Whatever one's opinions are on the original, clearly Inside Out was made with a lot of care, and resonated with a lot of people because of it's themes and messages. It's one of the few pieces of media period that criticizes toxic/forced positivity, and it clearly held a lot of value to director Pete Doctor specifically, especially as he also hails from Minnesota, and shares a lot of anxieties with moving away from all you know to another state entirely. So to have a sequel which has very little of the original creative team actively working on it feels...worrying, in a way. It feels like they're just seeing what kind of content they can mine out of their back catalogue since many of their recent films (while still financially successful) have made audiences feel more weary.
I agree completely you’re absolutely spot on. It reminds me of finding dory. “We need to release a movie we know will do well. I know let’s dust off finding Nemo and make a sequel that’ll sell tickets.” This gives off a very similar vibe.
So the adults in the first movie only had the emotions shown in that movie, so does that mean at some point after puberty, emotions like Anxiety just go away and die? Somehow that doesn’t seem right.
My personal theory is that they've learned how to manage it or possibly don't have the same levels of anxiety as some others do. Hence the existence of anxiety disorders.
I guess I'm not an adult yet! But also, most likely they didn't plan on making more emotions because Fear and Anxiety is basically tied together. They'll probably find a way to show inside the parents' heads in the 2nd movie to retcon the fact they don't have those new emotions in the first movie. Also, new emotions = more toys to sell to kids!

Might be good for a sketch? Honestly, even Inside Out 2 feels like a bit of a stretch, this really does seem like a 'one movie concept' and after the first one it feels like they got just about everything they could out of the premise.
I thought about that very idea before actually, but with Yoshikage Kira from Jojo as a basis because my mom and I were talking about him in a psychological way. Because that's what we like to do over coffee, talk about horrors! Haha! Joy is the main drive but as a negative form in desire and addiction. "Something about killing and dismembering a woman's hand to keep (because that's what he does in the show) is enticing. I want this hand. It makes me feel so good." Disgust and Anger are two prominent emotions. It's literal hatred for himself and others. "It's one thing to admit I have a fetish, but how DARE I have something that's so personal! How DARE these people interrupt my own happiness? How DARE these nails grow so long? I hate it! I want to love these women, but I also HATE women... but I'm not gay because I hate the touch of men!" Which leads to, Fear. "Don't get caught. Don't get caught. Don't get caught. Don't let them know who you are. Keep this charade. If they ever find out, I'm done for. And with good reason. I can't let ANYONE know." The one emotion that doesn't really get brought up a lot is Sadness, but it's still there. Sadness that after you've done what you've done, you can't go back. "I want to live a peaceful life. But I've gone too far. I'm far gone. They will never understand." Basically, we did one big experiment of the inner thoughts of a fictional serial killer.
@@moatrboatthat's such a dumb stereotype. If serial killers didn't have any emotions, they would think like machines and therefore have no reason to kill. It's usually the opposite in fact - they are so messed up mentally their emotions are overwhelming and uncontrollable and they lash out.
I view the original movie as fairly obvious but well done allegory for depression and yet Pixar didn't feel the need to make depression into a character. The addition of a new emotion feels entirely done for marketing reasons, because mental health is topical and everybody needs an Anxiety plushie. Cynical as ever, entirely unsurprising.
To be fair, I dont think the original directors of Inside Out ever expected a sequel to exist, it’s a pretty rounded one-and-done kind of film about growing up, where Sadness works as a moniker for depression and Joy’s acceptance of her is what creates “new” emotional experiences (the memory orbs displaying different colors being the result). The second movie hasnt come out yet so Ill hold my judgements, but it feels like itd work so much better if the core emotions suddenly found a new color on a memory orb, and investigate to discover a “new land of emotions”, that then travel over to the “main controls”, rather than just suddenly appearing out of nowhere. Also, Anxiety is the only “quirky relatable mental illness” character we know of, which is much easier of a concept to display to new audiences than Envy or Ennui. Also, I dont exactly believe addressing mental health in a film about experiencing life thats targeted towards families and adolescents is necessarily a marketing strategy, its just feels like the natural progression of Riley’s character
Part of me is still confused on how Riley's parents still have the same five emotions throughout their whole lives and Riley is just now experiencing new emotions. There should be some sort of in-universe reason for it.
in the poster the new emotions are tucked under the floor, maybe the new emotions are like assistants of the old ones that only appear when warranted. or the hormonal cycle dictates what 5 emotions are the "main" ones every given day.
