"To the Death: Blood Angels' Briefing" "Underpants Off: Blood Angels' Debriefing." What a fun battle report. Tycho's paint job looks like it has jumped straight out of a comic book 😎
This was all the fun of the old editions, you could shoot at the enemy unit and accidentally destroy your own, the vehicle could explode from one minor penetration of the armor from a weapon that could not even penetrate a tank, by killing just one warlord you could make half of the opponent's army flee in panic and it was fun. Then the battles seemed more realistic: 1. Change of day and night. 2. The vehicle could break on rocky terrain. 3. The damaged vehicle could perform the function of shelter. 4. Realistic vehicle damage system. 5. Shelter could REALLY cover you from enemy fire (not that now in the ninth edition). 6. Flamethrowers passed through the walls and explosions could destroy an entire squad, which approached the realistic perception of weapons. 7. Warlords could fight fair duels. 8. Realistic system of giving orders, it was very funny when the commissar tried to give an order every time and the squad he commanded stupidly did not carry it out due to bad throws (I just imagined how it looked in real combat every time 😂). And in general it was really cool.😔
That tiny little bolt-thrower poster made me smile, lol. Been bingeing these videos lately, these are some of the best battle reports on youtube, thanks for making these.
Absolutely loved this series! The length and commentary for the videos was spot on. I think most of us are here for that nostalgia kick, rather than watching the intricacies of the 2nd ed rules being debated, and this conveys that perfectly. Hope to see more soon! Maybe some of the missions published in the old White Dwarfs?
I can't explain how much I enjoy these videos. Biggest kudos for all the care you've put into every aspect of creating this. Hope you are also having a blast along the way!
This is an absolutely brilliant batrep. You’re videos are just top tier standard and the style you do them in is very immersive. Please please keep doing them. They are amazing! Great work mate and well done on what you’ve achieved with your 2nd Ed content so far!! Bravo!
@@edpaintsminis I purchased that boxed set in 1992 while in college, and I'm embarrassed to say that I bit off way more than I could chew (I wasn't a good painter back then). I eventually traded the miniatures away to someone, and never saw them again. I regret it, and wish I had those models in my possession again, because I can now do them justice. 😭
I just got back into 40k....after 17years, I moved to Australia from Germany, just got home and realised that I've got most of the Gorka Morka and 2nd and 3rd edition of ork miniatures, I get back into full-time!!!! Best depression cure😂
Da Krusha got da krunched in the end lol. You great presentation and style remined me of Thomas the Tank Engine especialy the Ork breifing in the beginning lol. Great work Ed and lovely painted models and terrain too.
actually this is the first battle report i enjoyed. Something about the whole retro thing making me nostalgic maybe, but i think you´ve really got something here, formula-wise. Would love to see more of that.
I’d been looking forwards to this ..! Although I owned a copy of 2nd edition back in the day, for a variety of reasons, I never played a game - but this is how I always imagined games when reading through things like Codex Imperialis or battle reports in a friend’s issues of White Dwarf, and I love the little touches, like the Space Marines and the Orks being briefed by their respective commanders. I also - and please don’t take this the wrong way..! - like that your painting and modelling is both aspirational but achievable(-seeming..!) 🎵 Thundergitz is on the move, Thundergitz is loose… 🎶
That's amazing to hear! And I'm right with you - I'm trying to capture the spirit of these games in narrative and presentation. Definitely not taken the wrong way! My painting would make '95 me very happy indeed. There's always more I could do, but getting these minis into the action is the priority! Thanks so much for the lovely comment!
This has been a wonderful series to follow, put a real smile on my face watching these missions played again. Absolutely loving the channel and production value, awesome work!!!
Brilliant! So much childhood nostalgia. those dice rolls 😂 Army's and table/terrain look amazing Thanks for the videos really enjoying them keep up the awesome content
Thanks so much! There's something wonderful about early 2nd with just basic forces arrayed against each other. I'm thinking about a custom campaign series this year...
Easily my favourite battle reports on TH-cam lately. These videos make me want to play 2nd edition again. Keen to see more, particularly if there's some sneaky Bloodaxe Kommandos involved.
Absolutely amazing, I love it, make more :D I realy wish all the best and please, keep on making my day better. Now I just want a 40k low budget TV show set in 80s estethics and music... what an atmosphere your videos and especialy bat reps have! You were absolutely right about it. This is your style. And you can do this like no other. Bravo. Cannot wait for more. Take care!
That was an absolute joy to behold, what a cool battle! The gorgeous board setup, wonderfully painted models, and immersive storytelling really made this a treat to watch. Thanks a lot!
