I remember playing as a young kid and getting sunk into it hard. Plus, the difficulty curve definitely hit me as the game rolled on as the later game hits. Some of those pro challenges and the red goals afterwards were frustrating and challenging as a kid. Fun though, loved THPS4 a lot
You really hit the nail on the head with your level description. There is some vibe/ kind of positive atmosphere to these levels which makes them really enjoyable to spend time in. Same thing for me with the levels of thug2.
This game gets a lot of hate, everyone says they all went downhill after 3, but that's bollocks, THPS4 was the first one I played, The summer in between primary school and secondary school back in 2005. I love this game tho, pretty much every level besides shipyard is sunny and reminds me of summer vacation, sitting indoors playing THPS4 before I go out to actually skate, also most of the clothes and environment textures in this game are some of the best in any 6th gen TH game, I played THPS3 after this cos my mate had it, then eventually I got a copy and didnt like it as much, I agree with the time limit thing. THAW was the next game I got after THPS4 and it was such an epic leap, and that game also gets a lot of hate, even tho imo it's right up there with THUG1 and love the punk rock aesthetic. THPS4 has a clean feel to it, kinda like THP8, THP8 is the proper Pro Skater 5 cos it takes what THPS4 did and expands on it. THPS4 also got me into rap music and ska punk. One mission in THPS4 does my head in is the Slalom run in Kona... I buy the slo-mo cheat for that mission (you can buy cheats and the game has a nice economy.) makes that mission a lot easier and also bam's pro challenge which is a nightmare.
I have this for the Gamecube and everything you say is 100% accurate! I absolutely adore this game and I spent so many hours playing it growing up. The soundtrack is just so nostalgic , Shipyard and Alcatraz are two of the best if not the best levels in the whole series IMO
This was actually the Tony Hawk game I mainly grew up with. This one & Pro Skater 3. But THPS4 was a VERY big influence on me & has always been my favorite of the series. It amazed me when I got online & found out so many didn't like this one.
THPS4 is my favorite as well. It was my intro to the series; I got it for my birthday in 02/03 and it's honestly one of my most nostalgic games. I remember friends and I putting in a low gravity cheatcode and trying to use Jango Fett's jetpack special to launch as I high as we could. The soundtrack was really great, and probably my first real experience with punk and ska.
I totally relate to you with the freestyle flatland combos. When I was a kid, that's all I would do for combos on challenges on THUG 1. Any high score challenge, all me and my brother would do is flatland tricks thinking it was the best way to get big combos. Pretty sure we were playing on easy. XD Also, as someone who recently got 100% in this game, even though you said you don't feel the need to, I do suggest going for 100% in THPS4. It gives you an excuse to do everything there is to do in the game you love. Despite a really lame reward such as Daisy. XD P.S: Shoutout to Jango Fett for having the most sick special in the game, Jango Jump Jett.
Nice glad to hear somebody else has the same history with the freestyle tricks as me. When you’re a kid it just feels like your almost cheating, like I thought I was a genius and figured out something about the game maybe no one else knew about. But I can guarantee you when I was a kid I was playing in easy lol. Really the main thing stopping me from getting 100% is doing all the gaps. I’ve actually never done that in any Tony hawk game, it just seems so daunting! One of these days I’ll find the will to do it though maybe
Playing as Eddie from Iron Maiden or Jango Fett for his special movie Jango Jump Jett made the game super fun to explore plus easy access to higher ledges and building momentum
What a nice birthday surprise. Granted my birthday ended 2 hours ago at the time of commenting but that's neither here nor there. Also shout outs to that early 2000s warmth. I wont bore you with my nostalgia for this time period for the 100th time but it's a feeling I miss dearly. It's like a childhood friend that you haven't talked to in ages and you end up wishing that you could go back to when times were simpler and had all the time in the world to have fun. At least that's how it is for me.