My speculation is that there will be an end of movie self actualization of some sort where the new emotions merge into the core ones and become part of them. Anxiety slotting into fear and ennui slotting into sadness for example.
The Disney allows mainstream LGBT+ character is the day they break ties with China and Saudi Arabia and acknowledge Kudan. That'll never happen. Edit: Kundun is the film name.
@wesshiflet2214 There was a movie Martin Scorsese directed that focus on the 14th Dalai Lama. China didn't like that and temporarily broke ties with Disney. Disney did everything they could to make up for them later on. Even abandoning Kundun (I meant to say)
They should introduce anthropomorphic germs that also live inside Riley alongside the emotions. Then introduce a drug character that teams up with the emotions and good germs to help fight the bad germs. Bill Murray could be in it.
this movie's gonna be about anxiety attacks isn't it? riley's gonna have panic attacks at school or something and there's gonna be an arc about learning to take care of your mental health or something, which isn't a bad thing but it's soooo predictable if that's the route they chose
What I really hate about these new characters is how they mess up the dynamic Pixar had with the original emotions to convey emotions we feel in real life. Riley's turmoil in the first film, had it been handled in the way it seems like Inside Out 2 is going to go, would involve a sixth emotion being responsible for everything. But because they kept it as simply being a result of how the base five emotions work, it presents emotional hardship in a way that is both a lot more realistic and a lot more helpful: the vast majority of the things we feel are just results of our base emotions, just made more complicated over time. For example, anxiety is not a new emotion, it is a combination of fear, sadness, and anger. It's simply an extension of the fear we already feel with the intricacy of our life as we get older. The way Inside Out 2 seems to be going is foregoing creative use of the original five emotions for the sake of introducing new marketable characters that are "relatable". While I don't normally mind cynical things like that in media, what annoys me so much about it is that I think it's going to complicate the way they explain these feelings instead of making it simpler, which, in my opinion, is not a good way to tackle it for those who suffer from them.
They use the emotions in the parents to prove a theory, but they are going to introduce new emotions in this second movie. Emotions the parents don't have, like anxiety. Those emotions in the parents' head were just a joke. All the characters having mustaches or long hair was a really easy way to just reuse models. If we take everything literally, then they would be implying that when you are an adult, you don't have anxiety anymore. I guess I'm not an adult yet.
I would have liked to see Love/Infatuation as an emotion when Riley is older, like high school age. Your first experiences with crushes and dating is so much different when you have no idea what you’re dealing with, so there’s a lot of potential there. Fear could have even evolved into anxiety, sadness into depression, etc. But that would have been too hard for a legendary billion dollar corporation I guess.
I’m gonna sound like a nerd but, for the record, the ending of the first movie had a boy getting flustered by seeing Riley, not the other way around. However, they later did an Inside Out short called “Riley’s first date” that played around the idea of the two dating. There’s more proof of that being expanded in the sequel than “liking hockey means they’re this”. But we know barely anything about the sequel so far, so acting like anything is definitely happening is odd.
I saw the short. Riley was going out to the hockey rink with some boy her age and her parents just assumed that she was dating him. It's revealed that Riley never saw him that way and that he was just a friend.
Didn't Riley have an imaginary boyfriend in the first movie? Didn't Riley develop a new iland about "amo vampires" to make fun of Twilight in the first movie? What are these people talking about?
I think it’s fair to say that DreamWorls has a better track record with sequels and follow-up films than Pixar does. That’s One point for them, I guess.
