That was such a HUGE deal when it happened. Always associated that guitar and the SLO. Album came out during beach week right after my senior year of high school... the neck pickup, the wah... it was such a big deal.
Pete i've read that he went with that air gap pickup design because like you were talking about pickups can be de-magnetized. And it was around that same time he recorded Poundcake and using an electric drill can de-magnetize the pickups. He already had that intro down several years before he recorded the song because i've heard it before on older mid 80's rough recordings. So he was probably aware of the effect the electric drill had on pickups in a negative way. Great video, i'm such a VH nerd i love watching everything about the history of the band and Ed.

aw man, that would not be right without Eddie ... I am sure Alex would feel the same. I mean Alex ended up being one of the greatest rock drummers the world has ever known, so it's like if he needs to make a buck, he doesn't have to rewind.
@@RulgertGhostalker to me it’s not about making a buck. All proceeds could go to whatever was Eddies favorite charity was. It just feels that, as a great musician (the greatest guitarist of all time imo), he never had a proper send off. I get Alex’s grief, and grieving never ends. I think that his book release, later this year, will help towards his healing. And yes, he was the greatest drummer. I just think all us fans, who also grieve his loss, need a tribute concert to the great man.
I was 16 when that ad came out. I didn't play guitar but my best friends were in a band so I spent countless hours baked in the jam barn reading those mags you mentioned. Cheers from Canada, great video
Runaround is such a badass riff and you nailed it better than anyone I've seen yet. Disgusting in such a good way! This Eddie time period was so impactful on me... I was 13 when F.U.C.K. came out and 1991 was a crazy good year for rock music in general. So glad I got to live through that period.
Great video Pete! It blew my mind when Ed showed up with that guitar. I’m 59 so I remember it all like yesterday. They play so dang great. I never could afford one. Keep the content coming!!
Thanks for sharing your guitar with the world, Simon!! Pete - spot-on with capturing Ed's spirit in your playing! As Ed said in the past: "You do a good me!"
Fun little EBMM EVH guitar fact, The guitar's body shape was originally for Albert Lee's signature guitar but he felt it was too close to his tele's so he passed on that one and went with that other Odd shape that is now the Albert lee EBMM and the name AXIS was what it was originally called when it was intended for Albert lee. IF you look closely at the head stock of the unpainted prototype Ed is playing it say's "AXIS" on the headstock, Reply
7:07 - EBMM had made their version of a Strat (the Silhouette) which was commercially successful. They also had designed their version of a Telecaster (the Axis) which they had not commercialized, yet. They offered to use it on the EVH signature guitar. You can see EVH with very early prototypes labeled “Axis”.
I remember when this guitar first came out and I absolutely hated that it wasn't a red and white stripe frankenstrat style, but after hearing it and for unlawful carnal knowledge, I was sold. Now I have a kit version of the EBMM EVH and play it as my number 1
Well, since I was a teenager I wanted that guitar...when a friend of mine back in Jersey (ahem George Estremera) had a mint Axis he wanted to sell me...I jumped immediately at the opportunity. The Axis may not be an official EVH signature model...but those who know, know its as close as you'll ever get short of dropping 8K on an original. Cheers Pete, great stuff as always!
That playing at the beginning sounds just like Eddie came back to life. Very awesome job sir! As far as guitars, I can't help it, I'm a huge Kramer fan. I've just always loved Kramer guitars. From Eddie, to Mick Mars.
