I've said it before and I'll keep saying it: half the people who saw this film hated it because it feels like a two hour long Daft Punk music video. The other half loved it because it feels like a two hour long Daft Punk music video.
I loved it (and the original) because of the worldbuilding. The music is an amazing addition (my introduction to Daft Punk) but the Grid is just so intriguing. It's a virtual world, but not like the Matrix, which is designed to be a simulation. Daft Punk's soundtrack is the musical compliment to the visuals.
Tron Legacy in my opinion is such an underrated gem that had massive potential for a franchise and its a shame we lost it in favor of lackluster live action remakes and crappy Star Wars projects, ironically enough Tron Legacy box office would be seen as a success nowadays compared to the massive box office flops Disney puts out.
I felt that Tron Legacy came a few years too early for the cultural 80s nostalgia wave that really became clear with Stranger Things and peaked with Ready Player One and left with Thor Ragnarok and Wonder Woman 1984 Tron Ares is going to come too late as we've moved on to 90s nostalgia
The part where you're like "hopefully they don't cast a predator" hard cut to Jared Leo headline and then the "oh nooo" clip... stellar editing, I laughed way too hard lmfao
This whole series is essentially a big explanation of why Disney spent the majority of the later 2010s and early 2020s relying on Marvel, Star Wars, and live-action remakes.
Monopoly is really mind-boggling. Imagine having consecutive box office bombs and still having the money to buy Star Wars and Marvel. For some film and video game studios, having just one clunker can be a death sentence.
I was largely unfamiliar with Daft Punk when this movie was made. I was wholly expecting Wendy Carlos to do the music and was pleasantly surprised that Daft did a credible job sounding "kinda" like a Carlos score, enough to not distract. I do miss the analog sounding synth.
I love Tron Legacy. I have a ID Disk hanging in my basement. I think when Disney canceled Tron: Uprising they should have allowed the editors to rework the final two episodes to tie the two feature films together with a nice little bow.
I like it also. It has a potential and room for sequels. Love the atmosphere of the real world and the computer world. The story was a given, and I don't hate the actors. He's not very charismatic, but he can play the part. Overall, if people find it a so-so movie, we'll that's their opinion, but for me, I love this movie. I can compare it to Blade Runner 2049... and I hate Jared Leto also 🙂
@TheChancellor212 The worst part is. In the final 15 minutes of Uprising, the bad guys are repurposing Tron into Rinsler. All they had to do was change 15 minutes to let it happen and then have Rinsler de-rez the main character, Beck.
Personally, I suspect Beck was really a back-up of CLU the whole time. I've heard that in early drafts of the script Beck was originally named "Beta". I always puctured CLU pulling the same trick Flynn did in Tron: Legacy and reintegrating Beck into himself during the "final confrontation". That way, he'd be able to obtain Tron's disk and destroy the resistence in one move. And it would have made for an even worse gut-punch ending to season 2 or season 3 than simply repurposing Tron at the end of Season 1.
To me, tron is disney's most poorly managed franchise. It has so much potential to become one of the greats in sci-fi, but they really dont know what to do with it
They have so many franchises that its hard to pick the most poorly used one. But its not just Disney, no one can figure out how to make Tron great again. In a way, it suffers from the Matrix curse. HOW do you make the digital world cool and interesting, once you escape the gladiatorial video games, and no longer have a reason to be there at all ? Interestingly, both the Matrix Reloaded and Tron Legacy decided on the same answer, they needed to meet a guy in a bar, get into a fight with them, and then have an exciting chase scene :O I'm also not a fan of 'the girl that is the key to everything' as a trope, and they certainly couldn't find a way to make it compelling, just dropping her off in the Real World as a insta-love interest was not a great ending, and made no sense in universe.
Fun fact: the original version of Tron 3 was supposed to be called “Tron: Ascension”, you can actually find some concept art for this movie out there if you guys are interested. They also actually released a short named “Tron: The Next Day” that was supposed to work as a bridge between Legacy and Ascension.
I didn't knew that a sequel to this movie was going to happen, i didn' knew it was so close to the release!! The first part of the video gave me hope and hype beyond belief!!! ....and then you said that jared leto is in it, and now i'm sad and mad
This comment is perfect. Legacy was a beautiful movie that just didn’t quite have enough in terms of engaging plot and characters. Interesting stuff but too shallow an exploration. The soundtrack and vibe is great. Then you have to hit me with a director with a bad track record and a toxic star. Why?!?
