    I asked for a PS1 and tony hawk for christmas on year, I was gifted this instead and could not have been happier. Seeing these skateboarders as my introduction to the sport had a huge influence on me. Daewon was probably my favorite skateboarder since day one and was always at the top of the game in my mind!

    The Burnside level is based on the real life location in Portland Oregon "the Burnside projects". Played it a lil while ago and it really took me back because the level is how it was in the late 90s and not now. Real step back in time.

    I remember the first time I ever played grind session was on a playstation magazine demo disk my mom bought me at jewel. I was so awestruck how amazing the game was and that there was another game out there like tony hawk but different. my family was poor so I could never get actual game but playing those two levels in the demo kept me happy. a few years later a buddy of mine gave a playstation underground demo disk and on it was a small documentary about the making of grind session. on it was skateboarding, devs talking about the game and ed templeton giving his thoughts on the game at a video game expo showcasing the game. I would watch that video on repeat. once the game finally dropped to $20 at Walmart, I begged my dad to buy me the game on my birthday and he did. since then I go back at least once a year to play grind session and think about what could have been if Shaba games hadn't sold to activison. grind session will always hold a special place in my heart and i hope one day that skateboarding video games will return to their former glory.

    I remember first moving here in Southern California and my mom took me and my brother to a pawn shop to get one game. We picked Crash Bandicoot 3 but the guy said that it was the wrong case and the actual game Inside was Grind Session. We figured it would be worth a shot anyway and man it was a real treat back then. We weren't very experienced with video games but what it introduced to us was a plethora of different genres of games in general.

      Same here and for me graphically and fun to play I hope Electronic Arts made Street Skater 3 if not for playstation for the playstation 2 and made it Grind Session Style. You know what I mean in Grind Sess and Pro Skater every press of the button and Directional Pad there are basic exhibitions you could do and do it in a combo. In Street Skater once you get big air in a ramp press left circle or up square it does combo exhibitions. You do it with no effort. You know Electronic Arts should have made the controls like Pro Skater and Grind Session because, sound, music and fun factor Street Skater has it except the game play experience is a little bad.
      Play Skate its a whole new experience in skating games.

    • @RadRatVideo
      @RadRatVideo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah the controls were definitely a little weird, but they did it so early that there was nobody to copy yet.
      I've played all the Skate games, but I still have a soft spot for the original PS1 stuff.

      Me I haven't played skate but its more realistic than Tony Hawk and Grind Session. To me I miss playing Pro Skater 2 and Grind Session and Street Skater 1 & 2.
      To Under Ground Under Ground 1 is better than Under Ground two over all specially the simple story.
      Which do you Like Project 8 or Proving Grounds?
      I am planning to make a realistic Skateboarding Game. Impossible to jump to heights that are too high. Impossible to long jump far gaps. A skating game where you could strengthen the whole body of your skater specially her knees, hips and ankles. There will be combos but you know in real life there is only a limit on how many continuous exhibitions you could do flip grind flip, manual flip manual flip manual flip. I was skateboarder before that's why I know what I'm talking about.
      Combo exhibitions in Tony Hawk you know that you can't do those in real life unless you did an exhibition that is possible in real life like flip manual flip or flip grind flip. You can't jump very high up in the air do a grab then once you go down on the ground you nose manual. You know what I mean do you understand me, A MORE REALISTIC SKATEBOARDING GAME.

    • @RadRatVideo
      @RadRatVideo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Underground is pretty good, but I wasn't a fan of Underground 2. I think it got too heavily involved in the whole Bam Margera/"Jackass" stuff.
      Proving Grounds wasn't bad, but I wasn't impressed by Project 8.
      Yeah I would love to see that! I'm hoping Project:Session turns out to be pretty realistic, but there's always room for more.

      +Jonathan Patton (1080P) I remember being so confused that his stance was listed as "Irregular". I used to know a kid back in the day who rode around and pushed in one stance but did all his tricks in the other stance, and he called himself 'irregular' too. I was going to touch on it in the video and then I realized, after all these years, that he's just goofy and he was trying to be funny.

    Great review! I have been playing through this since I got it last week. I was really impressed with the animations and the grind mechanics. I am glad you addressed the grinds in the review because it really was pretty innovative at the time. I have really been into replaying these games lately, so I am going to recommend a few of the ones I have recently been jammin' on:
    Thrasher Skate and Destroy (PS1)
    MTV Skatebaording (PS1)
    Simpsons Skateboarding (PS2)
    Skate or Die 1,2 (NES)
    T&C Surf Designs (NES)
    As for longevity, I never stop playing Skate 1,2,3. I think they really reached the pinnacle of skateboard games with these. For fun, I have been thinking of recreating some of the greatest levels from these PS1 era games in the Skate 3 park creator. If you ever try the same I would love to see some footage!

