Going from east to west across the Sods is not that far. There are numerous trails within the wilderness, though. A popular hike that basically circles around it is maybe around 25 miles.
Great day hiking through a really scenic wilderness. A unique high altitude mountain bog with some special plant life. Sorry you couldn't stay there. I've been on a loop hike through almost all of Dolly Sods and stayed in two great sites (and one so-so one!) that made all the hike worthwhile. And typical, when you're cold you want it to warm up a bit but when you're hot you want it to cool down! Even with layering it is really hard to hit that sweet spot. Hike on (with lots of beans and rice and coffee)! Tortoise
Canaan loop rd is free camping and just a wonderful road to the north just a tad. I've run all those areas you showed. Truly my piece of heaven in this state.
Matt so glad you finally got to hike on a trail and yes very much resembled the AT. When you kept mentioning Dolly Sods I instantly thought, oh he has a girlfriend named, Dolly Sods😂. I know, Taters is your girlfriend so and I knew you would and are faithful etc. Then I finally saw the sign for Dolly Sods which made laugh….its a place and an area along your travels. Oops! 😂It’s been fun following you. Forever onward young man!⛰️🥾👍
Great video. Enjoyed watching the gradual transition from paved roads to back into the woods. Also your discussion about food choices at this point in your hike was very insightful. Do you estimate your daily caloric needs and daily weight of your food? If so what would they be? -Geo
No, I just eyeball it and adjust as I go through phases. Weight is what it is. If I have to do a 5-7 day carry I’ll lean heavier on lighter items but I couldn’t tell you what my food bag weighs
Real nice one : some beautiful trail , wilderness feel and ...no more big problems .A little chilly but you like it more than a little too warm. You always had a bit of nausea in the morning , try having dinner before you get in the tent . Around 6 pm , when you're adding the cheese to it.Had somewhat the same problem : eating too late before laying in the sleeping bag . One of the (many) reasons i like cold soaking : can cook and eat while hiking. Also i'm sure you are past Parsons already : no more (real) trail until after Clarksburg ,mostly roads or something called "Country Routes" ??
Getting artsy with those "underwater fruit~~ is that you ?~~~"shot that will begin the series of flashbacks...bringing us to the old South...your outfit blends in to the woods, still carrying coffee in your Rucksack.Whoops Nice hike, sometimes a place looks like a world stood still,a world in waiting, peaceful yet it's seen it's share of ...in a civil war way. Amazing pace up,over and thru.Sleep well, we are in awe.Thankyou for the inspiration 🧭 Superb editing, you really keep it flowing.
Well, the Dolly Sods was pretty and a nice change from the road walks but it didn't seem to be as long, tough, or wet as I expected it to be. You had mentioned it several times since you started as a major thing on your journey and I was expecting more. Pretty small Wilderness Area by western US standards. I hope there are more similar places on the ADT but I am not expecting that much until you hit the Rockies. I'd like to be surprised.
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes It may be that those folk don't have the experience of hiking, say, the Bob or other Rocky Mountain or Sierrra or Cascades Wilderness areas. So, without that comparison the Dolly Sods may seem more impressive and formidable.
I once had somebody blow up majorly on me on Facebook because somebody was asking about Sedona and I said it was overly commercialized and that I preferred a more remote area. I absolutely have my biases due to past experiences. For example: Whitney sucks and is one of the lamer Sierra peaks… :p
Yep, very concerned about it. Hence moving as quickly as I’m able. If I get blocked by snow in the Sierra I have a plan b for next year after the Yukon
Unfortunately I don't think the red line goes through the best parts of Dolly Sods. There are expansive views for most of the hike on the opposite side of the wilderness. You were on the side with the road and trees from the looks of the video.
11:41 Dolly Sods is not exactly what I think of when I think of "wilderness area" here in the West. Aren't wilderness areas supposed to be motor vehicle free? I guess wilderness area in the East means gravel roads instead of pavement.
ok, you went through Dolly Sods way faster than i was thinking. i thought it would be a two day thing, at least. that surprised me.

I really love how you captured this area. Godspeed in your continued travels.
The weekends get busy...in warmer weather, it now get insane with people travelling from all around the DC and Baltimore area converge on the Sods.
Dolly is a great place for a walk
👏 beautiful
Thanks, keep up your mileage safe journeys. ✌🏻👊🏼
the coffee is the best part
Absolutely gorgeous country❤ Thank you
Hey Matt, that was a good day, sleep warm!

Yay a real trail!
From the video, that seemed like a very long day. I'm glad things are going well, good luck!
I'm thinking those "jellyfish" were frog eggs.
Yes. Tadpoles!

Day 20. Lazy lounge day. Time to hit the beach. Really dig the West Virginia countryside. Seems nice and quiet.
😎☮

Same. People had been talking it up for a while

So green
Haha, when Taters was in the area, the trees were still basically bare.
Your “jellyfish?” Looks like an amphibian egg mass.
Are you not at all concerned with moving fast enough to beat the snow out west? Don't you worry about weather preventing you from finishing?
Yep, very concerned about it. Hence moving as quickly as I’m able. If I get blocked by snow in the Sierra I have a plan b for next year after the Yukon

I mentioned to him that the ADT avoids Dobbin Grade which typically is the wettest/muddiest area of the wilderness.
Yes you are correct that is a freshwater jellyfish
Really? Didn't know that was a thing. I said they might be frog eggs.
Does anybody bike the ADT?
Is this happening now, or last year, or what?
Looks like this episode was recorded about five days ago.
I am just getting into your journey and wondering if cycling the ADT is possible? No way I can walk it with my old feet.
People with carts or bikes do a version of the ADT but it seems like it must miss a lot of the more interesting bits. Does save you a lot of miles

I’m waiting with baited breath for the day AI can correct all my pronunciation butchery
Arent you afraid of Big foot?😂
you had a virus it is NASTY nausea lasts quite a while I couldn't eat for over a week
Have you been checked for morning sickness? LOL

That is the road to the wilderness area. There are no roads in the wilderness area. Old logging roads.
