Dude, I still can't believe you still only got 50K subs. You deserve so much more recognition, from your older stuff to your newer vids. Always well paced; analytical, informative and well-explained reviews; funny segments and on-camera goofs/physical comedy; great line delivery (you getting extremely pissed constantly reviewing the TH levels is always a treat to rewatch); really expressive faces and speech that incredibly translates your frustrations and appraisal; and to top it all off great scripts about really cool topics/games.

Grind Session is yet another game I've seen thanks to a PlayStation demo disc (this time, it was the PlayStation Underground Jampack Winter 2000), and while there was no demo of it (there is a demo of Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX in there), the video talking about the game is quite interesting. It is always fascinating to see some behind the scenes content regarding skateboarding games, and how intricately they design it.
Man, I’m so glad that one of my favorite TH-camrs finally have reviewed this gem. ❤️
I didn’t grow up with any of the Tony Hawk games until THUG, so this game holds LOADS of nostalgia for me as it was one of those weird games my Memaw had.

It would've been awesome to see a proper sequel for this IP, I bet Shaba could've made an awesome Tony Hawk competitor on the ps2 or 3

I really hope one of the games you're reviewing for Hawktober is AirBlade. I think that's the one of the best alternatives to Pro Skater.

This was an amazing alternative to THPS, I played the hell out of both of them back when they came out and Grind Session still holds a lot of memories and nostalgia
I'm sad we didn't get to see some of the other secret stuff like the aquarium and secret coins in the mansion, Master Ao and the secret truck convoy level
Yes, Grind Session is a great underated Game. Way better than THPS, but far below THPS2. For me, its a 7.5/10 because brings new things, like the tech lines and the trick attack that could be awesome on THPS, but gave GS the originality to be unique with those features. Controls were great for that moment, graphics ok, and camera response also great for the speed of the game. An awesome unknown title. Thanks for doing such a review on this one :D

I remember growing up I used to absolutely love grind session it was always tough as nails but it was just so much fun obviously not as good as Tony Hawk but still an absolute blast I blue blast I would love for them to remaster this game Some day and just make the controls not super janky.
This is my 4th Hawktober and have always been wondering when you'd get around to GS

Awesome to see this one covered! Always thought it was a underrated game, it has its flaws but it also has loads of pros too!
The soundtrack for me was incredible, hearing Dr octagon, GZA, X-ecutioners alongside Black Flag and Nofx was insane!
I was hoping I was remembering this correctly. I liked this game a lot back in the day. Mostly because of the soundtrack.

This game introduced me to Dr.Octagon
A mechanic to get info on the level design on PS1. Wow. Who'd have thought. Can't tell by the scores to beat or moves or whatever besides the crazy objectives. The special level does seem pretty eh which is unfortunate. Also the Wii Sports music during the competition part. XD
The Dark souls joke was great, I am sick of people saying that. Played enough old games to know it's nonsense.
Ah yes Razor Freestyle hmmmm. Then again can't wait till the Dave Mirra games and BMXXX happen.
Fun Fact : Shaba Games made also Spiderman : Web of Shadows (2008) for ps3 and x360, which you should check it out. How about that ?

The final level having locked areas that require getting keys from previous maps seems like a pretty cool concept to me.
Agreed, this seems to have had a lot going for it. If only they'd nailed the thps feel of the controls I'd actively be seeking this game out lol.
Its an awesome game. I bought it back in the day when i finally got thps 1 and 2 to play on my new ps2. Its an amazing game, id give it a 9. Frustrating until you learn the controls.

Is the criteria for Hawktober limited to only trick based Skateboard games?
I'm curious if we could see Street Skater 1 and 2 on this channel
They aren't traditional Skate games but are decent games as is.
This is the game that got me into skating games. It had a demo on the demo disc that came from with my older brother's PS1 and I think it hooked me as soon as I decided to try it. I ended up renting the full game once or twice, and naturally it got me to at some point also check out THPS2 given all the hype and marketing it was getting, and I was in love with the franchise ever since, despite never skating myself.
Also, I know you kinda knocked the soundtrack, but I credit Rise Above by Black Flag being in that game as the moment kid me got on the path to loving punk rock (and of course the subsequent Tony Hawk soundtracks sealed the deal).

this game's sweet, and like thrasher, it absolutely needed a sequel. love the "middle ground" feel it has.

