Eddie's so genuinely nice, I've read countless stories of him just chillin' with fans. This project for Chip must've been mind-blowing for him knowing he was able to pull off this replica for his hero.
It’s funny that Chip says he discovered VH from the 1984 album. I knew someone just like that. He’d never heard of them until the 1984 album, probably because he was much younger than me, and he asked me what other VH albums he should get and I so proudly told him to get every album before 1984 and get ready for the ride of your life! Still makes me smile to this day imagining him getting his mind blown by so many awesome songs!
I find EVH fascinating, not only is his playing fascinating but just listening to him talk and explain his amps and guitars are also fascinating. They will never be another EVH and it was great while it lasted and at least his music will always be around.
I can’t imagine building a replica guitar for my hero only to have him be so impressed and gracious about it while hanging out with me at the same time. Holy shit man…
He was just knocking at the door, when he passed. So many, why? I heard it was from electric set up with mike.I know he explained his theory why he got cancer HE was probably right R.I.P. EDDIE.Thanks!
This is awesome. Will we ever witness creativity like this again? Note to all: No tone wood snobbery, bone nut discussions, finish blah, just a broke young man with endless enthusiasm, drive, work ethic, and creativity, to take throwaway pieces and change music forever.
man, just think about ALL the innovations and changes he led to within guitar manufacturing and sales. He literally invented the super strat/frankenstrat guitars and many more things. just nuts.
Shows Ed was just a decent guy next door, who loved playing. He got intoxicated & poisoned by success, $$$, liars, enablers, pushers in his ear, but still just a humble genius. So glad his legacy is beating his Demons vs OD or the way Allen Collins & others went like Hendrix. Too bad he had to go "young", he could have kept evoving as a legend till 90 or 100 in relevance. Great interview even if he wasn't healthy, he was still Ed, and cool. RIP King ELVH 🎶🎸🔥
I love when people ask musicians about their creations and they are like i wasn’t really overthinking anything, I just was doing what I liked and how it sounded
EVH was like a Mad Scientist when it came to Guitars and music in general, there will never be another like him, not even close, I could listen to him talk about guitars all day, great video!!
Love that he made his guitar. It has so much mojo as the master created his tool based on his needs. That’s incredible for his time (before customs were available and or affordable).
I saw them in Sweden 1984 ,that shows later became legendary, though it was the first and last Van Halen concert ever in Sweden,at least with Dave Roth ❤❤❤❤❤
I’m glad Matt was able to get this interview before he passed. Something about the way he talks about his guitar is like a cowboy and his horse or maybe gun
he was def either on some detox program or was still on drugs during this since 1996-2015 he looks so thin and his voice is so bad, glad he got out of it before his untimely passing.
I remember when the guitar player w/ whom I played for 8.5 years quit a project we had worked on w/ another person and the loss felt. I'm sure what I felt is pale to how Alex felt, considering those guys were together since they learned to walk.
He was in his own universe, don't blame him,he was an innovator,a creator,a man who wanted his own material, his own world, music is a personal thing. He was a TONE CHASER,That's all❤
The red one is more comercially appealing, that´s why it became an icon. Like a TH-cam thumbnail with color saturation. Not very artistic but it sells.
Roth really was the leader of the band , he gave them direction and motivation. Eddie was the genius , the composer . The heart & soul of the band. Alex was the foundation, him and his brother were the strength & power of Van Halen. Michael was the loyal employee who carried the van halen flag into battle every night . Then sam came and also gave the band direction. We will never see another Van Halen ever imo. One of thee greatest R&R bands to ever exist. R.I.P Ed ...
Actually Alex was the leader from day 1 because he could beat the crap put the rest of them. Wolfgang said "my Dad was never the leader Al was" you an see it when they do interviews. They mostly talk to Eddie and every once in a while Al chimes in and Eddie always nods his head.
Growing up as a kid I think of David Lee Roth fondly. I remember the band was named Mammoth, Or they wanted to name it Mammoth. The band was great, but maybe going nowhere. Roth talked them into calling the band Van Halen. Roth inspired them, watch them on stage. The whole band was great and I see Eddie over and over doing those little jumps and kicks, with a huge grin. That was him following Roth's on stage performance, I think the whole band knew they were going places at that point.... Years later I watch all these great guitar players, showing how nearly impossible it is to play some of Eddie's stuff, and I think it was all Eddie's genius. Then, I think, without Roth we may have never known.
I wouldnt say so much he was out of his mind because he was never out of his mind, he was the most innovative and one of a kind and hes actually quite toned down here
Thank for posting this. I'm be curious what year this interview took place. The fact that Eddie is so knocked out with this replica is great, "it feels better than the original" is saying something.
This was a disc sent out in guitar world magazine, in 2008 I have it somewhere, it also had the promo for the Frankenstein guitar you could purchase something like 500 or 50 of the exact replicas were built and I believe they were selling for $20,000 maybe it was more or less . But basically that's where and what the entire disk was about if memory serves correct.
@@jerrysanders9101 You're probably right, I have the Magazine somewhere, I just figured by how he was looking it was done around the time he was having difficulties 2007-08.
My cousin, Jeff Scott(Scozzaro), a well known custom auto painter/striper originally painted the guitar when a young, unknown Eddie walked into his So CA shop and asked him to paint it. Sometime later Jeff was in a market and saw a magazine rack with a photo of Eddie and the guitar he painted, and was shocked to see it.
I can't remember the name but there is a punk guitar band that Eddie would go to see in the '70s. And the guitarist had put black stripes or tape on his guitar. That's where Eddie got the idea from
I watched this many times before ! and did anyone noticed down below behind him thats a 5150 3 amp ? i wonder if this was a prototype ? not sure when the date of this interview was?
I built a lot of balsa wood model airplanes from kid to teen years and learned a lot about masking and spray-painting. This is an interview and to make it interesting, a lot of things have been embellished. Anyone who makes a true replica would have to have the real model to work from, not from photos. In the photo with both of them with three "frankenstrats" you can clearly see that the stripes on the upper horn of the guitar on the left do not match the one in the middle of the photo.
The first time I heard Van Halen 1978 a friend said, "Listen to these guys HIS name (my friend) was Eddie also he past away around 1980 he never got to see how far V.H. went R.I.P. TO BOTH EDDIE'S!!!!
The first time I heard VH was live in '78 opening for Black Sabbath. First concert and me and my buddy went to see Black Sabbath and VH comes out and holy shit. Had the album next day. :) Sorry about your friend.
I totally agree with Ed. Fender necks and bodies feel WAY better than Les Pauls, but that humbucker is the shyt! I’m SO glad I rented a Les Paul first, and realized I hated how it felt and played. Then I tried a EVH Franky, and said that feels WAY better. Then I geeked out and built my own! Mine is about 90% to what Chips is, at 1/15th the price. Totally happy with it!
Ed's noodling during the interview is just an example of how music just flows through the man. R.I.P. Eddie, your contribution to music and the guitar, just can't be overstated. See you later....play on...
Really great to see this - thanks 👍 Poor ol’ Ed seems a wee bit ‘weird’ here, no offence folks but he’s not seeming to be at his best. Still a feckin’ genius tho’. Rest well Eddie. 🇮🇪
EVH was a complicated guy. Apparently a good son. Obviously a master musician. Probably a genius in his vision of his art. Who dreams this stuff up? He did.
Good grief. At no time in Edward Van Halen's life did he name his guitar "Frankenstrat." EVER! It was always called "Frankeinstein," still IS called "Frankenstein" and will ALWAYS be called "Frankenstein." "Frankenstrat" came at the creation of a media writer who knew nothing about what he was speaking of but got close. FACT: "Frankenstein's" guitar case clearly says "Frankenstein" on it and NOT "Frankenstrat." The multi-talented Wolfgang Van Halen who is not only obviously the proud and most legitimate owner of this most insanely wanted axe, has even stated the name of this holy grail guitar is indeed "Frankenstein" and NOT "Frankenstrat." Truth be told, when the name "Frankenstrat" was concocted, Edward really didn't care and just went with it for the heck of it. This guitar was his creation and that's all he cared about. It was HIS.
Hopefully by "at his best" you mean in a one on one interview and not this particular moment in time because it's sad to see him looking and sounding so worn down and unhealthy. Thankfully he got himself well.

