    Wow, that brought back some good memories for me, my grandparents had one just like that. Theirs was a steel blue color with a white vinyl top, it was a gorgeous car, I remember lots of rides in the back seat. My grandma did all the driving because my grandpa was blind, he went blind the same year they brought in 1967. I knew what year the one in your video was because of the steering wheel, that was the only year they had that big round center, in 1968 they changed them to a big bar going across. I remember my grandma starting it, she would put her left arm behind the steering wheel and pull the gearshift up while she started it, she called it the big Ford. Thanks for the memories, I hope you post another video of you guys driving it.

    wow cant wait to see more on this one Jay, worth restoring, love 60s and 70s classics, I have a 72 Lincoln continental, triple black all original , in the family for years, always garaged and never out in rain or snow, I take her out for rides on nice days and to car shows, that 289 is really smooth, no tap , that's great, thanks for posting my friend

    Jay, often people just parked there car they stopped using, in the back forty. Ninety nine percent of the cars I find, were just left where they were out of the way, when they got a new or newer car. Many cars I found, I was able to get running and drive to my garage... but some had no or very little braking, so I often took back roads, and went slow. Now and then I would trailer them or have them towed. It was way more fun to drive them! Some sat for decades... like the 60 Pontiac I did last winter... It sat 4 decades... almost twice as long as you have been on this planet Jay. I like the 66, 67 and 68 Fords a lot. Nice solid car there.
    By the way, the point gap spec you stated, is most likely the dwell angle, not the gap. The point gap should be .017, and that is 26º to 31º dwell. Timing should be 6º BTDC, and last is the firing order 15426378. The plugs should be gapped at .035. The two barrel looks like it's the factory original. With the 289 engine, it most likely has the C-4 trans. The C-6 was used with the larger engine options.

    1}My Galaxie at 90 mph at top of downhill bumpy exit ramp toward busy intersection.
    2} Bias ply tires, 4 wheel non power drum brakes= "brake fade".
    3] Chirping tires, screeching tires, green light! ...Priceless! Miss driving that car. Daily driver and winter beater until I got my first front wheel drive Escort. 1981 Escort wagon was like a jeep in the snow. Plowed through anything. Galaxie got parted out.

    Bought similar car in 67. Drive out price about $2750 with 289, auto, 2 door hardtop. Ford used several transmissions and called them "cruise a matic". Mine had a FX/MX 3 speed with two external band adjustments. Salesmen usually told us we were getting a C6 but they didn't know. Window sticker just read "Cruise a matic" which added about $200 to the deal. Ours was a good reliable car. We kept it 11 years and sold it to a friend. No problems with engine and drive train. Brake job around 50K miles. Water pump shaft bushing failed several times. As I recall about every 2 years needed a reman water pump. Good car.

  • @justsumguy2u
    @justsumguy2u 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    This one is special to me, Jay-----I had a '67 Galaxie 500 Fastback just like that, complete with 289. The transmission isn't a C5, it's a Cruise-O-Matic, which was a holdover from the late 50's. I hope it works ok, because if it doesn't, you have no other choice but to replace it with another Cruise-O-Matic---no other Ford trans will work without modification. I miss mine---it was very clean both inside and out. I'm really looking forward to the next installment.

    • @skippysshop137
      @skippysshop137 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cruise-o-matic transmissions in '67 were either a small case FX or the larger case MX. Since this is not an FE car, it is probably a FX. The FMX did not appear until 1968. Ford combined the best of the FX & MX to create the FMX. They are not hard to rebuild, but the bands must be re-lined, hard parts, steels & frictions can be found. I have a '66 Galaxie 500 Fastback with a 390 4v, and it came from the factory with the FX "green dot" cruise-o-matic. We rebuilt it easier than we thought it would be. Also, the 289 was one of Ford's best engines ever made. The 2 dr Fastbacks are getting very hard to find. that will be a cool project.

    • @justsumguy2u
      @justsumguy2u 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I can tell you that an FMX will not work, because I tried it. The FMX was way shorter than the Cruise-O-Matic, and the transmission mount was located further forward as well. I really wanted that swap to work---the trans in my car was on it's last legs.

    • @skippysshop137
      @skippysshop137 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No a FMX will not fit into a vehicle that had the cast iron case cruie-o-matic. The FMX came out in '68 and was equipped with a shorter tail shaft. The FX and the MX transmission are identified by the dipstick bending into the transmission pan. FMX transmission dipsticks go into the case of the transmission and seal with an o ring. The FX & MX can be built into a decent transmission and keep it original.

    • @Deucealive75
      @Deucealive75 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any C4 would work in this car as long as it had the proper bell housing bolt up. This car probably has the bell bolt to the pump. Some C4's had bolt to the case.