The fact that they have anxiety when panic or whatever the purple guy is, is RIGHT THERE and does the same fucking thing. Like his whole shtick throughout the entire first movie is "haha look at this guy hes a nervous wreck".
I hope that the plot isn’t going to be that the new emotions need to be accepted and embraced by Joy. Like in the first movie where Joy had to learn to let Sadness take the wheel for Riley’s good
5:30 Stranger Things, Maya Hawke, the one who played the LGBT ice cream employee and friend with Steve Harrington is voicing Anxiety so that’s why she is curious of being lesbian. That’s the purpose of Inside Out 2. More feelings to combine isn’t enough.
@@gaiusjuliuscaesar8450 No, because the end of the movie unironically does this gag with multiple things and the 5 core emotions are consistent. Like we even see that Dogs and Cats have these 5 exact emotions, they just act differently because animal. So if we're supposed to take this even remotely seriously, that means Riley is SPECIFICALLY the odd one out here for having more than 5 core emotions, lol!
I never understood why other characters emotions look like their person, it’s always bothered me because even other kids have emotions that match their hair and fashion style, I know Riley is the main character and we see her emotions more so when need them to look and sound more diverse but I need something to make it more cohesive and make sense, what the rules and what needs to happen to make emotions look like their person I like Inside Out, but the lack off cohesion of how the emotions work and look, especially at the end, will never not irritate me
Anxiety seems like a weird emotion to add when fear is already there and kinda embodied anxiety in the first movie and arguably kinda the same sort of thing
We all know anxiety doesn't make sense as a new emotion, it's just hip with the kids And I'm pretty sure her emotions having different genders while everyone else's emotions are the same gender as they are is because the creators were lazy
Imo it would be much better if the emotions started visibly evolving instead of the new emotions popping up. Then you could also hand wave the plot hole of the parents having only 5 OG emotions - maybe they stabilize after the hormones settle. If you want to add more emotions - I would add something like "self-awarness" and "desire/attraction". The first one could easily disappear after puberty (by merging in with others or becoming ever present but not distracting or some other shit. Maybe self awarness looks like an invasive species in a teen mind instead of a "little human"), and the other only pops up occasionally so that's why it never showed up in other adults. Idk, creativity??
So if you don’t dance or do cheerleading as a girl then you’re not a girl?? Gotta love how the people who scream about gender roles the most are the ones who adhere so strictly to them
I seriously hope that if they make an Inside Out 3, that it's all about Riley as a senile old woman with dementia. Joy and Envy died long ago. Sadness, Fear, and Anger only remain as all of the memory marbles are fizzling away. The emotions have no idea what to do so they just keep switching between who's in control every 5 minutes. She's on her deathbed with no hope of recovery as the emotions freak out. Then she dies and everything in the funny muppet mindscape just slowly fades to black. Our 3 remaining emotions accept their fate. I will go to the IMAX Theater to see that.
call this a nit-pick. I'm kinda bothered that they're now introducing secondary emotions in this movie as riley now enters adolescence, because why didn't the parents have secondary emotions in the first movie?
I know this could be kinda nitpicky, but it feels weird to imply puberty brings about new emotions when her parents were never shown having additional emotions compared to her...
I find it frustrating that my family thought the puberty joke at the end was a setup for a sequel and I’m like “no, it’s just a gag it’s not that deep.” And here we are
Here’s two viable options that they should have done. Option one: New emotion should be integrally tied with puberty and since it is new and no one else has it, it should be a passing emotion because then we can have another oh so sad Bing Bong moment of them fading and the characters being like Oh no I miss the way they annoyed me! It would explain why the other family members don’t have it because it leaves you after you grow up. I want to say lust since puberty and being boy crazy or whatever you are into crazy go together but Disney won’t touch the word lust again so they could call it passion? And since passion/lust is neutral to all parties it could be sooooo brave if they made it a gender neutral emotion. Option 2: They want to represent anxiety so have the emotions actually go through their own puberty in a way. Fear transforms almost werewolf style into anxiety, joy becomes obsession, sadness becomes depression, disgust becomes jealousy, anger becomes angst. Boom, you got two characters in one, so many toy opportunities!