@PETE THORN, So happy for you pete that you found one not only in trans amber but in such mint like new shape!😱 It is like the universe said lets give him a second chance at owning one! 😁 Like yourself i was not able to get one back when they first came out and later really regretted it. I did get a AXIS in trans red like he played in "Judgement day" on RHRN live. I love it! everything about the guitar is great to me. BTW, your' opening playing and tone sounded EXACTLY like EVH! 😱
I loved what you said at the end - I connect with this era on a deep level. That iconic Music Man ad that you show here represents the very beginning of my guitar journey, when I started playing 30+ years ago. I didn't ever own of these guitars, but what that ad represents for my life journey learning guitar through magazines like you said, and seeing this ad constantly... it's hugely important to me. It was hanging up in my room, and the '91 Van Halen show (Milwaukee WI) was my first major concert I attended. Aside from the nostalgia of this ad, was the radio ad for the concerts ... saying "other shows sold out in 6 minutes" ... Well sheesh, I wasn't going to miss out! My aunt told me, for when tickets went on sale via phone - "Don't call the Ticketron in your city, call the # for a different city's Ticketron, so you will be able get through!"... and I did. Unforgettable. I bought the $35 (back then) tie dyed VH logo Tshirt and went to the show with my best friend, just at the start of my sophomore year of high school. Just perfect. I would love to play one of these guitars someday. Your intro really grabbed me too, thanks for all your work on this video!
Great story. I remember when this guitar line came out - I had the poster of it from one of the magazines hanging on my wall! I was, like 15, I think? Great times.
Another fantastic installment Pete. Thank you! FWIW, I discovered MM guitars late in my playing life after being a Fender, Ibanez, PRS player, but I never forgot about the neck of a Sterling MM (forget what model) that I grabbed just as they were about to close for the day. I finally just went ahead and ordered a Silhouette Special, and then in quick succession, an Albert Lee HH with all-rosewood neck, and then a Luke III, also with an all RW neck. Man oh man, if only all my guitars could have those necks. "Sumptuous" is how I can best describe all of them. Phenomenal brand.
Interesting bit of trivia for you Pete...he recorded the rhythm for Runaround on a tele fender sent him. That's why it sounds so single coily on the recording. The solo, of course...was his Music Man.
It’s hard for me to watch this without getting a knot in my stomach. He died way to young. You better never die Jimmy Page or I’m completely gonna lose it.
Hi Pete - just a note on "3-axis CNC"; I've been a luthier for thirty years, and work in design for marine and associated things that use CNC. A 3-axis CNC is pretty much any basic CNC. Left-right, forward-backward are two of those axes (like an Etch-A-Sketch) and the third being up-down. At least in this context. Even though CNC was fairly new to production at the time (don't get me talking about Matsumoku, etc!) the real trick here was copying an existing part and using that as the basis for a programme that would move the CNC when making copies. Coordinate measuring (CMM) just didn't exist outside of super expensive industry, military, scientific, etc. which is how you take samples from an object for developing a model. The history of this small point would be an interesting video in itself, albeit for CNC dorks like me. It makes modern structured laser light scanning of objects and 5-axis CNC (which is in my game) truly space age by comparison. A lot of manufacturers were still relying on ganged copy carvers back then, which were literally a row of machines cutting parts with the positions all being guided by a pilot semi-automatically over an origin template. I imagine that this would have needed some proper programming gymnastics by the CNC coders of the time, since programs were still fundamentally developed by hand coding. Crazy stuff man. Also, that "gun stock oil" would have been Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil or similar. It's great for raw necks.
Pete, I just want to thank you for channel, love of EVH, your guitar tech wizardry and the honest delivery of your TH-cam videos. There is a genuineness about you that transcends the everyday slapstick, mugging for the camera, wanking theatrics of other TH-camrs. For the enjoyment you given me, my sincerest hope is that the economics of TH-cam provide you and your family a financially secure standard of living and your vocation and avocation are one in the same. Take care my friend and be well!!
I love those Seymour Duncan Custom Customs (SH-11s). At the recommendation of my FLGS, I dropped a set into a ‘96 MIJ Jackson Dinky (DKMG), alder back, maple top, bolt-on neck I found on eBay. Left everything else stock. THE funnest guitar I’ve ever played. I put it over my knee unplugged (It showed in in tune and set up decently out of the box), and it sounded great. Plugged it in, and with the stock pickups, it sounded like an electric razor. Ergo, the pickup swap. My FLGS knows my gear, and what I like, and made the perfect recommendation based on knowing me for so long.
