Today is forty 0ne years later this game still gets to me, a game of Pure Emotion by a great American Team. What day to remember.
I watched the game on ABC TV that very evening. Watching this still sends chills all over my body. One of the proudest and greatest moments in American sports history.

I came here after i watched movie Miracle (2004) . That was truly exceptional win and fight against mightier enemy . Really inspiring game...
This is up there with Secretariat's 1973 Belmont win as one of the greatest moments in American sports history. Both give me chills to watch.
I remember watching the game. My heart beats just as fast watching it now, as it did back then. Herb Brooks and that team brought unmatchable honor to the US....a miracle...and we believe.

and the Soviet coach pulled the goalie, who was widely considered the best in the world, and replaced him with a backup for the rest of the game. That may have been the moment that allowed the US to win in the end. The coach later said it was the biggest mistake of his life.
@@ChrisJones-gx7fc another mistake that Soviet coach Tekhonov made at the end was that he didn't pull the goalie and put in an extra skater. As Herb Brooks said years later, he thought that Tekhonov didn't know what to do at that point. His team had never been in that position before.
For those who’ve seen the Disney movie version of The Miracle on Ice, if you listen closely to the last eleven seconds of the game, the movie actually switches from the recreation commentary to the original commentary from the real life game. I absolutely loved that the film creators used the real deal instead of recreating it, especially in regards to the “do you believe in miracles?” line. I’m sure it wouldn’t have had the same impact like it did during the real life game.
the film's creators did that because they couldn't ask Al Michaels, who was the original announcer and reprised his part for the film, to recreate his original reaction because it was so emotionally pure that it simply couldn't be recreated.
44 years ago today was the Miracle on Ice.
I watched this documentary on Soviet hockey and one of the players at this game said he never understood why the Soviet coach replaced their goalie (who rarely let anything get by him) last minute. This factor was probably the underdog US team's salvation.
As many wrongfully believe, The USA didn't win gold after this game. After this game they still had to play against my country Finland to ensure the gold medal. Team USA beat Finland 4-2 and won the Olympic gold medal. This game however is one of the biggest achievements ever in all sports. Everyone who follows ice hockey knows what I'm talking about.

No, he decided to change the goalkeeper only because Tretjak played awfully those two US goals. First goal he should've saved and the second one was just stupid playing. He was the best keeper at that time and should've done better.
Back then they didn't have a final match or bronze match. The whole medal round was a round-robin unlike today.
The whole team was psychologically slammed when Tretiak was pulled, as was I.
The USA wouldn't have won this game if he hadn't pulled.
A tie for the Soviets would've been just fine under the round robin system and tiebreakers as goal differential
And contrary to the belief of quite a few people who know this fact, that game was not for the gold medal either. The entire round was round robin like early rounds. Had the USA lost to Finland, the Soviets win gold anyway.
The USA team played games against AHL teams and against the hometown Minnesota North Stars before the start of the games.

If they had lost to Finland by 2+ goals and the USSR/Sweden game ended in a tie, the USA would've finished in 4th place despite every team tallying three points.
Otherwise, the best they could get was a bronze

It was cool watching the Russian players standing watching the celebration thinking ‘Man, this game’s never brought me the joy those guys are feeling right now. Someday I hope I can feel that way about hockey’ and many of them did. They came and fueled the renaissance of the NHL.

The Soviet team had recently beaten a bunch of NHL teams in exhibitions including an NHL All Star team 6-0. The fact the U.S. team was all college kids makes it a ‘miracle’!

Although this wasn't the game that won the Gold Medal in 1980, it made Americans feel better about themselves and that "We" can do anything. At the time of the Iranian Hostage Crisis, gas shortages and a President who had no idea what he was doing, Americans were down. This bunch of "Kids" a huge underdog against the overwhelming favorite to win another olyimpic gold medal. "Not today", "This is YOUR TIME" Coach Herb Brooks convinced these athletes they could beat the Russians. BOY DID THEY!! STILL my favorite sports memory of my lifetime.
Check out the Soviet Union's second Goal. See the Soviet Pass the Puck back to Himself off the U.S. Players SKATE BLADE while His Teammate directly on the Other Side skates by the U.S. Player to Distract His Attention towards Him as the DECOY MAN. That was one of the creative ways the Soviet's would compensate for coverage.
40 years later, I still get the chills. And who are the 16 Russians who gave this thumbs down?