The TRON franchise, for me, is… frustrating. That’s not because it’s bad. Frankly, the entire concept is *insanely* creative, and has a *lot* of potential for amazing stories and characters. And that’s the problem: Disney’s not DOING anything with it! Sure, there was Uprising, which was amazing and probably one of the best cartoons I’ve ever seen, but it was cancelled after one season! And it was left on a major cliffhanger! And even more frustratingly, it was revealed that there was an Uprising movie in development that would have featured Quorra in some capacity! It’s just frustrating that Disney keeps killing off shows and then doing nothing with the IPs even though the creators would probably love the chance to continue their stories.
@@Somethinglazyidk Never met him I'm 100% correct and you know it. The list of inventions up to and including the computer are 99% white people. That includes the power grid it runs on.
Yep. I always thought he should have been a supporting character, an antagonist turned ally, instead of the forgotten background character they left him as
I personally think that Tron being an afterthought character talks about how he literally fell off. He is now a puppet, just an asset. A tragic ending, all thats left of him by the end of the movie is a flashback with a BANGER daft punk track
It is a crying shame that Daft Punk split up before being able to work on the Music for the Sequel. Legitimately one of the most underrated and unique music Film scores of the 2010s era
Every time I watch another movie in this series, I think, "Well that's all of them. No way there's any more." And then another one comes out, and in like, "O h yeah. I remember that."
If Disney does not want to make a film sequel , let them at least complete the story of Rinzler (the corrupted Tron) in the Kingdom Hearts video games.
How funny is it that Disney has had not one, not two, but three threequels that have been in development hell for decades!?! Tron, The Princess Diaries and National Treasure! At least the Tron threequel has a release date! If that wasn’t enough, there’s the Darkwing Duck reboot, every Star Wars movie in the works, a Pirates movies in the works, the live action African princess movie, Sade, which I'm convinced they turned it into the live action Little Mermaid movie🤣 Edit: Warner Bros in general is the bane of MY existence. They’ve made the most baffling decisions I’ve ever seen a studio make. Even before Victor Zsasz or whatever his name is took over. The only hope I have for the whole company is DC Studios, which is technical because it’s independent from the company and the company can never ruin another DC project again.
I am so bummed that we haven't gotten the Darkwing Duck series, I remember the rumors that it was actually meant to be directly tied to Ducktales this time and was like "kick-arse!" when Ma Beagle and Mark Beaks were floated as potential villains. And then . . . nothing.
@@selenagomez2504 Yes! Like I said in my comment, "Legacy" lacked a visual style recapturing the original film's otherworldly look - a "Spiderverse" could have accomplished exactly that
I absolutely loved that movie, however, the thing is that is a sequel launched almost 30 years later of the first one, so me, who have just watched this film, found myself at the begging of the film, in mid of a story, so had to go with the flow. The movie is amazing overall, but needed to be a reboot instead of a sequel, and then you'll have a proper sequel success.
My man(!) Clu is not "de-aged"! He is a total CG construct. De aging is when they film Robert Downey Jr and air brush his wrinkles. Clu is like the planet of the apes movies, golem or Hulk and Thanos. It's a new construct not digital air brushing what is already there.
Can't agree. I think his point is that when movies try to sell us younger versions of an actor with the help of technology, it never works. So it doesn't matter what technology they are using and whether they are just doing a bit of smoothing or creating a whole new actor out of lines of codes, the movies simply cannot convince us that these are in fact those actual characters when they were younger. Therefore you can't compare Clu with Thanos because Thanos is not supposed to be a younger Josh Brolin. He's a fantasy creature. Our minds accepts Thanos because he's not supposed to be real, but our minds do not accept what happens in Tron, Irishman, Indiana Jones etc because in those movies we are asked to take those younger versions as actual real entities even though they are clearly not. I would argue even a human character made out of thin air is more believable than an old actor made to look young. Because at least in the former we don't have a reference. We don't have to connect that person to an actual actor.
Honestly, when it's Clu, it makes sense that he looks uncanny, because he's meant to be digital. When it's supposed to be real-life Jeff Bridges in the opening flashbacks, there's no excuse for him looking like his face is made of rubber.
@@amirmohamad2270I mean… I get your point, but to be fair Clu’s whole thing was that he was a imperfect digital copy of Kevin. So the uncanny valley aspect of him, intentionally or not, does help to complement this detail.
The biggest shame to me is that Tron Uprising never got renewed because of the film's failure, despite Uprising being better in every way, with potential to keep the IP relevant despite the film flop.
I can't believe it has been 14 years since Tron Legacy. The light cycles will forever be the best part. As for Jared Leto, you said it all. I don't mind him playing Batman's Joker, because I don't think the guy is really acting in that role.