My HOLY GRAIL guitar since 1992 - I had the poster hanging up, Eddie with the Amber flame top. I currently own 4 original EVH Musicman guitars; Amber, Red, TransBlack, Cherryburst….LOVE EM’!!!! 🔥🎸🔥🎸🔥🎸🔥🎸
What a killer 🤘🏻 story behind a guitar 🎸 ya bought/got from someone dude! Wasn't a huge fan of the shape when I was younger (16) and a 'newer' player. Lol funny isn't it 🤣😂, you get older (39 now) and a seasoned player/Musician (24+yrs) & the shapes + styles you weren't into, you grew into!?!? Never thought I'd own a Music Man guitar, own John Petrucci Signature Mystic Dream 6 String, definitely one of the best 6-strings I've ever played. One of these (doesn't matter about the year) has been on my "want list" for a little over 8 yrs now lol soon, I'm sure I'll find one. Lol just within a reasonable number is just the other factor too Great Vid buddy 👍🏻🤘🏻
That was great, Pete. Described it perfectly. That magazine ad was a total shocker. Seems funny now to think it was such big news but it was, such was the impact of the man. Thanks.

Had three of those music man EVH guitars when they first were released . A aqua blue one from guitar center LA a purple and a red one from Cameron guitars . That guitar looks brand new ….
Thanks for the wonderful history lesson and perspective. I remember where I was, who I was with and what I was doing when a friend turned me on to VH the summer of 1978. “Running with devil” if you’re wondering. They changed rock and roll for ever. What EVH could do with a guitar was intimidating for this young music lover and budding musician. What Angus Young was doing at the time actually changed ME.

If ever they decide to stage an EVH tribute concert, I vote for you and Wolfgang to share six string duties.
aw man, that would not be right without Eddie ... I am sure Alex would feel the same.
I mean Alex ended up being one of the greatest rock drummers the world has ever known, so it's like if he needs to make a buck, he doesn't have to rewind.
Wolfgang has said he won’t be a part of it because “I don’t want to play those songs without dad” was his reason
@@sloanfrederick3461 and then he went on to play them at the Taylor Hawkins tribute. Rather hypocritical wouldn’t you say?
@@jimmcdougall9973 I wouldn’t say that, it’s because he had a special connection with van halen not as much the foo fighters
Pete, playing absolutely on point in this video.
Also, the pure nostalgia of seeing the EVH Music Man in "Guitar Techniques" magazine.
Thank you,
Great video Pete!
Fun little EBMM EVH guitar fact, The guitar's body shape was originally for Albert Lee's signature guitar but he felt it was too close to his tele's so he passed
on that one and went with that other Odd shape that is now the Albert lee EBMM and the name AXIS was what it was originally called when it was intended for Albert lee. IF you look closely at the head stock of the unpainted prototype Ed is playing it say's "AXIS" on the headstock,
Reply
I don’t think it was the body shape it was the head stock you are talking about
@@humanactivated1017 The headstock is the same on all EB/MM guitars, it's their trademark.
@@MK-1010well it was originally from OLP before Ernie Ball got it.
@@n34z3r You got it backwards. Do you know what OLP means?
@@MK-1010 it is OLP not OPL. I did mix up the letters.
This is a fantastic piece of media: great playing, great investigation into the EVH EBMM, great human interest story. Really top notch, man.
Beautiful specimen of a Music Man. RIP Eddie!
I have an original Kramer Pacer II Candy apple red unfinished mape neck. Paid about $750 new in 1983 ish. Still got it.
Pete, you're the one and only for a tribute reunion with the guys...
Thanks! I'm sure Joe will be great!
I was about to skip this video in my feed. But I'm genuinely happy I did Not! The intro playing man! Puts a big Eddie like smile on my face ❤️🙏🏻🙌🏻🔮
As you mentioned, Pete, Ed's music brought people together.
Still difficult to stomach that your heroes are human.
@PETE THORN, So happy for you pete that you found one not only in trans amber but in such mint like new shape!😱 It is like the universe said
lets give him a second chance at owning one!
Hey Mr Thorn awesome videos an your definitely an amazing guitar player
Great story. I remember when this guitar line came out - I had the poster of it from one of the magazines hanging on my wall! I was, like 15, I think? Great times.
Pete's EBMM EVH guitar is just the best.
