I have hope for this based on what the director said in an interview. “We all saw it as our job to basically not touch as much as we could, leave Charlie’s writing as much as we could. We wanted to add more physical stakes. To me, it was mostly about the stakes being really clear. [It was] about what the characters wanted and making sure the audience felt that… The rest was Charlie making an incredible script for us.” - Sean Charmatz
Knowing Kaufman and his work, I have a feeling that this movie is going to be more than just a kid being afraid of the dark. Prepare for an existential field trip, kids!
The trailer purposefully keeps out a bunch of Kaufman stuff. Its tone is definitely a marketing move to make the film more appealing to regular audiences
Well, I read the short children’s book this was based on to kids when I worked in a daycare. Was maybe 20 pages long. Did not expect to see it interpreted by fucking Kaufman.
The premise of this movie reminds me of “Scary Godmother” where a scared girl gets to know a witch, skeleton, and furry. They teach her to not be scared of monsters.
Yeah, that makes sense. Kung Fu Panda 1 was already a really good movie (despite being a bit generic), but I feel like 2 genuinely is just better and there's so much about it that works so much more than you'd ever expect it to.
I honestly really dig this. It might be mid, but they've got a unique style going, we're going to do a whole character-focused thing about exploring his fears and having what seems to be this visual metaphor for how he feels about the world, it's giving me the impression it'll be a whole "Scary things aren't always bad" type of deal which is usually pretty fun... I don't think it's going to be amazing, but yeah, this looks cool. I'd watch it.
Adum, the simple fact is that a vast majority of subscription based users simply cannot and do not tell the difference between 1080p and 4k. I've sat with family members and watched the quality dip to what is clearly 480p even on high speed connection premium subs, and nobody in the room bats an eye. It's cheaper for server space and bandwidth costs, so I'm sure Netflix and Co. has already done tests and calculations to figure our the bare minimum they need to get customers, even the ones that pay for 4k. The percentage of people who understand compression in the context of streaming is less than 0.1% of the user base, and that vocal minority spits out so much misinformation that the average user will likely not ever figure it out.
I usually agree with Adum's take on the 4k thing, but with animation I don't really think it's that big of a deal because it's not as simple as just filming it in 4K. The textures have to be made and rendered in 4K, as well as all the models which can be really intensive on a computer, and you're talking about at least TRIPLING the render-time & computing power if you wanna export the animation in 4k. Not saying it isn't possible, but maybe with some of these budgets it just isn't worth it to.
Of course. Adum is doing a better job in promoting Kaufman from this seemingly generic kids film than Netflix to attract the attention of the adult demographic. Take notes, Netflix.
I was let WAAAY DOWN. Let us pretend this author was unknown, would it gotten praise? No. This entire film was a mess. I’m convinced that most YT critics are paid at this point.
Why hire Kaufman to make a script if they're gonna change it later, and more probably than not, dumb it down. The style is kind of bland for me, kind of boring, in a time when animated movies have become quite experimental with their styles.

That's very good to hear.
Knowing Kaufman and his work, I have a feeling that this movie is going to be more than just a kid being afraid of the dark. Prepare for an existential field trip, kids!
Particularly because last I recall, Kaufman wanted it to be as faithful to his script as possible.
Beau is Afraid of the Dark?

God I hope so I want kids to feel sad
Spoilers for trailer 2 you weren’t kidding

Kaufman saw what Spike Jonze did with Where the Wild Things Are and thought “challenge accepted”

Was looking to see if Charlie Kaufman had done any other animated films other than like Anomalisa. Apparently he consulted on Kung Fu Panda 2?!?
That would explain why the script of Kung Fu Panda 2 was so great.
Knew about that before, and that's not that surprising to me actually considering how it dealt with themes of genocide and trauma.
Yeah! Specifically, he was a script consultant for the movie, but he went uncredited, it’s on the movie’s IMDb page if your curious
Ah now that you mention that I remember them talking about it on that episode of sardonicast! So strange
Yeah, that makes sense. Kung Fu Panda 1 was already a really good movie (despite being a bit generic), but I feel like 2 genuinely is just better and there's so much about it that works so much more than you'd ever expect it to.
whyd I read this as onion and the dark
We need the supercut of adum talking about resolution for april fools day

I love watching Adam complain about 1080 as I watch everything in eternal 720
I generally watch everything in 360p.
@@Accountnamehere1968saves on data
@@Accountnamehere1968360p? Look at this guy. Your Internet bill must be crazy. 240p for me #budget
You fools! I watch everything in 240p!
Now who watches everything in 144p?
I mean it doesn't look mid as shit like every Disney and Pixar animated film this year. So yeah I am looking forward to it lol.
I feel like studios are gonna start uploading unfinished footage in 1080p just to fuck with Adum.
It’s incredibly faithful to the Kaufman script, prepare to be taken on an existential trip that isn’t spoiled at all in this trailer.
Having just watched the actual movie, I was genuinely amazed at how much Kaufman there was in there!
Orion is afraid… of the BELT!
You hope for a Kaufman twist made me realize, no movie anymore shows a live action kid waking up from an animation. It's due time.
I am so DEEPLY ashamed that I didn't even know about this work until after it came out. And I thought that I was SUCH a Charlie Kaufman STAN...
The sound effect when Olivia did the zoom in cracked me up.
I love that YMS commented on Jacob Tremblay weeks before the trailer for this came out.
I watched it. It's pretty good imo
Werner Herzog and Charlie Kaufman that is absolutely incredible.

That doesn't mean the option shouldn't at least exist for the consumer
@@kitnamedgrannice placebo yall got there
I hope Charlie's script is respected in here.
I hope it’s not, and it’s a generic kids movie with random and sporadic allusions to existential dread.
Damn I heard about this movie and the style I only now noticed that Adum pointed it out. One of the few times his 4K rants actually mattered lol
if there is a hell and adam goes to it, it would literally just be just like nornal life but all videos are in 360p
eyes see in 1080p

Adam liking Leo is kinda funny
I'm liking the editor's notes.
love the new editor
I feel like this one is gonna make me cry
I hate that it sounds like Seth Rogan. Kaufman wouldn’t have picked Rogan or a Rogan sound-alike. He would’ve probably picked Tom Noonan lol.
We need his review now
finish synecdoche new york u psycho
Paul Walter Hauser
Pajama Sam did it first
And he wonders why we think he won't shut up about 4k🙃
Adam. The fanf animatromics in the fnaf movie were practical and not cgi. Get it.
you are a loser

this seems nice, or I am just lost in sauce from being fucked by wish.
We get his complain about 4K/1080p but everyone agrees this shit is getting real tiresome