Knowing the concept art of other emotions and different body shapes and shape language in general I'm pretty pissed they went with my least favorite design ever for anxiety/anxiousness????? This gives the same feeling from the one Instagram artist who tried to make 'human gajinkas' of bipolar and schizophrenia like girl please😅 After Puss in Hoots animated a panic attack now every movie studio wants to and that shit is lowkey annoying after because I go to my cinema to commit escapism not have reality back in my face!!!!🎉
10:44 it feels Pixar doing to be far out more explained since Finding Dory already done with Nemo instead just put Dory and repeats it all over again in aquarium story, Incredibles 2 just puts Elastigirl more focus than having a family buildup and let Mr Mom, Mr. Incredible to be miserable of taking care to much kids instead of having a big follow up of being grown up, and Toy Story 4 just continues and let Woody, to be driven and let go of being a loyal toy. It feels like Pixar wanted to brand the Pixar franchise to be simple basic plot but all over again since their classic debuts.
If the movie doesn't end with the 5 emotions killing anxiety with hammers then what kind of message Pixar will send to the kids? That "having anxiety is ok" or "you should love your anxiety"?
I mean, anxiety is pretty common so it’s probably just going to be similar to sadness. It’ll always be a part of your life probably but you need to manage it in moderation with your other emotions
I mean having anxiety is okay and it doesn't make you less of a person. You don't have to love your anxiety but you can find ways to control or monitor it. Me who suffers from anxiety and panic attacks.

I like that old boys theory on Riley being bi is based on a one-off visual gag. The dad’s emotions aren’t all male they are all ‘dads’ and same with mom’s being all ‘moms’.
The hockey thing falls apart pretty quick if you live in Minnesota, where girls hockey is incredibly popular and doesn’t carry any “lol that’s a boy sport” connotations Wait isn’t that where Riley is from, anyway?
You might be overanalyzing.
@@sephy26946 Well you’re no fun. What can a person not theorize whether sentient emotions inside people have souls and die of old age at different stages of the person’s life?

Dig the implication that you can't feel anxiety until you enter puberty.

Would be interesting to make a movie about a serial killer in the inside out universe. To see the characters in that mind 😂
Might be good for a sketch? Honestly, even Inside Out 2 feels like a bit of a stretch, this really does seem like a 'one movie concept' and after the first one it feels like they got just about everything they could out of the premise.
there likely wouldn't be any
I thought about that very idea before actually, but with Yoshikage Kira from Jojo as a basis because my mom and I were talking about him in a psychological way. Because that's what we like to do over coffee, talk about horrors! Haha!
Joy is the main drive but as a negative form in desire and addiction. "Something about killing and dismembering a woman's hand to keep (because that's what he does in the show) is enticing. I want this hand. It makes me feel so good."
Disgust and Anger are two prominent emotions. It's literal hatred for himself and others. "It's one thing to admit I have a fetish, but how DARE I have something that's so personal! How DARE these people interrupt my own happiness? How DARE these nails grow so long? I hate it! I want to love these women, but I also HATE women... but I'm not gay because I hate the touch of men!" Which leads to,
Fear. "Don't get caught. Don't get caught. Don't get caught. Don't let them know who you are. Keep this charade. If they ever find out, I'm done for. And with good reason. I can't let ANYONE know."
The one emotion that doesn't really get brought up a lot is Sadness, but it's still there. Sadness that after you've done what you've done, you can't go back. "I want to live a peaceful life. But I've gone too far. I'm far gone. They will never understand."
Basically, we did one big experiment of the inner thoughts of a fictional serial killer.
It's just Horniness and Anger dancing in a circle in front of the panel 😭
@@moatrboatthat's such a dumb stereotype. If serial killers didn't have any emotions, they would think like machines and therefore have no reason to kill. It's usually the opposite in fact - they are so messed up mentally their emotions are overwhelming and uncontrollable and they lash out.
