Back in the late 70s, I had developed bunions on each foot after wearing pointy shoes to work. I saw an orthopedic guy, and he gave me a “prescription” to take to a shoe repair person, in order to install a metatarsal bar across the sole (on the bottom) of my favorite shoes. It was magic. That bar spreads those joints where the toes meet the foot across the whole foot and immediately straightens the toes. The bar just needs to follow that line of joints, is about 1.5-2 inches wide and only about 1/8th of an inch thick. It cured mine very quickly and my feet felt so good wearing the shoes. Now I only wear Birkenstocks and have never had recurring problems. Hope that helps someone!!

Lots of great advice for bunions. Thanks for taking the time to be so comprehensive. Physiotherapists are so much more attentive. A tremendous amount more helpful information than my podiatrist offered. They just have the 10 minutes to look at your foot and provided the standard, protocol approved response that requires the least amount of dismissive effort.

I've had 3 bunion surgeries, the 1st when I was 29 and it came back! I had the 2nd in 2019 on the same foot before the pandemic along with a torn tibial tendon transfer and hind foot reconstruction in 2 surgeries 8 weeks apart. I had my other bunion on the other foot 13 months ago. The reason I had bunions so young is rheumatoid arthritis and hypermobile joints. I happen to live on private wooded acreage with steep long roads and I love walking here although my walk is considered a hike to most. My feet are much better since my surgeries and it wasn't much fun but I'm doing great now! Thanks for the videos and keep them coming!

I was born a club foot, left worse than the right. I went through the casts and braces as a baby, but babies grow up. Everyone thinks my feet are "fixed". They actually are just re-arranged. I wish I would have had these exercises 45 years ago. I did them as you explained them and could feel the pull. It was a good pull. I won't over do. I am going to try to strengthen my feet. Love this video! I originally thought the deformed bone was the result of heels, but I realized I only wore wide toed heels, not pointy ones (didn't like the style and my feet were too wide for a pleasing look lol!). A few years ago I began to have issues with my back and started seeing a chiropractor who informed that the left side of my body was weak and while watching your video realized that is the side where the bone protrudes on my foot. He also told me to include the same exercise you suggested (The Clam) to help strengthen my hip. Also, I noticed that my leg does swing inward more.. I never imagined the issues with my hip and weaknesses could cause this issue. I just considered having surgery to correct this issue but now will no longer entertain this option. I am definitely adding your band exercise daily. I have already removed heels (began falling). Thanks again for your generosity!!! Blessings.

A silicone toe separator is great 👍, and I wear it at home or inside my trainers 👟 (with a wide toe box) outdoors 24/7, depending on the season.
After my hip replacement operations 13 and 10 years ago, I have always had a rather thick cushion/pillow between my knees/legs when sleeping on either side.

With shoes I also think it's so important to have them stay wide out at the toes. Those Nikes are wide across the ball alright, but then taper in on the toes. In movements when the foot is pressed against the inside edge or into the toe, there will be those outward-bending forces on the big toe that you don't want.
I really appreciated the clear explanation & visual location of those particular foot muscles to address.

Great video. I had several issues after hip Ewings in the 80s and dxr, so i think, along with both parents, either having a bunion or hammer toes, which they kindly passed onto me. This contributed to my gate and ankles rolling inwards, and in recent years, many falls. The last one was going over on my ankle while running for a bus and causing a severe tear in my hamstring. Unable to sit long now receiving physio. 😢 Thankfully, with guys like yourself, I can check these exercises to prevent ongoing discomfort..x

Hello Will, I followed your advice to massage where it gave me pain with some medicated oil. And wore toes spacer all day, including at nights. Amazingly, the throbbing pain went away in a few days!!!
I had bunion surgery on the left foot. Don’t want to go thru surgery again. Took forever to heal my left foot.
Thanks so much for healing video 👍

    Thanks again, so kind ❤❤❤

Thank you for the great advice it’s not too complicated and simple. I had knee surgery. I’ve had a lot of these complications and I’m so glad that I can try something that will prevent me from having another bunion surgery or help me recover from my knee and ankle issues.

The most important thing I did was to start wearing flat shoes with a large toe box. then I started to walk barefoot a bit every day. I then bought Yoga Toes and wore them for a bit every night. It took months but my bunions are now gone.

@arjunchoulwar5905 all that I mentioned and I forgot to add I wore some Merrill Sandals all summer and they had a big toe strap that I feel may have helped. I think stopping wear skinny shoes was key. Good luck!

I'll try these exercises, especially the last two make a lot of sense. Thank you. I have a bunion on one foot. Not severe, doesn't hurt, but it bothers me because I've known it means something's wrong, but didn't know exactly what or what to do about it. Tried 2 different types of toe spacers and they did nothing. Makes much more sense to address the actual problems that's caused it, which surgery wouldn't do anyway. In my case I believe the original cause was habitually pressing down on the accelerator pedal with my big toe whenever I drive. Stopped doing that, but that's not enough to reverse the problem. I'm hopeful these exercises will. Excellent video. I've subscribed.

Thank you! You have helped me so much with your videos! ?????Question… My little toe on each foot has recently pulled in and us even crossing over the toe beside it. And while I can curl my toes fine, when I spread them apart the little toes will not move at all!! There is no pain. I’m 64 years old and have always had good movement in all my toes before! Can you tell me what this could be? Thanks.

My experience with shoes that have a wide toe box is this: they are wide at the metatarsal-phalangeal part of the foot but then they taper too much at the toes. A normal foot is triangular in shape. The apex of the triangle is at the heel and the base of the triangle is at the toes. NOT like the shoe he held up. The rest of the content works for me.

    • @heidikamrath1951

Yes, the shoe he held up made me flinch. Looked painful. I’ve been wearing “barefoot shoes” for ~12 years and don’t think I could ever go back to conventional shoes.

Wonderful to know. I've only watched 2 of your videos and they have been extremely helpful
My thoracic spine and shoulder blade muscles are weak Your exercises are making them stronger. I've been worried about a hunchback. As far as bunions go. I had surgery at the end of 22 and ended up in the hospital 2x for tisue and bone infections
My toe is now starting to go under the toe next to it which is causing hammer toe. The bunion is returning also. Thank you for showing me muscles that can hopefuly straighten my big toe enough. At this point, it hurts to wear closed-toe shoes. I appreciate you
