Jesus turned water into wine, and drank wine at the Last Supper. Jesus cannot sin, as you rightly say. So therefore drinking alcoholic beverages is not sinful.
Drinking to excess is certainly sinful (doing anything to excess is sinful), and if anyone would choose not to drink because they plain just don't want to, that certainly is okay.

@@GeorgePenton-np9rh True. But if a brother has had a problem with it it's best not to put temptation in his way. Same as anything else. Of course the water hasn't always been healthy to drink so people drank beer and wine. And people in different cultures drink with their dinner. Also medicinal benefits. We just need to ask God for wisdom in each situation.

@@iblameabel So if the type of adultery one commits is a little less potent would that make it OK? Much easier to see it in a different context. Jesus said even bad thoughts are a sin, let alone the action. Our churches have adopted false theologies on many subjects so as not to offend itching ears - Jesus never compromised truth to make others 'comfortable'; because that would increase their chance of being lost. Its truth, ...the following thereof, that sets us free. Not that I've arrived by any means, but I won't deceive myself about scripture to make myself feel better. God Bless

I enjoyed this! I was a drunkard before Christ and the day I submitted my life to Christ and was baptized with The Holy Spirit out on my farm by myself, God radically supernaturally set me free from my addiction of alcohol. (I was an alcoholic since I was 14 years old and been to rehabs, AA and 30 day dry outs as an adult wanting to quit but finding I was never able to on my own) nothing set me free from that spirit of addiction other than Jesus Christ that day! Along with many other things I was set free from and continue to be set free from more things as I’m being sanctified daily in my walk with Christ and seeking Him... but my conviction with alcohol personally is that if God set me free from alcohol, it’s not something I believe I as a Christian should partake in. He set me free from it bc it is sin and not of Him and interfered with making Him first in my life and being a fruitful witness for Him and 1Corinthians 6:9-10 also says a drunkard WILL NOT inherit the kingdom of Heaven. There’s another biblical answer. If we want to go to Heaven we can’t be a drunkard.

Jesus couldn’t have turned that water into ‘alcoholic’ wine, because Jesus cannot sin.
      Let me explain...
In versions including the NASB KJV and NLT, John 2:10 basically states that the men have had a lot to drink:
NASB: “...Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely...”
KJV: “...Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk...”
NLT: “...Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine...”
If the people at the wedding had enough to drink already, Jesus therefore could not serve them any more “good” wine or stronger wine, it goes against scripture saying “Do not get drunk” and “no drunkard will inherit the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus couldn’t have served alcohol at The wedding

@@danielquizon4654 what's the point of eating carbs as you only get fat? Jesus drank wine , Jesus did not get drunk. Paul tells Timothy to take a bit of wine for his stomach problems , he did not say get drunk. Why do so many believers extrapolate having a glass of wine at a meal with being stupid and drinking to excess? Coffee is a simulant as well.

    • @wandertree
      @wandertree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@danielquizon4654 Yes, just like drinking coffee affects me and eating food gives me calories. If I drink coffee to the point that I'm addicted and jittery and can't function without it, I've sinned. If I eat food to the point that I am overweight and lazy, I've sinned. If I drink wine or beer to the point that I am incapacitated or drunk, I have sinned. Yet, none of these things is a sin on its own.
I drink very rarely - the occasional glass of wine when out, the occasional beer. Probably less than 5 times a year. I do enjoy it at those times, but it's not a huge draw for me. I've never been tempted to drink to drunkenness, and I'm also aware I'm fairly sensitive, and I've had no problem limiting myself to one glass on the rare occasion I drink.
If you are someone who has a more sensitive conscience about this issue, you are absolutely correct to abstain. The Holy Spirit may be prompting you to avoid it, and unless you can do it with a clear conscience, it would be sin for you to have it - if my understanding of Scripture is correct.
I'm not trying to convince you to have alcohol, but am sharing the difference between an object that can be used to sin and sin itself. This is an important distinction as many people use food to sin, yet we all know food is a good gift from God. I believe at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, we will be blessed with good food and good drink, yet our physical frailties and sin natures will be removed, so we will enjoy God's good gifts the way He meant them to be enjoyed.

