  • The key to better travel videos: not making the same mistakes we did! While we are by no means experts, we did learn A LOT about what to do and not do to skip over those beginner mistakes.

    So, want to know how to make better travel videos?
    Here are the 8 tips for beginners:
    (basically all the mistakes we made for an entire year)
    1. Get great B-Roll
    - Seems like a no brainer but sometimes it's hard to remember. Then you get to editing and realize you only have a bunch of shaky footage of your face.
    2. Talk to the Camera
    - Also this is hard too! Get used to talking to the camera. Are you anything like Fin and start talking in your "customer service voice" when the camera turns on?
    3. Ask yourself questions
    This becomes easier!
    4. Hold the camera steady.
    Hardest thing in the world. Should be the easiest thing in the world.
    5. Don't take it so seriously
    If you're not David Attenborough or Sigourney Weaver leave the BBC facts to the experts at National Geographic. People are here to forget for a minute they're on the bus not studying to become an expert on the 9th century building you're standing in front of.
    6. Add Angles
    The second you squat down or hold the camera high in the air your shot is immediately more interesting. Quickly your shots will start to look more cinematic.
    7. Don't get too attached to your footage
    There may be a favorite moment of your trip, but if you didn't film it well or if it doesn't apply to the story you're telling LEAVE IT OUT! It is very easy to get attached to your own travel footage but always ask yourself: is this something I care about or is this something that the viewer would care about.
    8. Show don't tell
    "Today we're in New Zealand" "Today we're going on a hike" "I think soon we'll get some food". No one in the history of filmmaking has spent so much time explaining what is about to happen. Get rid of all that junk (and stop saying it to the camera) and just go DO THE THING! Use speaking to the camera for things like sharing your emotions, thoughts and feelings ... not describing the weather or building we can currently see.
    ----------------
    ABOUT US:
    We’re traveling full time, living on our own terms and showing you the up-close-and-personal details of us figuring it out along the way. Sometimes it’s about navigating big, life-altering decisions. Sometimes it’s about navigating the seemingly lawless free-for-all that is driving in Hanoi. It’s moments of triumph and moments of panic. The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny.
    We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.” Just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem. We believe the world’s a more interesting place when people reject convention in favor of what they actually care about. This is us putting that idea to the test - one budget spreadsheet, RV renovation and mountain-peak drone video at a time.

    GREAT tips video! The 'cut it and cut some more' is the best one- I find I have to step away and leave it a few days then cut even more!!! My favourite thing to do is shoot a whole section to camera and then realise the microphone is not turned on.....😩😩🤣🤣

    • @timandfin
      @timandfin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has helped a ton to have someone to bounce edits off of. As far as the camera thing and microphone not turned on.... I already shot this video in its entirety two weeks ago The sound was terrible (echo) so I reshot again this week. I feel your pain.
      Couldn't see publishing a video about how to make better video when the audio was a steaming pile of garbage...
      I still don't know how people make incredible looking videos with good lighting, and great sound with iphones....we're STILL always screwing around with lights, mics,etc.

    This video contains the information... it is *precisely* what I was after. Your point: "isn't it awesome out here? wish we could share it with others" is exactly why I want to make videos. However, they still suck: your point on not falling in love with footage is spot on.... gets boring real quick. I've subscribed... thanks so much for making this! Looking forward to seeing your work!

    • @timandfin
      @timandfin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Geez! Thanks Robin! Glad you liked the video! I think a huge takeaway I should have maybe mentioned is that all you can do is learn with every new video you put together and try to do even better the next time. We like our footage later in the trip SO much more than the early stuff- but we had to start somewhere, right? We're still looking up youtube videos all the time on camera settings, editing tips, etc....just to get a little better for the next one!

      @timandfin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! We poured a TON of effort into filming in Vietnam. Sometimes, the best tip is just keep the camera rolling as much as possible. It was hard in Vietnam dealing with filming in the rain, keeping a camera handy when riding a motorcycle, etc. For all the footage we published we had 20x as much that was just BAD and no one should ever see. EVER.

    Thanks Tim, it helps the viewer appreciate all the work involved indeed! I'm a 'still' photographer, much easier I'm sure, albeit, to get the best, there can be a lot of editing there as well. Unlike some....I like hearing about the 'everyday life' kind of stuff as well Tim....right from getting up (as you showed us previously from your tent when 'up the Dalton'....to brushing your teeth and deciding what to wear! Throwing a steak on the grill, and enjoying a beer while waiting, with some good banter whilst doing so! Hope you decide to leave some of the cuttings for those of us, that enjoy the small things in life that we all deal with. Stay safe, enjoy every day!