I mind, because he was a terrible Joker. Y'know how every version has some title attached to them (Romero/the Clown, Nicholson/the Gangster, Ledger/the Terrorist, Phoenix/the Outcast, Hamill/the Icon, Richardson/the Freak, et cetera) by the fans? Leto is commonly referred to as "the Bad One".
Fun fact about the original; As this video points out, Tron was disqualified from the Oscars because they thought it was cheating to have computer generated effects... yet the movie ended up using more PRACTICAL effects than had ever been used in any other movie in the history of cinema!
Hey, don’t forget that Joseph Trapanese did a big part of legacy’s soundtrack; he helped a lot on the orchestral side of it while daft punk did a lot more of the electronic side. The visuals of this film are an absolute feast, and inspired me a lot in my career as an artist. I also love that clip of Olivia acting like a powered down droid until her lights are turned on lmao Also agreed on Leto. My favorite movies of his are Fight Club, Where he gets punched in the face, and Lord of War, where he gets shot in the face
Tron Legacy was great. It felt very sci-fi which is a niche market. That’s why I think it didn’t get more attention. I think they probably should’ve shot more footage and just made it into two movies. There were plenty of spots to leave it as a cliffhanger for the follow up act. If you watch it now, it still holds up nicely after 15 years. That says something right there.
Legacy deserved a proper sequel, one with Bridges, Wilde and Hedlund to tie the story together. As it I'm not interested in Ares as a movie on a basic conceptual level, because instead it being a movie about people inside a computer, it is seemingly about a program escaped into the real world. However, having seen the original (which happened for me qute a while after seeing Legacy), I see how actually simplistic in comparison the sequel is.
I kinda hate Jared Leto too, but you got to give him requiem for a Dream, and maybe Lord of War… So two out of forty three. My boys batting a solid 5% if you round up!
Now is definitely not the time for Disney to be rebooting anything. They need to fire almost everyone at the top and replace them with people who want to create good stories.
considering they've had a consistent commercially success hits this year with Kingdom of Planet of Apes, Inside Out 2, Deadpool and Wolverine, and now Moana 2, their leadership isnt going anywhere though Iger wants to retire for real this time by the end of 2025 once his contract expires
@ They did do better in 2024 after a horrible 2023. For 2025, Snow White and Capt America both look like they will lose money or even be cancelled altogether.
@@majorgear1021 Cap 4 is Fandango ticket buyers #1 most anticipated film of 2025! It will do fine. Why would they cancel either one? The Little Mermaid had similar backlash to its casting of its lead actress and it grossed $569 million. Disney's 2025 film slate is looking much better than even 2024, with Avatar Fire and Ash being an inevitable another $2 billion hit. Zootopia 2 likely another billion hit like the 1st one. Lilo & Stitch, Elio, Fantastic 4 First Steps, Thunderbolts*, Tron: Ares, etc
@@majorgear1021 There's was an opportunity to install new board members into Disney board back in April and with the proxy vote by Nelson Peltz and yet Disney shareholders voted against it by 70 to 30
Disney itself is a "failed next big thing." they bought a bunch of IP's expecting to capitalize on remakes, reboots and adaptations, and we all expected a lot outta them because, well, Disney...🤷♂️... but yeah 🤦♂️... nah 🙇♂️
Years ago, I was getting a cavity filled, and they were playing this movie in the TV above me. Weeelllllll, they may have gotten me a little too high with nitrous oxide, and… let’s just say, the pretty neon lights of this film gave me the best drug trip of my life.
real shame such a stellar soundtrack by two guys who were very particular who they worked with/projects they were on, is attached to a lukewarm (honestly forgettable) movie. At least we have the soundtrack tho, and that daft punk enjoyed working with orchestras so much that it inspired their final album which is cool as hell to know.
Well at the least the. 2 screenwriters would continue to have gain full employment at Disney since for the next 8years they were the showrunmers for “once upon a time“ , a favorite of mine❤
Tron 1 would also spawn the function perlin noise, a neat little function for generated noise used for worlds in games like Minecraft. Tron 1 was just, such a large stepping stone for so many major IPs.
Another one of Disney's 'Failed Next Big Thing' would be the Chronicles of Narnia films. First one was a major hit, the sequel not so much and then they just casually drop the third movie, leading to 20th Century Fox coming in to finish the trilogy.
I was only 4 years old when this movie came out. Between ages 6 and 10 this was easily one of my favorite movies to watch at my grandparents' house. I didn't watch it for years, but when I re-watched this movie about 2 years ago as a 17 year old Holy crap this movie aged so freaking well. The cinematography beyond the CGI was so damn good that even mid CGI (which, let me be clear, was way better than mid in this movie) would let this movie age well visually. I thought the story may have been basic, but it was very simple and clean, and just made it quite entertaining, probably a 8/10 for me personally, which is probably brought up by a lot of nostalgia bias. I'd personally 100% recommend to anyone who's curious about it. But that's just me, all of your criticisms are actually super based and I agree with them, I just dislike these things less.
