    Should add that Underdog is specifically showing the aftermath of Lucky Punch. Really has the energy of a bullying victim fighting back and the bully crying to the teacher.

      I thought it was the aftermath of Setuppercut, where Mega Hamster also pwns Behemoth. And apparently the art of Lucky Punch is a parody of Cross Counter, where Des Kangaroo is ALSO beating up on Behemoth.

      I don't get the relation between Lucky Punch's artwork and it's effect. The artwork shows Rescue Rabbit reflecting an attack. The effect is possibly letting you draw 3 cards if you get lucky with some coin tosses when your opponent attacks. There is nothing about stopping or redirecting an attack.

    I don't want to be "that guy" but Behemoth has been abused by small beast monsters in many, many cards over the years. Underdog is just Behemoth begging Alpha for help, cause he's the master of beasts. Nimble Mega Hamster and Rescue Rabbit are two of the many abusers and Behemoth is snitching on them. At least that's how I interpret the card, cause Behemoth is huge but man... in some cards they've continued punching him when he's down.

    Team Taiyou are notable in that they were the first people in-universe to summon Zushin The Sleeping Giant. Even in-universe, Zushin was acknowledged as a card that everybody and their grandma had, but *nobody* used because it was nearly impossible to summon. Since Team Taiyou couldn't get any good cards, their deck was as basic a stall deck could be. Just setting weak Normal monsters in defense and using cheap cards to protect the very first monster they set, which would be used to summon Zushin. The only other effect monster in the deck was one that buffed the defense of monsters on the field.

    Old Fusions, yes, very odd beasts.
    A lot of the earliest card arts and backgrounds stand out for their bizarre and magical, almost tacky by today's standards aesthetic. Lots of guys with just spikes on them and 1700 what have you on a vanilla level 5. In addition to PaniK statlines, would love to see a modern revisit/parody theme that strives for this artstyle because I feel it is missed.

  • @jasperjavillo686
    @jasperjavillo686 ปีที่แล้ว +62

    I think the most interesting card art has to be the version of Number 39: Utopia that depicts it sealed form.
    For those of you who don’t know, in the anime, when a Number is Xyz Summoned, they usually appear on the field in a sealed form before unfolding to reveal the actual monster. When a Number is used as Xyz Material for a Rank-Up, the Number returns to its sealed form before entering the Overlay Network again. This makes the card art for Utopia rather cheeky as in modern play, Utopia is only summoned to Rank-Up into its stronger forms, so the monster never stays on the field for long and would actually spend more time in its sealed form.

    • @madjester9844

    • @jasperjavillo686

      @@madjester9844 I don’t think that was physically possible. Take Utopia for example. In its sealed form, its torso is a white sphere with a blue orb nestled in a crater, and when it transforms such that the crater closes tightly around the sphere to form the gemed chest plate. And where are Utopia’s legs? During the duel with Dr Faker, we see Utopia Ray with transformation sequence that uses different camera angles, and its legs just pop out of nowhere.

He looks very similar to it, its evolutions have a more digimon-esque aspect (not to mention having four evolution stages is the norm in digimon), and having his heart tainted by evil is a big part of agumon's character arc (and several other similar digimon like guilmon too) . 12:42 Nothing special except the fact they where the first ones to summon Zushin the sleeping giant, according with the anime. For that they need use level 1 normal monsters for the Zushin summoning condition. The trap card reflect the fact that the team main focus before summoning Zushin it's to put they normal monster in defense position and use a bunch of card to power up they defenses and prevent they destruction (though battle and effects) so they can put enough Zushin counter on one of then and summon the monster.

    A lot of the mega-expensive vanilla monsters are expensive because they were only ever available in tournament packs. Beautiful Headhuntress has a single printing as a rare from Tournament Pack 2 from 2002. Likewise, Metal Dragon has only ever been printed in LOB, and a lot of those first editions are INCREDIBLY valuable. Ready Fusion has also made a lot of very specific vanilla fusions valuable because they fit a perfect niche of level+attribute+type to fit into a deck, like Kaminari Attack (a $6 common from MRD) being the only instant fusion target for Thunder Dragons or Kwagar Hercules (a *$400* super rare from Tournament Pack 1 from 2002, though it dropped to $150 when it got a reprint) for Bee Troopers as the only insect fusion monster for extending your plays.
    Also, most card errata happen because Konami did a terrible job of writing effect text before 2011 (when PSCT established text norms). Manga Ryu-Ran got a bunch of reprints and every time, all of the Toon monsters had their texts streamlined (well...kinda...). Toons are like Necrovalley in that they kept getting clarification errata, though Necrovalley's errata have often included some minor functionality changes (like whether or not a summoning procedure like Grapha or summoning effect like Trickclown actually work while Necrovalley is live).

