I love the tater trips at the end to see what she is doing to keep up with Matt for summer break. Matt that looked Like great country. Jerome and wife thank you for your hospitality to our Matt. Hike on to San Francisco.
Now this brings back some memories. When I lived in Vegas I climbed in Red Rocks 3 or 4 days a week for about 2 years. I've been in the valley Jen is in a number of times. Plus every other pull-out in the park. It's hard to believe that was 22 years ago. Man, I miss the desert.
Yep there are always a few that spoil it for the rest of us. Along the AT in the town of Palmerton one of the oldest hostels know as the Jail house in the basement of the police station closed due to the abuse of a few that may not have been thru hikers. Happy trails Matt and a shout out to Jen for the awesome views. 😎☮
The country you're walking through is beautiful. Thanks for the balanced view of the support people provide along the trail. I used to tell my receptionist that about one hundred people would come in per day and ninety-nine of them would be great, it's that one you have to watch out for. Thanks also for the Tater update. Good luck!
Dolly Sods is one of several places in West Virginia where the climate (and therefore the flora) is like Canada. When the glaciers retreated northward after the last ice age, the plants retreated up so you find red cedar, bunchberry, and reindeer lichen - plants that are not found in the area around it. I'm sure you have heard that the weather is unpredictable, likely to be wet and cold.
Thanks! It’s the only one I’ve found I really like. I lost the one I found on trail years ago (I think o lost it in a hotel bed somewhere) and recently bought a few more when I couldn’t find mine again. I do wish I had managed to grab one of those PCT ones from Mama Bear but alas, covid year
Great video and GREAT day (finished up with a GREAT trail Angel!) As for the "Trail Adjacent" individuals one runs into (excellent term by the way, I shall use it more often in conversation!), anyone who has hiked on the long trails runs into these folks from time to time. Sort of trail beggars. Generally you can tell the difference between the beggars and those who, in true trail fashion, just need a little help as part of their hike. Love to help the second type; dislike the first. The truly crazy are more seldom in evidence, but they are a danger when you run into them. Your radar has always been good on this and your "just pack up and move on" prescription is the right thing to do. Cheers, and Hike on! Tortoise
Loved the Taters update! Could those go before the credits? I always automatically stop at the ending slide. Only kept watching cuz I saw it in the comments. And yes I know it’s in the title so I should know it’s coming… but the chances are high I’ll forget
Similarly, my sister-in-law started a non-profit for victims of domestic violece and occasionally has someone that tries to take advantage of the system. These type of people are everywhere, unfortunately. I, nor am I sure Brian, views you this way when/if you need an extra few days. Haha., I wouldn't be surprised if it goes down into the 20s in the Sods. It is crazy in WV how many abandoened houses there are left to rot, even in towns. Capturing those turkeys, awesome! So many locals are against those windmills. The area Taters was exploring is absolutely stunning, For some reason, I really love this video.
I always appreciate positive comments. Sometimes especially when it’s just another day on roads I end up struggling with some doubt as to whether it’s even worth putting out. It got into mid to high 20s on me one night
Yay, another vid! I noticed a couple of oddly meandering, not-very-direct bits in the route coming up. Are you as committed to the red line on this journey as you were on the CDT?
There was a section near blackwater falls that seemed like it was meandering quite a bit and that ended up being one of the best sections so far. So we’ll see. There isn’t really as strict a redline on something like this anyway. I tend to want to walk through the big cities vs going around like the DC section
When you talked about people taking advantage of the trail without actually hiking, I had to think about old stories from the Camino de Santiago. There is an old Viennese dialect word - "Pülcher", which comes from the word pilgrim. It means little crooks who used to hang around the Camino pretending to be pilgrims, and who not only took advantage of the pilgrim infrastructure, but also stole from other pilgrims. These stories are hundreds of years old. I guess people remain people
I’m listening to all of these videos of you basically crossing Maryland because I live there, I have a question though..: Is Tater, Jen, & Blondie all the same person? I’m blind, so it was a little bit difficult for me to understand how many people you were walking with. Also, for some reason the videos jump around from say episode 4 to episode 9, then back to episode 6 to episode 13. It's probably just my phone getting it messed up. Anyway, I haven’t finished watching the entire journey across the US yet, but It's pretty exciting for me to take the journey with you in my head.
There is a playlist on the channel you can use to watch everything in order. Relying on TH-cam up next to feed you the next episode usually works but not always. Jen’s trail name is Tasty Taters. I’ve called her Blondie since the early days when she started climbing with me and I’m just bad about staying consistent while filming. Since we’re filming all the time. So all the same persob
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Okay cool, thanks. I really enjoy listening to your videos. I actually used to live right off of the C&O towpath, so I knew right where you were. Have fun & be safe. And by the way, Jen sounds like a super fun chick to walk with, and her laughing makes it much easier to want to be around than someone who’s always complaining or being negative.
donate to the trail angels I know some youtubers who seldom tip, sometimes they do. I guess it depends on how rich you are, personally i would rather have enough money to buy my own accomodations and food and share with someone else. I wouldnt do any hike thurs unless I could do this.
While hiking the AT she used two of them in one load and I ended up with some pretty bad chemical burns agree we got back on trail. She’s been afraid of them ever since
Sent Pastor Epling a quick note thanking him, the former Pastor and his congregation for providing you a safe and comfortable place to spend a night.
So have we! Can't beat West Virginia kindness.
"Main character syndrome" a perfect description
Big thank you for sharing your adventure. Absolutely love the post credit scenes with Jen!
It only took a moderate amount of harassment to get that out of her :)
I love the tater trips at the end to see what she is doing to keep up with Matt for summer break. Matt that looked Like great country. Jerome and wife thank you for your hospitality to our Matt. Hike on to San Francisco.
Another great vid. such a beautiful country we have.