Funny to think this is the game that lead to Shaba becoming essentially the second most prolific Tony Hawk port studio behind Vicarious Visions. From developing a clone to developing the real thing, kinda.

Grind Session, to me, is the only skate game on PS1 who get closer to the feeling of playing THPS!
Unfortunately, Shaba never did a sequence, because Actvision maybe get scared of them and pay them to make THPS games on Ps1 while them are making THPS games to Ps2 hehe
Not gonna lie, that "Skating Nirvana" mansion def looks jank. I mean, THPS2's Skating Heaven was much better than that "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" mansion.

I played Grind Session at E3 in 2000, and the dev who was talking to us swore that the THPS devs stole the control scheme from Grind Session. He seemed really pissed off about it.
Did I believe him? No. And I always thought it was a bit funny just how big a difference there was between the relevance of THPS vs Grind Session.
Actually Thrasher Skate and Destroy DOES have the manual aerial-leveling mechanic! You have to use the bumpers buttons to rotate your character clockwise and ccw. You can even use this mechanic to "pop-out" of grinds/slides or even do barrel rolls and rodeos with enough air

I heard this game was in development in 1999 and was supposed to release before THPS1 but they had to push the release to 2000

That Razor Freestyle Scooter game is actually WAAAYYY better than it has any right to be and I honestly recommend checking it out.
when i was 8 years old i beat this game before i knew it, maybe one evening after buying it from toys r us. i haven't played it in nearly 25 years now, maybe it would be harder for my developed adult brain, but i recall this game being easier than thps. but noow that i think about it im pretty sure i got to a certain point and unlocked everything using cheats, its kind of fuzzy
this was an amazing game, played the shit out of it when i was young, unfortunately my brother lost the memory card with the save

I liked this but damn it turned out to be a grind. I didnt have it in me to pass the the shark pool level. I had thoughts of purchasing the game again but do it but I really doubt I could persist through it. Hooray for the Da Banks. Immortalizing a famous skate spot with their own version of it.

I especially love the joke about calling it: "The Dark Souls of Skateboarding games."!
But what the heck is the deal with the time limit in all these games. Is this something skateboarders do in real life, set a 2 minute timer for each other? I've never seen that. In general I do not like games with time limits because I do not like the pressure. If I wanted that kind of pressure I'd go and work in a restaurant kitchen or something. Just an observation!
Personally I prefer grind session more than thps but that's my opinion I like more sim skateboarding games than arcady

I was on the fence about this as it sounds pretty decent, but in 2022 I don’t know that I’m willing to dedicate myself to the absolute grind of perfectly mastering each level.

When I was a kid I had 2 demo disks. One with Tony Hawk 1 and one with Grind Session.
When I got to Babbages they had both games but Grind Session was 3 dollars cheaper used vs Tony Hawks.
Needless to say I got this game before THPS and honestly I never minded! I love this game. I had this. tony hawk 1 and I had dave mira pro bmx. Those were some fun games.

Damn, this one actually looks pretty cool. While the studio did good work helping with the Tony Hawk games it would have been kind of cool to have seen this turn into a franchise instead. Oh and how did you manage to beat the pigeon boss? I've heard it's as tough as the average dark souls boss.

What are your thoughts on the thps 1+2 remake? I recently got it and honestly if feels a lot like thug 1 or thps4 instead of the originals
They used the more recent control scheme just applied to the first 2 games. If I'm not mistaken I think you can turn the extra trick options like revert & double tap stuff off in the menu, might make it feel more like 1&2 for you. I kinda liked the augmented controls they started adding with 3, all the cool flatland tricks 😄