    • @RadRatVideo
      @RadRatVideo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AmpersandFB Thanks for the recommendations, but I reviewed MTV already! Thrasher is definitely on my list. It's a great game. I'm not sure how it still holds up though because I haven't played it in a long time.
      I've never played Simpsons, but I want to cover that one too. I also have XGames Skateboarding and Evolution Skateboarding from the PS2 era to get to.
      I haven't played any of the NES games, except in passing. Maybe I'll dive into those and see if I can actually figure out how to play them.

    • @AmpersandFB
      @AmpersandFB 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha oh man I totally forgot you already did that one. Evolution Skateboarding is on my list to get next. I don't think that I have ever tried it out.

    • @AmpersandFB
      @AmpersandFB 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By the way, Skate or Die 2 for NES has a halfpipe with a spine you can skate if you press Select at the title screen. I played it for hours back in the day. Look up some footage, it is actually really good!

    • @RadRatVideo
      @RadRatVideo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AmpersandFB It's pretty good. Some of the tricks are weird, and there's an annoying announcer guy, but the graphics are good, and it's interesting. XGames is basically the same, but worse in every way. Interestingly, Bob Burnquist passed on Pro Skater 3 so he could be in XGames. Probably a bad choice.

    Rad! I loved this game so much because it has Dave Carnie in his costume! I really am a huge Dave Carnie fan from the Big Brother magazine days, and even got in touch with him, which he then invited me to visit him at the LFP building. I made him laugh a few times and he autographed my Grind Session - "Runs Good. Farts." The best move in any game is grinding with Carnie in this game. Another great video!

    Grind Session was the only skateboarding game I ever owned and I had it as a small kid. When I grew up I thought that it was probably not that good considering no one ever talked about or remembered it and because my parents had a penchant for getting me bargain bin games and versions of everything.
    So one day I got an itch and had to play it, and I bought it off e-bay for pennies expecting to just relive some nostalgia - but oh man, I got so addicted to that game for days. I practically played this game like it was my job for a week, except that once I got off work I went home and played grind session some more. As someone who didn't get to play very many video games in my childhood, the ones I did get to play are very near and dear to my heart and it was so nice to play this one and realize my childhood was true.
    Funny story: I was a super stupid kid and one day I found a hammer and wanted to smash something with it. Guess what I chose? My Grind Session disc. I immediately realized my mistake, knew I wouldn't get another disc, and started crying haha

    A demo of this game came on a "Jampack" demo disc featuring the first public demo of THPS2-- a very choice place to put a first impression! The THPS2 demo is small: only two skaters to play as in one level (and the level is Marsielle, a competition run level, AND the big secret area in the level has been stripped out!). So, you have your 3 minutes of fun in the THPS2 demo and then switch over the Grind Session demo, which had a lot more to do in it. I wonder how many people they hooked just by having a demo in the right place and time.

    Grind Session was so good back when it came out. Thrasher and Grind Session were the only real competitors to THPS. I gotta give Grind Session more praise though because its the only game I own that somehow duplicated itself. I opened the case once and all of a sudden there were two discs inside and I can't think of how or why that would have happened lol.

    This was my favorite game on Playstation. I had a routine down to get all the keys on the first run. There were some cheats for the game from what I remember, but one thing that I did maybe 4 times in all the years I played it was going up the half pipe and hovering just above the edge on the way down. I was able to do any trick, minus manual, and a grind move would cancel it out and make me grind. I racked up a crazy amount of points doing that. I did it on accident so I don't know how it was done. I haven't checked recently but when I was a kid and even in my late teens, I never seen anyone post a cheat for it or do it online. Maybe if I checked now I might find it 🤷‍♂️

    this was a great game and so much more like real skating compared to other skateboard games.
    i never completed grindsession 100%,and when PS2 and other game consoles came out i ended up giving it and all other PS1 games to a friends young son..today i wish i still had it(and the original overhead view GTA) and may go look for those two games to buy once again.
    the first tony hawk was also great but became more and more unrealistic on each release. THPS2 was good but started the unrealistic trend THPS took with the rest of the series.
    IMO grind session is by far the superior game over THPS1.
    my buddy knew and skated with PIGPEN and my friend said that pigpen spent most of the $10,000 he got for appearing in the game on heroin .

    Its pretty cool Pigpen is in this game but I gotta ask, why? I mean he wasn't exactly well known was he? I mean I know him as Neil Heddings friend who helped pour Burnside but there had to have been way more popular pros they could have chosen. Even Heddings himself. Pretty hardcore choice for a videogame that's supposed to appeal to the masses.

    Yeah GS was bad ass. First played the demo then played it for hours with someone who had it. This is probaly the one other game that's as good as the OG THPS. I might pick up a copy and get Daewon to sign it.

    There's nothing I hate more than a countdown timer in a skateboarding game. I do feel bad for those devs tho. It looks like they made a good game but missed on the timing
