    I love all of Erin's videos, but this one could have dug a bit deeper into the video capability of SnagIt vs Camtasia. For instance, mentioning it's easy to create GIFs, and do basic edits of a a video in SnagIt. It would have been nice to include a comparison chart or link to one, since there is some overlap.

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not a set limit, no, however we recommend Snagit recordings don't exceed 15 minutes to ensure best results. If you regularly need longer recordings, that's when we'd recommend considering Camtasia.

  • @LearnThaiRapidMethod
    @LearnThaiRapidMethod 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Oh dear... there's so much you DON'T SAY that my questions are far from clarified and I'm still confused.
    I'd like to record activity on the screen, using it as a kind of whiteboard, moving the mouse around, highlighting salient features, etc. and then have a video for editing elsewhere. If I don't want to use Camtasia editing software then what is the difference between Camtasia *screen capture* and Snagit *screen capture* (I'm not interested in static screen capture coz PrtSc does it already, and I just copy the image into Paint or GIMP and extract the bits I want.)
    Crucial features do include the "highlighting" tools (I'm not sure of the terminology). I'd like to encircle text or images on the screen, while recording a voiceover or the soundtrack already playing on the computer, or just have a mouse pointer pointing to things - and be able to quickly change the pointer to a circle or highlighter blob (maybe quickly adjusting the size to suit the detail required) or to an LED pointer dot, say.
    Trimming and cutting out of unwanted frames can be done elsewhere with a video editor. So can Snagit do all of that, or has Camtasia got recording features that Snagit doesn't? If so then is there a version of Camtasia that does NOT have the video editing facilities, coz I really don't need them.
    Thanks.

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Snagit does not have the circle or highlight features in video so you would need to do that in Camtasia or another video editor. I hope this helps!

    Still doesn't tell me what's in Snagit that's not in Camtasia. Why would I want both? Really could use a feature list between both with check marks so I could see what's in each package. Sounds mostly like Snagit is good because the extra features of Camtasia are not in the way but it's not clear what I wouldn't be able to do with just a Camtasia license. This information is not on the TechSmith website either. At least not that I could find.

      Snagit was built first and foremost as a screen capture tool. Now you can also use it to record videos.
      Camtasia was built first and foremost as a screen recorder, and now is a great video editing tool with many effects.
      Snagit is not a video editor and has no post-editing features.
      Camtasia doesn't take screenshots.

    Hey! Great video! I wonder, does Snagit and Camtasia work together on the same project? Lets say, if a client records something in Snagit and sends me the video files, will I still get the same results as if I did everything in Camtasia, even the recording? When I`ve worked in Camtasia earlier, it seems like the zoom tool makes some kind of magical adjustment to the frame, and avoids pixelated images, even on the places where I zoom like 300%. Will this work with Snagit exports, that are imported into Camtasia - edited and exported again?

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn’t expect exactly the same results but in principle this should work. However, when you record with Camtasia the cursor is recorded in its own track that you can later turn invisible or scale up. Snagit doesn’t do this so you’d have no cursor control. I don’t think scaling SHOULD be crystal clear zooming into 300% so I would advise doing that with either video file, but if it’s working for you, more power to you! :)
      Lastly, Snagit doesn’t have any render time. When you’re done recording your video it is an MP4 automatically in your tray and you can drop that straight from the Snagit tray into Camtasia.

    Nice video, except it does not answer the one thing I wanted to find out... what is the duration limitation placed on Snagit videos?

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Officially there isn't a limitation because it's dependent on a variety of your computers' factors (processing power, storage capacity, et al). We used to suggest you not use Snagit for videos over 15 minutes, but in more recent tests, it does fine on modern computers much longer than that, but we'd hate to promise it and then find out someone was using a less powerful computer and it failed on their longer recordings.
      Because Snagit is encoding videos AS it records, it uses more processing power than most recorders. (When you're done, no exporting, just drag and drop your video wherever you like it).

    what is the best way to render video and import it into a video editing software like DaVinci resolve? Is there a specific rule for how to do this?

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a lot of variables to this question. First, we aren't DaVinci and can't answer questions for Resolve. But if you're recording your screen and don't want to edit using Camtasia then you have some options. Snagit doesn't require rendering after you're done recording. It's just done and ready to be drag-and-dropped. That also means you have fewer options outside of your recording size/aspect ratio. Camtasia does take the time and offers a few more exporting options when you're looking to render.

