  • Have you just got a Baofeng UV-5R? Do you want to know what you should listen to?
This video tries to show you the best frequencies to listen to on your new radio, and how to program the radio (save the frequencies for a later date).
    I hope this helps,

At 19:10 you say if you get someething on the 145.500 frequency it will automatically switch over - do you need TDR (menu 07) on for this to happen? Just got my Baofeng & have followed your set up in this video but wasn't sure about TDR. Thanks. Really enjoying your channel btw.

You are quite right... so I have pinned this helpful comment. For the automatic change from A to B, TDR in menu 7 needs to be 'on'. Thanks!

Great to find some U.K based information. I recently bought my UV-5R from Baofeng U.K they are local company based in Portsmouth. There is a lot of fake rubbish & claims on E-bay Amazon, in relation to Baofeng Radios. Several sites specify 400Watt output etc, and the prices are quite expensive. Baofeng U.K will check out each radio, for any faults before dispatch & delivery times are within a week. I was a little dubious initially, but have since been very impressed with their service, and have ordered another. UV-10R & UV-5RIII Good to get some info here regarding repeater operations in my area. Keep up the good work.

Finally! I bought one of these last year and had no luck with it so it got tucked away in a draw somewhere. Dug it out last night as i wanted to try and connect to the ISS. No luck.... i then managed to finally put the repeater in correctly and instantly got a few people connecting, one was a ham radio club who operate at regular intervals so I am looking forward to listening in. First time I heard someone over HAM radio! Thanks so much for this great video! my mistake was I only set the transmit frequency not the receive.

Ben, you're a typical Nerd ..... Crooked Glasses, one side high, one side low ... I'm surprised you don't have tape holding them together. , However I'm a far older Nerd than you are, I started in HAM back in the early 60's growing up on a Midwestern US Farm, (mostly) ALL Farmers were HAM operators and my first radio of my own was a Heathkit tube model I have to completely assemble, including soldering on ALL the components onto a pretty crude circuit board and fight to get into the metal box. But I didn't wear glasses, so I wasn't an obvious "Nerd".

Also what would happen if I tryed to talk to a 140 mhz Chanel without a license, and one last question is that what channel(?) or frequency do I go to if I want to talk to that friend and the only way to communicate is in a 140 mhz channel(?)

Heyya m8 i hope i can learn more from you as i bought the Baofeng UV-5RTP and i have never found anything to listen to and there is alot local to me. I must be doing soemthing wrong but after watching this i can see where i could be going wrong in the programming. Thanks again and one last thing what would you recommend for a good handheld for even picking up air traffic as i am in a flight path between Glasgow and Edinburgh so its always busy in the skys 😁😁 hope to hear back from you and i have now suscribed to your channel cheers mate

Thanks for the great video, Ben! Quick question... when I input the offset for my local repeater (quite near to you, by the way!), I hit menu to save it but it doesn’t seem to save it. I come out of the menu and go back in, and the offset is back on 000.000 again? Any thoughts? Cheers!

Thank you sir. I'm new to your channel, and new to HAM radios (no license yet). Learning as I go along. I do have the Baofeng GT-5R, which supposedly is the "legal" version of the UV-5R... but to me, both seem to be identical. I have programmed the radio in several ways so far, thanks to you and some other YTbers. In regards to this video of yours, I think everything went well during my programming of it, and I thank you for it. But, just wondering... at the end of this video, you mentioned that it could take 24 hours for us to start hearing some others chatting thru the channel; is there a specific reason for that? Just wondering. I'm totally new to this, but very interested in becoming an amateur. After programming everything as you recommended today, I did send a transmit signal for testing, and recieved one right back, so I think all is good, but I can't transmit since I don't have a license yet. Thanks in advance! Great video by the way!

Hi Ben, Im about to get one of these radios. I live on an island with around 800 km². There is a local repeater (only one) on the top of hills. Do you think this radio range can cover the whole area ?
Thanks for your vid, its been really helpful.

    Good day sir.
Still very much in the learning mode, but how many repeaters can I program into this radio?
The reason I'm asking is, that the menu seems to allow only for one (unless it overwrites the parameters everytime I program a new one?)