I just spent a half an hour reading these comments, and was led by the holy spirit to this thought......Every person has their own "opinion", or "feeling" about not only this topic, but also many other topics. We tend to "write" our own religion, based on what we want to believe, or what our opinion is. We want to be comfortable. We do not want to be inconvenienced by scripture. We cannot base our walk with Christ on what makes us feel good, or what is convenient in our lifestyle for us to believe. We MUST go to scripture on EVERY topic in life, and model our life after Christ. The Word says, everything we eat, drink, or do, should be done to the Glory of God. And anything in life that does not glorify God, should be cut out of our walk. Everything in our life, after we have been made whole, (by the shed blood of Jesus Christ) should line up with the word of God! I hope this helps someone who reads it, and may all Glory be to God. Blessings and Hope to all.

I do have to tell Ray however that a small amount of unpasteurized, raw fermented beer has good enzymes for the body, more healthful than a chocolate shake using pasteurized milk and sugar. 😉. I'm not saying to drink it for health reasons though. I admire and respect people who don't drink at all and would never drink in front of someone if it made them stumble. Good discussion!

Another interesting fact about alcohol is that throughout the history of mankind, drinking beer was safer the drinking water. In fact in medieval times in Europe, even children drank beer, because the water could make you deathly ill. The alcohol content was likely lower than today's brews.

But unlike food, alcohol is not usually required to stay alive. And when you do overeat, it does not affect your spiritual judgement.
I used to use the same argument as you, by the way.
A commenter pointed out a historical fact about people in medieval times regularly drinking beer, but that obviously did not have as high an alcohol content because it would have dehydrated them. That would be the kind of circumstance when alcoholic drinks would be as necessary as food.
The alcoholic wine during Bible days was also much lower in alcohol content. It went up according to how much sugar was added.
It’s not necessarily a sin to drink; it’s that it’s unnecessary and tricky. Tricky = Bad.
I stopped drinking at parties years ago because I wanted to keep my wits about me when talking to people. I represent the Lord Jesus Christ. What is attractive about someone who can’t think and speak correctly anymore? How could I depend on my thoughts and judgment? There’s no need to drink alcohol and there are other drinks there that are very enjoyable. I also never ever had to worry about whether my driving ability has been compromised.
I stopped drinking at frat/sorority parties way before I even became a Christian, and actually had a great time! Watching the other people acting like idiots was entertaining back then. Now it’s just disturbing and I pity them for thinking they need to do it. I’ve even seen an adult miss their flight because of being too hung over to get up on time the morning after! Way worse than gluttony.

After praying about it multiple times, finally my body actually rejected alcohol. Whenever I would drink, then I couldn't sleep because I felt like I had to pee all night, but no pee would come out, or very little. I think the alcohol was messing with my prostate or something. Now I don't want to drink because of this, and actually being sober feels better. I started making some non-alcoholic beverages and carbonating them in my home-brew keg, so I can drink that. I make pine needle tea with fresh sage in it and carbonate it. It is actually very good!

