Loved the reaction. I watched Cinema therapy react to this movie on TH-cam, and they explained this movie so eloquently. Joy was really reinforcing toxic positivity and wasn't allowing Riley to feel sad. Moving away from the home you've grown up in, away from friends, and family is supposed to be sad. When they reacted to it, they mentioned the passing of one of their mothers and how all the good memories they had of their mom were painted blue. I cry every time I watch this movie. Sadness clearly controls my emotions lol!
First time I watched this movie I remember being so annoyed at sadness only to realize as I got older that what she was doing was necessary. And Joy could learn from her
bryce 🥺 i feel the same every time i rewatch watch inside out.. i like how at the end you guys caught onto how sadness didn’t know why but she just felt the need to touch the memories, sometimes we need to accept sadness and let it be- sorta like standing in the rain and feeling the drops on our skin, appreciating the rain as it is here right now. we don’t know exactly when the rain will pass but what we do know is that it will pass at some point and that the weather changes, the sun and rainbow will slowly peek through the clouds & the birds will sing again
Man bing bong gets me every time. No matter how many times I’ve seen it. Losing childhood innocence is so sad. It happens to all of us, at different times of course, but it’s a scene everyone can relate to ❤ as always I love your genuine reactions
Fun fact: in Japan, the broccoli scene was change to - I believe green peppers - because broccoli is a huge part of Japanese cuisine and they didn't want to confuse or upset the kids.
It was changed around the world to better represent every culture. Not just Japan. It was changed to multiple different vegetables for different markets.
There's one moment in Inside Out that never fails to make me sob. It's instantaneous like flicking on a light switch. It's when Riley is being held by her parents at the end, and there's a zoom in on her face. When she sighs out in relief from being in her parents' arms--I just can't help but cry. It's such a satisfying release of so much pain and the realization of finding safety and love.
I remember taking my niece to see this in the theater. I thought it was just gonna be a cute little movie. All the adults were sobbing ugly cries. No one expected to feel all that before 3pm on a weekday lol
13:29 : Sadness being the mum's mental leader does not mean the mother is sad. Sadness is not just for the sake of being sad , it allows people to feel empathy and to try and help people get better during rough times.
"Sadness caused this" well actually, the whole chaos was caused when Joy didn't accept Sadness as a "valid" emotion. Core memories being sad isn't a bad thing, you actually learn from these just as much as you learn from joyful moments. Idk, imagine if Riley has a pet who dies. It'd create a sad core memory. What if one of her parents dies? (yknow like in a lot of Disney movie) What if Riley gets a boyfriend and they break up? Probably other sad core memories. As long as you're human, you're bond to know sadness in your life. In big moments as well. And it's actually what makes these memories beautiful, they're Sad because they were Joyful. It's why the Joyful memories turn sad, they're "merging" with a new sadness that occurs with the loss of everything that was familiar to Riley. She's sad when thinking about her best-friend because she lost her, while also still having the Joy of having had her as a friend. She's sad when thinking about her beautiful childhood in her childhood home, because she's lost that part of her life. The same way Joy follows Sadness because you recover, Sadness follows Joy when you lose something/someone, it's all part of a symbiosis that we gotta deal with. Joy not accepting and not allowing Riley to be sad is actually what caused the whole problem. And since we gotta believe that the emotions inside Riley are actually Riley... well it's all that Riley didn't allow herself to properly and normally express her emotions, so she lost touch with them.
The emotions evolved as they grow. Like sadness is needed to feel empathy, which was the one in charge of the mum as she is the empathetic one in the family. Anger could evolve into something more protective, ambitious, or confidence like the dad.
The emotions I feel during this movie is everything and more. Such a powerful, amazing and breathing animated movie. So glad you felt it and liked it. :)
This movie does a great job of representing how our emotions really work. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust really are the five emotions that current psychology has identified as the core emotions. Everything else is some combination, or permutation of those five, as far as we know. The movie does a great job of illustrating how Joy really isn't the centerpiece of everything, no matter how much it tries to be. The whole ordeal in the movie was not caused by Sadness touching core memories. It was caused by Joy trying to control everything, and acting like she was more important than the others. Joy is actually quite selfish, controlling, and ignorant. Sadness helps us connect to people and things around us, while Joy is more internally focused. I kinda wish we got to see more from Anger, Fear and Disgust, though.