Hey happy birthday, dude!!!! Congratulations on being another year wiser and older and all that! And hey, man I couldn’t bore me with early 2000s nostalgia, I could talk about it all day long lol. These games are like time machines, that’s a big reason as to why I like them. We were really lucky I think to grow up during the PS2 era. It felt like games had so much mystery to them. I miss it dearly! I hear ya on wanting to go back sometimes, but hey we all gotta move forward through life and what not. I be nice to have a couple less responsibilities lol. Really I find a large amount of comfort in playing old games or watching old anime from the era. Especially if there ones I’ve never experienced before. Theres still a lot to discover, ya know? Thanks for watching like always, dude. Appreciate it a lot.
24:27 manualing the switchbacks isn't the hardest goal, you just need to understand a few things: 1. go as fast as possible. if you go slow, it will harm your balance meter a lot more due to the fact that the game will make your balance meter go faster depending on how long you have been manualing, not your speed. 2. get full special before you do the switchback, it'll make you go faster. now: it will take a few tries to get used to like just SPEEDING down this hill as fast as possible, but it's the best method i have for this mission. now i do consider myself pretty good at these games so while i might not struggle with it, doesn't mean ya exactly suck for struggling with it.
I agree most people I hear talk about the series talk about the first 3 or thug 1 and 2 being the best, but 4 will always be my favourite by a long shot. Jango Fett is also my favourite character in the series and I don't know anything about Star Wars. His jetpack special move is the best of the best, when you smash it out after a small ollie and just fly through the level, nothing beats that.
Nothing can replicate how good the tony hawk engine was. THPS1+2 remake got it right but its not 100% wish the original neversoft team got together and made tony hawk games again.
25:30 - That goal is tricky when you're out of practice but after you've been playing it solidly for a few days/weeks/months and learn which tricks are the best it isn't that hard to hit a 250k combo in that area. I remember a few years ago I was playing 2 player with a friend and we had to stop playing trick attack because I had been playing for months and was hitting 2-10mil+ each time while he was lucky to break 100k most of the time. When we played as kids, he would have been hitting the mil ranges non-stop too. It really is about the theory element. E.g. There are some tricks that net about 10k on their own and are quite easy to land (e.g. the 900) whereas other tricks only hit 300-1000. You have to be splicing in the golden tricks quite often. As soon as you know everything that's in your arsenal, and as long as your balance-meter management is solid, you can easily start breaking the million ranges every single time.
I certainly agree with you. The classic 2-minute timer gets all the love and attention usually, but while I enjoyed them, I mainly grew up with those later 4 games. I had THAW, then THUG1 and THUG2, then THPS4. I really love their style more than the classic trilogy. THAW and THUG1 are straight up some of my favorite games of all-time. THUG2 is great too, I once fell off it but rediscovered my love for it in the last couple years and feel it's one of the best in the series. (I think my ranking would be THAW, THUG1, I then go back and forth on whether I like THPS4 or THUG2 more) Those will always be the games in the series I love most and the ones I go back to the most. I've seen THUG1 get more attention and love nowadays, which is nice to see. Hopefully that happens with the others as well. Post-3, Pre-Project 8 can come off rather underrated at times. THPS4 is a game I didn't enjoy highly on my first playthrough years ago, but it is a game that I've enjoyed more and more with each playthrough. I still think I enjoy those other 3 more, but THPS4 holds up exceptionally well. Difficult game and long to 100% Career Mode, but the levels are pretty great, the soundtrack is amazing, and I'd say this is the most content rich Career Mode in the series. It's a great game!
This is imo the best one, me and my family got every thps game from the first to thug 2. Thps4 was just the most fun of them all. Just the right amount of freedom.
I will always love the first 3 games but pro skater 4 just changed everything. Pushing people into the ocean, crying out of frustration because I keep bailing 6 digit combos at the last second, breaking an elephant out of a zoo, and barreling down a hill on a shopping cart? Sing me tf up! THAW is my absolute favorite entry in the series, I hope you get to cover it sometime 🙂
Love the video, so many good points that I agree with, THPS4 is just amazing when I was young I never used to 100% complete it, but I literally can't just play it and not do it especially with THPS4 cos i love seeing the note that says "see you in thps5" which i obviously find even funnier now that we did get that 'game' and they probably would have never wrote that if they knew the future... But yeah for me the whole seires is so zen, I just zone out and have a magical time with no worries. BTW I keep noticing in people's videos that no one seems to know what the Goats are referencing, in short it's a tribute to a clan that formed during THPS3 online on ps2, they were called the Greatest Glitche Of All Time [or something along those lines](aka GGOAT) and NS just decided to include a goat in each subsequent game as a tribute to these people's, obviously they turned it into a funny/weird egg but still really cool of them to acknowledge it and do that!
