Totally agree with this video. I do reverse lunges because forward lunges are too stressful on the knees.

@@debbiec6216watch Will’s video. He demonstrates reverse lunges in this video; as the preferred substitute for regular lunges where the leg comes forward and puts the stress on the knee. The leg goes backward and you are working the front leg.

You wouldn't believe the resistance I've had from personal trainers and athletic trainers (U.S.) when I ask to exclude the leg extension machine from all workouts. Even as a healthy high school athlete with strong thighs I could hear the underside of my right patella crackle when doing the leg extension machine. I had very good form. My coaches just dismissed it as normal. I've now had multiple PTs advise against it. I include this entry just to warn some people they may run into those who disagree with taking out the leg extension machine. Trainers may try to talk you into using it. Hold firm. Your body. Your money. Find someone else if you need to. I haven't missed the machine at all.

Find a trainer that doesn’t rely on machines. The only machines my personal trainer uses at his gym are treadmills, bicycles, and elliptical machines.

100% agree with this video. Also I think that some of the problem is people are not doing the exercises properly.I don’t think it’s a good idea to lock out fully on any exercise as it will over time damage your joints

I'm in my late 30's, and I recently started going to the gym to get fit and lose weight. I could not figure out why I was feeling knee pain going up and down stairs following leg day at the gym. Thanks to your video, I now know the problem is the leg extension machine. I'm female, 4'11", so my short size probably added to the problem. I already quit doing squats and forward lunges a while ago, because those exercises caused really bad knee pain for me in the days following the exercises. Otherwise, I have zero knee pain. Running, walking, etc,., no problem. Just squats, forward lunges, and, as I know now, gym machines have been causing knee pain. So, going forward, I will skip all the leg machines at the gym just to be safe. For leg day, I'll use loop bands instead. So glad I found your video, because it no doubt prevented future knee problems for me. I don't think this video isn't just for the 50+ plus crowd, it's for anyone who regularly works out and has been experiencing knee pain.

    CONFIRMED!
I got a Tibialis bar a month ago and my knees were KILLING me. Contrary, to what I'd been told, the Tib Bar did NOT make the pain subside. I had to stop using the Tib bar.
You've just explained why - - caused patella and torn meniscus injury to worsen.
    I appreciate the verification.

I presented to my physio in March 2023 with what I thought was medial.meniscus pain in my right knee. He suggested it was likely fraying caused by osteoarthritis. He gave me some exercises that included leg extensions (what you young people call knee extensions). He suggested if I do the exercises and reduce my running load a little it should resolve within a few weeks or months. By June it was still bothering me (I was visiting the physio every few weeks), so I saw a sports doctor who ordered an MRI scan. This apparently showed some arthritis, some fraying or degeneration of the medial meniscus, an older partial tear of the ACL and some inflammation of the MCL. He advised me to continue to do the exercises from the physio. The knee pain, while fairly mild at first, slowly progressed to the point where the sports doctor recommended PRP injections at the end of the XC season, in late September (I actually won my club championship, so it wasn't very sore, until August). The PRP injections seemed to work initially, but once I returned to training, the pain returned. Then in November it became more severe. At that point I spoke to the physio and the senior sports doctor about it, but they both suggested another MRI scan would show nothing different, so just continue with the exercises. By Mid-December, I had to stop all running and even walking on the treadmill in the gym to warm up and cool down for my leg sessions was impossible. But still the advice was the same. Eventually I saw a different physio, my preferred one, but he is just so difficult to get into see, and he advised me to get a referral to see a local Orthopedic Surgeon, who ordered several xrays and another MRI. He has confirmed several things, first I do not have arthritis, second the original MRI showed deterioration in the meniscus and third there is a complex tear that wasn't in the original scan. I have a horizontal tear through the posterior horn and a partial radial tear through the body. He suggested arthroscopic surgery to clean it out. What really stands out for me is that the leg/knee extensions always made it sore, and may even have made the tears worse. I haven done any leg workouts for 2 or 3 weeks, because the meniscus pain is so bad after them. I haven't been able to decend stairs for 5 or 6 weeks, although this has finally changed this week, after ceasing the leg extensions several weeks ago. I'm likely to get the cleanout, but it hasn't been arranged yet. Thanks for the video.

Again great tips. I noticed myself after doing certain exercises that my knees were sore afterwards and those were the exactly ones 😉 I will do the alternate ones Will suggests. Thanks 🙏

I recently started a bands workout and the trainer has us doing lunges. My knees really don’t like it (was told I will def need both knees replaced). Thanks for the alternatives!

Thank you for this video. I did forward lunges sometime back & I am suffering from knee pain now. In future, when I get better, I'll try reverse lunges, as suggested by you. Hopefully, it won't give me knee pain.

Hi i find this a very helpful video and well explained too. Doc says i have a small piece of cartilage which broke loose and is causing inflammation and also knee pain. But i am an avid gym enthusiast so now i can change my regime and avoid further knee damage.
