      Great video, its a great idea to story board what you are going to film. Equipment can come last because you can do some amazing stuff with a phone if that is all you have.

      Great video & Yes I have a tip. I went to Europe in December and actually did all these things you said but another tip is to wake up super early before the people you are with so you can go explore a little and get some footage from some places that your group isn't planning on going. I did this in Stockholm and even though the people I was with didn't mind waiting here and there for me it felt good to be able to have my own time to so I could really take my time with things.

      I do my research and use Google Earth, Street Views and Satellite (in 3D to scout locations) to set up potential locations before I get there. Doesn't mean you can't change it up, just gives you a good base to start with so your limited time in a new place is maximized. Then when your in the field, I find that 50% of the time any planned shots don't work when on site, but the other 50% is money.

      Location hunting! If you're planning to make a travel video during your travel, better start at home doing some location research. Might be that super special spot you made a 3 hour hiking detour from your itinerary is not worth the shot, and you're missing a lot of other things around.

    As an airline crew member, i undertstand the drama of trying to do your photography/ videography while being a part of the travel group, and thats why on my personal travels i travel alone...so much benefits of solo travels - you dont inconvinience anyone with your time/interests, you go where you want, on your own time, make new friends,..did i say YOUR OWN PLAN AND TIMING? ahhhaahah great video as always.

    1000% agree with everything you mentioned. If you’re traveling with people it is so critical to make sure they are cool with the filming process. In some ways they can make or break your video.
    An extra tip is to get 1 or 2 solid clips if you ever get on a plane, train, etc to a new destination. Showing people how you got to a new place will make for a much smoother video vs just teleporting places.
    Lastly getting shots of how people (even yourself) are feeling in the moment on trips will make your video soooo much more dynamic. If you’re doing a hike ask your companions what they’re thinking or feeling. I find those on-the-spot sound bites will hold the viewers attention. They also make the memories of people and places so much stronger.
    Like you said biggest thing is to not take yourself too serious. The audience can tell when you’re having “fake fun” for the camera.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah me too! It’s tough, in the moment, to remember to get all the little things you might need. One extra tip would be to shoot with the edit in mind. While you’re shooting, consider how the edit might go, that might help with coverage.

    • @kelaidiscope
      @kelaidiscope 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have probably 5 or 6 different trips where I got some amazing clips. But it's not a complete video. It doesn't tell any story. So the footage lives on my hard drive.

    So much recognising your tips. Last holiday there was someone in my travel group who held up the group shooting video. She actually didn't tell the group she was shooting video with a DSLR camera. I was wearing a GoPro and a mirrorless camera and I was just talking about filming. Which actually gave me footage of my travel companions as well.
    Fun fact: I was also making a travel video, but since I prepared my shots, the group didn't have to wait for me.
    I agree with all your tips!

    Great video, because many of us travel with others who are not going with us to shoot videos! Especially for couples, getting your sig. other on board is important so as not to wreck the mood :). HOWEVER, I think that if you want the very best travel videos NOT involving just yourself/your companion, then GO ALONE. I focus, when I travel, on the people and culture around me. I can't do that if I have to accommodate the needs of my partner or group from the USA. Thanks, again for this thought provoking video.

    Agree wholeheartedly on the unmotivated use of slow motion (and ditto for time-lapse). I've been getting some good results filming at 30 fps and slowing to 24, though - it has a slight defamiliarising/stylising effect without feeling like slo-mo.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    anyone else where a camera strap around your neck AND still use the capture clip?
    I do because I just don't want the camera to dangle at the same time using the camera strap as an extra stabilizer.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s smart!! I’ll do you one better! There’s a link in the description for all the PolarPro stuff. Part of the line that includes the traverse is the BELAY, which is a camera strap with the same clip mechanism on it. So I wear the strap around my neck, then I go back and forth between the traverse backpack clip and the strap super easy. Or sometimes I do two cameras, one on the TRAVERSE, and one on the BELAY. If you can’t tell... I really like this system lol

    Re. the clip on shoulder holster, doesn't the camera bounce around and isn't it easy to bang it into something? I use a single wrist strap with my Sony A6600 and prefer to carry this in my hand, with a very light weight single shoulder half camera day pack. Thanks!

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      NOPE it holds really still! I actually find it does a great job of taking some of the weight out of the backpack and balancing it on front. I have a couple wrist straps too but I never use them because I LOVE being able to have both my hands available when I need them!

    If it's your first travel video, practice talking to a camera in public. If you have a big trip coming up that you're excited to make a travel video about, but you have never been out in public shooting video and talking to a camera before. Go practice at the park or in the mall. You don't wanna get stage freight when it's showtime.

    I gotta ask and i dont want it to come across as a harsh criticism..in some parts of this video theres a pretty noticable lack of use of hdr, and from someone whos (to my recollection) primarily a sony shooter not using the cameras hdr capabilities is in thise case because of the convenience? Or possibly because youre shooting by yourself and do want to waste the light by constantly checking exposure? Just something that caught my attention

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! So this whole video was shot in HLG3 picture profile but generally metered for proper exposure on my face. So sometimes there was just too much dynamic range all together and the sky would blow out. This isn’t the way I always do things but I was experimenting a bit. Then on top of that, the sun was coming and going a lot so there are a few times where I got set up, started my talking shot and then the lighting would change, I just kept talking through it, but when it gets all cut together, it can look a bit funny. Thirdly, when I’m walking, I was moving in and out of different areas of light and that one shot especially got really messed up. Trying to grade this video was a bit of a nightmare between the green reflection from being in a forest most of the time to the changing and strange conditions. So you’re definitely not wrong to notice that, it was something that I only had so much time (like you mentioned, I would lose the light) but there was also a HUGE dynamic range in some cases that was beyond what HLG3 could handle. It was an interesting experience for sure!

    • @GabrielRodriguez-cb8hb
      @GabrielRodriguez-cb8hb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dunnadidit yeah i figured it was a bit of an odd lighting situation, and you most likely shooting on your own, it wouldve wasted too much time fussing with exposure, interesting for sure

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I really should have shot SLOG2. There were a couple times where the shot I wanted, the sky was totally blown out and my face was still super dark 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’m getting too used to my little studio space and having control over the lighting.

      @@dunnadidit true im still trying to master my a6500 and getting to most out of it, but sometimes i gotta just stop messing with it and tell myself, no matter what i do its not an alexa, and move on. Ive also just kind of started to embrace the idea that sometimes S-log2 isnt the best profile for the job. Especially in low light

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah so true, and there’s no such thing as intimate DR either, sometimes you just gotta expose for what’s most important. But the most important thing is that what needs to get captured gets captured!

    In the military we learn the "7 P"'s; Proper Prior Planning Prevents Pi$$ Poor Performance ;-) Meaning, plan ahead. Good advice there. But people in my group have been my downfall a couple of times. And it was never their fault, it was mine. I led some family on an epic desert trip specifically for making a video and they were all on board with it (none were photo/video people but they were very interested in it.) But I was so concerned about NOT holding them up or ruining their experience that I completely failed to get the video that I wanted. There is a very fine line between getting what you need and being a jerk. And that line changes depending on the group. It was my trip, and my rules and they were all very supportive so it was my failure. But if you are constantly making everybody wait on you when it is NOT your trip, then you are just a selfish jerk.

      Similar concept, different design though. I don’t think peak is the only (or even necessarily the first) one to do some kind of clip like that either. I have the peak too but I’ve really been loving the implementation of the polar pro one and how they’ve also worked it onto a neck strap and mini tripod as well.
