Marc Rigau just added these on my truck in the rear. I feel there is no wheel hop and makes my truck ride like a “Cadillac” like some people say. My F-150 has 45k miles so my old shocks are not bad. Just not as smooth as these.

  • @universalchiro

Great video, this guy knows his stuff. I started the task, but the two 18mm sockets that I had for my wrench, one was not deep enough and the bolt wouldn't allow a solid fit, and the other 18mm socket was deep deep and I couldn't get it on the nut on top of the shock because of the frame. So I went to Home Depot and bought an 18 mm wrench for $5.
Then I had trouble loosening the nuts because I do not have any power tools. I sprayed Blaster (penetrating catalyst for rust and frozen parts), then hit it with a hammer, then it finally came loose.
All told, I finished in an hour and a half (I'm slow). The instructions were spot on. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
One thing I learned that really, really saved me was knee pads.
Holy cow, I changed my strut and shock assembly the day before and my poor knees were hurting so bad from being on the concrete floor.
I highly recommend knee pads. Oh, I also swear by the thin black gloves sold at Walmart for $2. The save your hands and fingers.
And I use brake cleaner on the areas to clean them up as I go. I also recommend this for proper fitting. A must if you don't want to ruin your threads.

    • @jadd6810
      @jadd6810 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@jsol888 I only had 16,000 miles when I changed them so the originals weren't that bad on daily driving. There was a huge improvement towing though. The porpoising is gone. Last week I towed our travel trailer with 30 gallons of freshwater and 10 gallons this week and it was a vast improvement! We just need to get manufacturers to start putting in baffles like they do with fuel tanks to stop the sloshing around.

I installed these exact same shocks last year on my 2011 platinum after reading many reviews. I was stumped on which direction to install them in! Boot up or boot down? After much reading and finally a call to bilstien, I was told you should be able to read the sticker on the shock without standing on your head! That's the right way! Love 'em. They greatly improved the ride quality on my truck. Now I want to install front ones to match. Plan on making a video for the front?

Did this today. Mine did not seem to be as compressed with the green band. Was unable to get a prybar under it the way the video shows. Had to muscle it on by pushing up on the shock with my hand. Took awhile but got it on. That was the left one. When I did the right one there seemed to be a little more room around the shock. I installed the bottom first so I could grab the top of the shock and push up on it with more leverage into the top well. That one only took 10 minutes. Did improve the ride.

2015 f 150 xl 5.0: old shocks came off no prob, new, shocks installed no prob, which is nice bc I don't own an impact wrench cordless or otherwise...ty for the guidance!

Thank you for your awesome technical expertise, are these a good replacement for replacement of the air strut suspension system on the 2007 Lincoln navigator l Ultimate, if not what is your recommended replacement. Respectfully James Hutch

Great Video! I love these Bilstein 5100 shocks. Ride is so much smoother on my 14 F150.
I think I installed them upside down because the instructions that came with them are not clear but they still work great. Again, thanks for another great video!

@@cheizaguirre5494 I did not. Priorities changed, but I have heard of many f150 owners on Facebook that have used the 5100's for their f150.

Thank you very much for all your videos FordTechMakuloco!! I'm planning on replacing mine with the Bilsteins and was wondering if the shocks need to be primed first or it doesn't really matter??
I saw another video on youtube that someone else posted and he was saying that you need to prime them first. Being a truck driver i've heard many times people saying that you have to prime the shocks before you install them for an example on a tag axle in order for the shocks to work properly, also had to deal with that issue few times

Quick question: When you talk about tightening the bolts to spec, are you completely switching over to hand tools to do it? or do you start first with a impact wrench and then finish with a torque wrench or other to tighten the bolts? I'm new to all of this and seeking to learn. Btw, I appreciate your videos and thank you for posting them.

I know my impacts so I can snug them with the impact and finish torqueing to spec after.