The good Lord saved me from death (hell) before I was a true Christian believer. God is GOOD! I never desire alcohol or ever wanted it since that day I quit after drinking over 30 years! Just pray and ask for it. If your heart belongs to God, truly and completely, He will answer! Nothing good comes out of alcohol, ever! Does God care if we get drunk, YES! Paul, the Apostle of Christ said yo keep a sober mind. It’s in the Bible a few places that confirm NO to alcohol? Just get in the word. And, remember... NOTHING is worth your salvation! Just quit! I'm so glad you said the chief thing here is to walk in love toward others. That's the number one priority not to do anything that could cause someone else to stumble. (Rom.14:15-21) If we have faith to do something we need to keep it between ourselves and God. (Rom. 14:22) Clearly the scriptures forbid drunkenness. (Do not be drunk with wine Eph 5:6, Not in revelry and drunkenness Rom.13:13, Who has woe, sorrow, contentions, complaints, wounds without cause, those who linger long at the wine. Prov. 23:29-30) But it also forbids being somewhere where it may even appear as if you condone drunkenness as in the pub in your opening part to the video. (Matt. 24:49) That being said in Psalms 104:14-15 we are told that that among the list of good things on this earth that God has provided for us, is “wine that gladdens the hearts of men.” In this context it clearly mentions its mood enhancing characteristics. Grape juice has no mood enhancing characteristics. The text is telling us that used properly it is a good gift from God to lift up or “gladden” our hearts. Then in Judges 9:13 we read in the “parable of trees” by Jotham, a comment of how wine cheers both God and men. The parable has nothing at all to do with alcohol of course but the comment makes clear the purpose for which wine was intended. Used in the correct setting it is for cheering one up. In Zechariah 10:7 it describes their hearts being made glad as with wine, and rejoicing in the Lord. These passages are clearly telling us that the effects of alcohol, in the correct context, is to be praised as a gift of God. The effects I’m talking about here are the effects that take place long before one becomes drunken. These effects are to be relished and appreciated from the giver of all good things… . I’m not talking about the effects that come from over indulging. In Psalms 31:6-7 we are instructed that strong drink is to be used to ease the suffering of the sick and sorrowful at heart. To the one who is dying or distressed by poverty. In this sense it is literally to be used as a form of medicine. We see that this was the common practice of the time otherwise God would not have warned Jeremiah (Jer. 16:7-8) to withhold the “cup of consolation” from the people He had removed His peace from. Obviously in proper context alcohol was intended to be a blessing and not a curse. In Deuteronomy 14:26 God was telling the people how He would bless them for tithing, and how they could spend the money they receive from that blessing. Among the list of things God told them was a blessing was, yes wine and similar drink. However some still want to hold on to the notion that the text is only talking about grape juice and not intoxicating wine. Consider then how in Song of Solomon (1:2-3; 4:10; 7:1-2, 9; 8:2) sex with his wife is compared to drinking wine. I’ll spare you here, but let me just say, that I have never had grape juice that good! And of course we all know that Jesus turned the water into wine at the wedding feast. Again I am commonly told that this was only grape juice or “New Wine.” However verses such as Isaiah 49:26, Hosea 4:11, and Judges 9:13 describe “New Wine” as intoxicating. In fact at the great feast we are told we will sit at in heaven, Jesus told us new wine would be served. However Isaiah spoke of this same event (Isaiah 25:6) and described this wine as having been “aged” and well refined.

A funny story, when I first turned my life over to Christ and was baptized I was still battling alcoholism but my battle wasn't about my behavior while drunk. It was just not being able to stop drinking in general lol. I'd get hammered and have that drunk "I love you, man!" talk with God. I don't get weirdly emotional or cry or anything. I just liked to drink a lot and get really amped. But with the healing spirit in me, I just lost the desire to drink constantly. I still every once in a while have my little brews like this weekend while I enjoyed my bible study and research. But it's only occassionally that I drink now. It just feels natural not to drink that often now when before it just felt natural to drink quite often. I'm glad because I always knew it was an unhealthy habit in general but I never felt any desire to stop. I don't really even think about it any more lol.

I really feel like Jesus or Paul would have been explicit about never imbibing even a sip of alcohol and not just Paul condemning being a drunkard.
Why would Paul lay out that a Godly woman shouldn't drink "much" wine? Why wouldn't he just say "any" wine?

So your gut is correct. The reason it is not stated to never even take a sip of alcohol is that to do so is in fact not a sin, and also because, as Paul told Timothy, a little wine for the stomach sake, medicinal purposes (of the time especially), was beneficial. But the Bible does in fact explicitly come against drunkenness many, many times over, old testament and new. It says to remain sober and vigilant until the return of Jesus, that no drunkard shall enter the kingdom, etc.