    I don’t need to produce my own videos with my own content. What I do need to do is record video and sound from a library of many already made instructional videos so I have access to them offline. The only editing I think I might need is to edit out parts of the video that are irrelevant. Would Snagit be perfect for that or is there a benefit for Camtasia? Lastly is there a limit to the length of video and or number of screen recording videos you can record and save with either Snagit or Camtasia? Thanks everyone!

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both programs could probably do that well. Really with a large library you're larger concern is storage space on your hard drive. As long as you have plenty of hard drive capacity, both could work. I'd probably recommend Camtasia if they're LONG videos (an hour). Otherwise, you may be able to do it without any issue with Snagit.

    • @RJ_Chicago

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RJ_Chicago Snagit really is meant for much shorter video uses. While it sometimes can handle longer recordings, it's not something we recommend since it can be dependent on many variables. BUT one of the great benefits of Snagit is that it doesn't have any render/export time. When you're done recording, it's ready to be watched. Whereas when you record with Camtasia, you will need to export the video as an MP4, and that will definitely take longer.

    • @techsmith

      You can choose the region of your screen to record but select a custom size (1920x1080 or similar) or you can record the entire screen all at once and then zoom in on it after you're done recording. All of the zooming and panning is done after you record though, not live as you record. So the 'camera' is fixed on one spot, but that spot can be your entire screen. Nothing will be hidden from view if you don't want it to be. But there is not a camera per se, so no camera will show up in view. Just your screen as it appeared while you were recording. I see now, yes, once the video is done recording, Camtasia sets the camera view in the bottom right over your screen recording as a picture-in-picture look, however you can customize that and put it wherever you like, and move it around throughout the video (or even turn it off for a while and bring it back on). Maybe you want to go full-screen with the webcam? That works too! Totally customizable once it's recorded.

And there's probably more but I haven't seen a full side-by-side comparison so I'm still a bit lost on whether it's worth the investment. I'm not blaming this video, I get that it's a brief overview. I'm just on the fence and was hoping for more info.
    Update: I ran across this guy who explained how he uses SnagIt along with Camtasia to speed up his workflow: th-cam.com/video/J4qmgULureQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=dottotech
    I gotta say he has some great points on how best to use SnagIt.

      I appreciate that feedback Erskin! (Andy here). We know there's a lot to explain and often we try to avoid overwhelming the viewer, but sometimes more would be better.
      If it helps, I think of it as Snagit being for images with a touch of video capabilities (picture-in-picture now, as well as simple walk-through explainer abilities). But you can't edit videos out of Snagit. You can only remove sections. But no true non-linear editing. Camtasia is a fully featured video editor AND screen recorder. If you want effects, transitions, text-on-screen, the ability to animate, etc, go with Camtasia. If you have specific questions, ask away!

      @@techsmith That "update" comment about the workflow video sold me on the bundle w/ Snagit. So I Snagged It (purchased) last night. I also got a sweet discount code so I'm very happy. I've been meaning to get Camtasia for a long time... I've been a fan for a long while, but today I'm a whole air conditioner. Thanks for your additional feedback, you've been very helpful. Happy Holidays!

      @@erskinhansen1715 HA! "A whole air conditioner." That's awesome! Thanks for replying Erskin! Great timing to be able to 'snag' the bundle on Cyber Monday! Love hearing this, and remember to check back on our channel here (or our website) if you need any tutorials, have any questions, or just feel like joining us here in the comments again!

    My camtasia recorder is so laggy! I spent all my money on it so I cant buy snagit help!!!

    • @techsmith

      Is it an older version? There are two options I would think of as possible solutions:
      1. Open a ticket with our support teams to see what is making Camtasia run so poorly (if it's only a few iterations old it shouldn't be bad) - bit.ly/ts-gethelp - they'll be able to look at crash reports and file dumps to help assess the problem.
      2. Go to screencast.com in the meanttime, login with your Camtasia/TechSmith user ID, and use the free recorder there by selecting "Launch Recorder" from the top of the screen.
      Let us know how it goes!

      When you say laggy, does that refer to the sound not correlating with the video? When I made several recordings, my voice was lagging behind the image. Does this happen because it's on old laptop?

      That's correct, it's a desktop-only app. We do have our screen recording app TechSmith Capture in the App Store, but we're really a desktop-focused company.

    one day your techsmith software will fail. when that happens and you don't get tech support, you'll be tempted to reinstall the software. when you do that, your snagit database will be overwritten with no hope of getting it back

    OBS is an impressive alternative to the ones you mentioned. This does not mean yours are bad, just different. I was not BIASED.
    Thumbs down for your bias alone.