I just started playing from 1+2 on PS4 from the 0 abilities. After finishing I wanted more so I'm currently on THPS4 on PS2 and damn - It is the hardest one from all of the classic Pro Skaters.
THPS 4 was the first skateboard game I ever played. A friend of mine got it for his ps2 and we would play the graffiti and the HORSE one with his little sister. Later i got the game for my self. Spent loads of hours in it. I love it! Some of the challenges were such a pain but it was so much fun even when i got frustrated. Also the music was rad!
I played it for the first time at a friend's house when I was 10 in 2005. I had been skating for maybe a year but had no idea what professional skateboarding looked like, so the intro completely blew my mind.
Just bought THPS4 on the Gamecube and I agree 100% with this videos. Somethin I also love is the “Set Cust Restart” feature, I thought EA’s “Skate” invented it 🤯
Been revisiting my ps2 collection and playing this one and you are right about the difficulty. No shame in using slow-mo and moon gravity cheats to get through sometimes for me.
THPS4 was my first so I'm probably biased, but I agree. I've tried playing the earlier titles but couldn't really get into them after starting with 4. The soundtrack imo is unmatched too and probably has a lot to do with kickstarting my lifelong love of punk rock.
doing a playthrough now and its still my fav by far, bigger and better in every way then the 1st three games and still used the same Arcady style then the more personal story style thug games. The voice acting and all the characters for the missions are so awesome.
Hardest goal for me was the pro goal in alcatraz, the one with the water tower. Took me about 100 million tries. Just completed it last week actually after 20 years of continuous tries.
as corny as this sounds , i wouldn’t be who i am without this game haha. rented it from blockbusted when i was like 7/8 (i’m 28 now) and then begged my dad to buy me it and then a skateboard haha. without this game i wouldn’t have gotten into skateboarding and all the music that i like and i wouldn’t have wanted a guitar. its crazy best game of the series imo plus THUG 1+2 and american wasteland were amazing. thats my childhood right there
4 having the “cheats” like slomo and disco mode were so fun. Always loved this game, then after living in Jacksonville and getting to skate Kona for years, it’s a top 5 game Also I went to Alcatraz last year and the game level is eerily spot on 😂
31:25 I actually know this. I don't recall if it was a video I watched or an article I read, but it was an interview with the guy who is actually taking the photos of Jenna. Someone during a meeting suggested putting a sexy girl in the game and everyone at the meeting was on board and enthusiastic about it. After the meeting the idea was more of a, "It'd be cool, but it's never gonna happen," kind of a thing. I don't remember if the girl being from the adult industry was part of the initial pitch, but someone at Neversoft starting asking adult actresses to be in the game and Jenna said yes. Now the way Mr. Photographer puts it is roughly,"Everyone at Neversoft working on THPS 4 was a huge nerd and kind of shy and socially awkward, so as soon as this beautiful girl walks into the office all these guys get nervous and clam up and start staring at the floor." Neversoft needed her photos to base her character model off of and that dude was literally the only one there that day with the cajones to pick up the camera.
My first Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Without this I'd have never heard of NWA, Iron Maiden, The Sex Pistols, AC-DC, De La Soul, Run-DMC, System of a Down and Toy Dolls. This game is a major, maaaajor part of my childhood.
