  • In this video I show you an overview of the Baofeng UV-5R ham radio. Everything in this video also applies to other Baofeng radios like the Baofeng BF-F8HP, Baofeng UV-5X & UV-5G as well as rebranded Baofeng radios like the TIDRadio UV-5R and TIDRadio GM-5R radios.
I review all the buttons, and all of the basic operations of the UV5R.

I'm impressed! A guy that actually spelled Vise-Grip correct! Even that "Vice Grip Garage" clown failed that. I mean, how does one grip "vice"? Isn't that like embracing sin or bad behavior? Egad.
No, Murica, that cast iron clamping thing on your workbench is NOT a vice. It is a vise. And, no, your local Crime Farmer LEO's do not have a vise squad. That is a *vice* squad.

This Happy Ham has several. The oldest is about 6, maybe 7 years old. The poor thing's lived a hard life, but it's still ticking. The backlight LEDs gave up the ghost a few years back and the volume control got scratchy (cleaned right up)...and the SMA antenna connector has come loose a few times, but the radio still works just fine. Best twenty I ever spent!

I belong to a small hunt club, and 3 years ago we bought about 10 of the F8GPs from someone who supplied them already programmed. None of us are tekkies, and all of us have our radios locked. So we don't screw them up. I just bought a back-up UV-5R, and was nervous about setting it up. Figured I didn't really need to program it for basic Send/Receive operation. Your video confirmed that, and provided clear instructions on what to do to get it working, plus how to manipulate it and the others we have, if we ever want to change anything. Much appreciated!

The most impressive addition so far has been the NA-771G for my *Tidradio GM-5R GMRS radios which reduced my SWR readings to nearly perfect @ 1.01 :1 - 1.05 :1 throughout the GMRS spectrum.

My first thought was another UV-5R video? What else is there to cover? But I had time to kill with my coffee and watched anyway. Guess what, I learned a few more things about my radio, and not just the UV-5R but my UV-9G and UV-9R as well. Keep up the great videos!!

Great video Randy, I’m a happy HAM who started with, and still uses a UV5R. Love my radio for what it is, and love your videos for what they are. This video showed me things about my radio I was ignorant about, thank you, and f@@k the sad hams!

Not my favorite, but definifely one of the best radios in existence. Not because of the spurious emissions, poor quality, etc., but because it is cheap and extremely versatile. I got two more on the way. Of the six I've bought since the unlocking video, they're unlocked and working great except one which always resets itself when recharged (but stays unlocked.)

Bro.. just got my new Baofeng and more than happy I found your dry wit and Steven Wright type humor. Yes, I will follow what you say. I like humor, although some of it may be out of the range of some antennas -- wink wink...subbing and keep it up. Laughter is still the best medicine.

There are far more Ham operators that do or have used a Baofeng radio than most any other radio.
    You are right Randy!

I just got my uv-5r couple weeks ago and the little instruction booklet is small print so magna needed to read and I don't do well with that. Found your video first and a good intro into radio functions although at times you went over the battery way too much lol but non the less good overall. Will be looking at all your vids until I feel confident on how to properly operate this radio. I am on TikTok and will be making a video urging people to buy one as I believe we will need them in the near future. Not getting a commission lol but as a important piece of survival gear it's vital. I might mention you if that's ok.

Your sense of humor and ease at explaining things is great. I'm new to this, as I mentioned on another video. I recently got a Baofeng GT-5R, which the company claims, as well as another TH-camr, is the legal version of the UV-5R. Do you know anything about this new GT-5R? Differences? The two seem to be identical. Thanks in advance.

Hey guy, thank you for helping all of us newbies through these trying times! And I mean I'm trying not to throw this thing at a brick wall! We have the UV-5G model and I upgraded one antenna but I can't get the antenna off the other one. Do you know what kind of screw is in that tiny little hole?