I’ve always loved Legacy, it just nails the audiovisual experience and the tone, which I think Kosinski is a master of. This year saw it in IMAX 3D which honestly might be the best 3D experience of my life. I am really sad that Disney canceled the original sequel. Ares will not be the same and I can’t imagine it being worth it.
I'm not sure why critics didn't like Tron Legacy...I loved it...watched it several times....awesome special effects...music...story..sound...not sure what people want
The excitement just dies, once our hero escapes the gladiatorial video games, and no longer has a reason to be in the digital realm at all. They then take a page from Matrix Reloaded and decided they needed to meet a guy in a bar, get into a fight with him and his minions, and then have an exciting chase scene. I'm also not a fan of 'The girl that is the key to everything' as a trope, and they certainly couldn't find a way to make it compelling, just dropping her off in the Real World as an insta-love interest was not a great ending, and made no sense in universe, I mean, she is a type of PROGRAM, so where does her real life body even come from ?
@@sprinkle61 This. They should have escaped with his father - that is the crux of the story (hence - intro). The girl should be Tron gf or something. But the hero and his dad relationship should be number one. want to sacrifice him ? fine. he did meet his dead and maybe can let go. but yeah, girl as key and teleport to real world w/o explanation lead to bad ending. kinda. maybe it was explained. but still...
I do personally love Tron Legacy but I admit it's largely due to the visuals. It's a stunning world with really cool action, but the characters need just a little more depth. The final sacrifice was a pretty good ending followed by the drive into the sunset. I think one of my problems with the movie is it has one of those setups that could've been a movie on its own. The heist into the company and the parachuting off the roof is such a cool intro to Sam's character, but then nothing about the company or his shenanigans really matters because then he's in the grid for the rest of movie. I always forget the movie starts that way because I immediately forget again once he's in the grid. Still a favorite movie tho. I listen to the soundtrack a lot still (and fuck jared leto) (if he gets his grimy hands on this franchise im starting a riot)
For future reference the generally used calculation for break even is 2.5x. And that's generally the lower end figure, most big budget movies are almost always going to be higher, sometimes considerably. For example if you look at Top Gun Maverick. There's an article on deadline breaking down the actual numbers. $177m production budget, $180m advertising budget and cinemas took 53% of the box office gross. So the true budget was $357m and they needed a box office gross of $674m just to break even on that. That's a 3.8x multiplier on the production budget. And that number doesn't include interest on the loans they take out to get this stuff made and talent partiticpations. The true number is probably in the 4-5x range, just to break even. So yeah. I doubt Tron Legacy made money, even after post-box-office revenue streams.
There’s also the Tron Betrayal graphic novel that acts a prequel to Legacy. From context in that my theory is rather than create a digital copy of himself to watch over the Grid and make the perfect system, Kevin Flynn siphoned off aspects of his personality into a copy of himself, like Kirk in the Star Trek episode The Enemy Within. Efficiency, any sense of responsibility went to CLU but not the wonder or self-awareness to develop beyond an idea. CLU isn’t an AI gone rogue, he’s doing what he was programmed to, it’s just that his programming never had a protocol for imagination or change since Flynn hadn’t developed as a person to realise this was important. That’s why the merge at the end is fatal, they’re the same person but two aspects who have evolved too far to be reconciled. Marvel also did variant covers for some of their comic issues with the characters with Grid based appearances.
This is the only 3D blu ray I ever bought. It holds up pretty damn well. The only problem I had with it was the suspension of disbelief around porting a human in and out of a computer system built with 80’s tech, that has been running faultlessly for 30 years.
Audience: we'd love to see this beloved property correctly handled and well executed. Iger Disney: Nah, we don't want your money, we make money off apathy now.
I consider it a success, and was disappointed Disney ‘suspended’ TRON: Ascension. TRON is one of Disney’s original properties. They should care about their original properties like their acquired ones. As for Jared Leto? I am not going to see TRON:Ares for him. I’m going to see if the next adventure on the grid is something I can enjoy.
I thought Olivia Wilde's sense of wonder was the strongest character aspect of this film. I saw this movie in theaters and would rate it as fun and visually great. To this day I have never seen the original Tron except a few brief clips so there was nostalgia test for it to live up to for me.
