Marner was just saying how they are treated in this market - they are adored, worshipped, “treated like a god” - nothing out of line - anyone who was put out by that is biased … and I want the guy traded btw so I am not a Marner apologist
Yeah, I saw tweet by Westhead and other media members criticising him for this. I watched the clip and straight up don't understand why people are mad. Also, not a Marner fan and think he needs to be traded as well
The Marner quote reads as "we're treated very well and have high expectations placed upon us". Probably a bad choice of words but nothing inflammatory.
i've been watching mitch since he was on the knights. he's been my favourite player ever since, so it's very bittersweet knowing he has to be the one to leave. there's a lot of hate for him right now in the fanbase because he's been invisible in so many playoff runs, and while the criticism is warranted, it sucks losing one of your stars, especially because mitch is so much fun to watch when he's on his game. a part of me wonders how it would turn out when tavares leaves but ultimately i know 40% of your cap on 3 players is a one way ticket to disappointing playoff runs every time, you need depth to win it all. it's like you said, simply, the mix just doesn't work. i feel like when it actually becomes a reality, a lot of that negativity will turn into a bittersweet feeling for most of us. i'm sure wherever he goes i'll become a semi fan for that team as well
I also have been watching Mitch since his London Knights days. In my opinion he’s the most dynamic player in the league. Dubas screwed the team with his giant contracts, but I don’t want to lose Marner. Let’s wait for Tavares’ contract to expire and use his salary to make moves. I’m willing to wait. I’m totally disappointed they can’t do anything in the playoffs, but I love watching these guys play. Hopefully everyone stays healthy next year and we ice the full team as designed.
I like him. I think he was putting in a position of leadership far too early. I don’t question his work ethic, if anything, I put it on coaching. Marner Was not someone whose skills would make a massive difference in the playoffs against the team prepared for people like him like Boston was. And Florida last year.

Remember what MacKinnon said at his press conference after losing to Vegas? I think it put his teammates on notice, but importantly, management. Not that I need to make lots of money, and I love my teammates
Leafs are my 2nd favorite team after the Avs the contrast of these teams is so intriguing. On paper there not a massive difference. Obviously Makar on D It's their team mentality that's the biggest difference Mac takes them on their shoulders and the team follows. The leafs don't have that.
Marner clearly meant that they're put on a pedestal in Toronto. The expectations are high and when it's good it is great, but when it's not it isn't. Gods was not the word he wanted.
Toronto actually played a great series and fought back to tie the series and lost in overtime. The problem isn't this team, it's the history of the last 30 years they drag around like a ball and chain.
@@wreckzc I would say the last 7, as the caps were greatly favored to win in 2017. These have been very good teams, but not stanley cup championship teams. Hard for Leafs fans to comprehend, but Bruins fans see their team as "chokers." Lol!
Respectfully, im pretty sick of this narrative. If *that's* the thing holding the team back, the history and the fan pressure are too much for any group of athletes to succeed under, just fold the franchise now. Because that's not changing.
"Toronto played a great series" Toronto is a team built around a high scoring offense that scored 12 points in 7 games, only one of which was Power Play in spite of over twenty attempts. I'm sorry, but if you thought this was a "great series," then things in Toronto are even worse than I thought.
I really do think its impossible to win with Leafs fans sometimes. Is Mitch's answer to the "being right there" question generic and boring? Yes. However, given the ridiculous media attention, boring is the only safe play. Look at what happens when you go even slightly off script, like Mitch did with that "gods" comment. It gets blown up and completely taken out of context and now everyone's got your name on their lips... and its almost NEVER in a positive way.
The problem with the Leafs is Tavares. You can't put the weight of a team on his shoulders. You don't pay a 2nd line guy $11M; You can get 2 defensemen for the cost of 1 Tavares. Your defence is already improved.
Tavares always gives responses that he thinks the media wants to hear. Reilly, who'd be my choice as captain for this club speaks the truth. Captain Cupcake says "We're right there!" Rielly, asked the same question says success is attainable but at the same time a ways away. The guy is honest in his assessment of his club.
Marner needs to go the same way DeMar DeRozan had to go. DeRozan was a well-liked, well-respected, All-Star level player, and the Raptors and the fans loved having him on the team. But the reality was that having him around wasn't enough to help the Raptors win, so they traded him. And we all know how it worked out. Mitch is great, but it's time if this team wants success.
Yep and that was on a team that had actually made a conference final and routinely got out of the first round and also fired their Coach of the Year lol
I've said it before and I'll say it before, the issue with the core 4 is with them as people. I'm calling out them personally. Every other star player has taken a pay cut to win. These guys take as much money as they can every contract to the detriment of the team and sadly the team has management who is more than willing to pay these guys. They have no reason to win and at this point I don't think the core has the desire to win a cup.
They have to get the big $ contracts because in Canada they are in the highest tax bracket; their income is taxed at 53%. That's crazy, knowing these guys receive less than half the money they sign for.
Agreed. If the Leafs managed to get, say, Clayton Keller + Connor Ingram + picks, I'd look at that as a win, especially if you can flip Keller for a legit #1 RD.