0:43 I hope Pixar’s marketing team takes Adams “Thank you Pixar” and puts it in a reaction compilation
Depression is not an emotion tho
Why does it have to be so ugly
Psh I'm still gonna buy the plushie tho
@@grAnita- That's the point. They didn't need to have a depression-emotion to show off depression.

Inside Out 5. They will introduce trepidation as a "new emotion".
Part of me is still confused on how Riley's parents still have the same five emotions throughout their whole lives and Riley is just now experiencing new emotions. There should be some sort of in-universe reason for it.
“ThEy wErE in tHe bAcK beCAuSe adUlTs coNTRol thEiR EmoTIOns bEtTeR.” Or something. Inside Out really didn’t need a sequel.
It was just a sight gag bouncing off of the main concept. Don't overthink it.
in the poster the new emotions are tucked under the floor, maybe the new emotions are like assistants of the old ones that only appear when warranted. or the hormonal cycle dictates what 5 emotions are the "main" ones every given day.
The new ones were all in the bathroom hooking up
My speculation is that there will be an end of movie self actualization of some sort where the new emotions merge into the core ones and become part of them. Anxiety slotting into fear and ennui slotting into sadness for example.
The Disney allows mainstream LGBT+ character is the day they break ties with China and Saudi Arabia and acknowledge Kudan. That'll never happen.
Edit: Kundun is the film name.
One of the main characters in strange world was openly gay
Kudan, the prophecy beast…? Who are you talking about
@becuaseimbored3481 Yeah and there wasn't any ads for it until it showed up on Disney +.
@wesshiflet2214 There was a movie Martin Scorsese directed that focus on the 14th Dalai Lama. China didn't like that and temporarily broke ties with Disney. Disney did everything they could to make up for them later on. Even abandoning Kundun (I meant to say)
@@X_Blake Martin Scorsese sucked off the Dalai Lama? That’s disappointing
Anxiety’s design makes me think Justin Roiland worked at Pixar right before he got cancelled
it's just Pepe King Prawn in a Pixar filter
Anxiety looks like gaggle simpson.
You know what? There should actually be a "Horny" emotion that is just a tiny dog that humps everything he sees, and Adam Sandler should voice it.
Adum being so genuinely appreciative and happy about the 4K upload makes all his ranting worth it. This arc has been built up and paid off perfectly.
It's a miracle! Pixar uploaded the trailer in 4K!
I'm so happy Nick Mullen once again is an animated character in this.
Go on speak a little chineae
I love that the stupid speculation video called the child herself “Inside out” like that was her name
I can't believe they added Freggley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid, its the crossover I've always wanted !
Inside Out 2: Feeling Everything Everywhere All At Once
12:32 In Inside Out, Riley and her family first live in Minnesota, a state that many people call "Canada Lite" so, kinda.
Like in the first movie where Joy had to learn to let Sadness take the wheel for Riley’s good
I guarantee you that Riley's emotions are mixed only because it's more marketable and a better dynamic for the story.
Shouldn't the new emotion be Love? It's not an extension of the other emotions like Anxiety clearly is of Fear.
Good to see Nick Mullen back in the sequel
Wait a second, at the end of the first one it showed the emotions of the mom and dad but there were no more extra emotions in there
Continuity? What’s that?
Which would suggest that her parents don't show any emotions besides the original 5, like anxiety... That's so stupid.
Does this imply the parents never made it past emotional toddlerhood?
@@gaiusjuliuscaesar8450 No, because the end of the movie unironically does this gag with multiple things and the 5 core emotions are consistent. Like we even see that Dogs and Cats have these 5 exact emotions, they just act differently because animal. So if we're supposed to take this even remotely seriously, that means Riley is SPECIFICALLY the odd one out here for having more than 5 core emotions, lol!
