@@DangStank If we're going "evil" versions,
Sadness could easily be emptiness or depression. Edginess could be a part but if it.
Disgust could be Judgemental or even something like Ego/Selfishness. Heck, self-esteem both high and low could come from Disgust. A form of entitlement maybe. "I'm not like THOSE other girls! Those other girls wear PINK!!"
Anger could be rage or outright intrusive thoughts. Heck, anger issues are common in teens.

They already established a way to represent anxiety. In each person, there's a "chief" emotion who's in charge in general. For Reilly, it was Joy, for her father, Anger, for her mum, Sadness. Fear being promoted to chief in Reilly would be a pretty clear representation of general anxiety. Adding the new emotion just kinda shoots the premise in the head since the entire point of ending of the first one was that you can feel complex emotions borne from combinations of the base ones. Not that you'll suddenly experience new emotions when you hit puberty that disappear when you're an adult.

The great thing about the original premise is that it aligns with basic human psychology. This here doesn’t give a fig about actual human psychology. You hit the nail on the head; real-life anxiety isn’t a “new” emotion, it is existing emotions/physiological reactions (the fight-or-flight response, aptly represented by the fear character) left unregulated and running rampant.

In the post credits scene, where you went through different character’s heads and saw their emotions, the popular girl was shown as having Fear as her lead emotion and displaying general anxiety. This is just bland millenial writing. A new emotion I would say if they added one may be would be like rebellion or romance, things that come out more when you get older.

Anxiety is an emotion, that is actually not the same as fear or sadness.
      Anxiety is -
Anxiety is different from fear in that fear is defined as the emotional response to a real threat, whereas anxiety is the anticipation of a future threat.[4] It is often accompanied by nervous behavior such as pacing back and forth, somatic complaints, and rumination.[5]
As adults anxiety has a big part of out life more than any emotion imo.

Whatever one's opinions are on the original, clearly Inside Out was made with a lot of care, and resonated with a lot of people because of it's themes and messages. It's one of the few pieces of media period that criticizes toxic/forced positivity, and it clearly held a lot of value to director Pete Doctor specifically, especially as he also hails from Minnesota, and shares a lot of anxieties with moving away from all you know to another state entirely.
So to have a sequel which has very little of the original creative team actively working on it feels...worrying, in a way. It feels like they're just seeing what kind of content they can mine out of their back catalogue since many of their recent films (while still financially successful) have made audiences feel more weary.

I thought about that very idea before actually, but with Yoshikage Kira from Jojo as a basis because my mom and I were talking about him in a psychological way. Because that's what we like to do over coffee, talk about horrors! Haha!
Joy is the main drive but as a negative form in desire and addiction. "Something about killing and dismembering a woman's hand to keep (because that's what he does in the show) is enticing. I want this hand. It makes me feel so good."
Disgust and Anger are two prominent emotions. It's literal hatred for himself and others. "It's one thing to admit I have a fetish, but how DARE I have something that's so personal! How DARE these people interrupt my own happiness? How DARE these nails grow so long? I hate it! I want to love these women, but I also HATE women... but I'm not gay because I hate the touch of men!" Which leads to,
Fear. "Don't get caught. Don't get caught. Don't get caught. Don't let them know who you are. Keep this charade. If they ever find out, I'm done for. And with good reason. I can't let ANYONE know."
The one emotion that doesn't really get brought up a lot is Sadness, but it's still there. Sadness that after you've done what you've done, you can't go back. "I want to live a peaceful life. But I've gone too far. I'm far gone. They will never understand."
Basically, we did one big experiment of the inner thoughts of a fictional serial killer.

To be fair, I dont think the original directors of Inside Out ever expected a sequel to exist, it’s a pretty rounded one-and-done kind of film about growing up, where Sadness works as a moniker for depression and Joy’s acceptance of her is what creates “new” emotional experiences (the memory orbs displaying different colors being the result).
The second movie hasnt come out yet so Ill hold my judgements, but it feels like itd work so much better if the core emotions suddenly found a new color on a memory orb, and investigate to discover a “new land of emotions”, that then travel over to the “main controls”, rather than just suddenly appearing out of nowhere. Also, Anxiety is the only “quirky relatable mental illness” character we know of, which is much easier of a concept to display to new audiences than Envy or Ennui. Also, I dont exactly believe addressing mental health in a film about experiencing life thats targeted towards families and adolescents is necessarily a marketing strategy, its just feels like the natural progression of Riley’s character