Simple rewrite: Make Sam 13 or 14 instead of twenty-something, and damn the timeline. Heck, make this a period piece! Let it take place in the early 90s. That way, you can build up Sam's anger towards Flynn for being absent all this time. You can play off of Sam and Quorra's ages, because she's mentally older but literally only 2 years old, whereas Sam is 13 or 14, but he actually has all that experience. This could also make Sam react with more awe and wonder to the Grid, as opposed to the current "edgy and confused" look that Garrett has throughout the movie. Plus, when the younger Sam is in peril, we're more worried because he's a kid, we don't want anything bad to happen to him. Have Sam be a wunderkind with computers. That's how he hacks Encom at the start and that's why he's so awed by the Grid. And by the end, he's grown enough to realize why his dad did what he did and he now has a new older sister. I think a Timmy Chalamét would have worked, and as much as I love Olivia Wilde, maybe someone younger would fit the rewrite. Someone that can play 18-19, like barely into adulthood.
I feel like these “failed next big things” could also be seen as “Disney desperately trying to capture the eyes of teen boys” - like they are seen as wholesome entertainment and princess fare and were trying SO HARD to get boys and young men on board they ended up needing to bring marvel and Star Wars into the fold
@@lastsong7159 very good point on those animated ones; I don’t think they are very teen aimed tho…. And Atlantis and Treasure Planet (also aimed at boys) were flops. Seems to me Disney was trying to find what would stick with that audience during this era and succeeded with the two you mention for younger boys and pirates of the Caribbean for tweens then all these were flops
i totally agree, theres a constant here i think of trying to fill all quadrants of general demographics and finding out young male audiences arent coming to their movies, at least not as much as girls, until pirates of the caribbean came along. and yes, treasure planet and atlantis not doing as well as they wanted is probably part of it -i think those, especially atlantis, should be counted as disneys failed next big thing too.
It's kind of weird how Disney shifted from giving the fans what they wanted in the second Tron film, to purposely sabotaging the third film with the casting for example. They obviously know what there doing here which is really evil.
I assure you Disney has NO idea what they are doing. Its not just Tron, pretty much every franchise they have is being driven into the ground with sequels and live action reboots. Also, the second film did not give me what I want, which would be a non-Mook (faceless henchman) version of Tron, a REASON for our hero to be in the digital world, and something more interesting than 'The girl that is the key to everything' as a plot.
@@sprinkle61 I say they been doing pretty good with their sequels this year lol. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Inside out 2, Deadpool and Wolverine, Alien: Romulus, etc
@@luismedrano6680 Also Moana 2 and Mufasa, both of which should do well. They are kind of hit and miss with their movies, 2023 was not nearly as good as this year, they got smart and released WAY less superheroes this year, and more variety in their sequels. I didn't care for about half of this stuff, Romulus was something of a soft reboot with lots of member berries, Moana 2 didn't have much of a plot, and Mufasa really made Scar more of a simp than I would prefer, but this material is not for me, and clearly the movie going public liked it. Lets see how Snow White Live Action and Captain America 4 do. Even though they are also sequels, they take a LOT more risks than anything released in 2024.
What I liked about the two tron films is that you can tell their from the same franchise but the sequel felt warranted to make and has this evolved aesthetic from the first film. I think a 3rd film will be unnecessary if it ends up looking similarly to the second one because I feel like we’ve seen everything this style has to offer
I love how each film's context fits their iterations of the Grid. In the 80s, the Grid was Encom's servers. Computer programming back then was rudimentary compared to current tech (though it was fascinating how Dillinger had a touchscreen desk). The MCP is the top program running things in Encom. A lot of elements were borrowed from Flynn's arcade games, and the Grid developed a culture surrounding them, indicative of how Dillinger stole credit for them. And programs view Users in a religious way, since they are literally our creations. In Legacy, the Grid is Flynn's unrestricted vision at work. With newfound understanding, and possessing a genius level intellect and Encom's resources, Flynn made a private server for his Grid. So both stories had in-universe justifications for their respective visual directions.
To me this movie is so underrated. The visuals are dope, the story is interesting and the characters are pretty solid. And that's even getting into the music that the iconic Daft Punk contributed.
The problem with Tron Legacy is the same issue that Paramount always had with Star Trek - they didn't get the audience. The original Tron wasn't a huge success, it is more known for the cgi than anything else so it was unlikely that a sequel done 25 years later was going to be a huge success. But there was an audience for it and with a controlled budget, you could have a successful film and they did. If they had proper expectations then things would have been fine and they would have done a sequel but Disney wanted a massive hit and when they didn't get it, they considered it a failure. Yeah the film was just okay but what's wrong with that? It was entertaining and looked good, that's better than a lot of films these days. It could have been rhe steady franchise that kept making Disney money like Trek was in the 80s but Disney wanted big so they did Marvel and Star Wars and were successful for a while but that has run out and they need a hit - I don't think the new Tron will be it.
