Movies are made for escapism. To get away from the real life for a couple of hours, not being constantly reminded of the real world when you watch them.
Its the same when youre watching cartoons as a kid. Pure escapism.
I really dont get when some people say that its important to see yourself on screen so it will be easier to relate to whats going on. If its about ethnicity or skin color or whatever.
I have autism. Im NEVER asking for a character in a movie or show that has some degree of autism. I dont need to see someone that reminds me of myself in that regard. I just want to entertained and engaged in the story.
Rush Hour is a great example of where you have an asian and a black guy in the lead of a movie where it feels organic. Its not like you have to be black or asian to enjoy those movies

Ya know...as an African American female, I'm not gonna spend hard earned money on a movie that sucks simply because it has characters that look like me, which is what Hollywood is banking on, and why they'll eventually go broke if they don't start making talent more important than race, gender, and sexuality.
In the early 90's the majority of my friends were gay dudes who had gay movie nights where it was like we were watching some pretty horrible movies just to support the movement when all of the movies we watched went straight to video for a reason 🤔.

I'm with you and it's insulting, as part of their thinking process must be "Black people will go see ANYTHING as long as black people star in it." I want to see a film because it's well written and the characters are sussed out with an over all solid production. Plus there are so many great original stories from the Bronx all the way to the Central African Republic that could be turned in to films starring African American actors instead of rehashing and recasting like they do today.

In the 80s and 90s there were plenty of local video rental stores whose shelves were heaving with cheap, low budget horrendously bad B-movies nobody wanted to buy and were fit only for the local incinerator. Some of these movies had really nice posters and packaging to entice buyers and renters, but they were still bad gutter quality features.

The biggest problem is the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). They MANDATE diversity hiring. You are literally forced to cast according to their affirmative action rules. The irony being- it is ILLEGAL in the U.S. to hire/fire someone base on race/sex/creed - But SAG is forcing every film production to break the law and do exactly that.

I imagine those laws don't apply to movies, cause there's good reason why they wouldn't. Naturally, for example, if you're making a biopic, you'd want the actor playing the subject of the film to look like the person in question. In a historical film like All Quiet on the Western Front, you're not gonna hire a bunch of black actors to play the German soldiers.

The problem that happened was Hollywood swung too far to one side, the perceived issues weren't invalid, but their answer to limited diversity, inclusivity, gender, sexuality, etc. was to overcompensate and it turned off even the communities they were trying to appeal to. Nobody is denying that the world we live has people of all different shapes, sizes, colours and creeds, but it needs to be REALISTIC: those of a minority understand they are in the "minority", but we live in a time where there is so much content to appeal to everybody, so you can seek it out in so many different forms, so why are mainstream movies and television not appealing to the masses?
Hollywood has had an identity crisis for some time, being influenced by incredibly vocal, upset and sensitive individuals that have found platforms to get what they want or deal with the consequences of going against them and using other vocal, upset and sensitive individuals to push their agenda; its unfortunate that they don't have any self awareness because at the end of the day, Hollywood is a business, its about making money and pushing one's agenda and message only turns people off.

Anime, meanwhile, has been doing that correctly for ages, and without making a big deal out of it. I wish I was as optimistic. I think it's just going to get progressively worse. Just look at any news feed and the content being shown there - have things gotten better or worse? I think objectively it's gotten worse. Looking at Hollywood's track record, we haven't seen fits and starts where it would get bad, then better, then bad, then better. No, we've seen a steady decline generally starting around 2010, but accelerated and solidified in 2016. It won't matter really what a large percentage of the audience wants. It won't matter that studios will only break even or maybe take losses. It won't matter that, had they not inserted far left politics and the expense of story, they could have made four times as much (Star Wars sequels) and opened the way for other movies, and not cancel them because their original productions underperformed. I don't think it's going to change, because they don't care about maximizing profits and only care about pushing a far left narrative.
I honestly believe that they'd rather see Hollywood go down in flames before changing anything. I see zero indication of things changing.

I see changes in advertising. The Super Bowl ads this year are definitely less woke than years past. It takes less time to make ads than live action movies and shows. Animation takes the longest time, which is why Velma exists. Disney seems the most committed to wokeness. I think their executives are afraid of their employees. Netflix employees protested outside of their headquarters after Dave Chappelle’s “The Closer”. After Netflix execs saw the high viewership numbers, they sent a memo to employees telling them: we have a wide variety of content..don’t like that…shut up or leave.

I think video games are quicker to respond for two reasons. First, a much larger fraction of the gaming community is active on gaming specific social media compared to people who go see movies. The internet is more useful in that genre for getting accurate feedback. Second, game developers show a lot more and talk a lot more about in progress projects than movie studios. Combined with the first point they can get feedback on ideas and change the game during production if they think it will make a difference.