Got one too, tremendous piece of kit.
Could definitely hear that and that makes sense!
Take a shot every time Pete says ‘evidently’ lol. Love you Pete, keep rocking!!!
It’s hard for me to watch this without getting a knot in my stomach. He died way to young. You better never die Jimmy Page or I’m completely gonna lose it.
And a lump in my throat.
Pete, you're a monster player. That riffage in the intro was mind blowing. Thanks sir
Thanks so much! I really enjoy making videos like this, especially!
Lol just within a reasonable number is just the other factor too
Great Vid buddy 👍🏻🤘🏻
That was great, Pete. Described it perfectly. That magazine ad was a total shocker. Seems funny now to think it was such big news but it was, such was the impact of the man. Thanks.
Pete you are an amazing player, would love to see you on G3 - your skills and technique are right up there with the best. Even more than that - you still find time to share all of your experience on playing, gear & music in general on here. Thank you.
What a great video Pete. Still have chills. Man I love the stuff with a story behind it. Especially when Eddie is involved. Nice Run A Round. Spot on.
That is soooooo SWEET! Great Video Pete! Eddie Van Halen still blows my mind in the inventions he created from his mind. GENUIS! CHEERS PETE! 🤘🤘👍
dramn! that was a great intro to the video. Makes me realize, again, how melodic Eddie was .... especially when it is rendered so well by another.
This is why I LOVE electric guitars! Thanks Pete!
Amazing intro (of course) I do remember that advertisement. Bravo Simon. What an awesome video !!! One for the fans indeed. The For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album was an amazing piece of artistry and work in motion. The depth of knowledge and perspectives you share are always enjoyable.
Hell yeah Pete!! Man I got a lil choked up you're nailing his tone so great... AMERICAN HISTORY! Ruling...-Scott
Pete just nails EVH.. its almost spooky.
Totally remember this ad too - Guitar For the Practicing Musician was how I learned guitar, music theory, modes, etc.. probably the most important piece of literature (musically speaking) in my youth by far. Cheers to Andy Aldort and the rest of the staff!
I was thinking about Ed this morning and stumbled upon this wonderful video. Slainte 🍻
Love that you used the orange Music Man just like Eddie did premiering that song live on MTV.
Golden history lesson, this is some new content I haven't seen anywhere! Great video! Also, that intro was totally insane!!!
Gotta say, Im excited to see Satch on the upcoming tour, but holy cow you have the tone and sound down. Im thinking Sammy should bring you on stage ..great job!
Sounds killer Pete. What a gift to the guitar loving world, and I mean you. So chill yet talented, thanks
Thank you!
You have an amazing recorded guitar sound. I remember that EVH Story. That's when I become a Music Man fan.
Your the ola englund of Van Halen dude! I’m a huge dimebag and evh fan and just got a plexi clone, variac, and eventide micropitch and your helping me out so much man! Getcha pull pal🍻
Simon seems such a lovely chap, I really love his story about actually getting that guitar, so cool.
Great story, Pete. I remember, like yesterday, when that guitar debuted. So unique, like Eddie himself. I have one on the way this spring.
Congrats on getting such a cool guitar, and to Simon for getting it into someone's hands who can do it justice. Interesting story. It's great when the guitar community works like this. 👍😎
Had three of those music man EVH guitars when they first were released . A aqua blue one from guitar center LA a purple and a red one from Cameron guitars . That guitar looks brand new ….
This was a great video, Pete!
Great video Pete! Your content is a such a gift for us Ed-heads!
Thanks!
Excellent documentation Pete!
Love this video! Thanks Pete! One thing that nobody talks about regarding Runaround, Ed played at least the intro and the verse on a Telecaster. Those twangy tones don’t come from the EBMM.
Man that ROCKED! Sweet tone and flawless riffs. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you kindly!
Excellent playing, put an instant Eddie smile on my face.
What a cool and special episode of my favorite EVH signature guitar! Thanks, Pete!
Those magazines were like heaven to me. Learning songs and licks from tab.
Good to see Pete on the interwebs again, I guess TH-cam algorithms have been denying me content, great vid.
