    CORRECTION: Falinks is 100% Greek not Roman. The Phalanx is a Greek formation and they are wearing Spartan helmets. (Embarrassing considering I took a Greek & Rome class, watched "300" and correctly stated a similar fact in a previous video.)

      Want to know how extreme this went? In america's witchhunting days the procedure for restraining a "Witch" was to strip them naked and completely shave all hair off their body, under the fear that a 14 year old girl might be able to sling curses from her pubes or her armpit hair. Feminists suspect that it was secretly just a ruse for the church to be able to strip girls naked without getting called out for it.

    • @JacobPDeIiNoNi
      @JacobPDeIiNoNi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Although frogs are the intentional and primary design element, I think another more obscure origin is the dicynodonts. They are ancient creatures which look somewhat similar to the bulbasaur line, and some also have names ending in “Saurus”. They certainly take a lot of inspiration from frogs/toads though.

    6:47 I think the phalanx idea of Falinks seems to be a misunderstanding brought about by the English translation name being, not wrong, but overly specific.
    It bugged me that Falinks (my favorite Gen 8 Pokemon) is actually a poor interpretation of a phalanx, given it doesn't cover its front, its biggest weakness, at all. A phalanx is supposed to have its members next to each other with overlapping defense, not behind each other. Note that it doesn't even get Wide Guard (yet).
    Consider its Pokedex entries. One of them puts emphasis on the part about one of them being a higher rank, while the other states that they can assume a variety of formations (not that they do in the games...) Several of the other name translations that don't copy the English name also reference formations, generally.
    But someone pointed out its Japanese name ("tairetsu", meaning both 'rank' and 'formation'). So it's actually a reference to "Rank and file", both the higher ranking lead member at the front, and the single file formation (that it almost exclusively walks and battles in) forming behind it.
    Of course, you can't exactly call it "Rankin", since that name has other animation uses. "Fylin" (file-in), maybe?

      Ikr I also wish it gets a Galarian Form or/& Galarian Evolution or/& Gigantamax Form for either that Evo or just Jynx (but I’d prefer an Evolution) I think it could really help out Jynx a lot and make people to actually LIKE it

    • @BetonCin
      @BetonCin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Its based on a fashion style in the early 90s I think. The Ganguro. Many japanese women would wear black make-up with thicc pink lipstick. Jynx is like a parody of this style

    • @RuneScapeShadoma
      @RuneScapeShadoma 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's based on the Ganguro fashion trend of 90's Japan and the Yama-Uba, a youkai that takes the form of a dark-skinned hag that dwells on snowy mountain tops.

    Another fun thing for Dragapult. The diplocaulus, which it is based on, has a nearly complete fossil with the exception of some portions of its tail. That might be the reason that the end of Dragapult's tail is ghostly and invisible.

    I thought that Hydrogen was a Hydra from Greek mythology

    • @Victor-mk5pp
      @Victor-mk5pp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah me too. That would also make sense looking at the name. Hydreigon = Hydra + drei + dragon.
      (Drei is German for three, just like ein is one and zwei is two (see Deino and Zweilous))

    • @thealientree3821
      @thealientree3821 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually speaking, Hydreigon feels like it’s more based on the Hydra, especially as there is a story involving a 9-headed one. The Yamaha no Orochi is 1 head off, while the Hydra has the exact amount of heads. The three heads may also refer to how people portray the Hydra with only 3 heads instead of 9.

    something else about cursola: it's fitting to have a pokemon based off coral bleaching in a region based off the country that started the industrial revolution: Brittan, which resulted in the heavy reliance in fossil fuels. This dependence on fossil fuels in Brittan is shown everywhere in Galar from the two mines, Motostoke and a literal coal pokemon.