    I don't think Manga Ryu-Ran's name is a mistranslation on the part of the manga. The Viz translation of the manga was generally much closer than the 4kids dub, and it had some early chapters with different names to what the anime went with. Also, the English manga release of that chapter came out well _after_ the release of the card, as far as I can tell - the collected release of that chapter came out in 2005, a full three years after its release as a physical card.
    The more likely reason is just that the translators of the card game wanted to make the naming of Toons less repetitive, and didn't anticipate that them all having "Toon" in the name would be important later on.

  • @zeusalternative1270

    Gigobyte looks to be a reference potentially to Augomon from Digimon, at t-rex with similar proportions. Also Gigobyte, Giga Byte. Giga Byte being a type of amount of Digital storage. Also the "evolutions" makes more sense for Digimon since Pokemon caps of at three stages evolution. 12:45 So my memory of 5Ds might be a bit foggy at this point, but if I recall correctly Team Tayou won through a kind of "Stall-Burn" Strategy that had them focusing on building an "indestructible" board by playing Hand-Holding Genie, which gains DEF equal to the DEF of all other monsters on your field, and only allows your opponent to target it for attacks, while burning their opponent with Speed Counters (a mechanic of 5Ds where you basically got "Speed Counters" during each of your turns during your Duel which you could trade in for useful effects like a Draw, or in their case inflicting 400 Damage to their opponent for each "Speed Spell" in their hand, without removing the Speed Counters if I remember correctly).
    Scrumforce was used since the Boss-Monster of Jack Atlas, a friend of Protagonist Yusei Fudo had an effect that would destroy all Defense Position Monsters after it battled, which would have nuked the entire field of Team Tayou.
    In the End Team Tayou's Board got destroyed, however they also had another up to this point unknown Strategy, Zushin the Sleeping Giant, which worked well with their low-Level Normal Monster Strategy. But of course in the End Yusei destroyed Zushin too, because that's what Protagonists do.

      I see i'm not alone. That's how i started collecting the actual cards when i was a kid. I always wanted see a show that just focused on the cards lore.
      i think the closest thing i had to this was Chaotic

    Gagagigo is probably my all-time favorite Yu-Gi-Oh monster and it's all thanks to the first tag Force game. 1850 4 star beat-stick with one and two tribute "evolutions"? Absolutely perfect stuff for when you're just grinding for a couple of hours on some weak duelists. Between it's cool design and the edgy multi-card story, what's not to love?

    I believe Team Taiyo used a lot of the ruling for Speed Duels to their advantage while working their way up during the tournament. A lot of burn damage with Speed World 2 as well as having a decent defense strategy. Honestly, the only reason they lost against Yusei's team was due to them getting rid of Dragon Capture Jar which would have prevent most of the 5Ds team's powerful cards due to their aces being dragons.

    manga ryu ran could go with early yugioh's tendency to have english names in japanese and japanese names in english. for example, "toon dragon egger" is japanenglish, and the card is actually read that way, where as ours is "manga ryu ran". idk what ran means but manga is comic and ryuu is dragon.
    lots of old vanillas did this, like kaminarikozou(thunder kid), tatsunootoshigo(sea horse), or hitotsu-me giant(cyclopse). all of these pairings directly translate into each other. just an interesting old naming oddity that found its way onto an archetype

    • @matthewkuscienko4616
      @matthewkuscienko4616 ปีที่แล้ว

      A few things people are missing here: firstly, Ryu Ran was shown in the manga first (as with many older cards), they just chose to depict it in an egg for the card artwork even though what it looked like underneath was always known. Secondly, it may not have "toon" in it's name like most toon monsters, but a manga is a Japanese comic strip, which is were that comes from

    Errata isnt a new effect (or more commonly nerfed new card with same name), errata is a grammatical text/error fix (rooted in error/erratum).
    Most card text changes are indeed errats. Some (like e.g. tribute to the damned nerfed from non-target to target with first problem solving text/near keywording, instead of "full text keywording" of Zexal on) in turn were outright just new nerfed card stealing the same name.

    Honestly with both Magic and Yugioh the art is the reason I mostly just play casually and don't try to buy the really expensive cards. Sometimes a weaker card has better art so I prefer that card.
    It's because of reasons like this that I want a copy of Beautiful Headhuntress and Warrior of Tradition. Good luck buying them though at that price. Not worth it.
    I gotta say I've really been enjoying these recent type of videos.