I have been raised in Mormon faith (of which I don't believe in anymore, I believe in the Bible not the other LDS canon, and I think Joseph Smith is a false prophet conman) and I was taught from a young age to not consume drugs (alcohol included) and not do lusting among the other ten commandments. I discovered Living Waters and I really like Ray Comfort as I feel he preaches the gospel of Christ. I have a friend that knows a fellow coworker that has schizophrenia (in a past employment) that the guy with schizophrenia drank alcohol and a voice told him to chop his arm of (I forget which arm? ) and the guy that drank the alcohol with schizophrenia listened to the voice and did chop his arm off. The guy with schizophrenia that chopped his arm off because a voice told him to while he was drinking alcohol stopped drinking alcohol and is still alive today. I see the great danger in alcohol, and there are other things to drink to have fellowship with people without the danger of it taking over my sobriety and leaving an "bad example" to my friends who are or were "given" to alcohol!

Guinness was founded by Arthur Guinness, an enterprising Christian who wanted to get Irish people to stop drinking trash whiskey. The stuff is quite nutritious, has a low alcohol content, and is "heavy" enough that it's basically impossible to get drunk on. Psalm 104:15 says that God created "wine that maketh glad the heart of man." Scripture also speaks of wine in a positive context in the Song of Solomon and in several places in the Proverbs. Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding at Cana, as we are told in John 2; in light of what v. 10 says, it's impossible to conclude that the wine was not fermented. Drunkenness is a sin; drinking is fine. Even the Puritans drank in moderation; this whole idea that it's evil to drink wasn't introduced into mainstream Christianity until the 19th century, by the temperance movement.
In short, Christian opposition to moderate alcohol consumption is a modern and a legalistic development.

Everlasting arms? Safely? It's a beer commercial. I believe that the only way one would come to that conclusion is if they drink alcohol and want to justify that it's ok. There are many scriptures that one can turn to and hear clearly God's warning against the use of alcohol. I'll leave you one: Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

Watching as a kid what alcohol did to my parents, (parties, wild, angry drunks fighting and throwing up all over themselves, etc) I decided I didn't want any part of that, so I never touched alcohol until I was in my mid twenties. I was 25 years old when my wife at the time turned 21, and she wanted to drink and party. Not wanting her to feel guilty and drink alone, (trying to be a "good, supportive husband") I decided to try drinking with her. Spent two months drinking with her, mostly light, fruity beers, but I tried some heavier liquors twice, got drunk twice, had a horrible hangover both times, and decided to stick with the light stuff. But then one night at the club, while I was playing pool, my wife was sexually assaulted on the dance floor. Being drunk herself, she couldn't defend herself. She couldn't even describe the guy because she couldn't think straight. It was then that I decided never to drink again. I haven't tasted alcohol in 17 years, and I'm never going back.

Doing things in moderation with control and discipline like drinking a beer in front of your children can be a good example of the benefits of a disciplined life. Imagine a father tells his son "Your mother lets me have 1 beer after dinner on Fridays". This not only shows discipline but respect for a wife's authority and judgement. Yes it's easier to become an alcoholic by drinking one beer a week as compared to no beers a week - I can't argue with that simple logic. In that it is overall best not to drink at all. The health benefits of wine and beer can be found elsewhere in the food kingdom.

You know whether your drinking is sinful or not. If in doubt? Don't drink. Also, if you can drink, don't drink around others who may stumble into sin because they really shouldn't drink. I find it hard to believe that it is 100% "sinful" to drink, even though I haven't had a beer in 5 years after too many years of drinking... Don't judge your Brother and ask that he doesn't judge you. Jesus' First Miracle was making a fine wine at a wedding feast so the mere drinking of Alcohol can't be sinful.