Saw the first tour in Philly opening for sabbath and while Roth was carnival huckster annoying, Eddie Van Halen was other worldly playing wise as it was something no one has ever heard play like that. 1978 I think it was and might have been ozzys last sabbath tour for a while too.
Can we just think about this for a second? How proud would you be, if you learned you were the person that sold the flawed body and neck, of what would become easily the most recognizable guitar in world?
Best interview I've ever herd with this guitar player. No embellished mansion with superficial crap around. Nice rustic looking room with a musician who sold a lot of records and was very candid and down- to -earth. With all the badmouthing by Hagar, I hear nothing of the sort in this interview.
This was the studio he built next to his mansion. Studio was the same dimensions as a racquetball court as I think that's what they claimed it was when applying for building permits. It reminds me of my dad's workshop, comfortable and full of just about everything a tinkerer would ever need.
Reminds me of how Val Rossi describes his motorcycle racing. He doesn't know how he does it, he just does it. Great video, thanks!
Thank you for this! And thanks to Eddie for being so candid & fun in the interview. RIP EVH. There will never be another!
Yep, I second that.
Eddie's so genuinely nice, I've read countless stories of him just chillin' with fans. This project for Chip must've been mind-blowing for him knowing he was able to pull off this replica for his hero.

Wow! The best EVH interview I have ever seen. I am embarrassed to say that I have never seen it before. Thank you!!

Absolutely fantastic interview. Happy for the guitar builder that Ed was so appreciative of his efforts. Can’t believe that he’s gone. RIP

Eddie is the epitome of the greatest guitar players, yo ever exist. His style and innovation, was unmatched

One of the best interviews I’ve seen.
My buddy Dave...God Rest Him owns the Eddies' Original #2 5150 Frankenstrat... He had owned it for over 20 years...Very Cool Piece...
GREAT video! Also: Sooo awesome to know how much Eddie respected and loved Dimebag. ... Now they're both jammin together with Vinnie!
What's strange about EVH is he looked sickly when he was healthy, and looked healthy when he was sick.
he was def either on some detox program or was still on drugs during this since 1996-2015 he looks so thin and his voice is so bad, glad he got out of it before his untimely passing.
Ed was in bad shape, struggling against his demons. When he got clean he rebounded. Sadly it was too late. RIP 🔥🎸
Great, very specific questions...this is a great interview!

Greatest interview ever 🎸