The only thing I really remember about this movie's legacy (no pun intended) was the tie-in section on Disney Create (old digital art platform that got shutdown in May 2014) I remember the Tron section being one of my favorite themed sections to go to because of all the glow affect brushes lol
@4:33 "each battery lasts 12 minutes" Meanwhile, the lights of Daft Punk's goggles worked beyond an hour and costs no more than each costumes of the racers worth $60k.
I remember the helicopter company I worked for painted one of there helicopters for a promo for the sequel to Tron Legacy and they never even made the movie! To this day we still have that 1 single helicopter painted all black while the other 40 or so are painted silver and grey.
i love both Tron movies and most other Tron media, and Legacy cemented my love for Daft Punk and turned me into a lifelong fan. i won’t be seeing the third because of Jared Leto.
I never saw the first one but I saw this in the cinema when I was a kid and loved it. My child brain never even noticed the nightmare looking deaged Jeff bridges
400 million isn't good tbh 170 million budget another day 150 in marketing that's 320 million getting only 80 mill back isn't a win tbh for a movie like this
TRON Legacy is one of the biggest cinematic heartbreaks for me, I even bought a “Save Tron 3”. The proper 3rd movie was gonna have Cillian Murphy’s character fleshed out, and we were going to get another bangin Daft Punk ost. I love Legacy and it still hurts knowing we won’t have this cast and crew together again. Ughh.
One of the best rides I have ever been on in my life was the Tron ride in Disneyland Shanghai. It was amazing thematically, but it was also amazing as a ride itself. Take away the environment and it would still be amazing, but the environment makes it perfect. It has been at least 6 years since I rode it and I still remember it vividly. My family went on it at least 4 times, I think 3 times in a row, so probably more than 4 times total. There are only 2 rides that I've enjoyed that much since, which is Rise of the Reistance (Disneyland and Disneyworld) and the Guardians of the Galaxy rollercoaster (Disneyworld). They are amazing for different reasons, but truly, the Tron ride was, in my opinion, the best ride I have been on. I can totally see a large fan base come up from the ride, especially since it is now in the states. I would love to see a sequel (minus Jared Letto, didn't know about his background until watching this series of videos). Side note: if you ever get the chance to go to Disneyland Shanghai, absolutely do it. The park is newer, so there are fewer rides. But, the rides are all high quality, well made, and well designed. The Pirates of the Caribbean ride was absolutely insane, it was so realisitic, I could convince myself I was in the movie universe. The animatronics of the characters was so fluid and smooth, I thought for a second I was watching Davy Jones animated or as a person in a costume. I didn't even register that the ride was in Chinese until I went on it for the 3rd time.
I WONDERED why the Tron character's part was so small, reduced to almost an afterthought of a voiceover. All I could think of was that maybe they blew the whole de-aging budget on Bridges or something, but it makes sense if they wrote the whole script without him and then tried to insert him at the last minute. Huh. I wonder if it would have been better if they'd stuck to their guns and left him out, or if they'd caused expensive delays by adding major rewrites and reshoots? I wonder what the thought process was behind not including him from the beginning? Very interesting. I'm glad the Internet wasn't around in the 1980s, because I was blissfully unaware that some of my favorite movies were considered "flops" at the time.
Tron Legacy is still my favourite movie despite all its flaws. I watched it around 40 times before I lost count of it and growing up I discover more and more cool secrets behind its worldbuilding everytime I interact with something of its franchise (Expecially "computer nerd" details like the hidden keypoint of the story that Sam Flynn doesn't get arrested for stealing the source code since Encom OS 12 is a Linux Distro as shown by the actually coherent and correct shell commands used in the terminal by Dillinger and the terminal interface title being "Encom Linux", so he wasn't going against the license- when I realized it after so many years I felt like I cracked some secret code or whatever, its rare seeing an "hacker scene" being treated with the due respect). It had a lot of heart and I don't want even to start talking about the egregious work behind its soundtrack (Adagio for Tron had no reason to be this good). I'm sad Ares has been treated like some sort of throwaway project and has been subject to that many modifications. Also, the fact Jared Leto acts in it fills me with HORROR.
I feel bad, Garrett Hedlund. I remember seeing a interview where he admitted he was in contention for CAPTAIN AMERICA & had talk to the director Joe Johnson. But passed on it, I think it was a offer to screen test. I remember Top Five names were him, Evans, Wilson Bethel, Mike Vogel, Scott Porter. And his reasoning was loyalty to Joseph Kosinski & believing there TRON was gonna be a trilogy. Gosh DISNEY didn't help Hedlund, Hammer, Kitsch. Only one to make big 2010s is Pratt.