I never understood why other characters emotions look like their person, it’s always bothered me because even other kids have emotions that match their hair and fashion style, I know Riley is the main character and we see her emotions more so when need them to look and sound more diverse but I need something to make it more cohesive and make sense, what the rules and what needs to happen to make emotions look like their person
I like Inside Out, but the lack off cohesion of how the emotions work and look, especially at the end, will never not irritate me
The first movie had the main character going through Anxiety to the point of running away from home. Where were they then?
Anxiety seems like a weird emotion to add when fear is already there and kinda embodied anxiety in the first movie and arguably kinda the same sort of thing
We all know anxiety doesn't make sense as a new emotion, it's just hip with the kids
And I'm pretty sure her emotions having different genders while everyone else's emotions are the same gender as they are is because the creators were lazy
Gotta love how the people who scream about gender roles the most are the ones who adhere so strictly to them
It's so stupid. There's a perfectly valid reason for her being into hockey, because both of Riley's parents are into hockey
Adum has watched the “We’re Not Candy” PSA
So?
glad to finally have the confirmation that Adum has, in fact, seen 'this is serious, we could make you delirious'
0:52 Adum’s problem against of Disney or Pixar not bringing 4K has finally ended.
Thank you Pixar for bringing 4K quality.
See now he’s happy.
I'm kinda bothered that they're now introducing secondary emotions in this movie as riley now enters adolescence, because why didn't the parents have secondary emotions in the first movie?
they were just in the next room, being anxious and horny
I know this could be kinda nitpicky, but it feels weird to imply puberty brings about new emotions when her parents were never shown having additional emotions compared to her...
I find it frustrating that my family thought the puberty joke at the end was a setup for a sequel and I’m like “no, it’s just a gag it’s not that deep.” And here we are
The only thing that can save this movie is if when Riley learns swear words, Anger starts talking like the real Lewis Black.
All the new emotions were on lunch break in every adult pov in the last movie
No, Mindy Kaling is not returning. Bill Hader isn’t back either.
Shame about Bill Hader not coming back. THANK GOD Mindy isn't coming back.
Knowing the concept art of other emotions and different body shapes and shape language in general I'm pretty pissed they went with my least favorite design ever for anxiety/anxiousness?????
This gives the same feeling from the one Instagram artist who tried to make 'human gajinkas' of bipolar and schizophrenia like girl please😅
After Puss in Hoots animated a panic attack now every movie studio wants to and that shit is lowkey annoying after because I go to my cinema to commit escapism not have reality back in my face!!!!🎉

The only new emotion that would make sense is Attraction or something. Maybe that emotion isnt in the Head until the love interest is around and the moment calls for it, hence why we dont see that emotion in the parent's heads. We only see their heads when theyre talking to Riley and bickering. That emotion would make a decent antagonist type, that makes Riley act odd and maybe cause situations where Riley is upset.

I do like how it's building off the concepts the original had, but I feel like the set up of all these emotions being in one big building FROM those concepts would have left less plot holes about these new emotions showing up if they were going to do it, since we havent seen them in other people's heads
My main question is why no one was on dream duty when the puberty incident happened?
It sucks Bill Hader is not coming back. Mindy Kaling is thankfully not coming back. Apparently they left much like Neve Campbell left the Scream series. The money they were offered was too low compared to Amy Poehler being $5 million. They were both offered $100,000. For Bill, that's too low. For Mindy, that's too high.
I like that old boys theory on Riley being bi is based on a one-off visual gag. The dad’s emotions aren’t all male they are all ‘dads’ and same with mom’s being all ‘moms’.

wouldn't it be more interesting for a sequel to be about someone else's emotions anyway
The hockey thing falls apart pretty quick if you live in Minnesota, where girls hockey is incredibly popular and doesn’t carry any “lol that’s a boy sport” connotations
Wait isn’t that where Riley is from, anyway? So she grew up in a place where girls hockey was just, a thing, the same way as girl’s softball or girl’s tennis, but they’re trying to use that as evidence that she’s NB?