    Great old find, in decent shape for it many years. Two things to look out for, one is always turn the ignition off, because if the points are closed it will burn and pit them, beside the point I had dodge dart that left me stranded and my buddy came out discount store points and condenser, put in the condenser and it ran almost right. SECOND is check the frame to body points, an older friend had a 65 looked pretty good, but as he rounded a corner of the weld popped and sideswiped a parked car. The 60s Galaxies were known in northern ohio as FRAMELESS FORDS. Another point of useless inerest is that Ford plant in our city, and also car makers, dumped their inventory of parts for vehicles out of production for 10 years into our city dump, so my same friend before the frame pop, had a leaking power steering hose. When I asked him about getting the part, he said he already had a couple of them in the basement. This man and being kinda poor got me into curb cruising and sometimes my neighbor and would come back from the dump with more than we took in, got my first tv of my own there, a Philco black and white, and it even had UHF.

  • @RANDOMMekhaniks

    That hose yall thought sucks up fuel is actually the return line, like you said. The steel line is the one that goes to the carbeurator. On my 390, there are two hoses as well. But the return line is smaller in diameter. I noticed yours is big. And based on the looks of the car, I wouldn't be afraid to pour some gas in the tank. My 1964 Mercury sat in an open barn since 1986 and the gas tank was super clean inside. That might get ya going. If you don't want to do that, I suggest using a flashlight to see into the tank to see what its like . And yall dont need a new radiator, just take it to get soldered up, or do it yourself. Two holes like that are fixable. I love seeing content like this, its something I dont see on TH-cam often.

    Had a 67 Ford Ranch Wagon with the 289 in it...that short bypass hose next to the top radiator hose (going into the intake manifold) would blowout about every six months. If you keep this, I would keep one of those on hand. In fifty years of driving and can't remember how many cars I have owned...that one was by far the worst as far as upkeep goes. Good Luck.

    I have been around old fords my whole life. One thing that surprises me on this type of adventure in starting a ford that has been sitting is no mention of lifter bleed down. Hydraulic lifter equipped engines can bleed down. And when you go to restart, you get bent pushrods and no compression. I have a c code 71 stang that had been sitting for about two years and upon startup bent a pushrod. hydraulic lifters bleed down over time. Please before firing up old engines, pull out the distributor and use a drill on the oil drive to stop this from happening. The guys were lucky this time but I was not. Solid lifter engines do not have this problem. Glad to see another piece of history brought back.

    One thing on the brakes of this car that often gets overlooked but causes brake failure is the rubber brake line that runs to the calipers. It's only about 15 or 20 inches long on each tire but when you press the brake pedal the brake fluid will be able to push outward on the line losing pressure due to the rubber breaking down. This car is called a 2 door hardtop by the way. I rebuilt one a 67 but mine had the 390 motor and a C6 transmission, power steering power brakes with ac. Good luck on the rebuild . If I hadn't had the chilton mechanic book on this car everything would have been a nightmare to work on this car.👍👍

    Really nice. The car I grew up with and learned to drive on was a 66 Galaxie LTD. First year of the LTD badging. Later Ford dropped the Galaxie name and kept the LTD name. Ours had a 390 2 bbl, air, Cruise o matic 3 speed, power seats and windows, even a seat belt alarm.

    Nice work getting her going. Check valve is probably stuck on the fuel pump. You could probably free it up but the diaphragm probably won't last.

      The first ever part to go on my classic was the fuel pump. 16 years of not running but 50 miles or less per year, starting only twice or so, will do that. Chances are, the diaphragm was already in bad condition, then I'd guess the ethanol in modern fuel ate it up. ran it home on the float bowl. That's why I like carburetion. If the fuel pump goes, you have, essentially, a tiny fuel tank right in the engine.

    Sounds good when its running

      it just needs a carburetor rebuild kit and a good cleaning to get it to run right

      Greg Everling Maybe a fuel tank in the future too depending on how rusty the inside of it is. It being in the south with great humidity, there’s a high chance the fuel tank will be rusty which can clog the filter and screw up the carb.

    I picked up my 67 exact same patina! $500. My frame is shot. I'm looking for a new one... Started the engine but it's out of time. Hope you get this one back on the road.

    Take the fuel line off from the carburator. Make an fuel can which is placed above carburator. Seal the fuel can and turn it upside down and make a airhole to fuel can somewhere on the side above fuel level. Connect fuel can to carb and start engine. If fuel pump is broken, this is helpful.

    Had a blue one with dark blue vinyl too. Think it had the 390 in it though. Great car.

    I had 4 of them. Trans is a FMX. Move heavy duty than a c-4. Very tough for a "concours" restoration. Parts like faded trunk emblem, and dash pads that have split in the middle will be very hard to find. Rusted rear wheel well trim will be hard too, but great cars. Frame rails rust out from torque boxes and dropping sent many NE cars to the junk yard.

      but the best part is: this Galaxie has lived in the south all of its life; and save for some floor rot, this car is rust free in the crucial areas making an EXCELLENT candidate for restoration!

    These engines were prone to twisting the oil pump shaft off. As the engine got older the rubber valve seals would harden and break up and fall in the pan. The oil pump would suck up a piece and it would lock the oil pump. If the oil light comes on believe it...