It's funny that everybody hates and blames sadness at first but then everybody cheers for her and agree that she's needed :) Also: emotions can evolve in time and be more complex as we grow up, and so mom's sadness, being in charge, is rather empathy Also also: mixing emotions can create other emotions, like joy and fear may be excitement (like "a good stress")
A really cool fact I learned about this, is a lot of family therapists and special needs teachers recommend this movie to parents so kids who have a harder time with their emotions are able to contextualize them better. This movie has helped a lot of people outside of being a really good Disney movie, which is just incredible to see.
Sadness didn't cause it. Joy caused it by suppressing sadness. We need to be able to feel all the emotions we have...if we bottle them up (put them in a circle) bad things happen.
I never lived a bad life when growing up, but still had that dramatic "I want to run away" thought when I found something unfair. Having said that, YES a bawled my eyes out when Riley came back home and had a talk with her family about how hard she's been taking this drastic change in her life.
This movie is a masterpiece so creative I never thought a bunch of animate characters would break me like this film when I first watched it I was sobbing Pixar never fails to disappoint me at the very least they push the boundary of how stories are told also sending you a virtual hug Bryce this movie gets me too love the reaction
Use of Spanish to English translator. It is very difficult for a girl to leave everything behind, I have moved 23 times in 19 years and until recently I did not know that there was a period of mourning for this reason, this film validates everything I felt in my first few times moving houses.
❤❤❤ I can’t imagine what it’s like to move that many times, that early in life. I’ve only moved a few times in childhood & it was hard every time. I hope you are rebuilding and have a beautiful life/home, wherever you are now 🏠 💗
Like you, I changed schools 15 times before graduating from high school. I felt like I was always saying goodbye and forced to make new friends, before I ever had time to settle in. It was really difficult, and this movie took me right back into those feelings. Makes me cry every time.

Even just seeing how joy was rileys first emotion always gets to me, because it's not always like that. Just such a great movie, I cry everytime bingbong says "take her to the moon for me". Never changes, no matter how often I watch it😭
Movie gets me every time. One of the Disney movies that always have me crying no matter how many times I watch it, along with Big Hero 6 and Fox and the Hound.
I think each emotion character manages more than one emotion as the person ages. Like, they had to limit the number of characters for the movie, but there are other emotions the characters have to make Riley express. Empathy is part of sadness, anxiety comes from fear, and jealousy probably falls under anger or disgust.
I thought of shame during the movie. It didn't appear but from an early age we experience it. It doesn't seem to be a core emotion, so it's probably a mix of sadness and disgust and maybe even fear...
There are novelizations from the POVs of each of the emotions, and it really drives home that Sadness is as much Riley's protector as the others are. Apparently, when she popped into existence right after Riley was born, her immediate thought was "Holy cow, this world is loud and bright and cold, and if I don't tell this girl's parents, they won't get her a blanket!"
I love the way this movie explained the struggle of kids growing into their emotions as they get older. It’s useful for parents to help their kids understand what’s going on 😢😢😢 as a new mother THANK YOU DISNEY ❤
Sadness was drawn to the core memories because Riley was sad to be leaving her old life behind and all the memories that made her *her* but because she believed her parents needed her to be happy, Joy kept overshadowing Sadness and wouldn't let Riley feel what she needed to feel. Riley was literally forcing herself to feel happy until she couldn't feel *anything*. It's a very good depiction of depression. It's also worth noting that the only emotion who has a mixed color scheme is Joy. Her hair is blue to depict sadness because you can't feel joy without feeling sadness.
No matter how many times I watch this movie I always cry at bing-bongs death and then the "pray for bryce" killed me , I was laughing so hard , thus is one of my favorite movies, especially once I figurednout that the moral of the story was "without sadness there is no true happiness" I can't wait for the second movie
I love how this movie portrays sadness as essential. emotions like compassion are only capable because of sadness. This movie taught me really good lessons.