Though subtle, I (being an empath) picked up on your slight distain for Jared Leto, and I agree.
Are you a regular or dark empath?
Thank you for that clarification. It was really hard to discern how he feels about that actor 😉
Your comment is brilliant and I love it 🤣

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it: half the people who saw this film hated it because it feels like a two hour long Daft Punk music video. The other half loved it because it feels like a two hour long Daft Punk music video.
I loved it (and the original) because of the worldbuilding. The music is an amazing addition (my introduction to Daft Punk) but the Grid is just so intriguing. It's a virtual world, but not like the Matrix, which is designed to be a simulation. Daft Punk's soundtrack is the musical compliment to the visuals.
What about the third half?
@@Derpy1969 We do not talk about the third half -.-

Aaah, like how the first Highlander movie is a really great Queen video.
Tron Legacy in my opinion is such an underrated gem that had massive potential for a franchise and its a shame we lost it in favor of lackluster live action remakes and crappy Star Wars projects, ironically enough Tron Legacy box office would be seen as a success nowadays compared to the massive box office flops Disney puts out.
lol their lackluster live action remakes have been more commercially than Tron Legacy and despite its lackluster movie its still getting a sequel now
I felt that Tron Legacy came a few years too early for the cultural 80s nostalgia wave that really became clear with Stranger Things and peaked with Ready Player One and left with Thor Ragnarok and Wonder Woman 1984
Tron Ares is going to come too late as we've moved on to 90s nostalgia
I don't think the original Tron was anywhere near big enough of an 80s property for that to matter.
"Do you hate Jared Leto as much as I do"
Yes, good sir. The answer is YES!
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!!!!!!!!! F### Jared!!!
I loved him in Fight Club.
I got Nothing against Jared Leto But What Isn't with Hollywood trying to turn this Guy Into the Next Megastar Didn't his Last Film Bombed Back in 2022
The part where you're like "hopefully they don't cast a predator" hard cut to Jared Leo headline and then the "oh nooo" clip... stellar editing, I laughed way too hard lmfao
What a legendary soundtrack
I completely agree. It may be my favorite soundtrack period.
Same here.
Daft Punk doesn’t disappoint
Absolutely top tier and it holds up exceedingly well.
I've always wanted Daft Punk to make an entire album as a spiritual sequel to it.
I was largely unfamiliar with Daft Punk when this movie was made. I was wholly expecting Wendy Carlos to do the music and was pleasantly surprised that Daft did a credible job sounding "kinda" like a Carlos score, enough to not distract. I do miss the analog sounding synth.
This movie was like a fine wine, just gets better with time
I love Tron Legacy.
I can compare it to Blade Runner 2049... and I hate Jared Leto also 🙂
They really should have done that instead.
Pixar could have made a worthy sequel, but this one wasn’t.
Thankyou! I thought I was going crazy when I saw that it was called Tron: Ares
We know... If we're watching a video about Tron, we already know..

I think a Jared Leto Tron movie could work as long as he says "it's Tronin' Time!".
I’m in that club.
No one is that clown forced his way into the movie industry because he has a "popular" band.
Why?!?
Disney should bet on The Tron sequel instead of tomorrowland

Tron: Legacy really suffers from the titular character being thrown in as an afterthought.
To this day I still forget that Rinzler is Tron until he says “user”. Such a odd choice.
I mean, you don't even find out (unless you use some meta detective work) until the last ten minutes of the movie.
It is a crying shame that Daft Punk split up before being able to work on the Music for the Sequel.
Legitimately one of the most underrated and unique music Film scores of the 2010s era
I still listen to this soundtrack. I LOVED Michael Sheen as Zuse. This deserves a proper reboot.
Seeing Legacy in IMAX 3D is one is the highlights of my life
I remember watching a kingdom hearts 3D dream drop distance trailer and being shocked that Tron legacy's world appears in the game lol 😆
That tron animate series was actually really good. I was so bummed when it got canceled.
How funny is it that Disney has had not one, not two, but three threequels that have been in development hell for decades!?! Tron, The Princess Diaries and National Treasure! At least the Tron threequel has a release date! If that wasn’t enough, there’s the Darkwing Duck reboot, every Star Wars movie in the works, a Pirates movies in the works, the live action African princess movie, Sade, which I'm convinced they turned it into the live action Little Mermaid movie🤣
Edit: Warner Bros in general is the bane of MY existence.
And then . . . nothing.
With all the live-action remakes, I think TRON (snd Black Hole) would benefit from an animated remake.
I disagree
Speaking of animated, they should bring back Tron Uprising.