    • @timandfin
      @timandfin  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We're still finding the balance. I can't tell you how much time it takes Fin to edit. Then we usually review together, edit more still. We try to keep videos short and moving rather than overstaying their welcome.

    actually i like when people tell interesting facts,one of my best trips ever was to europe and the tour guide was excellent . he would tell you little stories then tell you what saying you had heard all your life over in america came from he did this about 7 times, my favorite was in england when he showed us st pauls cathderal it took over 600 years to build mostly because they didn;t have the heavy machinery then but also because they ran out of money. then when they built westminister abby they had a surplus so they used part of that to complete st pauls cathedral and as most people don't realize westminister abby is really st peters cathederal and that's where the saying rob peter to pay paul came from. the tour guide we had really made the trip.

      TIM and FIN damn! Maybe I can contact the company and ask! It is the newest GoPro so I’m sure they are still coming out with gadgets for it!

    Do you put your drone in a carry on bag or check the bag?

    • @timandfin
      @timandfin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Vince! I always carried that big old Phantom in my Carry on bag. I carried all my valuables in my carryon (drone, laptop) which is why I ended up without clothes for almost a week when my bag got lost on the way to NZ. Well worth it!

      +Expat in Mazarron thanks for the sub! Looks like you've crashed a few drones over on your channel- never a good feeling seeing $1k fall from the sky. Your aerial work is great ! I'm still working hard to get just a few seconds of usable footage from each flight....

      Still got 3 drones left!!! not a great feeling when they drop from the sky! :)

      The name is "Hot Shot 2" from Epidemic Sound. It's actually where we get all of our video music from now since its impossible to find good soundtrack thats royalty free. goo.gl/ENAdF1

    • @timandfin

      We started using a Lumix G7 and are really happy with it. That's what this was shot with (excluding Hero4 and Drone footage).

    When people travel, they want to feel different, so it's always good to make videos explote with emotions(not meaning to verbally saying it"I feel...")... people usually react like 30% of the impressed emotion..

      Actually thought about what you wrote quite a bit today since we saw this comment earlier. Couldn't agree more- While it may be obvious what someone is feeling, its usually really interesting exactly WHY they're feeling that way....
      I think back to our day spent on the boat in Coron for example- I mention I'm super happy several times- but in that exact moment, that joy was wrapped up in the feeling that I knew this was literally the best day of my life. I should have talked more about how overwhelming it was to be surrounded by the beauty of Coron, the excitement knowing that the trip was not a mistake, and being surrounded by my wife and great group of friends- Would have maybe been a bit more compelling.
      Hope that made sense and thanks for commenting. Something I'm going to keep in mind moving forward!

    Good advice - having watched YT channels, mostly travel - for three years now and ditching TV in the process, I can say you covered most, but forgot to mention one thing, probably because it is a touchy possibly shitstorming subject - looks and personality....the problem of course is, that if you have neither your channel could go nowhere fast.....being really attractive like you guys is like, you're already halfway there, - it is not everything, because crappy content or/and bad techy will ruin everything fast - if you get everything right, including SEO - boom, set to go - about camera personality, I reckon one can work on it - but who has the guts to tell an aspiring host they are wishy washy - you guys have it all, but there are a lot of channels where I am itching to spill the beans, but don't, for various reasons - and oh, channels and host need to DIFFERENTIATE themselves from the pack......:-)

      You mentioned the thing we had NO idea about until we got into this more. This started as a fun side project along with the website but if you want to get any exposure at there is a ton of learning and technical stuff you'll spend time on. On the video side, on the SEO side, coding for website, etc. At the end of the day though, if you're not passionate about doing it then that will come across in your content so that's always what we focus on first. The other thing we remember is that we're just two idiots on camera trying to have a good time. We stopped trying to make something that everyone would love and started focusing on making something that we like.

      That is pretty solid advice. Without enjoyment, it just becomes like 9-5, something I have noticed time and again. Your having fun comes across real well, which is often the case with couples-hosts - makes good viewing.....:-)

      +WaffleBee hey- if it something you like to do it's not the worse place to start. We filmed a ton of what we did with a iPhone 5 that would overheat and shut off randomly all the time! As we got into it more and more, we decided to buy a drone and a GoPro and go from there.

    Loved this video guys! Lots of good tips for true novices. We'll be using them on our trip to Alaska next year. Now I'm working on streaming video for our League of Women Voters events and don't know what I'm doing. We will be using our own iphones and have a tripod. I'm looking at microphones. Have any suggestions? We don't have a lot of funds for this. What do you think of this BOYA? If I buy it can i tag you in Amazon Smile?

      Hey Lillian- As long as you have a way to attach the mic to the tripod you should be all set. We've even used zipties before. The BOYA that you pasted at the bottom seems find. The only thing I would tell you to be wary of is that the mic input for iphones is different than the standard mic input but it looks like this microphone has the right jack. Just make sure you test the levels before its time to record! (No need to tag us for Amazon but thank you for the offer!)