What I really hate about these new characters is how they mess up the dynamic Pixar had with the original emotions to convey emotions we feel in real life.
Riley's turmoil in the first film, had it been handled in the way it seems like Inside Out 2 is going to go, would involve a sixth emotion being responsible for everything. But because they kept it as simply being a result of how the base five emotions work, it presents emotional hardship in a way that is both a lot more realistic and a lot more helpful: the vast majority of the things we feel are just results of our base emotions, just made more complicated over time. For example, anxiety is not a new emotion, it is a combination of fear, sadness, and anger. It's simply an extension of the fear we already feel with the intricacy of our life as we get older.
The way Inside Out 2 seems to be going is foregoing creative use of the original five emotions for the sake of introducing new marketable characters that are "relatable". While I don't normally mind cynical things like that in media, what annoys me so much about it is that I think it's going to complicate the way they explain these feelings instead of making it simpler, which, in my opinion, is not a good way to tackle it for those who suffer from them.

They use the emotions in the parents to prove a theory, but they are going to introduce new emotions in this second movie. Emotions the parents don't have, like anxiety. Those emotions in the parents' head were just a joke. All the characters having mustaches or long hair was a really easy way to just reuse models. If we take everything literally, then they would be implying that when you are an adult, you don't have anxiety anymore. I guess I'm not an adult yet.

I would have liked to see Love/Infatuation as an emotion when Riley is older, like high school age. Your first experiences with crushes and dating is so much different when you have no idea what you’re dealing with, so there’s a lot of potential there. Fear could have even evolved into anxiety, sadness into depression, etc. But that would have been too hard for a legendary billion dollar corporation I guess.

I’m gonna sound like a nerd but, for the record, the ending of the first movie had a boy getting flustered by seeing Riley, not the other way around. However, they later did an Inside Out short called “Riley’s first date” that played around the idea of the two dating.
There’s more proof of that being expanded in the sequel than “liking hockey means they’re this”. But we know barely anything about the sequel so far, so acting like anything is definitely happening is odd.

Imo it would be much better if the emotions started visibly evolving instead of the new emotions popping up. Then you could also hand wave the plot hole of the parents having only 5 OG emotions - maybe they stabilize after the hormones settle.
If you want to add more emotions - I would add something like "self-awarness" and "desire/attraction". The first one could easily disappear after puberty (by merging in with others or becoming ever present but not distracting or some other shit. Maybe self awarness looks like an invasive species in a teen mind instead of a "little human"), and the other only pops up occasionally so that's why it never showed up in other adults.

I seriously hope that if they make an Inside Out 3, that it's all about Riley as a senile old woman with dementia. Joy and Envy died long ago. Sadness, Fear, and Anger only remain as all of the memory marbles are fizzling away. The emotions have no idea what to do so they just keep switching between who's in control every 5 minutes. She's on her deathbed with no hope of recovery as the emotions freak out. Then she dies and everything in the funny muppet mindscape just slowly fades to black. Our 3 remaining emotions accept their fate. I will go to the IMAX Theater to see that.

  • @Theravingranter

Here’s two viable options that they should have done. Option one: New emotion should be integrally tied with puberty and since it is new and no one else has it, it should be a passing emotion because then we can have another oh so sad Bing Bong moment of them fading and the characters being like Oh no I miss the way they annoyed me! It would explain why the other family members don’t have it because it leaves you after you grow up. I want to say lust since puberty and being boy crazy or whatever you are into crazy go together but Disney won’t touch the word lust again so they could call it passion? And since passion/lust is neutral to all parties it could be sooooo brave if they made it a gender neutral emotion.
Option 2: They want to represent anxiety so have the emotions actually go through their own puberty in a way. Fear transforms almost werewolf style into anxiety, joy becomes obsession, sadness becomes depression, disgust becomes jealousy, anger becomes angst. Boom, you got two characters in one, so many toy opportunities!

I like that old boys theory on Riley being bi is based on a one-off visual gag. The dad’s emotions aren’t all male they are all ‘dads’ and same with mom’s being all ‘moms’.

wouldn't it be more interesting for a sequel to be about someone else's emotions anyway

The hockey thing falls apart pretty quick if you live in Minnesota, where girls hockey is incredibly popular and doesn’t carry any “lol that’s a boy sport” connotations
Wait isn’t that where Riley is from, anyway? So she grew up in a place where girls hockey was just, a thing, the same way as girl’s softball or girl’s tennis, but they’re trying to use that as evidence that she’s NB?
Along with her name, which, last I checked, was something her parents gave her?
