@@anthonydantona8672 yes and no. You can triangulate any transmitting frequency that's broadcast. So if someone really wanted you they could track you down and see what you're using up close. As long as You dont cause interference and the radio is set wright. No one is going to know or even care. Im sure the FCC knows that this is being done, They just dont want to know about it or have their noses rubbed in it in my Opinion. Thanks for the education and Facts.
I only use Motorola gear for 2M/440 and wouldn't hesitate to use one on GMRS. What chirp are you talking about on your buddy's Motorola? That MDC1200 squwak/data burst? Though it is sometimes fun to turn it on just to piss off uptight hams who flip out when they hear it, claiming (falsely) "THAT'S ILLEGAL!!!"
I've had this discussion with others. And they go on and on about GMRS certification. But there is this little phrase that I read in part 95.1761(c) that says "... unless such transmitter is also certified for use in another radio service for which the frequency is authorized and for which certification is also required..." which to me means if say a radio was certified prior to the GMRS frequencies being carved out then that radio is legal. The UV-5R was certified in 2012, the CFR certifying GMRS radios was done in 2017. At least that is the information I could find. Even the FCC press release said they did not want to ban legacy radios because so many were in use. Please prove me wrong.

😂😂😂😂. I love your approach and humor. Though i almost vomited in my mouth when I saw what looked to be Adam Schiff on your wall..i enjoyed the vid. Was that an easter egg?
I always thought not being type certified for multiple radio services was just a way to keep the costs down. In all honesty the gmrs boofangs are probably the same radio inside as the ham blaufungs.
The GMRS UV-5R is 100% the same on the inside as the ham version. The only difference is the programming/firmware and a type-acceptance sticker from the FCCs.
Good question. I think it has to do with the radio's capabilities. GMRS has had specific TX power restrictions, especially in the FRS part of the designated freqs. Out of the box, a UV5R can't be set low enough to comply with the lower wattages. Plus, GMRS is UHF and the UV5R can also TX on VHF and a GMRS oper has no licensing to TX anywhere there. Yes, you can program them not to TX there but the capabilities are still there. Mainly I think it's because "Uncle Charlie" just has a raging stiffy for Baofengs because they're SO opened up. Far out of the legit ranges for lawful operation.
I personally believe it’s because of the licensing, they feel GMRS people aren’t as invested in the use and function of the radios as the ham guys are because GMRS is essentially pay to play and hams have to study a bunch of stuff and earn their “privileges”.
I know you was talking about GMRS, however I thought i would post that on the FCC page it says FRS radios must have permanently fixed antennas. so that gm5r radio can only be used for GMRS not FRS. Or did they change this rule?
Since 1996 I have been using all types of radios, Alinco, Yeasu, Vertex and some were modified, used on Emergency frequencies, GMRS, HAM and ..... wait... ive never even seen the FCC holy cow!!!
In my unsolicited opinion, if you use a Boof Wang, triple check your frequencies when you set them and you should be OK. They are the same radio as the GMRS ones but not locked to GMRS channels. Yes, channels because they are preset and you can’t change them except for PL tone.
Dude great humor ! I really enjoy the platform. I got this type of radio and A GRms radio just in case of disaster. I don’t know shit about them so I had a young man ham radio nut program it for me. I still don’t know shit but I listen to noaa !
I kinda figure that the whole reason to make specifications for a certified radio is to make sure the bands are used responsibly. If someone is smrt enough to configure their UV-5R to cooperate with the guidelines set forth I feel the FCC turns a very blind eye. But they do want their license fees.
As someone who clearly doesn't know much about radios, if some outlaw was wanting to get a radio, and going into it they knew they were wanting their radio to have access to both ham/GMRS frequencies, would they get the UV5R, or the uV 5G? And, if their radio does access both, would it be considered "Unlocked"??
I just got my GMRS license but have not radio yet. For SHTF am I better off with a UV5r that I never touch until an emergency (which I believe the FCC allows) since I can't use it on the frequencies I am allowed to? Do I get a GM-5r that to use on my property with my wife (Who I believe my GMRs license covers her too) and also use it for emergencies? (or does no one listen to GMRS so there's no point in using it to reach other people outside my group?)
Once I read Randy's millisecond disclaimer, I watched his left hand holding the UV-5R and you can actually see him slowly turn the radio off before the pretends to TX. He was not TX'ing, and if he was I still doubt the FCC would got to any effort to try and prosecute anyhow. Glad the FCC will leave me alone, I have heaps of these things and give to the kids so they can go play commando in the bush outback. And of course the FCC has no jurisdiction over my country and our equivalent dont care what you use or if you even have a license.