Need Day/Night cycle with certain areas accessible because guards leave at night Or a gate closes, allowing you to grind/jump to new places only at night More REALISTIC stuff in the levels.......... bigger like GTA There should be people walking their dog.............. a robber robs someone and you can beat them up (yes INCLUDE PUNCHING in thps)
Just brought this for my 35 mid life crisis birthday got the motorbike running sweet got the bean bags ready to pick up this should b delivered the day b4 gna take a sweet ride on the bike then lax out in my nean bag jam some thps4 and state of emergency then watch some rocket power weekenders and aaaggghhh real monsters cant wait
The first 4 THPS games are the best for sure, I wouldn't discount the first 3, I would love to see a compilation game of 3 and 4 like they did with 1 and 2. IMO the 1 and 2 remake is the best tony hawk game to date. I was also a fan of American wasteland and underground 2.
thps 4, thug, and thug 2 - these are the masterpieces for me. thaw is good, 3 is alright, 2 is great, but it doesn't really hold up. but, man, thps 4 still fucking great, went through it the other day, had a blast
Was about to call you out on the switch backs when you got into the hard pro challenges. Like bro don't you remember that one shitty Mullen goal. Dope nostalgia, still my favorite till this day.
My favorite was t.h.u.g. It was the first one that took it to the next level since two for me. You could get off your board and climb stuff?????!!!! Also first one that had Prod and the create a park was awesome
I think that four on a gameplay standpoint was perfect... from the addition of the Spine Transfer, Freestyle for combos, the button combinations are a hue pivotal points for the evolution of the gameplay.... I feel if THPS3 had 4s controls, 4 wouldn't be talked about as good as it is. However, I believe that THPS4 is the START of the decline...
I played and loved THPS2 as a teen, but I just couldn't get into this one after I had bought it. I think the controls put me off, but I should try it out again if everyone praises it this much. I don't know what exactly the issue was.
I also love that Eddie is in this game but I wish he looked more unique, he just kinda looks like a zombie when they could've given him his soldier uniform or atleast give him hair like Killers Eddie
@anyone out there If you want the best experience playing this: Do yourself a favor and purchase it for PC (ebay, mercari, etc.) or download it (which is fine I guess since it's technically abandonware). Installed + played flawlessly on Windows 8.1 / 10 running at High. *Only thing i had to do was download + apply a widescreen fix. Google is your best friend to find a link.
Old school freestyle skating is still the best. Its what i started with as a teenager and its how i still skate. Mullen and valelly are always the goats
I spent like 3 months playing this game nonstop everyday in 8thgrade in like 07, i was 13 almost 14. Ive been playing this series since 01? Ill cosign this being a master piece
I'm a little over halfway through this video and while I'm thinking about it it would be great to see a video comparing the last generation THPS4 to the newer generation version of THPS 4 such as PS1 versus PS2 versions
This one was my fave over many of em. THUG took me a while to enjoy. But Kona was sick.... jango... sick. And the bertslide... snake run stuff was cool. AGAIN I know im late to comment this game wasnt loved back then. 3 was favored. 4 has better levels.
THPS4 is the best game in the series. 3 and THUG are also great, but 4 was the perfect mix.

THPS4 thru THAW were all amazing
This game is the reason why I still play video games today and what got me hooked on bam Margera as a kid and viva la bam

The thought process is that Tony Hawk was targeted towards a male demographic and not zoomers who are either 20 genders or have ED
Fun fact atiba didn’t voice his character. He’s voice didn’t fit the voice over sound so they got another black guy to do it lol

I didn't feel guilty using the slomo cheat for the trolley race and manualing the switchbacks. Those two are the hardest goals for me.
as corny as this sounds , i wouldn’t be who i am without this game haha.
rented it from blockbusted when i was like 7/8 (i’m 28 now) and then begged my dad to buy me it and then a skateboard haha. without this game i wouldn’t have gotten into skateboarding and all the music that i like and i wouldn’t have wanted a guitar. its crazy
best game of the series imo
plus THUG 1+2 and american wasteland were amazing. thats my childhood right there
4 having the “cheats” like slomo and disco mode were so fun. Always loved this game, then after living in Jacksonville and getting to skate Kona for years, it’s a top 5 game
Also I went to Alcatraz last year and the game level is eerily spot on 😂
As a kid i played this for years without a memory card, hours and hours just on the first college level
3 was the first one to get it all right, but THUG was the one for me! I enjoyed Ride too
i also used flatland tricks for combos since i didnt know revert to manual was a thing until THUG2
I think we would be best friends, this is my favorite game of all time.