Ah good! I imagined a scenario where maybe we had gone to the shop, grabbed a blister pack, and spent the evening feverishly painting our commanders for the next game! I suppose the idea of every starter set is that it is the core of your army, a starting point for you to add more expensive and specialist minis. Enter Tycho and Thundergit!
@@edpaintsminis Totally agree! Essentially what my brother and I did once we got the box home (we had bought it while on vacation). For my brother it was trading up to the metal Ork Dreadnought just like you did, Ghazghkull Thraka himself, and a Warbuggy with the Multi-melta. I actually gave my Space Marines to my friend who wanted to start Space Wolves, while I went full Eldar. My friend and I were barely teenagers but had jobs so we had the income to start new armies (at least in early 1990s prices). My younger brother didn't have that luxury, so between his allowance and a very loving big brother (lol) was how he kept up with the arms race so to speak.
Man remember playing this battle when I first found 40k and was learning before I realised my true love, The Imperial Guard and 2nd Eds IG were disgusting with their preliminary barrages, off table fire support and mobile reserves of heavy armour. 4th Ed when they became The Guard and you could customise armies with Doctrines will always be my favourite, but 2nd Ed really captured what fighting a combined arms force of Guardsmen meant
Guard were so call in 2nd! Yeah I'm not that much of a fan of pre game stuff, even with the Tyranids. There's a lot of love for 4th Edition. Maybe I should give it a look.
@Minisodes 4th was my favourite, it was a straight update of 3rd integrating a lot of the OG City fight rules from into the base game. It was arguably the most balanced, but it had its issues, the reserve rules change from 3 wasn't great (basically rendered my drop troop army untenable) there was some tweaking needed with vehicles rules, such as the defence weapon strength being set to low, psykic powers like 3rd before it were relegated to a fancy type of shooting but for the most part it worked and flowed really well. I think though were 4th stands out was its codex's they all followed from the Guard codex's idea of customisation and really created varied diverse armies that rewarded conversion work (since to use most customisation they had to be depicted) and encouraged indivisldualised unique armies. Honestly for that reason alone every version since has felt really regressive to me as there wasn't really a meta to 4th, no 2 armies were totally alike and there was such wide level of customisation in the codexs fighting a specific race didn't mean you knew what you were getting into with Guard for eg you could face anything from a Mechanised Infantry to hordes of conscripts to highly elite carapace specialists clad drop troops with 4WS. It's why I still use the 4th Ed codex as a base for making an army. Sorry gone on a bit, I really miss 4th's freedom and tend to go on a bit 😀
I recall that Orks usually came off second best with what came in the 2nd Ed box set. Warbikes were the Ork unit that terrified me back then - twin autocannons ouch!
Very true. I think there are at least 100pts more blood angels on the field than those poor foot slogging Orks. If the dreadnought goes they're in real trouble!
Great batrep. Not a lot of heavy weapons or vehicles around so you can´t possibly predict what the outcome will be by looking at the list before the game. Keeps the suspense up and is more fun to watch. Also nice vintage paint job. The old greenskin models are just terrific.
Da Boss isnt gonna be 'appy! Really enjoyed this batrep, and especially love your terrain, particularly the sneaky final liberation poster i spotted in the background. I hope theres more 2nd ed batreps to come!
Idk if you knew this at the time of recording but the +5 is the "strategy rating" for every army. marines are weirdly higher than Eldar at a 5 to a 4. If marines rolled a 5 and orks a 4 as in the video, the numbers would be 10 v 10. However because marines had a natively higher strategy rating, they would go first
Ehhhhh, 2nd edition had problems. The rule book literally mentioned that for some of the rules the game makers didn't even know what or how they worked. There were horrifically designed weapons, and vehicle movement actually involved mathematical equations in some circumstances. In terms of the design though, it was a solid fun game, with vehicle damage being my favorite part. 3rd edition was basically a blank slate and first release 3rd is probably the most balanced 40k has ever been, everyone used everything (just named differently). 2nd edition was more or less a colection and condensation of 1st editions rules that were scattered through tens of magazine issues.
oh man you know what this reminds me of? That little campaign book of Dark Angels missions that came out near the end of 2nd ed or the beginning of 3rd ed. I forget what its called though! ahhhh! I can't find it trying to do google searches.

"I didn't really have a plan, except go forwards." Truly an ork at heart.
I typically hate battle reports - but these are fantastic, from the retro minis, the voice over, the debriefing and the music… so good! Keep it up! :)
Awesome! Mission accomplished! Thanks so much for the feedback! 😊
Same this is probably the first battle report I ever made it the whole way through, really well done and compelling
Fantastic report, I'd love to see more 2nd-ed action with these armies!
Oh me too! I think the Orks will be back. With reinforcements...
That final liberation victory music fills me with such nostalgia
Haha same here. Just the icing on the cake really!!