You know, the reason Bing-Bong couldn't read is because he was created when Riley was 3 years old, during her pre-school years. That is also why he got so upset when the mind workers started demolishing parts of Imagination Land that represented that early childhood of hers. He is basically the embodiment of Riley's early childhood and, when he faded away in the Dump, along with all the memories of Riley's early years, that was basically the movie telling Riley was growing up and she no longer needed them.
Riley's Mom was controlled by sad because she also had to leave her friends and comfort of Minnesota. Riley's mom's sadness came out as persuasive denial where she tries to be happy and also the fleeting thoughts of why did she choose marry Riley's dad. Riley's dad was controlled by anger because his work had to uproot his happy family and on top of it the move wasn't going easy because he had to be called in early and the moving boxes were late (should have moved those things before the family got there or before the big work deadline). His anger came out as standoffish withdrawal from the family and comforting himself by thinking about hockey, where he would usually be more interactive with Riley.
I love this movie so much. Think about it - we all feel sad watching this, many or most of us crying. But in that sadness, we find connection to each other, a feeling of being understood, and we come to better understand our own emotions by playing with the ideas in a creative way. You chose to be sad by watching this after being warned it would be this way and I chose to be sad by watching this video. And we're both better off for it. Also, I love that the mom's dominant emotion is sadness because I think that makes for a very empathetic person- her deeper understanding of what it means to be sad enables her to better help others navigate their own sadness which might not be as familiar. It's just such a beautiful movie.
I love this movie so much! It clearly is much different than many others. At first glance, it appears that the objective is to keep Riley happy, when in reality is the opposite. Riley needed to be sad... because she was sad. You're right, Sadness was changing the memories because they were happy memories that reminded Riley of her previous home, memories that she could no longer remember with the same joy she used to. It also served to show that toxic positivity is a thing. Despite doing it unknowingly, Joy was responsible for everything. She was acting like a control freek, always wanting to be in charge because she was the only one that could make Riley happy. However, she neglected to see the importance of Sadness and kept doing everything she could to keep her from being in control. But we got to see Sadness' real role in Riley's mind, as she is the one that can help Riley to tell others she needs help, besides allowing her to feel empathy for others. It also showed how different emotions work with each other in kids and adults. While with kids emotions run wild and are always competing with each other to get control, with adults they work together and the way they do it is a reflection of their personality: with Mom, Sadness is in control, reflecting her more compassive and empathic side; meanwhile, with Dad, Anger is in control, reflecting his authority as a parent.
"Despite doing it unknowingly, Joy was responsible for everything." Reminded me of the theory that this is why the move to San Francisco seemed to come out of nowhere. There's no way Riley could've missed that. Her parents must have told her. She must've seen them start packing. But Joy convinced Riley that it wasn't a big deal; that maybe it was just a short trip, they'd be back, etc. Joy was responsible for Riley not processing or coping with this reality.
34:16 my favorite “Ackchyually” to force on people: tear ducts don’t produce tears. They drain tears into the nasal cavity. Which is why your nose runs when you cry. ** The More You Know ** 😉
I didn’t realize this until I rewatched it as an adult but I think Riley was depressed. That’s why Sadness felt the need to take over. Also I cry with Bryce in all of these lol
i cried in the middle of sophomore year health class during this movie. everyone saw and my friends had to comfort me. what i’m trying to say is it’s okay bryce, lol. we’re all there with you
i love that you guys arent against crying or openly having emotions. its definitely the bare minimum from other men but its definitely fresh and nice to see.
I think it was Cinema Therapy who talked more in depth about the parents' lead emotions, they said that with the mom, Sadness as the lead evolved into empathy and with the dad, Amger matured to strength. I love that interpretation! Also, the first trailer for this movie's sequel recently came out and there will in fact be new emotions joining the crew, most prominently Anxiety, it's gonna be very interesting to see how that turns out
I find it very interesting that from all the headquarters we see that only Rileys seems to have a mix of male and female emotions. All the other characters have one or the other.