Need Day/Night cycle with certain areas accessible because guards leave at night
Or a gate closes, allowing you to grind/jump to new places only at night
More REALISTIC stuff in the levels.......... bigger like GTA
There should be people walking their dog.............. a robber robs someone and you can beat them up (yes INCLUDE PUNCHING in thps)
this game it so damn difficult imo!!! I've completed every regular goal except the Kona slalom and elephant skitch at the zoo.
The first 4 THPS games are the best for sure, I wouldn't discount the first 3,
I would love to see a compilation game of 3 and 4 like they did with 1 and 2.
IMO the 1 and 2 remake is the best tony hawk game to date.
I was also a fan of American wasteland and underground 2.
wait thats defff not Atibas voice lmao
This is great. I don't remember much from ps4 but i remember the manual tricks alot
Tony Hawk's Underground is imo the best Tony Hawk game.
the 4th is absolutely beautiful and definitely the best from the series for me.
thps 4, thug, and thug 2 - these are the masterpieces for me. thaw is good, 3 is alright, 2 is great, but it doesn't really hold up.
but, man, thps 4 still fucking great, went through it the other day, had a blast
You're literally bringing back Tony Hawk games without a game release you're a legend love these games
I thought I found a new channel to watch but then boom last upload 2-3 years ago 🥲
This and 5 are the only ones I’ve never played. This one just always avoided me for whatever reason I never saw it in stores growing up
Was about to call you out on the switch backs when you got into the hard pro challenges.
The manual goal isn't hard if you hold the jump button while manualing since you go faster
Amazing video, wild I’m getting recommended this now
Best Tony Hawks for me
I played and loved THPS2 as a teen, but I just couldn't get into this one after I had bought it.
28:55 I was JUST THINKING that it's kund if like a fighting game
"There's a cool Tone here"
Yeah Tony is pretty rad huh 😎
dayum i felt the same playing this gem🙌
440th subscriber!! Great video, good luck on TH-cam my friend
@anyone out there
If you want the best experience playing this: Do yourself a favor and purchase it for PC (ebay, mercari, etc.) or download it (which is fine I guess since it's technically abandonware).
The San Francisco manual one was also very difficult
2:50 ahh i remember when i had that board
THPS 4 Life!!.. ☮️
Yesssss❤❤❤❤
flatland manual trick were added in thps3 not 4. in-fact they were nerfed in 4
Great video
I spent like 3 months playing this game nonstop everyday in 8thgrade in like 07, i was 13 almost 14. Ive been playing this series since 01? Ill cosign this being a master piece
I need to Meet this kind of people who likes to play this games
I beat the manual the switchbacks goal on the dolphin emulator on my phone using touch screen controls
Btw, this game has a native widescreen mode
Still waiting for that THUG video man ❤❤
katamari music in background i sub immediately
And let’s not forget Eddie and Boba Fett being unlockable
The first masterpiece is pro3 Imo its better than 4 by a small bit. Both are amazing and in top 5 of the franchise
THUG 2 or THPS 4?
This game wasnt so much Jackass-y. Shenanigans were a huge part of 90s skate culture
For my money, the order goes 3, 2, 1, THUG1, THAW, THUG2, then 4. Maybe switch THAW and THUG2.
Great video! Also, how are you so good at the game lol
THPS4 is definitely a masterpiece but the first of the series? Nah.
Tip for the Kona Snake Run… set all of your stats to 0. It makes it so much easier! Trust me, you’ll thank me later.
I spent SO MANY hours playing online with people doing glitches. This and thug.
I'm a little over halfway through this video and while I'm thinking about it it would be great to see a video comparing the last generation THPS4 to the newer generation version of THPS 4 such as PS1 versus PS2 versions
Daisy is not out of place, she is just Private Carrera 4 xD
I just found this. I hope you’re doing well
Spent countless hours playing THPS games.
Loved everyone up until THUG1,then I went downhill imo.
This one was my fave over many of em. THUG took me a while to enjoy. But Kona was sick.... jango... sick. And the bertslide... snake run stuff was cool. AGAIN I know im late to comment this game wasnt loved back then. 3 was favored. 4 has better levels.
Man you’re making me really appreciate 4 🎉 thank you!