It's just a numbers game. There are more Leafs fans because somehow they are allowed just about all of Southern Ontario and that's a lot of Canada. Wish your nucks all the luck in the playoffs.
I think you answered your own question & why the Leafs are hated, they have the most reach & they pay the bills just like the Yankees, Cowboys & Lakers. I wish your nucks the best btw
This team was not close. The fact they made it a series down 3-1 is impressive, but it doesn't absolve anyone from the fact that they lost 4 of 7. They backed into the playoffs, they couldn't win at home until it was do or die, and most of their top players were not their top players in the playoffs. How do you expect a team that averaged 3.63 goals per game to win when they only average 1.71 in the playoffs? Answer: You don't.
Wouldnt be the worst thing in the world, if they can get JT at a vheaper number hes still worth it, and you tell marner hes getting a cheaper deal or let him walk. Aslong as they get some real coaches they could see how the core plays with actual direction
The next step was the 3 rd round they have regressed. Never winning a presidents trophy or your division is just a good regular season not great, now add 7/8 first round losses and its just brutal. Someone tell JT it takes 16 wins for a cup maybe he forgot because of his age and only making it to the second round in his whole career twice, time for a new captain that speaks up and holds his team accountable .From management down big changes need to be made, what would Boston or Florida, Vegas etc. do... exactly winners dont stop striving and changing to get better and they are ruthless.

Oh they're running it back, and you'll be happy watching the flashy plays/goals. New goalie, couple of old guys, a rat or two.... ladies and gentlemen your 2025 maple leafs !!
I don't think Marner's quote is that bad, I don't think he means "gods" like people expect too much of them in terms of performance, that would be an insanely out of touch thing to say, I think he means more like the attention and cheering of the fanbase is like no other which is a fine quote. I actually prefer his response to Matthews and Nylander, I don't even know why they had to talk about the scapegoats and narratives just to try and defend Marner, if you wanna defend your teammate then just say "he doesn't deserve to bear the heat alone, it's a team effort and we lost as a team" that feels like it creates way less friction that what they said.
I would keep the same team and once they get you near the playoffs: trade players at the deadline to get key players you need to get through the playoffs.
I don't know why the Leafs need a new Goalie, they had a strong tandem. The Leafs need to get players to sign team-friendly contracts so they can afford to fill out the rest of the roster. But Canadian taxes are going to make that difficult.
Everyone has to lay TF off Mitch for that ‘like gods’ comment. He was a Leafs fan his whole life, making him love hockey and becoming so good he got drafted by them. a goddam dream come true. He looked at the Leafs as gods and now he’s a Leaf. F*ck all y’all for shitting on him. It’s a team sport and last time I checked there were a lot of underperformances across the board.
I’m not even a huge fan of the Leafs, but I do enjoy watching them and I was 100% rooting for them even though I knew Florida was on the other side of all of this. It’s frustrating to me, so I can only imagine how it is for the fanbase.
We won’t know if John or Mitch are asked to waive. They won’t come out and say it publicly. They’d be able to choose what teams they go, if they did choose to waive. Those teams will fleece the Leafs because they know that they have limited trade options. This team is so screwed. More cap is taken up next year by Matthews and Nylander. Don’t expect next year to be any different.
The armchair gms think the leafs can just ignore the NMC's. They negotiated these for a reason. And you don't trade your stars when their value is at an all time low
When your top players have no scratch in there face and some of them are wearing erring you know that you have a tough team whit balls build for the playoff.