Maybe it’s combination of one’s journey and how many feminine/masculine traits you have. Riley’s dad seems to be more “masculine” and his leader is anger, while Riley’s mom has Anger at the forefront. Riley seems to be in a place where she shares both traits of her parents and also has Joy as her leader. Idk though, that might not hold. It could just be random as well. Or the emotions could be genderless and change as their ‘person’ grows..?
I have a low opinion of Disney/Pixar these days but this movie is still a banger and I love every minute of it. The broccoli scene - I learned later that they filmed different foods for different country releases for what Riley was going to be disgusted by, which I thought was pretty funny. Funnier than the scene itself. Psychology courses have used this film to discuss emotional growth among other topics too, I think. A lot of kids can identify with her, being uprooted, losing friends, losing connections, trying to rebuild with parents who have their own lives that take up their limited time and thoughts.. Riley feeling like she's misunderstood and ignored...the bus scene always makes me tear up..
I moved countries 4 times in my life so maybe I'm used to it but I always managed very well until recently. This last move really caught me off guard so now I can definitely relate.
i wanted to add onto your comments about how other emotions other than joy eventually take the lead. you're right saying that as a kid the emotions are black and white and all you really know is being happy or sad. emotions are much more complex than that and as we get older, we discover new ones. for riley's mom, even though her leading emotion is sadness, it may be because it represents being empathetic, caring, and understanding. riley's father's leading emotion was anger but that also represents confidence, determination, and maybe even a protector. of course its the most stereotypical description of two parents but since its disney its a good representation of how complex emotions are to children. the headquarters for each head also looks different according to their personalities. rileys mom was kind of like a theater stage, the dads was a control room, the boy that riley bumps into looked like a gaming room and rileys was kind of like a spaceship. also i was hoping you guys would mention the control panel graying out. you said it was because riley was beginning to feel numb but it was also a small peak into what depression was in rileys head. they couldnt make her feel anything. kids may not be able to process emotions yet but it helps give them an understanding of what they are. my little cousin walked in on me crying once and he asked me "are you blue?" great movie
One of the best things about this movie is how it distinguishes sadness from depression (the board going grey, feeling nothing)… it’s super emotional, there’s no time I’ve watched it and not cried, even when I watch reactions… sending love and good energy to all of you 🤍 Edit: I think what makes Sadness important in this concept is empathy… Joy actually said “they all came to help because of sadness” which is feeling sad about someone else, so empathy… and I believe that’s also why mum has sadness as the leading emotion
I moved many times, I moved to different cities every two years so I had to change schools too. It was very difficult for me to open up, to regain new friends all over again, I understand Riley and why she was frustrated, that's why till this day I hate any kind of change but this movie for sure has helped me to understand many things about myself growing up.
Theres so many details to this movie like you mentioned in the beginning joys hair is blue because you cant have joy without sadness but you can have sadness without joy. and if multiple emotions work together it can become a new emotion for example, fear and sadness = anxiety, disgust anger and fear = jealousy, sadness and joy = nostalgia, fear and joy = anticipation, joy and anger = betrayal, i could go on but i think you get the point they are like primary colours that you can mix together to get new colours but for emotions
I always wished the film ended with a flash forward where Riley is an adult and an astronaut on the moon. Then she faintly hears Bing Bong’s song off in the distant.
Joy - Amy Poehler Fear - Bill Hader Anger - Lewis Black Disgust - Mindy Kaling Sadness - Phyllis Smith Bing Bong - Richard Kind Riley - Kaitlyn Dias Mom - Diane Lane Dad - Kyle MacLachlan
32:31 Sadness was making good choices all along. she was doing her job. The child was moved away from a happy home. it's sadness' job to respond accordingly and cry about it.
no joy no sad : thats just the start of depression .. then the personalities are crumbling one by one because there is nothing else to be happy about .. always to put joy on every thing is toxic ,, riley needs to be allowed to access her other emotions ,, to understand what she feels .. and its okay to be sad when she needs to be sad .. only then she can understand again what joy is and how its differs from sad and other emotions .. this movie hits home really hard because i watched it just a year after i was started feeling depressed and started going on counseling .. but it helps me a lot to understand more whats been happening to me during those dark periods ..

