      @@OriginalMasters I think a lot of the mechanics in Dread are too complex to expect people to just figure them out. Imagine how long it'd take many people to figure out you have to hold down the right arrow button for scan pulse or hold R for a bit to charge storm missiles and power bombs, especially when holding R is already how you use cross bombs. You have SO many more abilities in Dread compared to Super, trying to explain them without tutorials just wouldn't work.
      Also, you can always just NOT read the tutorials if game accessibility is so offensive to you, y'know. Personally, I'd rather not pointlessly gatekeep new players when Metroid really NEEDS to sell as much as possible to become relevant again so we don't have to wait another 19 years for Metroid 6.

    And now, Max sees the truth of why there is an _entire game genre_ named after Metroid and Castlevania. This game has its flaws (which game doesn't), but it did so many things right and ahead of its time that it set the standard for many, many games afterward that yearned to follow in its footsteps. Haters can cast shade on it all they wish, but it cannot be denied that Super Metroid stands tall for many good reasons as a gem of the game industry.

    I firmly believe Super Metroid stands strong to this day. It doesn't need the " *AT THE TIME* this was good" excuse. No, they came up with a formula so perfect it still can go toe to toe with modern 2D games 27 year later. It's insane

    • @SMNtheNight
      @SMNtheNight 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      I would argue that Super Metroid is still best of its kind to this day, and there's a damn good reason the genre is named "Metroidvania." The genius level design and sequence breaks all throughout the game are insane. It actually rewards you for trying little tricks to get to places you aren't normally supposed to reach and bypass getting certain upgrades. I still haven't seen another Metroidvania have level design come close to this degree of inter-connectivity and raw atmosphere.

      The only negative aspect of Super Metroid are the performance issues. Slow downs, drops of frames, it takes forever to transition between areas, the sound could be clearer, etc.. but with some small hacks, you can make it run like butter, so the only weakness is erased

      @@neloverg3774 wow....OG Castlevania? Man, being brutally honest by today standarts that game looks terrible, and, to be honest, it plays terrible too, the controls (specially when jumping) are incredibly stiff. Plus it's a game with arcaic design and systems things like timer, score, lives, passwords etc. Those are all things game designers got rid off as gaming design evolved. I could maybe defend Super Castlevania 4 or Rondo Of Blood, but the same way I can't say original Metroid holds up I can't say original Castlevania does

      @@RRRRRRRRR33 but honestly, that’s the biggest gap between I think my generation of gamers(I’m 28) and yours if your younger who have grown up with newer games-the stuff your talking about doesn’t matter…..like at all. I know it’s nice to have those for sure but at the end of the day it’s the gameplay and overall experience together that should define this games legacy. I think you even bringing that up as “weakness” for this game just isn’t fair because it was released in 1994…where none of those things mattered to the audience who grew up with at the time compared to audiences who play games today. For example the slower transitions you talk about, that was Purposely crafted into the game based on the actual hardware limitations they had at the time. As for frame drops, while I don’t honestly know what FPS super Metroid normally runs at on the SNES, again it ran unbelievably well for the hardware that existed in 1994. Your opinion is always valid but I think you should take that into consideration before you call that a weakness for the game.

      @@TheDarkkilla12 Well to be fair, the only reason he even played through Super Metroid is because Dread captivated him. Metroid Prime 4 is still in development so if it also captivates him, then perhaps he will play through at least the first Prime, I just hope he doesn't play through it using a GameCube controller because as much as enjoy Prime & Echos, the controls suck. However with that being said, the Wii controls also make the game far too easy. For example, I beat the 2nd version of Prime 2 only taking two hits and not losing a single energy tank, his first form took two energy tanks off me. Then again I suppose I'm also a veteran so that gives me an edge but even so, it's still much easier when you aren't fighting the controls and can aim freely while still controlling your movement. With GC controls you have to Hold L and stand still, much like Resident Evil where when you aim your gun you're stuck in place and unable to move.

    • @RokushoTheRavager
      @RokushoTheRavager 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheDarkLink7 I'll admit, it was tough not to backseat, not because I want to see him finish it, but because a lot of times he was really overanalyzing the situation and other times he was being really dumb and making things so much harder on himself. The Shinepark stuff can be difficult to figure out so I give him a pass there, but a lot of times with the grappling hook, he was being extremely impatient and that's why he kept falling.
      Like for instance the entrance to the Wrecked Ship, that was painful to watch. Granted it was frustrating, but it was also incredibly hilarious at the same time because of the comments Max made, so that made up for it. While I don't think the grappling hook is designed very well in this game, a lot of the failure comes from human error and extreme lack of patience, not faulty design. If he does play the Prime games he'll probably love how simplified the grappling hook is now, because it isn't NEARLY as frustrating.
      I hope in MP4 you start with it, because in 1 & 2 all your upgrades are just taken away, one by a blast, the other by Dark Samus and the Ing, however in three you start the game with all your main upgrades and actually keep them all except for the grapple hook and Missiles. I've never quite understood why that is, well Grapple hook anyways, missiles I completely understand why they never give them to you, but it would be nice to have one of Samus's main items right from the get go for once.

    this has been quite a journey, I've been playing this game for so long that I don't even remember what was the intended route anymore. Seen Max being amazed by everything in the game is such a fresh breeze that I haven't felt in decades because every video here in youtube is either a review or speedrun and it's really difficult to find this kind of stuff so I really appreciate it.
    I'm also amazed about how short Max's attention actually is, this video could have been way shorter if he just remember what he did or saw minutes ago xD but me containing myself not to yell at the screen was part of the experience, I've never thought that I would see someone going through the forgotten highway twice or just backtrack lower norfair while standing below the entrance to mickey mouse room or simply miss the items in the billy mays room xD I'm so used to this game that stuff like that really spiced things up and I love it.
    now, if we could only get a reaction of max watching a 100% run just for him to notice how much did he miss, that would be great... unless he wants to play it again to see if he can get more items XD

      To be fair, Other M had good gameplay. What sucked was the storytelling and forced locking of key abilities until you were told you could use them... even when you were facing a life or death situation like BURNING TO DEATH IN A ROOM because hey, turning off the Varia Suit is always a good idea. :D

    How Max feels at the end, when he's gushing over Super Metroid, is how so many others feel when they finally sit down and play Super Metroid. From those of us (like me) who were there since Metroid 1, to those who got in during the early 2000s with Zero, Fusion and the Prime games, to the people who got into the series because of Dread...
    Welcome to the fandom, Max. Can't wait for you to play Zero Mission, Fusion, Samus Returns/AM2R and the Prime trilogy.

    Sure, the most important thing is that you had fun and yeah, you didn't miss any super life altering things, but oh God, this poor game... so many undiscovered and unexplored hidden rooms and areas 😂🙈

    One of the things I like about the Ridley fight here is that he straight up DPS races you. He's a giant space dragon, and he's gonna beat your ass, and no chick in a tin can with a pea shooter is going to stop him. You gotta brawl him, dodge as much as you can, but he is no gimmick boss here

      It fits perfectly with his story and character. Ridley and Samus want one thing and one thing only in regards to one another, to see the other dead. So when they fight it's fierce, violent and very personal. Samus ain't gonna' go go karting with Ridley, she's going to shove an explosive so far up his ass it stops at his throat.

      It isn't designed all that well, but if we're all being honest here a lot of the frustrations players face comes down to human error and extreme lack of patience, not faulty design. Majority of the time when Max kept falling is because he was trying to rush through it and the game punished him accordingly.