You guys said there was two coaches but really there was one no one expected them to win back then they were to young but the system has been beaten into them for 7 YEARS. Maybe just maybe this is a system issue. Could it be possible that it isn't all the players that maybe the system needs to change. Marner will be there at least a year change the coaches and see what happens.
Thank you Steve, for always approaching your fandom with honesty and self-awareness and earnestness. I can't imagine how hard it is to base your career on something you, as a human, are so passionate about. I hope, for your sake, the Leafs figure it out soon - they may not deserve it, but you do.
And it's dumb. No one actually thinks this way. They are under less pressure than literally any championship team in North American sports. The NBA, NFL, and MLB dominate the NHL in viewership and media attention. This is an awful excuse, that needs to stop being repeated.
@andrewhooper5933 lies, leafs are under the biggest microscope in the nhl, everyone is waiting to either see them do good or fail! Legit the same things that happens with gods in any religion.
Don't in this universe compare the Leafs to the Capitals. The Capitals weren't even meant to be a playoff team. Has older players faze out new guys and young guys vs Presidents trophy winner. No expectations at all. Played the Rangers well. Was not a let down like the Leafs in their core 4 prime. Sammy stole the Capitals from their prime and has done the same to the Leafs. That is the only comparison.
About the leafs being close, that is an interesting point about their opponents 2019: bruins made finals 2021: Canadians made finals 2022: Tampa made finals 2023: Florida made finals While I agree it is not close, I do find it interesting that every year (except the 2020 Covid play in year) since 2019 the team that beat the leafs made the finals…. It may not be close for the leafs, but, is it fair to say that, arguably, the leafs have had the most difficult road to the Stanley cup finals? Arguably? Maybe? Marner was just saying how they are treated in this market - they are adored, worshipped, “treated like a god” - nothing out of line - anyone who was put out by that is biased … and I want the guy traded btw so I am not a Marner apologist
Yeah, I saw tweet by Westhead and other media members criticising him for this. I watched the clip and straight up don't understand why people are mad. Also, not a Marner fan and think he needs to be traded as well
Absolutely nothing wrong with what he said.
The Marner quote reads as "we're treated very well and have high expectations placed upon us". Probably a bad choice of words but nothing inflammatory.
Yeah, I think you’re right. Does come off initially as cocky and immature but just a poor choice of words.
i've been watching mitch since he was on the knights. he's been my favourite player ever since, so it's very bittersweet knowing he has to be the one to leave. there's a lot of hate for him right now in the fanbase because he's been invisible in so many playoff runs, and while the criticism is warranted, it sucks losing one of your stars, especially because mitch is so much fun to watch when he's on his game. a part of me wonders how it would turn out when tavares leaves but ultimately i know 40% of your cap on 3 players is a one way ticket to disappointing playoff runs every time, you need depth to win it all. it's like you said, simply, the mix just doesn't work.
i feel like when it actually becomes a reality, a lot of that negativity will turn into a bittersweet feeling for most of us. i'm sure wherever he goes i'll become a semi fan for that team as well
Extremely well said! Imagine if Tavares was done this season and we could use his 11 million. Then keeping Mitch would be okay.
"we're right there". Someone bursts out laughing.
I mean that OT goal was indeed hilarious. Pasta skating by 5 leafs like they were already on their way to the bench
marner is 100% correct in his comment about being treated like gods in toronto. the ridiculous reaction from fans and media just continue to prove him right

Even with less points and less skill but we’re more built for the playoffs like a more dynamic strong team how is that wrong? Like we’re already a 3rd place team in our division. So what if we take a wildcard spot or were 3rd with less points
Can someone explain to me why Tavares is the leaf’s captain?
Cus Matthews got in trouble in Az the year we were deciding our captaincy. So they gave it to J.T
Because he isn't prone to picking his nose on camera... True captain quality.
Mathews is captain next year
@@dolandarkxgrandayy6953 matthews doesn’t want to be captain. If the leafs struggle next year he’s out.

As a non Leafs fan, I think Marner was probably stating the obvious about playing in Toronto and it ruffled some feathers.
Marner clearly meant that they're put on a pedestal in Toronto. The expectations are high and when it's good it is great, but when it's not it isn't. Gods was not the word he wanted.
Reilly’s answer was one of a leader. He reminds me of Chris Kreider in that way. Someone who has leadership qualities but doesn’t have the captaincy.
He sounds like the only one who actually feels sad about all the losing.
JT was digging deep for cliches.

Toronto actually played a great series and fought back to tie the series and lost in overtime. The problem isn't this team, it's the history of the last 30 years they drag around like a ball and chain.
Ok, so let's just look at the past 8. It's still not good enough.
"Toronto played a great series"
Toronto is a team built around a high scoring offense that scored 12 points in 7 games, only one of which was Power Play in spite of over twenty attempts.
I'm sorry, but if you thought this was a "great series," then things in Toronto are even worse than I thought.
Regardless of what was said, Nylander's fit with the all black fleece and hat combo goes hard. Young Phil Collins energy
He was never comfortable as a captain on the Island. An A? Would have worked. He’s a skilled player, but never really a strong leader.
Kawhi “The Klaw” Raptors NBA 2019 Champions. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

The Leafs have tons and tons of money. They’re not worried. Doesn’t matter if it keeps going on and on like this ….they still make lots of money.
Marner would be fantastic PR for Utah...
Agreed. If the Leafs managed to get, say, Clayton Keller + Connor Ingram + picks, I'd look at that as a win, especially if you can flip Keller for a legit #1 RD.

Mitch isnt saying they are gods, he's saying that people in the city, hell even kids, idolize them being on they team.
I have a bad feeling that the core 4 will stick together for 1 more season and the only change will be firing Keefe and Shanahan!

This team gaslighting us is very old. I appreciate Reilly's honesty. I am looking forward to seeing Marner on another team.
I don't know why the Leafs need a new Goalie, they had a strong tandem. The Leafs need to get players to sign team-friendly contracts so they can afford to fill out the rest of the roster. But Canadian taxes are going to make that difficult.

No expectations at all. Played the Rangers well. Was not a let down like the Leafs in their core 4 prime. Sammy stole the Capitals from their prime and has done the same to the Leafs.