Don't always expect animation to be just about shits and giggles for the sake of it.
13:29 : Sadness being the mum's mental leader does not mean the mother is sad. Sadness is not just for the sake of being sad , it allows people to feel empathy and to try and help people get better during rough times.
"There's gotta be an anxiety one" prophetic! XD
And since we gotta believe that the emotions inside Riley are actually Riley... well it's all that Riley didn't allow herself to properly and normally express her emotions, so she lost touch with them.
exactly
The emotions evolved as they grow. Like sadness is needed to feel empathy, which was the one in charge of the mum as she is the empathetic one in the family. Anger could evolve into something more protective, ambitious, or confidence like the dad.
“pray for bryce”😂😂😂 that was so random and so funny
Maybe they’ll make a 2nd movie that addresses them in more detail.
It's funny you mention anxiety....
The second one was EPIC
It's funny that everybody hates and blames sadness at first but then everybody cheers for her and agree that she's needed :)
Also: emotions can evolve in time and be more complex as we grow up, and so mom's sadness, being in charge, is rather empathy
Also also: mixing emotions can create other emotions, like joy and fear may be excitement (like "a good stress")
Just like joy felt at the end 😢😮 she eventually felt sadness presence and felt that she was needed I guess
It's official. Bryce has the highest emotional intelligence in this trio

I hope you are rebuilding and have a beautiful life/home, wherever you are now 🏠 💗
@@ambriaashley3383 In fact, I have to move in a week, but now I have tools to cope much better, thank you for your sweet words.
Like you, I changed schools 15 times before graduating from high school. I felt like I was always saying goodbye and forced to make new friends, before I ever had time to settle in. It was really difficult, and this movie took me right back into those feelings. Makes me cry every time.
@@melcompton7866 It is like that, it is a type of pain that is greatly minimized, around me they told me that I had to be happy to learn new things, but I only wanted to stay in a stable place and plant roots, I hope you are in a much more stable situation now and be happy and at peace.
6:12 Ah. Beautiful foreshadow.
YOU GUYS HAVE TO REACT TO INSIDE OUT 2 WHEN IT'S AVAILABLE TO STREAM
Frr
There are novelizations from the POVs of each of the emotions, and it really drives home that Sadness is as much Riley's protector as the others are. Apparently, when she popped into existence right after Riley was born, her immediate thought was "Holy cow, this world is loud and bright and cold, and if I don't tell this girl's parents, they won't get her a blanket!"
I remember that I had the novel, I don’t know what happened to it since it’s been years that I read it.
42:38 I'm dying at how perfectly y'alls "Boy? Boy, boy, boy" lined up to be followed by the "GIRL, GIRL, GIRL" immediately after 😂😂
I love the way this movie explained the struggle of kids growing into their emotions as they get older.
I was so choked up and then laughed so hard at “pray for Bryce” that I had a coughing fit 😂
i literally cry at the bing bong scene every time even when watching reactions it always gets me lmfaooo
me too!😢
same i'm so sad
"I'm just scared of the dark & everything else" 🤣🤣 same Zuff, same
I love this movie so much.
I swear Bryce is a sweetheart! Dude I totally feel ya. It's nice seeing a man not hide his emotions. Great reaction guys!
"Pray for Bryce" SENT me
I love this movie so much!
"Despite doing it unknowingly, Joy was responsible for everything."
Reminded me of the theory that this is why the move to San Francisco seemed to come out of nowhere.
“Anti sea bear circle” absolutely sent me, literally crying laughing.
The “pray for Bryce” was so foul 😂😂
“All she can feel is fear, anger, and disgust”
I felt called out a lil bit ngl
“They’re not people, they’re her emotions”
“Yeah, but what would they see?”
Really spoiling us with the amount of videos and stellar movie choices.
Y’all so out of pocket for the pray for Bryce 😂
Bing Bong's "take her to the moon for me" always makes me cry.
Haven't watched yet, but fully know I am going to cry.
I moved countries 4 times in my life so maybe I'm used to it but I always managed very well until recently. This last move really caught me off guard so now I can definitely relate.