It would be cool with the style of sonys spiderverse movies
@@selenagomez2504 Yes! Like I said in my comment, "Legacy" lacked a visual style recapturing the original film's otherworldly look - a "Spiderverse" could have accomplished exactly that
Considering Disney over the past few years? No thank you, I would rather remember when they were good.
My bad, oversight on my part
Honestly, when it's Clu, it makes sense that he looks uncanny, because he's meant to be digital. When it's supposed to be real-life Jeff Bridges in the opening flashbacks, there's no excuse for him looking like his face is made of rubber.
@@amirmohamad2270I mean… I get your point, but to be fair Clu’s whole thing was that he was a imperfect digital copy of Kevin. So the uncanny valley aspect of him, intentionally or not, does help to complement this detail.
Semantics
Today, those neon suits would be made using CGI.
I remember going to see Tron Legacy with friends, and we all thought it was a dope time. We especially gushed over the soundtrack, it’s timeless
Fun fact about the original; As this video points out, Tron was disqualified from the Oscars because they thought it was cheating to have computer generated effects... yet the movie ended up using more PRACTICAL effects than had ever been used in any other movie in the history of cinema!
1 problem is that "franchise" seems to be the goal of the studios rather than making good films. Another is the audiences are pretty stupid.
I also love that clip of Olivia acting like a powered down droid until her lights are turned on lmao
Also agreed on Leto. My favorite movies of his are Fight Club, Where he gets punched in the face, and Lord of War, where he gets shot in the face
Movies are just too expensive to make these days. If they manage to keep production cost down, a lot more movies would do better than break even.
I think the antagonist looking uncanny sort of works in this, he IS a weird fake computer-man, after all.

I didn't watch it for years, but when I re-watched this movie about 2 years ago as a 17 year old
Holy crap this movie aged so freaking well.
You’re so real for talking about how much of a pd file Leto is no one ever talks about it
I’ve always loved Legacy, it just nails the audiovisual experience and the tone, which I think Kosinski is a master of.
General audience and critics both agreed the visuals were really good. Everyone also had issue with the incredibly bland story
I listen to the soundtrack a lot still
(and fuck jared leto) (if he gets his grimy hands on this franchise im starting a riot)
He’s used to 2.5 in his other videos. I think he didn’t want to admit that this movie did not break even.
I have to agree with Pan Pizza that Star Wars was the major bullet to kill a Tron relaunch.
It’s too late for Tron. Today’s people wouldn’t even know it had a first movie.
this is my fav series on youtube atm!!! I remember going to see this movie in theatres and actually loving it
They also released a short film called Tron: The next day that was supposed to set up Edward Dillinger as the sequel’s main villain
Yeah, the Spider-Man neon suit. That suit actually appears in Spider-Man Big Time and he makes a joke about it
This is the only 3D blu ray I ever bought.
Tron Legacy was released during the 3D crazed, I remembered that in theaters you put the 3D glasses only in the Grid parts of the film.
They literally made Hercules and Emperor's New Groove. They already had a a male teenaged audience.
This movie had so many cool concepts and world building just wished they did more with it
It's kind of weird how Disney shifted from giving the fans what they wanted in the second Tron film, to purposely sabotaging the third film with the casting for example.
Even though they are also sequels, they take a LOT more risks than anything released in 2024.
this is the only one of these failed Disney franchises that was actually cool and unique
Freaking hate that Disney cancelled this franchise. Legacy was such a cheesy yet enjoyable adventure.
Tron: Ares is coming
The only thing I really remember about this movie's legacy (no pun intended) was the tie-in section on Disney Create (old digital art platform that got shutdown in May 2014)
I remember the Tron section being one of my favorite themed sections to go to because of all the glow affect brushes lol
@4:33 "each battery lasts 12 minutes"
Meanwhile, the lights of Daft Punk's goggles worked beyond an hour and costs no more than each costumes of the racers worth $60k.
Bought the soundtrack from Target back when the movie released. Olivia Wilde was my biggest crush. all in all I liked it.
Ooh, I just fear for the sequel, considering Disney's current ideas of politics to inject into their projects.
I agree. Anything Disney touches now is destroyed.

400 million isn't good tbh 170 million budget another day 150 in marketing that's 320 million getting only 80 mill back isn't a win tbh for a movie like this
$150 million in marketing?
Every movie should have it’s own rollercoaster.
Except Saw.

Ughh.
The OST itself by Daft Punk is a success.
It was a different Time People back than didn't understand what a Masterpiece is the original Tron Was Beautiful
Talk about G-Force

How does this work? Where do you find this information? It’s got to be so much work. Great work.
I love Tron Legacy and I agree with everything you said, especially about Jared Leto.