I remember watching it live on a Canadian station because the American station didn't play it till later pre-recorded
As someone born in 1995 it is so weird seeing the goalies stand up the whole game instead of playing butterfly.
Absolutely no doubt that this was the biggest upset in the history of organized sports, amateur or professional. The fact that Team USA could actually outskate Team USSR late in the game was astonishing. NOBODY had ever done that against the Soviet team before. Years later, former Soviet team captain Boris Karlov said that before or since, he had never seen a team with so much speed and stamina as that 1980 US Hockey team.

A group of fresh faced college guys doing what no nation has done, beat the Soviet Union in Olympic hockey!!.
Jim Craig had to stop 39 shots on the goal, 39!! He stopped 36 of them. The Soviets out shot the US 39-16 but we still won, just wow
that's the difference,, soviet goaltending faulted them on that day!

What made this even more important was at that time, The Iranian hostages were being held and the Soviet Union had invaded Afghanistan. The USA needed a pick me up.

I saw this game live too, 13 years old and now 53. Congratulations for the USA team! Was a great match, but very very sorry, i think the Russian Team gave not the best... in this time these players were no profis... no salary...

Where’s Finland they were in second they got silver
The medal round was a complicated round robin format with points awarded for wins and ties and numerous tiebreakers to determine ranking
It wasn't that complicated. Each team took into the medal round the points they had against the other team from their pool. So, USA and Sweden each had 1 point going in since they'd tied in their pool game. USSR had beaten Finland in their pool game so USSR went into medal round with 2 points, Finland with 0. USA beats USSR and Finland to finish with total of 5 points. USSR beat Sweden and lost to USA so they finished with a total of 4. Sweden beat Finland and lost to USSR so they finished with 3 total. Finland lost to Sweden and USA so they finished with 0. Gold USA 5, silver USSR 4, bronze Sweden 3..
Actually I just remembered that Finland and Sweden tied in the medal round so final tally was USA 5 points, USSR 4 points, Sweden 2 and Finland 1. Swedes and Finns tied 3-3 in medal round.
The format of games itself wasn't complicated, but I think you're giving a large swath of society way too much credit for knowing this beforehand (especially in the USA). Kudos for making it concise and well-worded.
What was complicated was if rankings had to be determined if points weren't able to be used. The possibilities were even vast after the first two games of the medal round.

Probably the biggest sports upset of all time. Remember that Russian team beat the Stanley Cup champions and the NHL all star teams handily that year, unless i am mistaken.

Sweden should have not tied USA and Finland and lose to Soviets in the medal round.
It was definitely a miracle, but it wasn't the finals. The US would ultimately beat Sweden in the finals while the USSR received 3rd after winning the bronze game.
Nope.
There was no gold medal game or bronze medal game. This was a round robin medal round. All four top teams played each other and team with most points after those games won the gold. Two teams from both preliminary groups, USA and Sweden from one, and Finland and Soviet Union from other were the teams with their head to head game from preliminary group carried over so teams played only the two teams from other group.
Soviets had beaten Finland earlier and USA tied Sweden, so Soviets had two, Sweden and USA one, and Finland had no points.
USA beat Soviets on first day of medal round, while Finland and Sweden tied. So after two games USA had three points, Soviets and Sweden two, and Finland one. So the final day was USA vs Finland and Soviets vs Sweden. USA beat Finland which put USA to five points and Finland had only one, meaning USA secured the gold and Finland was 4th. So the last round robin game was Sweden vs Soviet Union and winner of that game got silver. Sweden needed to win to get silver and with a tie or Soviets winning, Soviets got the silver.
Before the final day there was a chance all teams would end up with three points and USA could have finished without a medal and anyone could have won the gold.