Ratatouille and Inside Out are my favorite Pixar films but this one alone also gets me emotional like that.
i wanted to add onto your comments about how other emotions other than joy eventually take the lead. you're right saying that as a kid the emotions are black and white and all you really know is being happy or sad. emotions are much more complex than that and as we get older, we discover new ones. for riley's mom, even though her leading emotion is sadness, it may be because it represents being empathetic, caring, and understanding. riley's father's leading emotion was anger but that also represents confidence, determination, and maybe even a protector. of course its the most stereotypical description of two parents but since its disney its a good representation of how complex emotions are to children. the headquarters for each head also looks different according to their personalities. rileys mom was kind of like a theater stage, the dads was a control room, the boy that riley bumps into looked like a gaming room and rileys was kind of like a spaceship. also i was hoping you guys would mention the control panel graying out. you said it was because riley was beginning to feel numb but it was also a small peak into what depression was in rileys head. they couldnt make her feel anything. kids may not be able to process emotions yet but it helps give them an understanding of what they are. my little cousin walked in on me crying once and he asked me "are you blue?" great movie
One of the best things about this movie is how it distinguishes sadness from depression (the board going grey, feeling nothing)… it’s super emotional, there’s no time I’ve watched it and not cried, even when I watch reactions… sending love and good energy to all of you 🤍
Edit: I think what makes Sadness important in this concept is empathy… Joy actually said “they all came to help because of sadness” which is feeling sad about someone else, so empathy… and I believe that’s also why mum has sadness as the leading emotion
I appreciate all your openness to feel your emotions on camera. So many guy review channels are “too butch” to acknowledge everyone has emotions
This movie and Soul are some of Pixar’s most heartwarming masterpieces
i always understood sadness as frustrating as she was. exactly she needs to feel sad so she can feel happy
I moved many times, I moved to different cities every two years so I had to change schools too. It was very difficult for me to open up, to regain new friends all over again, I understand Riley and why she was frustrated, that's why till this day I hate any kind of change but this movie for sure has helped me to understand many things about myself growing up.
I never even noticed the way the adults were being led by a different emotion other than joy until you pointed it out! that’s such a neat detail
Then she faintly hears Bing Bong’s song off in the distant.
that bittersweet core memory hits every time
I always cry when Bingbong sacrifices himself and says “take her to the moon for me” 😭😭
bryce crying is literally me i cry during this movie all the time
worried for bryce when he watches inside out 2 cuz i sobbed and had a panic attack
Joy - Amy Poehler
Fear - Bill Hader
Anger - Lewis Black
Disgust - Mindy Kaling
Sadness - Phyllis Smith
Bing Bong - Richard Kind
Riley - Kaitlyn Dias
Mom - Diane Lane
Dad - Kyle MacLachlan
32:31 Sadness was making good choices all along. she was doing her job. The child was moved away from a happy home. it's sadness' job to respond accordingly and cry about it.
Cry every time Riley breathes in that sigh 😭
Hope you gents watched the mid credits sequences too!
no joy no sad : thats just the start of depression .. then the personalities are crumbling one by one because there is nothing else to be happy about .. always to put joy on every thing is toxic ,, riley needs to be allowed to access her other emotions ,, to understand what she feels .. and its okay to be sad when she needs to be sad .. only then she can understand again what joy is and how its differs from sad and other emotions ..
this movie hits home really hard because i watched it just a year after i was started feeling depressed and started going on counseling .. but it helps me a lot to understand more whats been happening to me during those dark periods ..
i was like bryce (crying)
“That’s the anti-seabear circle” 😂 love a good SpongeBob reference
Bro predicted Anxiety was gonna be an emotion.
I can’t wait for Inside Out 2!
Not me bawling when Bing Bong says "take her to the moon for me" 😭
The bing bong scene never fails to make me cry🥺
ONE OF MY FAVORITE DISNEY MOVIES. I CRIED A TON WITH THIS ONE LIKE I CRIED IN COCO, TOY STORY AND ENCANTO. GOSH, DISNEY MOVIES REALLY HIT EM DIFFERENT.
