story and those stories are interesting and whatever it may be, your way of focus changes its attractiveness. I think of my aunts beautiful strong silver hair and her power and personality. Now that I am starting to see my skin age I for sure, try and want to protect it, as I do sense that direct sexual value decrease, but it does not overwhelm that I feel more pride in the personal work I have done, that I feel and experience it makes me a more attractive person as a whole and I see how it can continue to increase. My aging skin only gives me sadness for whether or not that more youthful time that is shows is passing was spent in a satisfactory way, did I enjoy the times of that age? Personally I have some regrets there. But do you see how the focus of the story completely changed?
Side note: Now we are mostly girls and it was a male sculpture, later one of my sisters or my mom made a female clay sculpture that went in the hallway too. I don't know if if it played a role or how my brother felt about it. I haven't really specifically discussed this with my siblings.

    • @amlkfnew
      @amlkfnew 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I want to correct unsexualized to not overly sexualized. I feel like I got a beautifull upbringing and view of healthy sexuality, so just to add that I think it is very important.
And naturally as I hope is apparent. The statue became a tangible, visual symbol of my mothers teachings and a conversation starter. But she followed up on it and still continues to though conversation, maybe not so much in specificly body image, as sexuality and intimacy (because she is actually rather self critical in terms of her weigth, but that might be more about her frustration and sense of a loss of control and agency on the matter perhaps.) Either way she managed to give us the greater foundation, that has allowed me to even build beyond, what I experience she herself feels. I often usually hear said, that you can't give what you don't have. But she laid the ground work for me to have and seek that.

Start a no-makeup campaign or a no-filter campaign or a truth campaign. It is a slow build right now and when we don't see traction in the ways we want, we often times abandon our goals. Stop photo shopping. Stop living in false realities. Media has always been there but it is true that with cable, social media and internet you are overwhelmed with pictures of the physical form. Also most are young pre teen, teen and early twenties before children and hormone shifts. Being healthy and fit nutritiously is what should be promoted in all body shapes, types and forms. We are NOT all built the same so we need to stop comparing, If women would stop buying int fake realities and stop creating it by using photo shop and the like everyone would be better off. Stop trying to people please and look to personal happyness from within and do you. Be the best you you can be and let the rest go.