I liked how you actually pushed the Drinker (or, Will Jordan, I didn't detect much of the Drinker in this) and pulled out the nuance of his opinions and his deeper reasons for his outlook.
Especially that last comment of "If my castmates' and my revenue percentages were on the line for something I said about one of our major market country's political picadilloes, I might find that a hard line to walk," and Jordan's straight up "Who would I rather please? And which market actually shows like it pays a better dividend and lets me keep my dignity?" was a fantastic point-counterpoint presentation.
You aren't a typical interviewer that highlights the Drinker. You seemed like you drew out Will Jordan and put him out there for guys like me who love the content but not the sarcasm and the cussing. Fascinating to watch!

As a former Percy Jackson fan, I’m curious about how people are going to react to the new Percy Jackson trailer once they reveal all the race-swapped main characters. The author himself is responsible for the race swap and insulted his readers who are not happy with the casting since he previously promised the show to be a faithful adaptation, but it turned out to be the most aggressively race-swapped adaptation ever that makes the other live action Disney remakes look tame. Zeus, Chiron, Medusa, not even the Greek gods and monsters survived being black washed. I’d rest easy just seeing the trailer get ratioed like the Little Mermaid and Peter Pan trailers knowing that these erasures will get rejected and we may eventually get a faithful adaptation when people wake up from this madness someday.

_Captain Marvel_ might have come across as having a more sympathetic protagonist if it was told in chronological order, so the audience had a chance to get to like Carol Danvers, and then was tricked into thinking (as she does) that the Skrulls are evil space invaders and those who "rescued her" aren't cryptofascists. It still will have flaws, but it won't come across as completely unrelatable, like-me-because-I-have-a-colourful-costume-now. It would need a Hero's Journey. It would need some character arc. Something more than just a flashback of her "getting up again" because there was no time to story properly. One idea is to have Carol want to be on the frontlines, but be denied. She wants to fly jets, but is denied. She gets into flying helicopters and helps save families stranded on rooftops during a flood following a hurricane. Normal level, pre-superpower heroics set the foundation for an empathetic character. Then Annette Bening gives her an opportunity to work on her project, but before she gets to fulfil her dream of going supersonic, they get shot down by what are apparently Skrulls, when actually the Kree shot her down because Bening was helping the Skrulls develop engines that would let them escape the Kree's fascist dominion of space, and the Kree edited Carol's memory of the events to make her think the Kree were not there to help and had their gun up to shoot Jude Law's Kree villian Yon Rogg. Anyway the muddle gets sorted out in the end and everyone gets to eat cake.

The reason it's a political movement is because they want to be able to use government to prop them up. Socialist governments survive well beyond what the market would bear is because they can force society to support their failing ideology, and as a result the people suffer. In a market, if you try to do the same thing, as long as society is economically free enough, the corporations that continue down the same path as socialist governments will hopefully fail. It's why this is not only a corporate strategy but a political one from the wokesters. They want to make it so their ideology is not subject to market pressure. Hopefully as long as they are held off from being able to literally monopolize the market with their ideology, they'll simply cease to exist.

They really can't blame the pandemic now, films like Maverick made a load of money because they gave the audience what they have been missing for years now, escapism and good old fashioned entertainment, and the audience lapped it up. If you look at what is being commissioned at the moment things have changed but, as the Drinker points out, it takes 2 to 3 years before this stuff gets released.

Animation takes the longest time and advertising takes the least amount of time. That’s why the Super Bowl ads were much less woke than new animation like Velma, Lightyear, Strange World. The woke fad is dying, but it will take time to work through.

It doesn’t matter if they’re losing money in the theatres if the money rolls in through other avenues.

USA patriotism being in decline is rather due less and less mindset that USA are good guys in politcal arena. They used to be seen as heroes of the western wordl, but people realized that USA has it's flaws and own agenda for their own business

We live in a time when I can’t foresee this effed up industry ever able to make a feel-good, we’re all in this together, neighborly and proud of our country movie again. Be selective with all this crap content!
Live this interview style series you two have.

For most of my life I was happily entertained by the Film industry, but for the last 10 years I have not gone to a Movie Theatre, nor do I watch mainstream television or Netflix. Instead I read, listen to music or watch old movies and TV shows on TH-cam. Many people would be surprised with the treasure-trove of really good entertainment on TH-cam. Recently I started re-watching old Late-Night shows such as Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. It is a shame to see this once-powerful industry self-destruct.

3:31 Wokeness is already happening in games just look at MW2 and Warzone. They removed the national flag calling cards for every nation but added all the alphabet and trans flags. And saying bad words is a massive no no now with people getting banned for swearing in a 18+ game.

The Young Ones on bbc2 in the early 80s seems like the last time a mega left TV comedy was funny, lampooning their own lefty characters whilst hating Thatcher, weirdly enough, the same time 'identity' became political in the UK. Imagine Citizen Smith, now ffs! "Power to the people!", if only.

I get the Movie/TV production time lag thing of course and it's a great point, but there is still time to course correct once producers see which way the winds are blowing. That plus box office losses would seem to be the thing that stops a production mid shoot in order to re-tool stories and scripts in order to turn a production around. Perhaps that's why all the Star Wars movies are being delayed, why Indiana Jones has been re-shot a half dozen times.