Love your journey and perspective , nice bonus with Jen at the end.

We would say the same about participants when leading trips for Sierra Club. But that one percent was often a doozy
It's good to hear from you 😊 This is definitely one of your best videos! I loved it! Thank you for sharing 👍 Stay safe and comfortable 🙏❤

Thanks, at least you still have a smile safe journeys. ✌🏻👊🏼
I am so glad the trail angels are there for you this trip.Take care,go easy ( but we know you won't)
great video. love the fact you are still rocking the AT buff.

Hey Matt, that's some nice country you were walking. Glad no attacks by dogs or turkeys. Hey Taters!
At 10:39 those are guinea fowl! Beautiful country there.
Day 19 of watching. Long day of fly fishing. Time to relax and watch the beautiful countryside roll on by. Thank you Bishop!
Always look forward to the 4/20 episodes each year
Thanks, go taters go nice to see you again. ✌🏻👊🏼
So glad my home state was treating you well. Hike on ! I’m sure Jen missed you on her hike! Stay well😊
'Main Character Syndrome' - I like it. I'm stealing it.
I like your 'main character syndrome ', and know exactly the type of person you mean. I'm going to steal that phrase and use it shamelessly.
I hope you had a restful night at our house. Sorry I missed you.
It was amazing. Hard to leave the next morning actually. That’s a really interesting layout
Yay!! New episode😎

it's not just Main Character Syndrome anymore.. i'm pretty sure it's reached Main Character Pandemic levels at this point

Hah, that’s an awesome little factoid. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

@@blindsurvival8570 thanks! she is almost always a real joy to be around
For every downhill of hiking there are two longer up hills
The Amish have all those categories as well.

I start my day with 300 and then keep adding
Why doesn’t she like Tide pods? I use them to save on buying plastic bottles.
While hiking the AT she used two of them in one load and I ended up with some pretty bad chemical burns agree we got back on trail. She’s been afraid of them ever since
You were feeling nauseated, perhaps because you ate or drink something nauseous.