I ordered a UV5R to make sure no one else could abuse it on GMRS... Only to find out the new ones couldn't be unlocked... so I got a Quansheng UVK5... which is still unlockable. Thankfully I got that filthy thing off the street. :)
I love your videos. The uv5R is a decent radio. It is meant to operate on amateur radio frequencies only. That said. I don't believe that it cannot be used as a GMRS radio as it applies to the United States. Users enjoy this radio and as far as I am concerned, if it used for GMRS?.... I think there are bigger fish to fry than the Baofengthing. I will always keep a bright RED Baofengthing.... in case I might need to help someone in an (emergency) that is not an amateur radio person. Off the amateur radio bands. That said I I will follow the rules.
It is meant to be used on every frequency that it will operate on. That's how the Chinese designed it to operate. Does it comply with US law? Who cares?
How would they know what radio you are using? I used to have a Base 10/11 Meter and a 2 Meter 440 license station I had a Wizard built amp 3CX 10,000A7 25,000 peak it would turn tv off or back out come through your speakers in your house or car and I ran system in a small country town in Texas and I never got any mail from the FCC or any knock on the door I had smaller amps as well we had to move back to the city and I sure that if I got everything out of storage and back on the air with the 10/11 meter station I would probably get a letter to stop running over power and over Modulation and the safety from the RF Radiation ☢️ would be a serious issue
Hi! I hope you can answer my question, If I can't use the GMRS/FRS frequency, then what frequency can I use on the BAOFENG UV-5R? To be able to talk to my family saying I don't want to get a fine or 10 years in prison. Reason I bought 2 of these is because they were readily available on Amazon and I'm a preper, I want to use them in case of infrastructure failure do to a terrorist attack, earthquake or what ever comes along. Thank you for your answer in advance.

Sometimes it can take a day or two for the idiots to come out of the woodwork.
@@TheNotaRubicon Hey hey, hey, I can hear you !
Don’t adjust you squelch knob just yet…some old bat in a shack in Iowa is writing their rough draft as we speak. Policies are for a reason you know! 😂
Give “Some”People” time to wake up from their naps. Just wait, it’s coming.
I have found you to be worth my time.
Funny stuff, yet full of … stuff.
I appreciate the Rush reference. 😢 Miss him.
If the country goes belly up I doubt there will be any FFC goons around to police the perceived issue. LOL
There won't be any teachers around to help you get that GED, either. Sad.
@@waytospergtherebrowhy would you need a GED then lmao
Love your nod to the late great Maha-Rushie!
You crack me up! But seriously I have 2 Baofengs and cannot understand them at all. Will keep trying though.
Hahahha, love your delivery !
I have old booo-fung radios! Day go here nd day go dare and everywhere.
The question I have is "why" do the FCC rules say the radio needs to be type accepted? Love the Rush reference in this (and others) video.
Because being a tax payer funded government entity that answers to no one. It gives their pencil pushers something to do
Because industry corporations lobby govt to make rules that benefit them, simple as that
@mcgrath16511 - correct, except that the FCC is not taxpayer funded.
LOl for the quick flash of disclaimer at 1:31 :)
I would love to see you do an unboxing of the Uv-s9 and a break down and dirty with it
NEW FAVORITE CHANNEL.
Mr. Rubi-not-con, ham, turkey, gm, RS with or without stuffing?
Awesome work thank you for all your videos 😂 Now Waiting for talkpod A36 review
Randy, is that a picture of Uncle Adam in the backdrop, is it 😁
As someone who clearly doesn't know much about radios, if some outlaw was wanting to get a radio, and going into it they knew they were wanting their radio to have access to both ham/GMRS frequencies, would they get the UV5R, or the uV 5G? And, if their radio does access both, would it be considered "Unlocked"??
I have an amature radio license so what settings do i need in chirp to be able to TX/RX on 2m/70cm bands too?
Yea I just got mine and can’t unlock
Unlock? I just chirped mine fine. What more does unlocking do?
whats with shifty shiff?
Who cares?
Are there any Ham Radios that are GMRS Type Approved? Or GMRS Ham Radio Combos that are legal?
Love the Rush Limbaugh reference!!! 😂😂😂
Can do a video on the uv17 or whatever that gets air band and such
What brand radios would you suggest for walkie to walkie talk?, mainly using for camping trips, mountains and rough terrain.
You should watch this video, which answers that exact question: th-cam.com/video/uSZ3giJX554/w-d-xo.html
I have a Wouxun KG-UVD1P. Does the Baofeng UV-5R restrictions apply to my radio too?
The UV-5R is a ham radio and the FCC says that to use a ham radio you must have a ham radio license and transmit only one ham radio frequencies.
I still liked and subbed because it was a good video not because you begged me to. BTW if you are a true owner of the UV-5R you would know its off because it dont have the battery.
I started saying Boofwang and a military instructor of mine didn’t get it but laughed when I explained
