    I was 11 years old at the time. It was sucky time for the United States. Just to give a context to it, between 1979 and the 1980 Winter Olympics, the following happened: Three Mile Island nuclear crisis, US Embassy in Tehran is attacked and 52 US diplomats and personnel were taken hostage, American Airlines Flight 191 crashes and around 215 people are killed, Chrysler is forced into bankruptcy and the US government is forced to bail it out, we endured a brutal winter of 1979, there were horrible storms in the Spring of 1979 killing more than 1000 in one single tornado storm alone, the Unabomber Ted Kaczynski mail bombed Northwest University, the Soviets gain influence and power in Nicaragua, NORAD computers go bonkers and US officials received incorrect information of a massive Soviet nuclear strike against the United States, the Ayatollah Khomeini gives false reports to Pakistan claiming the US was causing trouble at the Grand Mosque in Mecca - before the report was proven wrong, the US Embassy in Pakistan is fire bombed killing more US diplomats. Of course, this is also prompted by the Iranian Revolution where the US backed Shah was overthrown and kicked out of the country. This caused a second major energy crisis (the first being in 1973) and oil went from around 15USD per barrel to over 60USD per barrel! The US economy slipped from inflation to flat out stagflation and millions hated Jimmy Carter's ineffectual "leadership." Plus, this was also at the height of the cold war between the Soviet Union and the US. Needless to say, we *needed* this win. It made me feel so freaking proud of my country.

    One of the greatest upsets in Olympic history!

    • @hristo5689
      @hristo5689 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Corwin719
      In the Olympic history - yes
      In sports history - absolutely not, it's not even the biggest upset in hockey (Poland beating the USSR in 1976 World Championship is). The US weren't just "amateurs beating the Soviets", they were a class team and haven't lost a single game, even defeating Czechoslovakia 7-3.

    • @corndorn
      @corndorn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hristo5689 you must not have been alive then. The 76’ ussr team was not in the same league as the one from 80. Makarov and Fetislov are top 3 best Soviet players ever, and they weren’t even around until 78. That same Soviet team beat the best NHL players in a 2-1 series in 79. On the flip side, the US team was almost entirely amateurs, and their win against CZ was a big upset. They weren’t favored to beat sweden either. They played out of their mind and scored victories (or a draw in the case of Sweden) against much better competition. Not only is it the greatest upset in sports history, it’s also the greatest moment. Never have the stakes been higher or the spotlight brighter.

    • @hristo5689
      @hristo5689 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@corndorn are you out of your mind? That team had Kharlamov, Yakushev, Tretiak, Shadrin, Mikhailov, Maltsev, Petrov in their primes. That was one of the absolute best hockey teams of all time. Kharlamov of mid 70s was without a doubt the top 3/2 best Soviet hockey player of all time. They showed what they were capable of when they did whatever they wanted with Canadians in the Summit Series in 1972 (of course until Kharlamov was deliberately injured by one of the biggest hooligans in hockey history) and 1974. They won 7 World Championship titles in the 70s, the most by any team in a single decade ever. Poland defeated the Soviets 6-4 on April 8. The next day they lost 12-0 to Czechoslovakia. That is one of the biggest upsets in sports overall. Of course USA at the 1980 Olympics was a bigger moment but if we’re talking strictly about upsets Poland is the nr 1.
      And again, you can call the Miracle on Ice the best moment in USA or hockey history but it’s for sure not the best one in sports in general.

      We will never know, but I would still have preferred my odds with Tretiak in goal in a tied game with 40 minutes left than his backup. I don't know how good Vladimir Myshkin really was but we know Tretiak was an incredible goaltender. If Tikhonov got in his face a bit and said no more mistakes after the 1st intermission, wouldn't have been surprised if he shut the US out the rest of the way.
